Justin Gray and his wife, Sarah, met like many other loving couples, working together. It wasn’t long before they realized they shared a distinct love for hosting and entertaining. At the time, the pair lived in Brooklyn, New York, planning upwards of twenty events yearly! With so many events, Justin quickly found himself searching for party-planning tools that could make these events easier to plan and navigate. “I wanted something straightforward, very to the point,” Justin explains. “I didn’t need a lot of bells and whistles... I thought, ‘I can build something for myself,’...and so I came up with the idea for what is now Potluck.us as a way for Sarah and me to have one way to organize all of this fun stuff we were doing.” And so, Potluck.us was born. After a move to Nashville, two kids, and two houses later, Potluck.us launched in October 2021. It made its mark as an online platform designed to simplify the experience of party

planning and hosting, keeping it functional and completely private. Potluck.us is a subscription-based model that does not bombard its users with the noisiness of advertising and spam or selling data to third parties. It is not only a place where you can see who is bringing a specific item to an event but also provides communication among guests using a private chat box. The real gem for those using Potluck is the Moments Pages, where guests have the space to collect and share unlimited photos from their events. And what’s more, every guest that a host invites gets to enjoy all of these functions completely free! You can’t find this anywhere else except at Potluck. “What’s motivating for me is to prove that the general public is ready and willing to pay a small price to get a much better experience,” Justin describes. GROWING UP WITH A LOVE OF BARBECUE

Growing up in Memphis, one is surrounded by barbecue. This was especially true for West Tennessee natives Aaron and Courtney Payne, who were high school sweethearts before relocating to Nashville. Food was a significant part of their cultural upbringing, including the annual monthlong celebration Memphis in May. Courtney admits she didn’t know M-Town was known for BBQ until she moved away to Nashville, and everyone was talking to her about it. Being in a new city expanded their palette, including cooking styles from Texas, North Carolina, and Kansas City. Aaron loves them all, stating, “when you grow up with a love of BBQ, it naturally makes you want to try other types.” Courtney agrees they all offer something different, which makes the flavor of each method unique. For this couple, family and barbecue have always been intertwined. According to Aaron, “the flavor of Memphis-style barbecue reminds me of growing up there, hanging out with my friends, and cooking out in my family’s backyard. It definitely tastes like home.” Central BBQ was a clear favorite; Aaron even moved to Nashville with an extensive collection of their cups. Courtney loves the BBQ nachos, and Aaron swears by the traditional pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw, a well-known Memphis twist. With his strong family background, Aaron thrives on building solid, long-term relationships with buyers and

sellers as the owner of Payne Property Group. He also gets to showcase his creativity when structuring a deal so that everyone feels rewarded in the end. Hilary M. says, “he got us everything we wanted and more!” In early 2021, Aaron became a training agent with Genovations Realty. In this role, he can give back to new licensees and show them his process of navigating this red-hot market while still giving the best service to your client. Across the board, it is evident that Aaron loves working one-on-one and investing in people - his clients, new agents, his family, and the community. When asked about their favorite local activities, Courtney & Aaron simultaneously chime, “our church!” They love the vibe of Mount Juliet with its mix of urban and rural, where people are welcoming and friendly, and with a hometown feel they can appreciate. As for local food fare, they are big fans of Martin’s BBQ and the newly opened Paper Mill Restaurant. Running two entrepreneurial businesses isn’t always easy, but the main focus continually comes back to the family. More than anything, Aaron and Courtney enjoy the closeness they have developed with their two kids by spending more time together at home. Their Memphis roots gave them the discipline to work hard and reinforced the importance of family and good food.

The Ghost Hunting Cowboy

Suppose the beginning of fall has put you in the mood for ghost hunting, particularly of the cable series variety. In that case, you’ll likely become accustomed to hearing a particular script play out. “What’s your name?” “How did you pass?” “Is there anything you want to tell me?” If you’re looking for a break from this stale dialogue, you might want to try TikTok, where Mount Juliet’s own Kalani Smith has racked up two million followers. You might ask what makes Smith’s approach unique to merit that popularity. “I’m the combination of authentic paranormal content with a Gen Z attitude,” he explains. “My non-traditional approach with singing and humor could be why I get as much paranormal activity as I do. I treat them like I’m talking to a living person.” Perhaps this is why he’s branded himself ‘The Ghost Hunting Cowboy.’ Smith offers a distinctive investigative approach that one might expect from a Mount Juliet man who doesn’t take himself too seriously. On Smith’s YouTube channel, he uploads full-length investigations, interspersed amongst short, humorous clips, such as line-dancing in a ‘haunted clown motel’ and playing Ouija with a Waffle House waitress. It doesn’t get much more southern than that, and what’s more, he’s also a God-fearing man. Though some will assert that belief in the paranormal and religion are separate and contradictory concepts, Smith doesn’t see it that way; he talks openly about his faith stating, “I’m a Christian, and I think what I find solidifies my belief in life after death.” This belief in the paranormal started for Smith when he was merely 11 years old, right here in Tennessee. He saw a Civil War-era drummer boy at the Shiloh battlefield. So convincing was this apparition

