In this year's April "Explore" themed issue we ran a story written by Ron Russell, an avid hiker, photographer, and retired forest service worker. He hikes with a friend named Crit and he sends out "A Walk in the Woods," a weekly hiking report, complete with pictures, to an email list of friends. I know this because I'm now a recipient of this email, and what I hope to be referred to as a new friend of Ron's. After all, we are in possession of the same very expensive heart-shaped pillow. In late March I went in for heart surgery. And what they say is right: surgery is the easy part, recovery is where you trudge uphill both ways. Ron's article hit Missoula mailboxes just as I was holed up in the hospital learning how to walk again and his email to me, about retrieving several copies of the magazine, went unanswered. On April 10, I emailed him back with my excuse for the silence. He responded the way most do, in disbelief that someone so young would need such a thing. He said he hoped to meet me someday when I felt up to it, and on October 5, I pulled into his driveway for a visit. Of course, the crucial part of our connection is the email I received from him on July 29, completely out of the blue, before the visit. "I just want you to know I will undergo heart surgery as soon as they get it scheduled...I will have to undergo rehab much as you have!" I learned that Ron would have the same surgeon that I did, and I felt a rush of relief fall over me. He was going to be ok, the same way I am. So, one can imagine how we fell into each other's embrace upon meeting. I wrapped his shoulders with warmth and gratitude and just held on, knowing full and well what he went through. I learned lots of stories from Ron and his wife Marilynn that day, and I'll cherish them and the time they spend with me always. You just never know the relationships you'll get to experience in life, and the unexpected joy they'll offer in the wake of hard things. The magic of this season sure makes people like Ron and our surgeon feel like a gift. Merry Christmas and happy holidays from my heart to yours. C H E L S E A LY N A G R O , E D I T O R @MVLMAGAZINE

Parade of Lights

The White Buffalo

Ducrey Chocolate Maker takes the process of chocolate making to a whole new level. They produce authentic two-ingredient organic chocolate using cacao beans and cane sugar sourced exclusively from Central & South America. Only 0.1% of the world's chocolate is made this way. Stop in for a chocolate pick-me-up this holiday season, and remember that they are no longer serving sandwiches, waffles, and small dishes!

This year will continue the new tradition of a stationary parade with parade floats lining Higgins and lighting up downtown. There will be a one-block closure with burn barrels, choirs singing, and a Missoula Makers Collective Winter Market. Enjoy a winter stroll in our charming Missoula!

The White Buffalo is Jake Smith: singer, songwriter, guitarist, teller of stories, and Emmy nominee. He's an artist whose voice sings to greater truths. The latest 11-track is the most collaborative and organic. It's also the first for Snakefarm Records, a young label within the Universal Music Group. Let your ears hear a musical feast on December 9 at 7 p.m. at the Wilma.

SKINNY DIP CANDLE IS PURPOSEFUL AND ENTICES ALL THE SENSES ARTICLE BY SUSIE WALL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA SPAULDING

Imagine the rich scents of molasses, ginger, and nutmeg catching your nose through a lit candle, and then learning that you can spoon out the wax and use it as a lotion. Skinny Dip Candle, owned by Lindsey Keeley, offers this opportunity and many others through her candle experience. And since it’s the holiday season, isn’t that cozy experience a necessity? Skinny Dip Candle was started in Missoula in 2004 by Karen Porter after she discovered a soy wax that burns at a low temperature, making it tolerable—even pleasurable—to our skin. It became Lindsey's company through a little marinading. She was a sophomore at the University of Montana studying journalism when Karen was first looking for someone to take over the business. Lindsey’s father was Karen’s accountant and he brought the idea of taking over the company to Lindsey, knowing she was interested in skincare. She ultimately decided it wasn’t the right time in her life and Skinny Dip Candle went to Patty Hagglund, who retained Lindsey’s father as her accountant, too. When Patty was then looking to retire, Dad—again—brought the idea to Lindsey. It just so happened that Lindsey and her husband, Kevin, were looking to move back to Missoula from Bozeman to be closer to family. Whether it was “father knows best” or good timing, either way, Lindsey was home. “So, I took it over from Patty in August 2020 and now I make candles from my garage,” said Lindsey. She jumped right in, facing the challenges of taking over a business during the height of the COVID pandemic. The first step she took was working with Andrew Houser, an illustrator out of Bozeman, to rebrand, thus creating a new look for the business that features a pinup-style woman on the labels. “But I found over the next year and a half that it wasn’t quite me. I do like to be funny and CONTINUED >

