LIFESTYLE LETTER
Beautifully You: The STYLE Issue One of my favorite things about publishing Mount Clemens City Lifestyle is discovering the people who make everyday life a little more beautiful. Sometimes it's through a thoughtfully designed home. Sometimes it's a work of art, a favorite handbag, or simply discovering the colors that make you feel your best. Lately, I've been thinking about the idea of making everyday life a little more meaningful. Some people call it romanticizing your life. I think of it as slowing down long enough to appreciate the moments we usually rush past. For me, it's pouring my morning hot chocolate into my favorite, beautiful mug instead of the closest one in the cupboard. It's playing soft music while I get ready for the day. Those little rituals remind me that beauty isn't reserved for special occasions. It belongs in our everyday lives. As I looked through this month's issue, I realized every story shares that same spirit. Betsy Peters finally transformed the home she'd dreamed about for years. The Anton Art Center's ArtParty celebrates creativity and community. Stylish Upscale Boutique encourages us to choose pieces we truly love, while our color feature reminds us that sometimes choices that matter most are the ones that simply make us feel our best. Maybe that's the real definition of style. Not chasing what's new. Not copying someone else's idea of beautiful. But creating a life that reflects who you are. This month, I hope you'll find one small way to make an ordinary day feel a little more extraordinary. Turn on music you love. Sit on the porch a little longer. Visit a local gallery. Finally start the project you've been dreaming about. Do something simply because it brings you joy. After all, the most meaningful life isn't the most expensive or the most perfect. It's the one that's authentically, beautifully yours. See you around town,

FOR TWENTY YEARS, BETSY PETERS KNEW SHE WAS RIGHT. WITH ONE CALL TO CABINETRY BY BETTER BILT, SHE PROVED IT.
ARTICLE BY MARSHALL ZWEIG | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ESTON ASHER IV, SKYVIEW EXPERTS
FALL OF
THE WALL Betsy Peters knew she was right about the wall. She'd known for years. The wall divided her kitchen from her living room, and it made the house feel smaller than it was. Her husband Ed said it was a load-bearing wall, so it couldn't come down. And besides, Ed liked the house exactly as it was. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . "I knew he was wrong," Betsy says. "I knew one day it would happen if it was meant to be." Ed passed away in February of last year. The next day, sitting in the house they'd shared for forty years, she realized, "Oh my gosh, I’m in control of everything in my life now. Everything." So Betsy made one phone call. By July, the work had begun — not just on the wall, but on the house she'd wanted for two decades. "I wanted it to be an entertaining house," she says. Who did Betsy call? Danielle Malecki of Cabinetry by Better Bilt. Danielle had designed for Betsy's family twice before. But this one was the largest of her career: kitchen, primary suite, laundry, three bathrooms, railings, drapery, wallpaper, furniture, everything — right down to the pillows on the sofa. Danielle notices houses the way some people notice weather. "I redesign every house I go into in my head," she says. Restaurant bathrooms too: she comes out and tells whoever she's with to go look at the tile.

“I KNEW ONE DAY IT WOULD HAPPEN… I WA S R IGH T, HONEY IN HEAVEN. I WA S R IGH T.”
“We can't help ourselves,” adds Andrea Yeip, Cabinetry by Better Bilt’s owner. “People live with something every day for years. They just don't know that if you move it over here, you would have so much more room, or a better flow to your kitchen. Sometimes, being an outsider, we see things that maybe you wouldn't." Removing the wall required a structural engineer, Danielle's first. It also meant losing an entire storage wall, so the refrigerator and both pantries had to go somewhere, and so did a 48-inch range, a double oven, and a drawer microwave. Betsy even wanted a dining table, but the room said no. So instead, Danielle gave her a massive island with six seats, plus a small table for four. There were more places to sit than she'd ever had… in a kitchen that hadn't grown by a single square foot. But Danielle wasn’t satisfied. "I liked the kitchen design, but I didn't love the tile that we’d selected," she says. "I always want to give clients something that I love." Wading through tile one day, Danielle found the perfect backsplash. Betsy's response: "I don't know how you came up with that, but that's amazing." Changing a backsplash is a detail. Refusing an adequate answer while there's still time to find a better one — that’s an approach. Danielle has clients who tell her, "You were more expensive, but you actually listened and designed the space for me, not for the current trends." "I don't like to give clients the same old same old," Danielle says. Betsy chose everything from Danielle's curated selections. "I know what I don't like immediately," she says. Then she moved in with her twin sister from July until December, asking not to be shown much. She wanted the full Extreme Makeover: Home Edition experience. She moved back into her home in December. Danielle was shooting a video on her phone to catch Betsy’s reaction. But Betsy went quiet. "I was in shock," she recalls. "There was too much to see at one time." CONTINUED >

