There's a 3-story house in the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island, New York, that has a door jamb my brother wishes he'd ripped out of the wall before it was sold. On it: our height markers from all of our childhood years. It's probably been painted over or replaced and we kids are now adults living in all corners of the country. But that door jamb is a reminder of where home began, and the feeling we try to get back to despite our never officially saying goodbye to it.

I think about that house often. Nestled in the company of my grandmother's couch dolls and watching a VHS tape on her rabbit-eared television or perched up on a chair playing with my sister's vintage dollhouse in the den. Twenty years ago I was sitting in their kitchen making bologna cigars with my grandfather because he smoked the real ones. Their side yard was a jungle of ivy, the backyard a maze of trees and flowers. I think my brother wished he'd taken that door jamb because when we grow older our memory seems too fragile a thing to hold onto. It's not tangible, not something we can package up and stow away. I'm like him, too, wishing I could rip whole foundations from the earth, wrap my arms around all that sheetrock and wood, like somehow it will transport me back to the memories I had there. But, in reality, it's the people who make the places and all the little treasures we can take with us or find again.

This issue puts me right at home with all the things that I've come to call comfort over the years: mountains, good people, heirlooms, and of course, horses and dogs. I hope these stories capture that homey feeling that we all seek in one way or another.

HOUSING HAS GONE TO THE BIRDS

Many birds have very specific requirements for the location of their homes, and for the dimensions, including the size of the entry ways.

Humans are not the only mammals looking ahead to spring. By late winter, resident birds are scoping out real estate for the upcoming breeding season. Increasing the local housing supply is a great way for you to help birds and spruce up your yard, but only if you know what you’re doing. In fact, putting up the wrong bird house in the wrong place can do more harm than good.

Many birds have very specific requirements for the location of their homes, and for the dimensions, including the size of the entry ways.

“Bluebirds are really picky,” explains Caras Nursery Store Manager Marlise Flynn. “They want an incredibly specific hole size and they want the house to be in a wide open place.

They want it to be on a post in a field so they can see what’s there before they go home.”

Chickadees, wrens, and nuthatches prefer smaller homes than bluebirds but are equally picky about their entry ways, preferring holes that are between 1-1/8” and 1-1/4” in diameter. One reason hole sizes are so important is that if you put out a house with a hole that’s too big, you won’t attract the native birds that need our help. Instead, you’ll invite harmful invasive species such as European Starlings and House Sparrows.

“Starlings are super aggressive birds,” Marlise says. “They’re not native and they’re just very prolific. If a bird makes a nest, a starling will take that nest, kick the eggs out, and claim that nest as theirs.” Marlise recommends taking down bird houses and feeders if you have starlings around but every person’s situation is different. At my own house, starlings began nesting in the ventilation holes under my roof. I was able to buy round plug-in screens to seal these holes and drive the birds away while still keeping my bird houses and feeders in place.

House Sparrows are another invasive species. At my home, they bully and harass nesting chickadees, even though the holes of the chickadee houses are too small for the House Sparrows to use. However, they are a good lesson in the importance of hole diameter. While many bird houses accommodate chickadees, nuthatches, wrens, and House Sparrows, I order houses with 1-1/8” holes specifically for chickadees and nuthatches, and have found that they effectively exclude the sparrows.

“We have lots of bats in Missoula,” Marlise says. “They’re a natural animal in this area, and if you bring them into your yard you help control mosquitoes and bugs.” Bat houses have openings underneath them to allow the mammals to fly in and roost.

Homes begin with foundation and framing, and eventually those two words take on a new figurative meaning when people become families—hanging pictures on the walls, building trust, stacking up memories. We take a perfectly smooth, stained door jamb and mark it up with the heights of our children and we leave our hand prints in the freshly poured concrete, as if to say, we were here, this place was ours.

For Raluca Vandergrift, Owner of iNCEP Design, those treasured traces are what transforms a house into a home.

They are important details to note about how one lives a life. Growing up in Romania, Raluca’s extended family lived under one roof and sometimes proximity can lend certain tools.

“They helped me learn how to fix and build things, like a bed for my Cabbage Patch doll,” said Raluca. Later, when her family moved to Italy, then Greece, Raluca learned how beauty could be built into buildings. “My parents’ friends were artists and architects, so that artistic sensibility was always a part of my world.”

When she was eight years old, Raluca and her family moved to America.

