When reading a book, it all starts with the first chapter. For Sophia Maoli, it’s the story of her dream. In December of 2023, she opened the doors to Chapter One, an independent bookstore in her hometown of Mendham.
“Everyone is so happy to have a bookstore here again,” she says. “I had a customer come in and tell me how she used to shop at the previous bookstore as a kid, and now she’s coming to this bookstore and bringing her own child.”
While the store is cozy, it’s also very modern and bright. “My big thing was that I wanted it to feel new and clean, so there are a lot of whites happening in the store. The walls are light and the shelves are white because I wanted the books to really pop off the shelves.”
Instead of aisles of books, which can feel cramped, the shelves border the walls, so it’s easy to find the perfect book. The kids’ area has comfortable seating with small chairs and a rug, and a bunch of stuffed animals for kids to cuddle. Many want to take them home, which is an option because they’re all for sale.
Along with books from in-demand authors like Kristen Hannah and James Patterson, she has a nice array of local authors. “When I choose which books to order, I try to feed off what the community is asking for when they come in,” she says. She also has subscriptions to websites with the best sellers and what is predicted to be a hot book in the upcoming months. “My booksellers also stay very up to date with popular books.”
Sophia enjoys bringing in really cool authors like New Jersey native Harlan Coben and Jesse Watters from FOX News. “Recently, we had [actor] Keenan Thompson come in to sign his memoir, When I Was Your Age. He was so nice and was great with everyone who came in.” The store also has a shelf full of previously signed books for purchase, which is a big hit.
People can also join three book clubs. One is the Romantasy Book Club, which she runs, and it’s all romance and fantasy books. Another is called the Anything Goes Book Club, which encompasses all genres. The Silent Book Club, where people can bring in their book of choice and then read silently for an hour, allows for companionship
while pursuing what is usually a solitary hobby. At the end of each book club session, participants get 10% off their purchases that night.
Customers love taking part in these as well as other events. In May, she had a cartoonist visit and teach people how to draw, and plans are in the works for more fun events this summer.
In addition to great books and events, Sophia offers an incredible array of curated merchandise. “There’s a local company called Summer Love Designs, and we sell a lot of their jewelry. We also carry Little Words Project®, puzzles, journals, bookmarks, notebooks, and kids’ toys.” Many of these have a book theme, such as stickers that amusingly state, “What happens in book club stays in book club.” There are also some hair accessories and greeting cards, so it’s a one-stop shop for gifts. Of course, holiday-themed items are always in demand, including Christmas ornaments and menorah candles, Valentine’s Day items, Mother’s and Father’s Day gifts, teacher gifts, and graduation items.
Chapter One has a welcoming atmosphere with employees who are knowledgeable, avid readers capable of offering helpful recommendations for customers and their family
and friends. Speaking of family, she’s fortunate to have a lot of help with the business. Her father, Tom Maoli, her mother, Stephanie Caravela, and her stepfather, Rick Pina, actively support her endeavor.
Sophia, who is also an actress, singer, and dancer, hopes to one day open many more chapters, with a Chapter Two, Chapter Three, and so on. Since she loves baking, she also aspires to one day include a bakery on site.
“My goal in the future is to be the biggest independent bookstore in the country and be the place that people want to come to because they visited or saw it on TikTok or Instagram,” she says.
Sophia wants to show people why buying books at a local, independent bookstore is much better than ordering books online or going to one of those large commercial bookstores. So, come visit Chapter One, get a personalized experience, and live your best story while you browse, converse with staff, and meet others. You may even get to pet her little dog Lulu, who sometimes visits.

High-performance
racing experiences puts you in the driver’s seat
For Father’s Day, think outside the box and onto the track. Monticello Motor Club, located in Monticello, NY, offers adrenaline-pumping driving experiences on its premier automotive playground. MMC has 4.1 miles of driving track and a “Full Course” track which is 3.6 miles long with 18 turns and 450 feet of elevation changes.
“People love it,” says Creative Director Christopher Szczypala. “It’s so unlike anything they’ve ever done. A lot of people haven’t had the experience of driving on track, and many like high-performance vehicles.”
Taste of The Track and Private Instruction are two great packages they offer, and no experience is necessary. “Taste of the Track is a full-day experience and is a perfect glimpse of what it’s like to be a member of MMC because you get to try all different parts of the club,” says Christopher. “You’re on the track for quite a bit of the day with a private instructor, and then you’ll do some go-karting. You’ll also get a tour and have lunch.”
Private Instruction is a full-day event where participants get into their own vehicle or one of MMC’s high-performance track vehicles. They’ll learn how to handle the car’s full potential and improve their advanced driving techniques with substantial seat and track time. No prior track experience is necessary. Advanced Private Instruction is available as well with a fully equipped Porsche Cayman racecar.
Monticello Motor Club has a variety of vehicles for use, such as the BMW Competition M2, M3, and M5, Porsche 911, Performance Mini Coopers, Aston Martin Vantages and off-road cross carts. The Club also allows people to use their own high-performance vehicles.
The on-site clubhouse serves breakfast and lunch, and also has a make-your-own sundae bar. “We have a kitchen staff who work magic and our chef is Culinary Institute of America trained,” says Christopher. “We have a full locker room with showers and a members’ garage for storage of private vehicles. We also have concierge services so if our guests need help with where to go or what to do, we can assist with that. Most of our clients are very busy people, and when they’re here, they can just let go of everything. All they’re thinking about is the car and what their next move is going to be.”
MMC is typically open from mid-April through mid-November, and shuts down for the winter except for members taking part in snow driving and off-road activities. The Club is popular with people of all ages, and members include a good amount of women and teens.
“We’re like a new-age golf club; we have our own driving range, which is the track.”