Where the wall had stood, the kitchen now ran straight into the great room, with continuous flooring underfoot. The wood shelves in the kitchen picked up the cabinet color from the primary suite. The new stair railings had been stained to match the cabinetry. Neutrals throughout, with pops of blue and purple where Betsy wanted them. On the largest wall were three commissioned prints: Danielle’s suggestion, and the one expense Betsy nearly cut. But she’s glad she didn't. In fact, seven months later, Betsy says she wouldn't change a thing. Not a fixture, not a staging piece. On a project this size, that's rare. Ask Betsy which room transformation was the most pleasant surprise, and she doesn't hesitate: the laundry room. It used to hold a washer, a dryer, a sink, and a closet of Ed's tools she never touched. "I don't do tools," she says. It’s full of pantries now. It’s functional, cozy, and totally hers. For what she put into this house, Betsy could have bought a bigger one somewhere else. She knows. But she's told her children she'll never sell. Still recovering from knee surgery, she's

looking forward to hosting two Christmas parties, and having twenty-some people spill from the kitchen into the great room… now that nothing stands between them. The basement's next. Two bedrooms, two baths, room for the grandchildren from Iowa. In the meantime, Danielle’s designing her sister's addition. Sitting in the open room where the wall used to be, Betsy says the thing she'd waited forty years to say. And she says it to Ed. "I was right, honey in heaven. I was right."
IN THE BACK OF THE CABINETRY BY BETTER BILT SHOWROOM, TWO PROJECTORS THROW CLIENTS’ FLOOR PLANS DOWN ONTO THE FLOOR AT FULL SCALE. Walk it first The back of Cabinetry by Better Bilt's Mount Clemens showroom used to be a warehouse. It's a design center now: tile, hardware, countertops, and cabinet colors all in one room. And in the middle of it, two projectors throw clients’ floor plans down onto the floor at full scale. Owner Andrea Yeip built it because she'd noticed clients struggling. "More and more, they can't visualize what we’re recommending," she says.
So clients walk though ideas that don’t exist yet. That’s how Betsy Peters's twin sister decided her new walk-in closet was big enough: she stepped into Danielle’s redesign. Renderings and screens only go so far. The walkable floorplan goes farther. "The more we can show people what it will feel like," Andrea says, "the better." A MASQUERADE. AN ICONIC THEATRE. THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER TICKET OF THE SEASON.
Great communities don’t happen by accident. They’re built by people who show up—for one another, for local nonprofits, and for the arts. ArtParty is one of those special evenings where all three come together, reminding us that supporting a worthy cause can also be inspiring, creative, and deeply rewarding. Presented by First State Bank, the Anton Art Center’s 35th Annual ArtParty is taking its annual celebration to a beautiful new setting this year, moving from its familiar tent to the historic Emerald Theatre in downtown Mount Clemens for an evening in one of the city’s most iconic venues. Honestly, I can't think of a better match. The Emerald has always been a place where people gather to be entertained, and on Thursday, September 17, it will become the backdrop for one of Macomb County's most anticipated evenings. This year's theme, Join the Masquerade, is perfect for our September Style issue. Think rich shades of purple accented with hints of orange, live music filling the theatre, incredible food around every corner, and a room full of people celebrating the arts. Masks are completely optional, but if you've been waiting for an excuse to wear that fabulous cocktail dress, sharp jacket or statement accessory, this is your moment. If dressing up isn't your thing, that's okay too. The only requirement is showing up ready to have a great time. Guests will enjoy a strolling Taste of Macomb featuring more than 20 local restaurants and caterers, live entertainment by The Groove Council, interactive art experiences, raffles, cocktails and the kind of conversations that remind you why community events matter. It's one of those rare evenings where you'll recognize familiar faces, meet new ones and leave wondering why you don't do this more often. CONTINUED >

