I once heard the quote, “Style is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”
I remember vividly as a teenager, feeling the need to constantly re-invent my style. Of course, that was an obvious side effect of the pressure we all faced as adolescents (i.e., the need to ‘fit in.’) But as I grew up, I started to notice the wide breadth and variety of style and how you can create your own vision. Even still, it’s hard not to compare yourself and measure the merit of your own work against the success of others.
But what if, when it comes to style, we simply paid attention to our own growth and our own path. The idea of competing with oneself and to con stantly chip away to become, not better than others, but the best version of ourselves, might actually have a long-term "ripple effect” for the greater good.
The stories we tell on a regular basis, but especially this month, reflect those style warriors. Those who went against the grain at times, to simply be better than oneself, as they formulated their own style and forged their own path. Being from a small town in Georgia and two of five sis ters, Hannah and Hailey had style instilled in their bones from a young age. Their mother passed down a love for classic styles while teaching her girls always to be confi dent in whatever they liked.
Magpies Mount Juliet is one of the newer additions in the North Mount Juliet area nestled in the beautiful white shopping center, Hawks Landing. Owned by sisters Hannah Harrison and Hailey Stone, this high-end chil dren’s boutique has been a dream in Hannah‘s heart for quite some time. A mom of three boys, Hannah realized the limited options for high-end children's clothes in town and quickly grew tired of driving a significant dis tance to find brands and quality that she loved.

Katy Gold Gold is originally from Lewisburg, Tennessee, and graduated from MTSU’s Apparel Design program in 2014. She has worked at e.Allen in Murfreesboro as a stylist and is now the store’s manager.
“The education I received at MTSU prepared me for the evo lution of my career. A creative eye will get you far. But it was the guidance of my instructors and my dedication to the coursework that paid off in ways I continue to see today,” Gold said. “I had the best foundation as far as family, boyfriend (now hus band), and friends to help support and establish myself to be able to follow my dreams.”

“A good, clean pair of medium to dark wash jeans will allow you to transition from casual to dressy with a nice shoe,” explained Gold. T-shirts and tank tops are great layering pieces as the summer turns into fall. Paired with a cardi gan, light sweater, or blazer, they’re the perfect weight as the summer temperatures linger into fall.
“You need quality T-shirts and tanks. I love black and white. If you like gray, pop that in there. A good stripe or boat neck tee is also great to have. These are essential classics you can pop on with a variety of bottoms regardless of your everyday style,” Gold explained. Blazers no longer just fit into the business world. They’re a fashion staple that can easily be dressed up or down and layered with your favorite t-shirt, blouse, or dress.
“A neutral blazer is a good thing to have to layer over pieces that you may be wearing mid to late summer, and they’re going to get you well into fall, especially here where we put the jacket on in the morning, and it’s off by midday because it’s 85 degrees” There’s nothing better than a perfectly fitting dress and a great pair of shoes, especially when you can transition those pieces into fall.

It is a well-known saying the journey of a thousand miles begins with a sin gle step. Though the quote often borders on cliche, it crystallizes the gen esis story of many successful businesses. One such story comes from Scott Patton and how he realized the dream that became Wellspring Builders.

After a decade spent in construction under the employ of three repu table Nashville contractors, Patton and a friend he met immediately after college, decided to venture out on their own. With their families’ support and many prayers, they took a leap of faith and started taking on small jobs.

It was this little step that propelled their business into prosperity. Patton reflects, “We won a lot of clients by starting with small projects they could not get other contractors to do.”

Today, Patton is the sole owner following his busi ness partner’s retirement in 2021. While Wellspring has many projects to be proud of accomplishing over the years, Patton has not just built buildings - he also created a solid corporate culture. This humble and hardworking approach to building gave them momentum, leading to projects like an 80,000 square foot storage facility for Iron Mountain Records Management. As Patton recalls, this project, in particular, gave Wellspring “the ability to go to new clients and show them we were capable of more than our company’s age or size might indicate.”