quirky, but the product itself was speaking to customers more as a self-care, affordable luxury item.” She again worked with Andrew and he came up with new label, which Lindsey really likes. “I admit, when I was pregnant with my son I had a freak out moment. Is this really what I want to be doing? Is this me? And that’s when I decided to rebrand the second time because it wasn’t speaking to me. I reformulated my mission to make it feel more true to me and what I wanted to put out in the world,” said Lindsey. Aside from finding the best way to express herself through her business, she also learned some things along the way. “There are a lot of things that go into making a good candle. I just had no idea,” Lindsey said. For instance, glass vessels can explode if the proper wick isn’t used and it’s important that she watches the amount of fragrance she adds to her candles. Lindsey explained that household candles often contain around a 10% fragrance load, which can irritate the skin, so her candles contain 2.5% fragrance to be gentle on the skin. Lindsey makes the candles in a corner of her Missoula garage and she has a pretty efficient factory line set up. She begins by melting soy wax and then mixing it with a variety of soothing ingredients like avocado oil, shea butter, and beeswax. Different fragrances are added depending on the candle to capture the season it’s designed for. Each batch is then poured into four aluminum tins. She sets the wicks and allows the mixture to cool. The wicks are then trimmed and small spoons are added to each tin for easy scooping. Lids and labels are placed and the candles are packed up to ship to individual buyers and wholesalers such as Bitterroot Floral and Missoula Makers Collective. Lindsey sells candles with 35 different scents covering four collections: Basic, Essential Oils, Edible, and Seasonal. She makes single scent candles and she mixes scents together, which lets her creative side flourish. To Lindsey, owning Skinny Dip Candle goes way beyond simply producing a product and turning a profit. One of her most important CONTINUED >

missions with Skinny Dip Candle is that her customers feel welcome, beautiful, and comfortable. She sees the privilege of owning the company as a way to help people and give back to the Missoula community she loves. “I don’t like being hindered to just a product,” said Lindsey. “The product and myself need to have a purpose and a way to help people and make them feel joy in their own skin and who they are, as they are.” Lindsey often donates candles to local organizations for fundraising events. “As a small business, I’m like, ‘Oh geez, can I afford to give it away? But I want to give it away. I think I’d be happy to just give my candles away.” Lindsey laughed. She also makes sure that her materials are good for the planet. The wicks are a mix of cotton and paper which burn free of toxins. Once the candle burns completely down, the aluminum tins can be put in the recycle bin or brought back to Lindsey for reuse. You can also wash them out with soap and water and use them as a container for snacks or spices. Speaking of spices, Lindsey is excited to share her winter collection with Missoula. “I would say the overall vibe of my winter collection is close and cozy. They’re all scents that I hope will bring up happy memories for people,” said Lindsey. She described Mountain Chalet as comparable to, “sitting in a log cabin nestled in snowy mountains while a little fire burns.” And Mulled Cider as “dipping a ladle into a crockpot full to the brim and simmering with red wine, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves.” With Frosted Gingersnap, Candy Cane, and A Breath of Fresh Air on the lineup as well, there is truly something for everyone. Lindsey has so many ideas for the future of Skinny Dip Candle, but while she looks for the time to implement all of them into her busy life as business owner, wife, and mother to an infant son, she will continue making candles that provide both luxury and comfort to her customers and her community. Stop by to see her and her product in person at the Missoula Holiday MADE Fair on December 11 at the Adams Center.

