I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our grandmothers, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to local communities’ women.

They are movers and shakers, builders, and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

From Huggy Pets to Garbage Pantz, Innovation is a family affair

As a young reporter delving into the theme of “Women Who Inspire” for our May issue, I found myself drawn to write about someone close to home who inspires me every day: innovator and entrepreneur, my mother, Ana Meyer. Intrigued by her accomplishments, I sat down with her to uncover the story behind her inspiring journey.

Growing up, I always admired my mom’s ability to balance her career, family, and personal passions. She often emphasized the importance of leading by example, teaching me valuable lessons even in the simplest moments of our everyday life. One of her fundamental principles was to embrace life’s twists and turns, recognizing that unexpected changes could lead to new opportunities.

Her journey into product development began during her time as an architect at a global franchise company. She received advice from her mentor: “If you want to grow in corporate America, you need to put your pencil down.” Motivated by this, she pursued an MBA in Marketing, fueling her passion for innovation.

Inspired by Donny Deutsch’s show “The Big Idea”, she kept a sketchbook, and encouraged us to have one too. We wrote down ideas and sketched designs. The results are two exciting new products on the market, Garbage Pantz®, the instant makeover for your ugly trash can, and Huggy Pets® an infomercial children’s product sold across the country in major retailers including Rite Aid. Despite juggling a demanding corporate job, international travel, and raising a family, my mom’s newfound passion drove her to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams.

After putting us to bed, she stayed up to 3 am researching patents, manufacturers, attorneys, and more. She used vacation days to attend tradeshows. In addition to Huggy Pets®, she brought to market a second product after an infomercial executive advised her to “solve a common problem”. The results, Garbage Pantz®. Driving home on “trash day,” she questioned why we adorned our homes with decorations while neglecting the unsightly appearance of our trash cans.

As Garbage Pantz® gained traction and garnered attention from media outlets like the DIY Network and CBS, we became actively involved in our parents’ entrepreneurial journey. From assisting with prototypes, and filling orders, to Shark Tank, we were there every step of the way.

My mom’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. Transitioning into her role as Publisher and VP of Engagement for Chatham + Short Hills and Morris City Lifestyle, she found a new calling in storytelling and community building. “There’s magic in the power of storytelling and engagement,” she says. “I’m inspired by our communities and our advertising partners. As a forever student, I explore opportunities to make a positive difference and look for ways to tell your stories, both as community members and as clients, in a meaningful way.” Driven by a desire to make a positive impact, her mission is to share meaningful narratives through her various platforms, from print, digital, social media and events. Samir Patel, Blue Code Networks, an advertising partner said, ”Ana, you’ve built a community.”

As I conclude my interview with my mom, I’m filled with pride and admiration. Her story serves as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the profound impact of leading by example. In reflecting on her journey, my mom emphasizes the importance of flexibility and resilience in navigating life’s challenges. Her advice is, “In the sea of life, be ready to adjust your sail. You might be surprised by the adventure you experience along the way! If you have kids, take them along the journey with you.”

Made From Scratch Fresh, Authentic Food

ENJOY FLAVORFUL MEXICO CITY CUISINE CLOSE TO HOME

When Jennifer Teutli began offering authentic and delicious Mexican food in 2014, she did it from a small stand at local farmer’s market. “I was born and raised in Mexico City, so the flavors and seasoning are very important” says Jennifer. “Being at the market was a great way for people to get to know us and our food.”

The demand for her cuisine kept growing, and so did the business. “People started asking us to cater their parties, and it was very exciting because in Mexico, a typical luncheon, or “Taquiza,” would have beautiful Mexican pots and baskets and a lot of colorful decor and flowers. I really wanted to present our catering services that way because it was definitely new and original.”

She rented a commercial kitchen and then designed and added on a taco truck. “We participated in food festivals, farmers markets, and did lots of catering,” she says. “We also sold our packaged food out of wine stores in Chatham and Summit.”

