Maybe it's decreasing the toxins in your home, eating better, adding beneficial hobbies to your life. Perhaps this year, you turn off your phone and read more, pray more, or grow more meaningful friendships. There is never a better time to start than now.

TOP NOTCH DENTISTRY IN THE CITY BETWEEN THE LAKES DR. BERRY Dr. Zac Berry spent his early childhood years here in Mount Juliet, but it has always been a place he considered home. He attended Dental school at University of Tennessee in Memphis before completing a hospital residency in Birmingham, AL. Working at UAB allowed him to learn sedation and advanced surgery techniques. His goal has always been to provide a wide variety of services under one roof. He says, "I want to be able to do as much for my patients as possible, without sending them all over town."

Dr. Berry has been working to change the community's perspective about dentistry, by providing excellent care and a cutting-edge dental facility in one practice. With many complex procedures that can now be completed in just one appointment, he still brings a friendly neighborhood vibe with his customer oriented staff.

Mount Juliet Family Dentistry offers everything from dental cleanings, root canals, single visit crowns, implants, and even a 3d imaging and printing lab. They are also known for their stunning dental makeovers through cosmetic procedures such as straightening, whitening, bridges, and veneers. And, yes, they also do Botox injections! Dr. Berry loves the feeling of wowing a patient with a straightforward and pain-controlled experience when they visit.

Their current patient base ranges in age from one to 100! Dr. Berry understands the importance of building a relationship and

works to protect it with both children and adults. He recommends bringing children in before the age of two, but he says, "I don't care how much we get done at the first appointment, I just want to make sure my youngest patients start with a wonderful experience from the get go." He wants little ones to learn that it's okay to go to the dentist, and he does not want their parents to stress.

For the initial visit, they ease them into the experience through play activities and the treasure chest, which is always a hit. As time progresses, if an issue does arise, he'll be able to handle it because he has built a foundation of trust. “I think one of the most important things I can do is just listen and try to connect with a patient, so I can provide the type of care they desire.”

If you ever spend time at the office, its obvious that the staff enjoys working together. Dr. Berry feels lucky to have such an incredible team and says they have a lot of fun! Moving back to Mt. Juliet has been a dream come true for Dr. Berry and his family. He always envisioned working in the same city where he lived, where he can care for the people in his own community and give back. being able to care for the firefighters who work next door , for his neighbors, and the people he is proud to call a part of his community. “MJ has welcomed us with open arms, and I am so excited to be building my practice here for the people in this community.”

On the weekends, he and his wife enjoy anything that gets them outside with their kids, ages 2 and 10 months. They also love going out to eat at Mount Juliet local restaurants.

Traveling is also essential for his family, and they try to make it out to Big Sky, Montana, every year to celebrate where he and his wife met. Zac also has a passion for photography and has incorporated this into his practice to help better communicate and educate his patients. Dr. Frankenfield

Many locals will say that Mt. Juliet is the best of both worlds.

It has a small-town feel with the amenities and opportunities of a larger town. Perhaps one of the greatest indicators that Mt. Juliet has arrived, though, is the availability of world-class healthcare right in our backyard.

R. Scott Frankenfield, MD, MMHC, chief of staff and director of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital (VWCH) has played an active role in helping make that happen.

While Dr. Frankenfield is not native to Mt. Juliet, he grew up visiting family here and was familiar with its charms. In 2009, he and his wife decided to move to Mt. Juliet with their seven children. He transitioned his medical focus from family medicine to emergency medicine during that time.

For his first ten years in Middle Tennessee, Dr. Frankenfield worked as an emergency medicine physician staffing various ERs throughout the region.

When Vanderbilt began the process of purchasing what was then Tennova Healthcare–Lebanon, they felt it was important to have an ER director in place to help prepare for the transition. The facility's CEO contacted the physician group that employed Dr. Frankenfield at the time and asked if he was interested in taking on the role. For Dr. Frankenfield, it was a great opportunity and one that would keep him close to home.

Dr. Frankenfield describes the facility's evolution since he joined in 2019 as going from "good to great."

Improvements began almost immediately after the acquisition in everything from maintenance on the parking lots and roofing to overhauling equipment like computers and cardiac monitors.

VWCH's ultimate goal is to transition from a community hospital to a regional facility, and with many of the changes already implemented, it is close to fulfilling that goal. Among the changes, Dr. Frankenfield is most excited about including the addition of interventional cardiology and neurology specialties, areas in which having on-staff experts can be lifesaving in an emergency, and the emergency department's designation as a Level III trauma center. This designation indicates the facility has the resources for emergency resuscitation, advanced surgical services, and high acuity intensive care.

