LIFESTYLE LETTER

What it means to be well. Last year I didn't have any anticipated surgeries. I wasn't having a baby or taking care of a postpartum body. I thought, This is my year. But I found myself at my doctor's office time and time again for strange sensations and alarms that my body kept sending off. And time and time again, they didn't add up to much. Which is good. But it made me wonder why an emergency signal was burning hot in my gut nearly every day. Something feels wrong. Something is wrong. Turns out that post traumatic stress disorder isn't just for veterans of war. It's for anyone with trauma. I spent so much of the latter part of 2022 just being thankful to be alive that I think my body forgot how to live in the quiet and blissful part of life; when nothing is wrong. A normal day was just so difficult to get through despite this being the case. My body, which had been through so much in three short years, had simply forgotten how to just "be." And what happens when there comes a time when we forget how to be? We make the journey back to ourselves. I paid close attention to what brought me stress and what came carrying joy. I drank more water. I had follow up doctor appointments because I just wanted to learn more about my body's flight response. I left my phone at home (a lot). I'm not saying that these things are a cure-all for when you get thrown off the trodden road but I think it's a good place to start. I think treating yourself to something that gets your body moving—a yoga class, an online workout routine, a walk around the neighborhood—should feel like a treat and not an obligation. The January Health & Wellness issue feels different this year because I've realized how quickly we can fall outside of wellness, even when we're in good health. I hope these stories and smiling faces remind you to keep your mind and body healthy this year and tend to them when they're ailing. Here's to a blessed year of health and happiness for our community!

THE POWER OF SUPPLEMENTING with myHMB myHMB delivers exactly what the body’s working muscles need — HMB. Scientifically known as β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate, HMB is produced naturally in our bodies during the metabolism of the essential amino acid leucine. Leucine is found in virtually all protein — we eat it every day in foods like soybeans, beef, alfalfa and fish, and some proteins have more leucine than others. It is difficult if not impossible to consume enough protein with supplementation or a healthy diet alone to achieve the effective amount of HMB. With myHMB, you can get the muscle-building power of HMB directly — this provides noticeable, long term benefits.

A Business Checkup AMY ESP RUNS MISSOULA BOOKKEEPING TO BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS

Ringing in a new year, big picture goals are often on our minds alongside a natural, healthy desire to take stock of the last year and see how things added up. For small businesses and nonprofits, Missoula Bookkeeper, founded by Amy Esp in 2017, is here to do just that. Esp discusses running her business, managing a small team, and maintaining a sense of balance, whether in life or in finances.

Amy Esp TELL ME ABOUT MISSOULA BOOKKEEPER! WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

We are a full-service bookkeeping firm for small businesses and nonprofits. We offer basic bookkeeping services along with payroll. We also do advising and analysis to plan for future financial decisions. We offer some personal finance consulting, which is similar to what we do for businesses— track spending and income, pay down debt, look at both business and personal finances to make a plan that makes the most sense for everything as a whole. Business and personal finances are so entwined.

DO YOU OFFER ANY SUPPORT BEYOND TRADITIONAL BOOKKEEPING SERVICES TO HELP YOUR CUSTOMERS MANAGE STRESS AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT?

We see a lot of connections to people’s overall wellbeing in working with their books. We don’t

want to be a traditional old-school bookkeeping firm where we just plug in numbers for taxes and send you on your way. We want to be seen as a resource to help navigate challenges and goals as a business owner. If a big change is coming—having a baby, thinking about moving, getting ready to retire—we can help manage the business through those transitions. One theme that comes up a lot is shame around our finances. We work really hard to bring a nonjudgmental approach, recognizing that we all have full, rich, chaotic lives that mean things don’t always look perfect.

HOW DOES MAINTAINING ORGANIZED FINANCIAL RECORDS CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL WELLNESS AND SUCCESS OF A BUSINESS?

Business owners have an intuitive sense of what’s happening in their business, but it’s not always based in reality. When you have actual numbers and data to look at, you may be in a better spot than you think, or worse spot, but you can make a choice based on the reality of the situation. If you’re not looking at those numbers, you’re not doing that.

RUNNING A BUSINESS SOUNDS DEMANDING. HOW DO YOU PERSONALLY MAINTAIN WORKLIFE BALANCE?