When I sat down with Executive Director Matt Matthews, I expected to hear about the new venue and the masquerade theme. We talked about both. But it was one story that stayed with me long after our conversation ended. Last December, during one of the Anton Art Center's busiest weekends, the building's aging elevator failed, leaving a visitor who uses a wheelchair stranded on the lower level. Thankfully, staff were able to safely resolve the situation, but the incident changed everything. The conversation was no longer about maintaining an old elevator. It became about accessibility, dignity and making sure everyone who walks through those doors has the same opportunity to experience art. The replacement grew into a $235,000 project, and the community responded in an extraordinary way. Matt told me about generous five-figure donations, but then he smiled and shared the gift he can't stop thinking about—an envelope containing three dollars. Three dollars. That's the donation I can't stop thinking about either. Because communities aren't built by the biggest gifts. They're built when everyone decides to do what they can. Today, more than $170,000 has already been raised, proving just how much this community believes in the Anton Art Center and its mission. What surprised me most was learning that the elevator project has been supported through a separate, dedicated fundraising campaign, and The Art Center hopes to fully fund the project soon. ArtParty, meanwhile, continues to play a vital role as the Anton Art Center’s largest annual fundraiser, providing unrestricted support for exhibitions, art classes, youth programming, and community outreach throughout the year. This year’s Honorary Chair, Dr. Sharman Davenport, President and CEO of Turning Point Macomb, described the impact of art on survivors in a way I’ll never forget. Through Turning Point’s partnership with the Anton Art Center, survivors discover they aren’t alone. They begin to understand themselves better. Parents and children create together, finding a sense of calm and new ways to communicate. “It gives survivors an opportunity to express themselves in a way that doesn’t require them necessarily to speak it,” Dr. Davenport said. “It has made them feel like they’re not alone.” As I listened to Dr. Davenport, I realized ArtParty is about far more than celebrating the arts. It’s about celebrating hope. Hope that healing is possible. Hope that voices once silenced can be heard. Hope that a community willing to show up for one another can truly make a difference. Sometimes art doesn’t just reflect life—it helps people rebuild it. Some evenings simply entertain us. The best ones remind us why we're proud to call this community home. I'll see you at the Emerald. Tickets are $85 or $160 for two; available for purchase online at www.theartcenter.org/artparty.

MORE THAN
a Bag
A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 26
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything. CONTINUED >

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together.
FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME. 28

T H E I N S I D E R ’ S G U I D E TO PURSE-BUYING A handbag expert on choosing bags you’ll keep wearing — and loving — for years
ARTICLE BY MARSHALL ZWEIG
Stylish Upscale Boutique’s handbag specialist Karen Hewelt handles new, nearly-new, and vintage designer bags all day. She knows which ones age well, and which won't survive a single season. Her advice? Check leather first, label second. "It doesn't have to be a top-name brand,” Karen says. “It just has to be quality material.” Real Italian or Moroccan leather in an off-brand often outlasts a trendy designer piece. Classics win. "Steer clear of super trendy,” Karen advises; they’ll end up in the back of your closet. Simple, classic silhouettes are the bags you'll still reach for in five years. Build a bag portfolio. Some are statement pieces; others fulfill a specific function. Karen recommends a collection of four: everyday bag, crossbody, evening bag, and one you simply love. Skip vegan leather. It sounds virtuous, but it’s essentially plastic, so "it cracks
and peels,” warns Karen. Bags that last are made with real material. Store them right. A good purse comes with a dust bag for a reason. Keep purses separated too; Karen often sees patent leather ruined when color transfers from another bag stored against it. Keep the paperwork. Save the authenticity cards, receipts, and tags. Karen says "a lot of women don't ever think they're going to resell,” but change their minds later. Paperwork lets a bag command a higher resale price. Trust your taste. "Buy what you like," Karen says: the best-quality bag in the world is a waste of money if it's not you. If it lights you up, you’ll actually wear it. Let the collection move. Bored with one? Stylish Upscale Boutique lets you trade toward the next, so your closet can evolve with you. Stylish Upscale Boutique is at 36562 Moravian Drive in Clinton Township. For more info: (586) 790-7000.

Wear Colors That Truly
LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life.
KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.
CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.
THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cooltoned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.
BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!
PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly—wear what makes you feel beautiful.

TA I L OR E D TR ADITION A century ago, Mount Clemens merchants built lasting reputations through craftsmanship and timeless men’s fashion Photo contributed by James Sepesi
Long before department stores and national brands, haberdasheries— offering fine men's clothing and accessories—were a cornerstone of downtown shopping. Boley's Haberdashery at 42 Macomb Street became one of Mount Clemens' best-known men's furnishing stores after Eugene Boley assumed ownership in 1911. Originally established by A. Wayne Browne and Henry W. Wagner in 1904, the
shop specialized in hats, shirts, ties, bathrobes and other wardrobe essentials. The photograph captures Guy Browne standing proudly in the doorway, representing an era when local merchants knew their customers by name and quality mattered above all. As we celebrate style this month, it's fitting to remember one of the businesses that helped dress Mount Clemens more than a century ago.