that Smith assumed it was just a real person. However, it turned out to be a spirit. And ever since then, he’s been trying to make sense of it. Through his work, he doesn’t seek to evangelize to skeptics but rather to understand for himself what he saw and to bring others along for the ride. “I’m not in the business of making people believe,” he asserts, “but more interested in building my base of understanding and belief in the paranormal.” After pursuing ghost hunting full-time and exploring places like Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Greenville Manor, and other haunted locations, he’s come to some form of understanding of the paranormal. “I feel there is a metaphysical environment or parallel that we cannot physically see. I also think that due to certain environmental conditions changing, the veil between our world and the other world is thin enough at times to bleed over.” While he’s motivated by genuine curiosity and passion and has spent time pondering the implications of his work, he’s still a laid-back, down-to-earth southern man with good humor and a keen sense for entertainment -- which is a refreshing break from the seriousness that pervades the field. He provides a very reasonable answer when asked whether anybody can perceive the paranormal. “I think many people experience paranormal activity, but their mind chooses not to notice it. In the same breath, I feel that some people assume all things are paranormal comparative to a logical explanation on why things happen.” Indeed, it’s difficult not to notice Smith and his southern charm, whether in the physical world or the parallel – he’s liked (and likely entertained) by both the living and the dead alike.

Julia Child famously described a revelatory meal of oysters and fine wine as, “an opening up of the soul and spirit.” For Mayter Scott, this connection was instilled early on. Her family planted the seed (literally and figuratively) of this love through farming, canning, and cooking country dinners. “The first meal I learned how to make was a ‘country dinner’ for my daddy consisting of cornbread (no sugar), fried squash, fried okra, black-eyed peas, slices of garden tomatoes, and fresh onion slices with a cold cucumber salad.” She goes on to describe the different roles and talents that members of her family had in the preparation of food. “My granny made the best chocolate gravy that she served over fresh cathead biscuits on days I caught the bus at her house.” Given these formative childhood experiences, it was a natural progression for Scott to build a career in the food industry. “I currently provide marketing, public relations, social media management, and photography for my favorite restaurants. I only work with the best.” It would be a mistake to characterize her as a mere ‘foodie.’ The way in which she describes food, from her rich childhood memories of her grandma’s biscuits to her recommendations for good food in town, is downright poetic and echoed in her artistic talent for capturing food with her trusty Nikon. “I love documentary-style photography. I love tight shots of messy food. I edit with high contrast and saturation. I want you to look at my photos and say, "I WANT THAT." I photograph food how I want to eat it.” After having built a successful, full-time career in food, lifestyle, and restaurant photography (a career whose highlights include being published in the Wall

Street Journal Magazine), Scott has her eyes on a new venture. Along with her husband, Winston Scott, who is a talented woodworker, she purchased a farm for which the couple has big plans. “We prayed for this land and God gave us the desires of our hearts through his faithfulness; we are going to use it to bless others.” Scott intends on merging her and her husband’s respective skills to build a lifestyle brand called The Shack and The Skillet. She describes it as combining, “food, photography, pottery and Winston’s woodworking to make small home goods and heirloom style furniture.” Based on her undeniable talent and infectious enthusiasm, we can’t wait to see this dream realized. In addition to her aforementioned gifts, you might assume Scott also has very discerning and impeccable taste when it comes to food — and you’d be right. Therefore, we would be remiss if we didn’t use the opportunity to interview her to get some of her recommendations for the best food in and around town. Let’s start with the necessities: coffee, beer, and barbecue. For “exceptional coffee and culture,” Scott recommends CREMA on Hermitage Ave. For delicious IPAs, she recommends Tennessee Brew Works. For barbecue, “you better be going to Shotgun Willies for the ribs, brisket, smoked sausage, sides, and the banana pudding!” She also recommends Chef’s Market, MacHenry’s Meat & Three, Black Rabbit & the Farm House, Butcher & Bee + Red Headed Stranger, and Lockeland Table. Pick any one of these fine establishments and who knows? You might just have a culinary revelation of your own.

Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

If you’re entertaining a smaller intimate group and really want to impress their tastebuds, we suggest, Lorina Sparkling Lemonade (you can find this at World Market), Combier Curacao Le Bleu and Highclere Castle London Dry Gin for that ultimate luxury cocktail taste. INGREDIENTS • Ice • 2oz. Lorina Sparkling Lemonade • 2oz. Combier Blue Curacao • 2oz. Highclere Castle Dry Purple Gin • 1 Rosemary Sprig

DIRECTIONS 1. Fill your glass with ice, pour the Highclere Gin over the ice. Then Pour the Lorina lemonade over the ice and slowly pour the curacao into the glass, allowing it to settle to the bottom of the cup. 2. Add your rosemary garnish and serve immediately.