A big piece for me is having definite times when I close my computer. The other thing is, with a team of people I’ve been able to delegate different duties that aren’t the best use of my time, but still really need to happen.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO BE AN ALL-REMOTE TEAM?

It made sense with the work we do—a lot of it can be done around our other obligations. It’s a big part of what makes this work for both myself and my employees. That was a really big driver for me starting a business. I went through a divorce and the idea of working in an office 40 hours a week while managing all the kid stuff felt

super overwhelming. I did some exploration of what was out there. I actually sent a survey out to friends asking what am I good at, what should I avoid, what’s something you want to pay someone to do so you can avoid it? And this presented itself as a gap in the market.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO CONVINCE SOMEONE THAT HIRING A BOOKKEEPER IS A SMART INVESTMENT?

Is the work that you’re spending your time on the most important work? Doing your books every month is super important but it’s not making more money or bringing new clients in. So, if you’re spending time doing your books and running out of time to do the thing that actually builds your business, that’s the time to bring in a bookkeeper. THE MAGIC OF MOVEMENT Denise Graef shares warrior wisdom thanks to an autoimmune disease

The best type of workout is one that leaves you believing in yourself and bringing your best self forward. That’s the philosophy of personal trainer and master trainer, Denise Graef. Her training approach is inspired by the grit it takes to crush obstacles and the grace that springs from the support of others. Denise's passion for movement becomes evident in any of her classes. Each reach has a reason and each flex, a purpose. Denise relishes the act of simply moving. It's no surprise that she grew up in an active household. “I loved to tumble, dance, and play flag football. My parents nurtured and supported my endeavors,” said Denise. In her college days, Denise was on track to continue that active lifestyle when a life-altering diagnosis brought it all to a halt. CONTINUED >

“I noticed the bottoms of my feet hurting. I pushed through the pain and ignored my body's messages until, when I was 20 years old, I couldn’t walk. Every joint in my body screamed at me. It took until close to my 21st birthday before a devastating diagnosis was made. They told me it was Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).” Denise’s reaction to her diagnosis sparked a warrior within. “The fight was on,” she said. “I fought my way—many times the hard way and with limited resources—to become strong and overcome this autoimmune disease. I felt isolated and alone in the fight. I didn't know anyone else with the disease. For

many years, I tried to hide the fact that I had it.” Then, in 2001, Denise met two professionals who changed her mind about what living with RA could look like. Their support transformed her fight into a mission. “That was a game changer.” Eventually, Denise’s growing belief in herself eclipsed the fear of RA controlling her life. She even decided to join her sons in Taekwondo class. “I love the martial arts but back then I was petrified that I was going to hurt my joints. I humbly approached my master instructor and told him what the obstacle was. Once again, I was blown away by the support and care. Step by step, little by little, I built the strength and belief

I didn’t give up. On February 20, 2013, I received my black belt in Taekwondo.” Now, she aims to nurture confidence in all of her clients by training their minds as well as their bodies. One client has worked with Denise for eight years and achieved significant health gains. “When we first started, she was frustrated, out of breath, and feeling weak,” Denise said. “But, she kept showing up. Today, she is completely off her cholesterol medication, has increased her respiratory health, and has a beautifully healthy blood pressure. She only needed someone to hear her and help her see that not only were those lifestyle changes attainable, but she could thrive and inspire others as well.”

Denise’s life and lifework have become about so much more than managing RA. She helps people train their bodies but she also models the spirit of a champion. “Things circle around,” she said. “Now, I endeavor to have a similar impact on someone else's life no matter the obstacles they face...I like to tell people, ‘You are stronger than you think.’” Find Denise at Missoula’s Lifelong Learning Center or reach out through her website DeniseGraef.com.