“We arrived in New York City with two suitcases and $200,” she said. Eventually, she landed in Missoula to enroll in UM’s Wildlife Biology Program. While an undergrad, she met her husband, Peter. They both loved Missoula so much that they decided to call it home. After college, Raluca worked a series of software jobs but became bored. When she found the architecture program at MSU-Bozeman, she

saw how her hard science skills could mesh with the artistic sensibility that she inherited from her parents.

After graduating from MSU, Raluca returned to Missoula and began work as an architect. With some sweat equity, she launched her own business.

“I wanted the flexibility to make my family a priority while still working,” said Raluca. “I started with one project, which led to the next. The phone wouldn’t stop ringing.”

Family undoubtedly informs Raluca’s design process.

“I love getting to know the owners [of a home]. When I visit for the first time, I don’t want everything all clean and tidy. I want to see how they really live and work. What are their dreams? What do they want out of life? I want to emulate their personal style,” said Raluca.

Raluca especially enjoys starting with older structures and incorporating modern elements. One of her favorite projects was transforming a steel silo into a comfy getaway.

“It came with unique challenges,” said Raluca. “How do you adapt materials, like sheetrock, to a rounded frame?

Who in the area could pour a circular foundation? But, we were also able to repurpose a cement sink and install in-floor heating. It had that juxtaposition I like so much between the old and the new.”

Whether Raluca is updating a home that was built to last, or designing new spaces to include pieces from the past, family is at the center of her style and expertise. “I love knowing that when the next family moves in, they could get a glimpse of how the previous owners lived. It’s a beautiful project when we can keep the structure and leave the story.”

Exquisite. Like a six-sided snowflake, each nook and cranny is unlike any other in the world. And the experience of being a guest? It’s a blizzard of beauty. “The gasp” is a commonality on the grounds of Triple Creek Ranch, especially when out-of-state or cross-pond guests ask where I’m traveling from, to which my answer is: here. Montanans, whether natives or transplants, are a different breed. Patty the bartender has the pleasure of greeting most guests in the Rooftop Lounge while they’re still in their arrival stupor—eyes scanning the impressive art that’s hung or situated tastefully throughout the Main Lodge, feet shuffling from one art piece to another before bellying up to the bar for another work of art: a seasonal signature cocktail. Other guests join the conversation and, before long, we’re seeing those same faces at dinner and again at breakfast. There’s an undeniable intimacy that exists at Triple Creek Ranch that’s hard to find at other resorts. It’s a closeness that’s, well, very Montanan.

Outside lends a paradise in any season but winter is pristine with its clean, sharp beauty. Every hill and building is draped in a thick blanket of snow and the horses are ready to welcome us aboard. Their careful trudging along the narrow trail is rhythmic and reassuring that this age-old way of traversing the mountainside is, indeed, for everyone, despite age or experience level. This vantage point is unmatched, inimitable, as the leather squeaks with our movements. Grouse, elk, mule deer, and the occasional out-of-hibernation bear are residents of these deeply powered ravines and the hush that falls over such a place is music in itself. The peacefulness of the serene setting of sky-tall Ponderosas brings out a communal calm in us all.

But of course, for a more engine purring-type venture, snowmobiling is an indulgent off-ranch opportunity to get even more immersed in the bounty of the Bitterroot Mountains. Bitterroot Adventures, a tour and rental shop, is swollen with simplistic charm. Mike and David fit each of us with a helmet and anything else we might want—’90s bomber jackets, snow pants, hats, gloves, face masks. The more the merrier, especially when motoring out into the wilderness with wind nipping at our extremities. They ready our sleds and give us the rundown, and just as the cold sets in on our faces and limbs, it’s time to stop for hot dogs over an open flame in a white-out meadow where the snow and sky

are hardly distinguishable from each other. It’s a snowglobe paradise.

Snow biking, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing constitute just a short list of the many outdoor activities that are available during this cold smoke season. But, to tell you the truth, it’s the little in-between, indoor moments where real memories are made. Being shuttled from one excursion to another doesn’t seem romantic or thrilling in the least, and some may even consider it an inconvenience at first glance, but any good Montanan knows that rubbing elbows with a stranger from a different corner of the globe breeds small world connection.