Chef James Laird from Serenade restaurant in Chatham was an avid customer of the farmer’s market and of Jennifer’s offerings. Later, he had Mexican Spice cater his staff’s holiday parties and they all became friends.

Everything was going so well, then COVID hit. “Our catering and wine store business evaporated. We were not set up to be open to the public. I figured the most fun people were going to have in those days was getting take-out.”

Jennifer and her sister Andrea, who had just arrived from Mexico City, ran a fundraiser on a cool crowdsourcing platform that supports women (ifundwomen.com) so Mexican Spice could move to a new location where they could provide takeout and delivery. People were incredibly supportive, and in just three days, they raised enough money.

“We opened our restaurant on Main Street in Chatham two months later in September in a little place on Main St. that I’d always loved, and it turned out amazing,” says Jennifer. “We honor our donors with beautiful hand-pounded metal hearts made by artisans in Mexico City that hang on our Miracle Wall.”

Today, Mexican Spice has an additional taco truck and a mobile margarita/cantina truck. Although Andrea is no longer involved in the day-to-day business, Jennifer has a lot of help from her staff.

“They’re like my family,” she says. “They’re very hardworking. I don’t consider this my business, but our business.”

Mexican Spice caters many private events such as corporate meetings, high school graduations, birthdays, and anniversaries.

“It’s not just about providing food – our clients trust us with their most special celebrations, and Mexican Spice becomes part of their memory. That’s a big honor and responsibility.”

All the food is fresh, flavorful and healthy. “The salsa chipotle we make is inspired from my husband’s grandmother,” she says.

“Our zucchini soup is very traditional for a homemade lunch. Our salsa Verde is iconic of Mexico. The guacamole recipe comes from my mother.”

She and her staff cook from scratch every day. “I’m very particular about keeping the authenticity of the flavors, colors, textures and presentation.”

Jennifer is also on the Board of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce, helping coordinate events like A Taste of Chatham, which includes all the restaurants in The Chathams and beyond.

French techniques. Held on March 6th, it was a huge success, and it also raised $1200 for the Chatham Methodist United Church Food Pantry.

Jennifer and her husband Eugenio have raised their three kids, Rodrigo, Nico and Diego in Chatham, and absolutely love the town. Nico, who’s 20, works in the restaurant and Jeronimo, the father of her niece and nephew who recently moved from Mexico City and has ample experience in the food and beverage industry, is now the manager at Mexican Spice. At one time or another, many family members including her mother, father, sisters, kids, nieces, nephews, aunts, and even her grandmother, helped in the restaurant. It’s truly a family business!

Licensed cosmetologist Micaela Martinez learned a lot while working for others for nine years, but she inspired to do even more. With the encouragement of her clients, she went on to open Glow & Sculpt Studio in East Hanover this past January.

“My clients have followed me through everything because they’ve been wanting me to branch out on my own,” she says. “They knew I could do more, so that love and support encouraged and motivated me. I’m really happy that I did it.”

Micaela is busy getting women ready for summer by offering Brazilian waxes, underarm, leg, and bikini waxes and more. There’s also waxing for the entire face, including eyebrows. Men often come in for chest, back and facial hair removal.

“It makes me feel happy to provide these service and see the great reviews online.”

“The advantage of waxing is you get three to four weeks of no hair instead of having it grow back the next day with shaving. Also, you don’t get irritation bumps or razor bumps. You’re just smooth overall – it feels more like an exfoliation.”

Glow & Sculpt Studio also provides various types of facials. “The deep cleansing is one

of the most popular, as is the anti-aging. For men, we also provide a Glow Bro facial.”

Micaela provides all the services herself, and clients trust her to do them effectively and safely. “I was a trainer for five and a half years teaching others the proper techniques of waxing. I always use a hard wax, which is great for the skin, especially sensitive skin. The one I use is specifically geared for both fine and coarse hairs.”

The aftercare products she offers treat ingrown hairs and also provide exfoliation. They are gluten free, vegan, and are never tested on animals.

She also likes providing her clients with goodie bags, especially around the holidays. “It makes me feel happy to provide these service and see the great reviews online.”
