“Let’s share this dream that all children should grow up in a home full of books.” – Dolly Parton The Wilson Books from Birth Program provides free books to Wilson County children from birth through age 5. Wilson Books from Birth has one fundraiser annually, making the Imagination Dinner a very important and exciting event.

Will you join us Thursday, April 6th from 6:30 – 8:00pm? Groups or businesses can purchase tables of 8 for $300.00, and each group will also select a “wacky waiter” for the evening. Each group will decorate their table and attendees according to the theme that they have selected. The waiter will collect “tips” for anything requested by the group and the tips will be added to the fundraising total for the evening. Live and silent auctions will be available throughout the evening, and door prizes will be given out as well. The Imagination Library program has grown in Wilson County. Based on the 2020 census there are 8,859 under age five children in the County. The current monthly registration averages over 6,000 children and over 18,000 children have graduated out of the program. Wilson Books from Birth is a division of the Wilson County Business & Education Coalition, a 501(c)3 organization of the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce Research shows that reading to young children, from birth, not only provides healthy together time for parents, families, and children, it also offers many lifelong benefits such as increased vocabulary, curiosity, and memory. Let us help you provide positive associations with reading while building your child’s listening skills, a foundation for academic success. Home is where the heart is Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That, of course, includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. The word "Home" translates to the 5 senses for me. With memories from my childhood it's the smell of my dad's grilling in the backyard and my mom making our favorite sides in the kitchen. The feeling of thankfulness when we are all around the table together. The sound and sight of my girls' excitement as my husband walks through the door from work. The taste of sharing a drink together with my husband celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, life. Home is an irreplaceable word and one that I do not take for granted. We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood, and most all of - your home. At Home with The Birges in Mount Juliet Country Artist George Birge Shares About Family, Music, and Career Milestones

For Country artist George Birge and his wife Kara, when it came to choosing a spot to raise their young boys, ages 3 and 6, Mount Juliet was the picture-perfect choice. While it may have been George’s songwriting buddies that convinced the Birges to plant their roots in Mount Juliet, Kara— who is a real estate agent in the area—knew it was an ideal place for their young family. “We’ve kind of lived all over. We were in Nashville and then Franklin. We landed in Mount Juliet, I hate to admit it, mostly because of him,” Kara says of her husband. “We had a lot of friends in this area, a lot of songwriters that we knew…we were looking

to build a house and kind of just fell in love with this community…It’s just been the best decision for us.” In the three years since moving to Mt. Juliet, the Birges have celebrated a lot of milestones. They had lots to be thankful for this past Thanksgiving as George made his Grand Ole Opry debut. “In a sense, it’s the ‘you made it moment’ in Country music. When you think about it, it’s a lifetime of work and dreaming and falling on your face and getting back up and keeping trying of work to get into that Circle,” he said of the milestone he got to share with his extended family who came to celebrate from Texas. “…It was one of the

most special days of my life just to have the boys backstage and [for them to] finally be old enough to kind of have an awareness of what dad does…,” shares George. “Our Christmas card this year was our family standing in the Circle at the Opry, so that was kind of a pinch-me moment for our whole family.” The Country artist doesn’t take one moment of his career as an artist for granted, as he’s grateful for the path that led him here. In 2020, he almost gave up on going the artist route, as he thought he’d make his living as a songwriter penning songs for other artists to record, but one of his Country music heroes, Clay Walker, encouraged him to give it one more try. “Clay Walker was one of the first big artists to take me under his wing,” he explains. While writing for Walker’s album—which includes their co-written song “Catching Up With An Ol’ Memory” — in their home state of Texas, Walker encouraged him to put his music on TikTok. “…I found instant success there,” remembers George. “People connected with the songwriting and my music and blew it up in a pretty massive way, and it gave me the opportunity to sign a record deal and go and start recording my first album….” After one of his songs, “Beer Beer, Truck Truck,”—received 3 million views in 24 hours, his popularity on social media started to spread, gaining him attention from the likes of Gary Allan and radio personality Bobby Bones. After seeing a cover song on Instagram, Bones invited him to his radio show. “He’s just been such a supporter, playing my song on the radio,” says Birge of Bones. “Since then, everything has elevated in such a massive way. My song ‘Mind On You’, he was the first to play CONTINUED >