Yet somehow, some way, this mountainside retreat has brought them together and reminded us that connection is the throbbing heart of all experience. Furthermore, at the Main Lodge in the Activities Center, a man cranes his neck over a Stave Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle—talk about an experience. These puzzles are mesmerizing, infuriatingly clever, and challenging works of art that inspire even the most unlikely of friends to work together at fitting another piece. And we learn, about fifteen minutes into the multi-hour puzzle building, that this man seated at the puzzle board is the owner of Triple Creek Ranch.

Together, we shut the place down with vacuums buzzing overhead in the dining room after another delectable five-course meal.

In the evening, after either a day of outdoor play or in-house leisure (I suggest a fair share of both), it’s only right to treat yourself to a steaming shower followed by a glass of wine in front of a crackling fireplace. Unwind, unplug, uncork, in that order. The leather sofa hugs me in all the right places and the surrounding trees fade into a deep, darkened forest beyond the picture windows. The forest’s tranquility feels as absorbent as the complimentary lotions and potions. This cabin feels like home to all the senses.

Once upon a time in a tiny apartment in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Paige Ward dreamed of ridding her home of clutter, specifically plastic. She longed for a space dedicated to zero waste and maximum beauty. Paige scoured antique stores for vintage glass jars to store bulk items, always keeping an eye for products that were and could be recycled or repurposed.

“I looked for an artistic aesthetic,” said Paige.

“Craft, utility, and beauty can apply to the products we use in our homes.”

She replaced plastics as their useful lives ran out, drawing inspiration from Instagram accounts dedicated to simple and sustainable living.

“I had become overwhelmed by the chaos that was our kitchen,” said Paige. “It really was a shift in mentality to have objects made of natural fibers, built with quality of craftsmanship.”

Paige and her partner, Evan Hauser, returned to Missoula where they’d met in art school at the University of Montana. The idea for a retail shop dedicated to her philosophy of sustainability grew out of conversations at the dinner table.

Three Bales Home Supply launched in February of 2021, finding its home on South Higgins in a historical Missoula storefront that once housed Paxson Grocery.

“I had so many of these things in my home.

I want to do the research on the back-end that most people don’t have time for,” said Paige. “I know these objects. I can attest to their quality, that they’ve met my checklist of standards.”

Three Bales is beautiful in its simplicity. The morning sun over Mount Sentinel casts a glow through the front windows, bringing light to Paige’s carefully curated line of home products, ranging from kitchen and cleaning to bed linens and brooms.

With a small space, Paige is thoughtful and methodical about the inventory she brings to Three Bales.

“I love the idea of sitting down to a candle-lit dinner, enjoying quality connection with the people I love. So I bring in the things that I value and love in my own home to the store,” she said.

“Everybody eats and cooks to some capacity, so we offer a lot of kitchen items.”

With her commitment to a minimalist-maximalist mentality, Paige looks for products that serve a lasting, often generational, purpose in the home.

“Our grandmothers mended, saved, and reused items in their homes. I’m interested in consuming things well, so I can consume less,” she said. “Three Bales, in its concept, values that.”

She especially appreciates the opportunity to work with family-owned companies that are committed to quality craftsmanship, noting Smithey Ironware Company based in South Carolina for their cast iron pans that are machine finished on the interior. Paige also carries the work of a porcelain ceramic artist who makes timeless and classical pieces that are beautiful enough for a special occasion, but heavy-duty for everyday use.

“You can have really nice things that if you take care of them, they will last,” said Paige. “You’ll find cast iron cookware in antique stores long past our time.”

While the journey to zero-waste is an admirable one, Paige noted that she doesn’t want customers to immediately scrap everything in their home and buy all new.

“I encourage people to trade out things as they have the resources and as other things wear out,” she said.

“Replacing everything at once and giving it to Goodwill is not sustainable for your finances or for the environment. Three Bales offers objects that you consume when you need them.”

Paige keeps a log of the home goods her customers hunt for, noting that with the changing of the seasons she rotates inventory to suit the needs of the community.

“I really want people to honor their own aesthetic and lifestyle,” she said. “I want to honor the richness of people and the objects in their homes.”

From its beginning, Three Bales has offered an extension of her family home, a value with deep roots for Paige. She hosted several events in 2021 and plans to offer more in 2022, especially ones focused on women’s journeys throughout motherhood and home-keeping.

“I want people to have a peaceful feeling when they come here. I want to share this space as a place where people come together to create moments of connection in a time where we really need it,” she explained. “I adore all of these objects, yes, but what I really love is a slower, more thoughtful, and more intentional way of being present in our world.”