"The changes that Vanderbilt has made are things that can take the hospital to the next level. They truly are doing everything possible to improve quality and efficiency," Dr. Frankenfield explained.

Other updates include incorporating a new hospitalist medicine group, a new electronic health record (EHR) system that connects VWCH with other hospital systems and facilities to better support continuity of care, as well as pediatric telemedicine to assess young patients and determine whether a trip to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is needed, to name a few.

"From an emergency medicine perspective, if you live in Wilson County, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't stay here for medical treatment," Dr. Frankenfield said. "I honestly believe people who haven't been here in years wouldn't recognize it. Everything has improved—the culture of caring, the professionalism, and certainly the quality of care."

While Dr. Frankenfield and the team at VWCH certainly hope that you don't have a reason to visit them, if you do, they want to reinforce that it's a place you can trust. And even better, it's close to home.

FLEDGLING NONPROFIT SEEKS TO GROW ARTICLE BY SLOANE LUCAS

Seven years ago, Tracey Chapman suffered various illnesses that she would later address not with medication but with nutrition. That wake-up call inspired her, and today she is the president of fledgling charity Makers Farmacy, a nonprofit that aims to grow and donate fresh produce year-round using sustainable vertical aeroponic technology.

“When families fall on hard times financially, they are sometimes forced to compromise by choosing to fill their bellies over choosing quality nutrition,” she explains. “Food pantries – although doing a great work in our communities – typically only have access to shelf-stable food items.” Makers Farmacy aims to fill the gap locally in Wilson County, donating fresh food that fuels and heals.

In April, Chapman put her past professional experience in the nonprofit sector to work and established her own charity, holding its first public fundraiser in October. Their phase one goal is to raise $30,000 to purchase and maintain an indoor growing facility.

The organization is 100 percent volunteer, including its four-member board. “We approached several people that had a passion for health and nutrition along with certain skills and assets that would help us grow,” she says.

Chapman and her board focus on fundraising and targeting passionate donors who believe in their vision.

Proving viability is critical to that next step. “There are people willing to invest in an idea – and then there are people that are willing to invest once something is up and running,” she explains. The organization got started with an initial investment from friends. “I appreciate those that have embraced the vision and are helping us make it possible,” she says.

Chapman’s dream is to expand into more communities and employ veterans and underemployed people as growers. “The opportunities,” she says, “are endless.”

Christian, a recent California transplant to Mount Juliet, became interested in Acupuncture after watching her mother finally find some relief after pursuing this type of treatment for chronic migraines.

As Christian got a little older, around 15 years old, she suffered a horseback riding accident resulting in a concussion and some broken ribs. Jared and Jen Fisher, Organic’ly Founders and Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (FNTPs), started their journey to create this health food company after Jen was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. She struggled with various symptoms that were triggered in part by wheat, grains, gluten, dairy, and soy. This set them on a journey to try and make a difference in the food industry. O R G A NIC A P P L E C INN A M O N MUF F IN S INGREDIENTS • 1 package of Organic’ly cinnamon baking mix • 1 cup unsweetened cinnamon applesauce • 2 whole eggs • 1 and ½ cups of milk • 3 tbsps of liquid coconut oil (melt if necessary) • ½ cup chopped apples (optional) DIRECTIONS 1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

2. Pour batter into lightly greased muffin tins.

3. Bake at 350° for 30 mins.

4. Insert a toothpick, and if it comes out dry, they’re done. Optional Hand mix in 1/2 cup of chopped organic apples after you blend your batter.

O R G A N I C C H O C O L AT E CUPCAKES WITH VANILLA FROSTING INGREDIENTS • 1 package of Organic’ly cocoa baking mix (https://organiclyfoods.com) • 2 whole eggs • 1 and ½ cups of milk • 3 tbsp of liquid coconut oil Frosting Ingredients: • 2 tbsp milk • 2 cups organic powdered sugar • ½ cup softened butter • 1 and ½ tsp of vanilla extract

CUPCAKE DIRECTIONS 1. Blend all ingredients until smooth.

3. Bake at 350° for 20 mins.

4. Insert a toothpick, and if it comes out dry, they’re done.

FROSTING DIRECTIONS 1. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to beat softened butter until light and fluffy (2 to 3 minutes).

2. Add in vanilla extract and mix until combined and smooth.

3. Add in powdered sugar 1 cup a time, mixing in-between additions until smooth.

4. After adding in the 1st cup, add in milk and whip until smooth before adding in the 2nd cup of powdered sugar. When the cupcakes are thoroughly cooled, frost immediately. Sprinkles are optional, but we think life could sometimes use a little more sprinkle. Enjoy!
