LIFESTYLE LETTER

Lead Mare

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Mike Tucker | MTucker@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR

Chelsea Lyn Agro | Chelsea.Agro@CityLifestyle.com

May is a magical time of year for equestrians like myself. It means the wildflowers are in bloom and the forest floor is dotted with yellow, white, red, and purple petals—all uniquely belonging to various high altitude flora. And if you're a horse-riding gal like me, you know the best vantage point is from the saddle and between the ears of a good mare. One of my mares, Raven, is a lead mare. She has an air about her and she charmingly contradicts most social norms when it comes to horses, which is the way she's been all her life. For instance, she can be alone, which is uncommon among her equine counterparts. She can and has survived my complete novice approach to horse ownership back 22 years ago when I'd give her a full-to-the-brim Folger's coffee can of sweet feed, twice per day because I was 10 years old and didn't know that that was too much. She steps confidently over any bridge, through any body of water, and will ride us out of the dark woods when I've misjudged the amount of sunlight left in the day. She also (stay with me here) poses for the camera—pricking her ears forward every time a camera is pointed at her. It sounds too romantic or poetic to say that she raised me, but it's true. Raven dates back to my earliest memories and has been there for every major life event—boyfriends, graduations, heartbreaks, my parents' divorce, my father's death, my wedding day, the birth of my son. The whole "kit and caboodle" as my father would say. And since I'm a child who's morphed into an adult and crossed that threshold with her in tow, she's surpassed the role that most parents play in their child's life. She's come with me to college, been my passenger on a cross-country drive, nursed me back into riding in my postpartum lunacy, and has—more than anyone else—been my life's witness. A lead mare is up for that type of challenge. They are built to withstand ignorance and they are forgiving, time and time again, only if you are their person. They are loyal, sassy, confident, strong, and they only ripen as they age. This May "Women's" issue I honor my lead mare Raven and all that she has taught me throughout our years together.

Women are at the core of Alpine Physical Therapy and PhysioTrekk, Alpine’s sister physical therapy clinic that offers urgent care and is available to walk-in patients. Co-owners Samantha Schmidt, Angela Listug-Vap, and Leah Versteegen were brought together when they were each hired as physical therapists at Alpine PT between 2005 and 2008. It just so happened that each woman came to the company with the goal of becoming a manager and eventual owner. “Our individual drive first presented the opportunity for us to work together,” said Leah. “And then, as we created our management and ownership team, we really saw how our strengths played off each other.” Plus, they all relish a day together playing on the river or in the mountains. Each of the three offices of Alpine PT offers a traditional physical therapy approach treating patients with pain and injuries resulting from a wide range of causes. Samantha describes PhysioTrekk as a new model of physical therapy. Patients can walk in or make a same-day appointment online and then pay cash for their services. There is no need to wait for a referral from a primary care physician, approval from an insurance company, and no need to wait—often a long time—for an appointment. Samantha explained why Leah, Angela, and Samantha decided to open PhysioTrekk. “From a busy mom’s schedule, which we all are, we juggle our kids’ schedules, our work schedules, our social schedules, and then just life of laundry, board meetings, grocery getting, etc. so adding another appointment in the mix just doesn’t get done sometimes,” said Samantha. Because of this, the idea of a walk-in model of physical therapy just made sense to them. “Our expertise lies in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and injury,” said Samantha. “We aim to treat the whole person and understand not only where the pain or injury is but what underlying or external factors may also be contributing.” Regardless of which location patients visit, they can expect their physical therapist to listen, diagnose, and offer treatment with the goal of reducing pain and improving movement.

“For us, running our businesses is not about profit, power, or recognition. It is about our ‘why’.”

As busy moms and business owners, these three women have learned the importance of leaning on each other both in business and in life. They also credit much of their success to the amazing team of people within their offices from aides to managers to the billing team. Samantha would give two pieces of advice to other women committed to running their own company. One: “Match your own personal values with the values that create the foundation for your company.” Two: “Find a team of others who share your values that you can lean on for support. Having a place to ask questions, listen to others’ experiences, and seek support is key.” Providing support to their patients, each other, and the Missoula community is important to all three ladies as shown by the long list of nonprofits and local athletic organizations that they participate in and

sponsor, from Garden City Volleyball to Ballet Beyond Borders. “Being an active and contributing member of our community is one of the values that we all share and we regularly come back to that community-centered value when making decisions about our business,” said Leah. “We want to give back and embed our values as part of this amazing place we get to call home.” For Samantha, Angela, and Leah the responsibility of owning a business goes far beyond clocking in and out. Leah said, “For us, running our businesses is not about profit, power, or recognition. It is about our ‘why.’ We believe in our profession and what physical therapists have to offer in health care. We believe in our community and how special it is. And we believe in how knowledge empowers progress—for ourselves, for our company and its people, and for our patients.”

HOW TO INTEGRATE HOUSE PLANTS IN YOUR HOME

PLANTS FOR BEGINNERS I am obsessed with plants! But, truth be told, I have a painted green thumb. This can be translated as “having a love for plants, killing some while successfully growing others.” I confess that in spite of my best efforts, I cannot keep orchids, ferns or succulents alive for more than a few weeks. I can, however, grow some things and do so very well! I can’t wait to share with you the plants that have lived in my home for over 15 years… successfully!! If you’re new to the plant world then I hope knowing that about me gives you the courage to try your hand at growing too. So, paint your thumb green (hypothetically!) and join me @silvertoothfarmhome as we grow things together.