The Heart of the Matter

Owner of Petersen Concierge Medical Camilla Petersen offers heart-centered information

Cardiac health remains a key focus in our healthcare with more than 50% of all healthcare monies directed toward diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease. With more and more investment directed toward innovation for disease management, we now have highend toolkits for early diagnosis and front-end prevention. We have an understanding of the nuanced interaction of many unique and individual factors that play a role in disease. With a committed and knowledgeable physician in your corner, you can detect and modify early signs of disease and focus on vitality and health for years to come. Calcium score can be a starting point for cardiac disease risk screening. A coronary CT scan with an overlay of AI-powered software can identify soft plaques within the arteries that may cause heart attacks. Reference laboratories provide physicians with an opportunity to look at inflammatory markers and gene and metabolic analysis that stratify risk and identify early signs of cardiometabolic disease. For a rapid yet personalized approach, there are several tests driven through proteomic

biomarkers that allow for rapid screening and ongoing personal comparison. A CAM (continuous ambulatory monitor) patch monitor elevates the efficiency and quality of ambulatory heart rhythm monitoring due to its in-office download ability. Pocket-sized portable devices allow any time heart rhythm recording and immediate relay to the physician. Many wearables can record vital signs continuously for precise and informative monitoring. Further, VO2 analyzers, whole body scanners, DEXA scanners, and movement platforms powered by cutting edge software compound and analyze data to provide myriad of reports and sequential assessments. The high-tech diagnostics paired with medical acumen are powerful tools for personalized and focused health-centric care. Unlike your car, you cannot trade your body in for a newer model. Take care of it and ask your doctor for your next step in wellness and longevity. Camilla Petersen is the owner of Petersen Concierge Medical, a curated bespoke private medical practice, providing wrap around personalized medical care for its clients.

Justin Tartol understands that his new customers may be a bit overwhelmed by the enormous menu of over 60 shakes and 80 varieties of iced teas at his business, Elevate Life Nutrition. But all that apprehension melts away as Justin and his staff guide them to the perfect mouthwatering selection depending on whether they’re feeling a little sluggish, trying to lose weight, or simply looking for a tasty (healthy!) drink. At Elevate Life Nutrition, Justin provides customers with meal replacement shakes, energy teas, hydrating Refreshers, and protein coffee drinks that are nutritious, satisfying, and pretty darn yummy. He sums up the concept of Elevate Life Nutrition in one sentence: “We trick people into being healthy.” And with bright eyes, a wide smile, and infectious high energy, Justin is a walking advertisement for his beverages. To drive the point home, he brings up photos on his phone as proof of his 40-pound weight loss, which he achieved simply by incorporating these drinks into his daily life. “I didn’t even notice the weight loss until people said something,” says Justin. “Plus, my pants started falling off.” Much more than a place to grab a drink and go, Justin and his team are committed to helping their customers be happy and healthy. “Not only can we help people lose weight, we can also help them gain healthy muscle mass, or simply maintain a healthy lifestyle,” says Justin. “We of course look at each person and see exactly what they’re going to

Elevated shakes come in delectable flavors such as Lemon Sugar Cookie and are packed with nutrients. Justin says, “Our shakes have everything you need in a well-balanced meal with 24 grams of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals for less than 300 calories.” He is proud that the base for all his drinks comes from the nutritional product company, Herbalife Nutrition. “What I like about Herbalife is that every product goes through rigorous scientific testing. I stand behind Herbalife and am really proud to be a part of their 40-year history,” he says. Each shake begins with a mixture of ice, water, and Herbalife’s shake mixes, then frozen fruit and toppings such as whipped cream and sprinkles can be added for an extra treat. which Justin explains is great for the digestive system, and helps you absorb nutrients. Protein-packed hot or iced coffee drinks and Refreshers—electrolyte-filled hydration drinks perfect for refueling after a workout—round out the menu. For Justin, helping the people of Missoula thrive extends beyond the doors of his business. “I’m always looking to be involved with local sports and the community,” he says. He does this by providing drink deals to high school and university athletes, and he recently sponsored the Big Sky High School cheerleading team on their trip to nationals. When you walk through the door of Elevate Life Nutrition you instantly become much more than a customer. “Something that sets us apart from your average coffee shop is that we want everyone who comes here to feel like they’re coming in to see a friend,” he says. “It’s corny, but we want to elevate their day. It feels good to know I’m serving people things that are good for them, and we’re making them feel good. When I get a new employee, I show them one of our reviews that says ‘Every time I leave Elevate, I feel better than I did when I walked in.’ That’s our goal.” See more information and their two locations at ElevateLifeNutritionMT.com.