If we stumble, I only ask that we learn from that experience and use the lesson in future endeavors.” Patton continues to prioritize his team's success and encourage them in all aspects of their lives, noting that “if they are winning, I’m likely winning too.” With this attitude, along with the support of his wife Valerie, whom he calls “the best partner I could imagine,” it is no wonder Wellspring has become one of the most successful commercial building compa nies in Tennessee. What gets Lord most excited about the Gather Mobile Studio is knowing he’s capturing the special people in a couple’s life with a stunning portrait they will cherish for years to come. He remembers visiting his grandparents as a child and seeing family photos all around the home. Today he strives to leave the couple with elegant art of their fam ily and friends they are proud to display as they start their life together. They can also receive a printed album of the portraits along with personal messages left by the guests, a more polished option for the traditional guest book.
Lord wanted to ensure that everyone working with him was treated the same, from the intern to the talent.
As for the experience itself, Austin offers wedding guests different pose options and guides them on showcasing their best features. After a decade of studio work, he can help any one feel comfortable quickly, even if they are intimidated. Immediately following their photoshoot, guests can view a digital image. The best part? “Seeing their face light up at what I’ve captured.” The Gather Portrait experience only takes a couple of minutes, and everyone leaves with a maga zine-worthy cover image and a smile.

Gather Portraits brings something new with a timeless impact to wedding receptions across middle Tennessee. Instead of an automated iPad photo booth with goofy props, photographer Austin Lord offers a posed experience similar to a magazine cover shoot. The reaction from guests is always the same, “I want that on my wall.” Lord became interested in photography in high school after picking up his Dad’s film camera. He remembers the excitement of taking the roll of film to be developed at Walmart. In 2012, Lord moved from Dothan, AL, to study guitar performance at Trevecca Nazarene University. Within a few weeks of being on campus, he had a job pho tographing basketball games. Lord soon began to pursue photography as a career, realizing that guitar perfor mances were filled with nervousness and tension, yet he never felt that way behind the camera. During 2014, Lord covered more than 20 weddings as a lead or backup photographer. At the start of his junior year, he decided to leave his college program to pursue pho tography full time. His parents, recognizing his talent and passion, were supportive. A year later, Lord was invited to NYC to work with the iconic Annie Leibovitz, best known for her Rolling Stone cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. His responsibilities included lighting setup for magazine shoots with publications like Vanity Fair and Vogue. While his time in New York helped Austin perfect his tech nical skills, he also dialed in how he wanted the experience to feel working with him. He immediately recognized that everyone in NYC was trying to climb to the top and often saw this at the expense of human connection and kindness.

When you think of Nashville, a few things likely come to mind – live music, iconic buildings, maybe even hot chicken. But as more and more people have been flocking to music city, Nashville has begun to undergo a cultural renaissance. One of the results of this resurgence is a burgeoning new art scene. We sat down with Michaelan Mena, one of the up-and-coming artists breathing new life into Nashville’s art scene.
Mena has always been an artist with a background in different forms of creativity. Her journey into painting began almost out of necessity, as she was struggling to find pieces in stores or online that aligned with her aes thetic vision. “I wanted large, textured pieces that felt peaceful, unique, and original, and I simply couldn’t find what I was envisioning,” so Mena did what most artists and innovators would do – she rolled up her sleeves and decided to experiment. This was the beginning of her painting career; as Mena put it, “the process of ‘playing’ lit a spark that turned into a flame.”

And that flame is readily apparent in Mena’s work as it is imbued with passion and conviction. The hallmarks of her work are texture, using materials like sheetrock, acrylic paint, tissue paper, and scale; her canvases are typically no smaller than 30x30. The visual impact of these features is quite dramatic and multi-faceted, which is surprising given she draws her inspiration from archi tecture and nature. “I love the texture and form of build ing materials used in architecture and the seamless lines, blending of colors and emotion of nature.”
As talented as she is, she’s also as down-to-earth and humble as you would expect from a Nashvillian. When asked how she views art, she notes that “there’s an artist inside every human being because God creates us, and He is the ultimate artist. We are made in His image, and therefore we are all creatives in some way; we just have to explore a little to tap into it.” Mena works through her website and Instagram @artbymichaelanmena to provide custom pieces throughout the Nashville area.