Locals have something to cheer for about this Father’s Day. Legends Gallery at Frames on Main located in Chatham, is known for its incredible sports memorabilia and custom quality framing but in 2022, the store expanded into the music scene and more! The reaction has been phenomenal.
Greg Dailey, the proud owner of Legends Gallery at Frames on Main, has been in the framing industry for 30 years. “I’ve been framing concert posters, tickets, – you name it – for customers.” Greg and his staff can frame anything from a tiny photo to a 4’x8’ American flag as well as frame a collage using all types of personal memorabilia.
Greg also handles Art Restoration. Whether it’s a cherished photo, vintage poster or a valuable piece of art, Frames on Main brings damaged or aged items back to life with expert care and precision. Recently, Greg had the honor of framing pop art from Keith Haring, a handwritten letter from Napoleon, as well as Documents from 1794 for former NJ Governor Thomas Kean. All framing is done on the premises to keep your artwork, photos and cherished memories safe and sound.
Another new offering that’s creating a lot of buzz is his framed Hermès® scarves. “I had a customer come in three weeks before Christmas and she bought in three Hermès scarves,” says Greg. “They had these incredibly vibrant colors on them and we framed them. They were stunning.” He loved the final product so much that he ordered more. They are framed and available for purchase in the store. “It looked fantastic. People are coming in and we’re selling them.”
Greg sports side of his gallery, carries everything from framed classic autographed sports photos to jerseys, signed baseballs, autographed glove by Mike Tyson, signed football helmets, hockey pucks and incredible artwork of athletes in action.
“It has expanded tremendously,” he says. “It’s all over the map. With baseball season here, we’ve been selling more signed baseballs than ever.” Greg also keeps a lot of football merchandise in stock, and often has local players come in to sign autographs and take photos. These events are so popular that the line sometimes goes around to the back of the store!
“I’ve had Jets players come in, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, Number 5, a star defensive player for the New York Giants, were here for our meet the players event.”
Other professional athletes who have taken part in these events include Eli Manning, Mariano Rivera, Carli Lloyd, and Keith Hernandez. Ticket holders can bring merchandise they bought at Legends Gallery, or elsewhere. The sports merchandise and autograph events make great gifts for Father’s Day and for collectors all year round.
Greg says he’s constantly updating the gallery’s selection, fostering new ideas, and keeping the store interesting. “A lot of my heart and soul goes into this.” Greg thrives on finding new and exciting photographs and original paintings to fit every home gallery.

For men with longer-than-average arms, finding a shirt that fits well can be very challenging. Tom Shaw of Mendham knows this frustration well.
“A few years ago, I was sitting down reading and journaling, and with my arm bent, my cuff was all the way down at my elbow,” he says. He knew other men were having the same issues and set out to find a solution. “I have some family members who are in fashion so I was able to tap into those resources. I was surrounded by expert designers who were able to provide advice.”
In 2021, Tom founded Broadyarns, which offers three different styles of high-caliber shirts – Buttondown, Fleece and Henley – with sleeve lengths that are about two inches longer than most mass retailers.
“We’ve created something that fits the gap in shirts for the regular guy who’s not going into big and tall shops, and who desires a super high-quality shirt that they can put on and have it look and feel good.”
Every shirt is made in New York’s Garment District. “I want to keep control on quality and the people there are extraordinarily conscientious and care about their craft. Plus, our business is based in New Jersey, and the Garment District is in our backyard.”
The small-batch all-cotton shirts consist of organic and sustainable materials. “That has to do with our
values, and after a bit of field testing the market, we realized there’s plenty of demand from people who care about the environment in the demographic that fits the Broadyarns customer,” he says. “Plus, being eco-conscious also means building a durable garment that will last for years to come. Customers have literally said to me, ‘This is what quality feels like.’”
Many of the people ordering from his website are actually women. “They are giving me the dimensions of their fiancés or their sons and they’re so happy to have finally found this type of product for them.”
Tom’s wife, Mari, is a huge asset to the business. “She’s amazing when it comes to fashion and she’s extraordinarily creative.”
He and Mari have a blended family of six children and two dogs, Bingo and Henry, and when not working, the family loves going backpacking. “We went to the Spanish Pyrenees last summer and the year before that we were in New Mexico,” he says. “This year we’re going backpacking at Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon.”
For Tom, Broadyarns is not just a business, but a passion. “We’re just getting started and we’re so excited.”