on national radio, ended up being the most added [Country] song in America at radio, and he was a big part of that story….” The song was written when he thought he would pursue a path of writing for other artists. He didn’t have a record deal and pitched the song to one of his musical idols Jason Aldean, who, within 24 hours, asked him not to play it for anyone else because he wanted to record it. As his music began to spread on social media, George found himself signing a record deal and thinking that the song he gave away might be the one that could catapult his career if he recorded it himself. So while he knew Aldean cutting the song would be a monumental career moment, he made the risky move to ask for it back to record himself .“It’s just absolutely changed my life in the best way. I’m very grateful they gave me my song back...” he says of “Mind On You.” The rising artist has quite the year of firsts ahead of him and is excitingly anticipating everything 2023 holds. With his name

appearing on many of the most sought-after festival lineups, including Tortuga, Faster Horses, Watershed, TidalWave, and more, George Birge is looking forward to playing for new audiences on the road. However, before hitting the summer festival circuit, he’s heading across the pond to play C2C Country To Country festival in the UK. “…It’s something that’s been bucket list for me for a long time,” he says of playing the well-known international festival. “She’s a huge Downton Abbey and The Crown fan and everything, so she’s mapping out everything for me,” he says of his wife with a laugh. In addition to touring and playing festivals, Birge—who recently put out his single “Cowboys Talkin’” —plans to release a new song every two months throughout the end of the year, with a debut album slated for the end of the year. George Birge and his family are ready for the whirlwind of a year that’s ahead of them, but on the days they can rest, they are always thankful to have their home base of Mount Juliet to recharge, enjoy community, and make memories.

Dr. Lagueux explains that rather than trying to adhere to a specific theme or style for her home décor, she prefers instead to choose things that inspire her during her travels, “You don’t know what you’re going to find...you want to just discover.” Dr. Lagueux expresses the importance of immersing yourself in the places you are exploring. Whether it’s mingling with people, visiting local markets or tasting the local fare, there is great value in learning about new places and their cultures and traditions. Dr. Lagueux reminds us that traveling has a way of unearthing something within ourselves, “Be adventurous, and travel, and enjoy yourself. Tony Kosinski and his family have enjoyed success following a path that has allowed them to expand their business to include home-building, backyard living, and retail. Today they offer the Mount Juliet community a host of services to make their homes a haven for years to come. Tony has been in home construction for over 30 years and has expanded to encompass a thriving pool and backyard business. “Six years ago, we started building amenity centers in newly constructed neighborhoods,” Tony remembers. “From that, people started to ask us to do their backyards. That's how 615 Outdoor Living started.” About three years ago, they made it official – separating their businesses to found 615 Outdoor Living. This entity now focuses on custom backyards, including pools, pool houses, outdoor kitchens, garages, and both hardscaping and landscaping. “The backyard business has just really taken off,” says Tony. “So, we have spent most of our time there.”

He has been married to his wife Gwyn for 11 years and calls her “the rock star of the family.” She brings 30+ years of engineering and supply chain experience to the family business, having retired from her corporate career. The family is still expanding its offerings. This past October, Gwyn, and Tony opened a retail store off 109 in Lebanon carrying everything to equip and accessorize a backyard, including Big Green Eggs, Green Mountain grills, gas grills, outdoor TVs, outdoor furniture, and more. “I could have never gotten this store off the ground without her,” he says. “It's truly awesome to have a partner like her to build this with.” What can people expect when they come to his team for help? “Most know they want their backyard done – but very few know exactly what they want.” Tony and his team sit with clients to help plan their backyard visually so they can see how it will look.

The team usually takes three visits to develop a working drawing. “That doesn't mean it won’t change,” he says. “It usually does – and we work through that throughout the project. My goal is to make sure that, when the project is done, they get exactly what they want.” His advice for people planning their dream backyard is simple. “Get what you want, even if you go over your initial budget. You won't regret it.” He says clients' biggest regret is when they hold back on what they want, and then it’s too late to add it later. Tony stresses that potential clients should book a consultation to get things started. “Our advice is free – and it will help you, even if you don't use us.” He must have a lot of happy clients taking his advice because, according to Tony, some 90 percent of his customers are referrals. “The thing I like most after a project is finished - the

“I love working with people to make their projects come to life and become something they will love and enjoy as l o n g a s t h e y a r e t h e r e .” response from clients,” he says. “That's what makes me want to do the next one.” Tony even enjoys the small moments. “One of my favorite customers is a guy who just graduated from college,” he says. “He bought a Green Mountain grill, and once a month on payday, he comes in and gets something else for grilling. I love all of our customers, and I can't wait to work with all of them.” Tony, who also holds a real estate license, still builds and sells houses while creating beautiful backyards and

1 | Plan for your incapacity

When it comes to estate planning, sometimes the most difficult part is just getting started. But Matthew Mullins can help you get it together. A graduate of Belmont University’s College of Law, Mullins works with clients to provide for the orderly transfer of their assets; and to ensure that their personal preferences are met in the event of incapacitation. Recently he spoke to Mount Juliet City Lifestyle about some common issues regarding wills and estate planning.