Sometimes a weekend (or week) away after, before, or even during the holidays is much needed. We tend to think of getting away as this big, boxed package that perfectly fits the person it's for, and it usually comes with a hefty price tag, but traveling doesn't need to be pricey or grand by any measure. Montana takes care of that grand part all on its own. Staycations during this season can be charming, adventurous, soothing, or whatever you need them to be! Bean to Bar DUCREY CHOCOLATE MAKER BRINGS A TRUE CHOCOLATE EXPERIENCE TO MISSOULA ARTICLE BY SHELBY HUMPHREYS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA SPAULDING

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

This holiday, if you’re looking for a delightfully distinctive gift, consider craft chocolate from Ducrey Chocolate Maker in Missoula. Owners, Francesco and Claudia Ducrey, have churned their childhood chocolate memories into a superior product using the original chocolate-making process known as bean-to-bar. Both Claudia and Francesco grew up alongside their own rich chocolate traditions. He was born in Turin, Italy's chocolate capital, and Claudia’s palate matured with the high-quality ingredients from Venezuela and the taste of her first chocolate bar in Patagonia. The Ducreys honor their heritage by sourcing organic cacao beans from Central and South America. “As of today, the highest quality cacao is still coming from those areas," said Claudia. However, it’s more than high-quality ingredients that sets their chocolate apart. Claudia is the official “chocolate taster” and appropriately calls their facility The Lab. “It’s more of a Research and Development kitchen,” she said. “Each batch is different and uses single-origin beans.” Developing microbatches ensures they have ultimate control over the quality of their product, without fusing in chemicals and additives commonly found in mass-produced chocolate.

Francesco’s role as chocolate maker allows him to govern the entire process, from the cacao beans he receives in jute bags to the deluxe bars tucked within ornate wrapping. The in-house production includes every step: sorting, roasting, cracking, winnowing, refining, conching, and tempering, which signals that vision we all share of a warm vat filled with a satin swirl of deliciousness. Beanto-bar started in the U.S. in the 1990s. Francesco teases out the best qualities of the beans and other ingredients CONTINUED >

to make a distinctive chocolate, as opposed to chocolatiers who use ready-made chocolate to make specialty products, like pralines and other confections. After vacationing in Missoula for many years, Claudia and Francesco moved here in 2018. Two years later, they opened a cafe on East Front Street for the public to experience a variety of flavors that complement their custom chocolates. “We wanted to offer Missoula a taste of Europe by mixing in some typical dishes," said Claudia. Their menu included an Italian waffle with Parma, arugula, and a drizzle of olive oil, an avocado tartine with bacon, and the JB (aka "Jambon-Beurre"), the go-to sandwich in France. "We wanted to put together some tasty European classics and bring them here to our new home,” said Claudia. Since then, the kitchen has closed and their primary focus is on chocolate. Missoula is fortunate to have craft chocolate makers who take the extra time, love, and effort to translate their childhood confection memories into chocolate bars to share with others (or keep for ourselves!). This holiday, their shop will feature gift packages called Legacy Boxes. “We like to reuse things, so those tin boxes are meant to be kept after having eaten all the contents, to be filled with jewelry, fishing flies, cards, love notes, glasses, or whatever your imagination might think of,” said Claudia.

MOLASSES M EN

Molasses Men were baked and born one wintry day in my kitchen when I discovered that nearly all of the recipes I sought for gingerbread cookies were ironically lacking ginger. Some required small amounts of ginger while others completely omitted it. Molasses was really the star of the show and gave the appearance of that rich, dark color we all recognize to be the tasty and spicy holiday treat. For extra fun, dip them in some melted chocolate and sprinkle some cheer on top!

A RECIPE FOR HOLIDAY CHEER

MOLASSES MEN ingredients:

directions:

Whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cinnamon, baking soda, cloves, salt, and nutmeg. Using your stand or hand mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy in a separate bowl. Add in egg and molasses, mix. Add in flour mixture, stir just until combined. Divide the dough into two equally sized rounds and gently flatten to 1 inch disks and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Roll and cut the dough using your preferred cookie cutter. Take a toothpick and poke facial details for a feel-good touch! Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Wait for 30 minutes if you choose to dip them in chocolate for extra fun and flavor. Enjoy!

3 1/4 c. all purpose flour 1 tbs. cinnamon 3/4 tsp. baking soda 3/4 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/2 tsp. salt 3/4 c. unsalted butter (soft) 1/2 c. brown sugar 1 egg 1/2 c. molasses 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