Fertilizing is key. We don’t live on water alone and the same is true with plants. Plants need water AND food to thrive! I use a general indoor liquid plant food and simply add to my plants water as recommended on the label.

The Sisterhood of Business ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA SPAULDING

Burke Orizotti Real Estate loses a mother but maintains a legacy

28

O UR TOWN | R EAL ESTATE

When a family loses their matriarch, a hefty handful of responsibility is inherited to the heirs. In that handful is also a childhood laden with memories, sage words of advice, and business standards. Sisterhood, though, weaves a tight stitch so that the important things stay where they should. Stephanie Orizotti Nelson of Burke Orizotti Real Estate gives us insight on family and real estate.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH ME THE STORY OF BURKE ORIZOTTI’S ORIGINS? HOW DID THIS FAMILY BUSINESS BEGIN? Rachael was with our mom at the inception and beginnings of Burke Orizotti. At the time, I lived in Seattle and taught kindergarten. When my husband and I moved back to Montana with our oldest in 2018, I helped my mom as her assistant and Burke Orizotti was established and flourishing. I approached our mom about obtaining my real estate license and officially joined the team in February of 2020. Going to work with and learning from my mom and sister every day was, and is, truly a gift.

I’D LOVE TO KNOW HOW YOUR MOTHER’S VISION FOR THE COMPANY CAME TO FRUITION OVER THE YEARS. CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORY OR MOTTO YOUR MOM USED THAT HAS STUCK WITH YOU? Our mom loved mottos and special sayings. Their house displays decorative signs with sayings she loved and lived by. Personally, a saying she is known for in our family is “Love you to the moon and back.” Every celebratory card from her and phone conversation with her ended with those words. Professionally, I’m not sure it’s so much a saying but rather her way of life that will remain with me and motivate me. She exemplified integrity and unparalleled work ethic. She loved real estate and it was more her passion than work. Love of real estate and honesty in doing

business with people is a cornerstone at Burke Orizotti and started with our mom.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN DOING BUSINESS WITH SOMEONE, ESPECIALLY IN TODAY’S WILD MARKET? I agree with Rachael that trust among the team of people you work with is very helpful, especially for an enjoyable process. I would also add communication. Communicating your needs and desires to your team, and having a team that listens to them, builds trust. The market is competitive and constantly changing, but having a team that you communicate with and trust will make all the difference.

WHY IS MISSOULA SPECIAL TO YOU? In a way Missoula has always felt like home. When our brothers attended the University, and one played football, our family spent nearly every weekend driving from Butte to Missoula. I loved those weekends in Missoula, going to Griz games and getting a small taste of Missoula living. Now as an adult, my husband and I chose to raise our kids here because of the small-town feel while having great restaurants, nightlife, music, and options for schools to name a few. We love that getting outside to ski, float, hike, have a lake day or play in the snow is easily doable. We also believe in supporting local business and there are so many opportunities to do that in Missoula.

WHAT DO YOU THINK EACH OF YOU BRING TO THE TABLE WHEN IT COMES TO FAMILY RELATIONS AND BUSINESS? I believe I am the detail-oriented one of the two of us. I thrive in organization and making sure our ‘ducks are in a row” so to speak. Not to quote too much from the show The Office, but I would say I am more day-to-day (or CONTINUED >

“Maintaining a positive approach to this competitive market is contagious and so helpful.”

week-to-week) minded, Rach thinks big picture, and both are necessary. Our natural talents and strengths complement each other. We truly love being together. We are sisters but choose to be friends.

IF YOU HAD TO OFFER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SOMEONE LOOKING FOR THEIR FIRST HOME IN THIS MARKET, WHAT WORDS WOULD YOU OFFER THEM? Choose a realtor you trust. Speak to a local lender and go through the pre-approval process to know what you qualify for and are able to be comfortable with purchasing. Then choose to stay positive. Rach reminds us during our weekly office meetings to remain positive. I agree with this advice and remind myself and clients to do the same. Maintaining a positive approach to this competitive market is contagious and so helpful.

30

O UR TOWN | R EAL ESTATE

LASTLY, I’D LOVE TO KNOW TWO FAVORITE MEMORIES YOU HAVE OF YOUR MOTHER. IT CAN BE BUSINESS-RELATED OR PERSONAL. I am grateful to have so many memories with my mom. My family moved home to Missoula to spend as much time with her as possible and that is something I will always be thankful for. There are so many memories, but the weekly family dinners, daily (sometimes hourly!) phone calls, and seeing her each day come to mind as things I miss the most. She always made time for her family no matter what her day looked like. She would stop everything when the grandkids came into the office. She always picked up the phone when I called. She made people feel special, loved, and supported. Her family meant the world to her and all the memories of the ways she showed us her love are my favorite.

Roasted Fig and Goat Cheese with Honey Figs are high in fiber which promotes cardiovascular health. Figs contain high levels of protein, vitamins and essential minerals and are rich in potassium, which plays an important role in regulating blood pressure. The calcium in figs is more easily digested than in other foods, so it is good for your bones and teeth as well.