Make sure your documents for a healthcare power of attorney and durable power of attorney are executed correctly and that your family knows where the documents are located.

Why do some people resist implementing an estate plan?

Determine if you want a will or a living trust. If your goal is to avoid probate, you’ll probably need a trust. These are important decisions for blended families or families with young children.

Some people think, ‘I’m not wealthy; I don’t have an estate,’ but that’s not true. Estate planning is really for times of incapacity. If you’re incapacitated for a year, who is going to manage your affairs? The size of the estate does not matter. We all have people, relationships, and possessions in our lives, regardless of monetary value.

A lot of people are moving here from other states. Are their estate plans valid in Tennessee?

3 | Consistent Beneficiaries

Generally speaking, states recognize valid wills that were executed with the laws of the states where they were created. However, I think it’s a good idea to review your estate planning documents with a local estate planning attorney to avoid any misunderstandings. One of the nuances is how different states recognize ownership of a couple’s assets. Some states recognize it as community property, where it’s owned 50-50. Here, it’s Tenancy by Entirety, meaning that the assets are owned by the married couple. It’s important to know the difference. Another option is to establish a trust that mimics the laws of your original state.

Make sure assets like 401k accounts, and life insurance policies are consistent with your estate plan. It’s not common, but the worst-case scenario would be to remarry, not update the beneficiaries, and your 401k goes to your ex-spouse..

What happens if someone doesn’t have a will?

Every few years, review your documents and make sure everything is set up the way it’s supposed to be.

“That’s a common misconception. Everyone has a will, whether you write it or the state writes it. In the absence of a will, there are laws in Tennessee that specify what will become of your assets at the time of your death. These are important considerations because, ultimately, it’s peace of mind for you and your family.”

Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar

Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be. A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim. If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.

VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain. • A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary. • If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well. • Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. In a traditional bar, citrus and vanilla vodkas are the trusted standbys. suggested glassware:

A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum. • A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito. • As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:

Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries. • If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini. • From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:

TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila. • The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar. • For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:

This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more. • For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth. • Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste. • A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. While they make excellent cocktails, they’re not as common or as versatile as the other styles. suggested glassware:

Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. Amaretto: The almond-flavored liqueur is used in both fancy and casual cocktails. • Coffee Liqueur: White Russians and countless other cocktails rely on a bottle like Kahlúa. • Dry and Sweet Vermouth: Technically, these are fortified wines, but they’re essential for martinis. • Irish Cream Liqueur: Baileys is a popular brand, though there are others worth checking out. You can also stock another cream liqueur, such as RumChata instead. • Orange Liqueur: Used in countless cocktails, this one’s invaluable. A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material. 1 cup sourdough 1 ½ cups warm water ½ cup sugar ½ cup avocado oil (or oil of your choice) 1 tbsp salt 6 cups bread flour Dough to Rolls Ingredients: 1 stick of melted butter 2 ½ cups of white sugar 3 tbsp cinnamon Icing Ingredients: 3 cups powdered sugar 1 tbsp milk 1tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp butter

1. Mix up the Sourdough with the “Dough Ingredients” Above using active sourdough 2. Let it sit at room temperature to rise for 8-10 hours 3. Punch down the dough and roll/ stretch it out into a big flat triangle-the dough should be ½” thick 4. Pour the melted butter on your flat dough 5. Add the sugar and cinnamon on top of the butter 6. Roll up and slice into 1” thick rolls 7. Place in greased pans and allow space between rolls for another rise. 8. Let rise on the counter for another 8-10 hours. 9. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees after the second rise is complete 10. Bake for 25 mins 11. Mix icing well to a runny consistency. Too thick add milk to thin it, too thin, add powdered sugar to thicken 12. Cool completely before icing
