Before I had a child, I used to look at parents with bewilderment when their kid would say something to me in a language that only they understood. I was amazed at how skilled moms and dads were at deciphering words and sounds, how they knew exactly what the child meant.

Now, as a parent to a 2-year-old, I understand this whole language thing a bit better. Recently, I held the door open for my son to walk through and after passing in front of me, he turned around, looked up at me and said, "Ank-Oo," which obviously meant "Thank you." Obviously, right? My husband and I looked at each other in awe that our son, who wasn't prompted, had responded to a gesture of kindness with, well, kindness and recognition. This month's Gratitude issue reminds me of this same sentiment.

To have gratitude means recognizing that someone or something gives positive meaning to your life. It requires the ability to understand that, without it, you would be lacking. It entails an overwhelming sensation of thankfulness that we very deliberately acknowledge and vow not to take for granted. This year, I'm thankful for a lot of things, maybe even more than I ever have been before. Health is always at the top of my list, because without it there just isn't any room for much else. Right behind health is family because without them, none of the other stuff really matters that much. You get the idea. Each one makes the next thing possible.

This feeling of gratitude brings us home to our roots. "Even though I don't have X, Y, and Z, I have my health and my family." When we reset our minds to prioritize in this order, we end up making a huge difference in the lives around us, as well as our own. This issue is heavy with givers. They offer healing qualities or exercises, and they share their love wholeheartedly despite their setbacks. I hope that you'll read these pages and find somewhere to place your dollar for donations, and also be inspired by good people doing good things for each other.

May your blessings be bountiful this month and always.

When darkness falls across a vast sky, stars come to light.

They are so bright, so undeniable in their presence, and they burn this way—from our world’s perspective—for eternities. By grand comparison, our staff photographer at Missoula Valley Lifestyle has found her true love in a similar way, knowing in her heart of hearts which light burns the brightest against a dark background.

From her humble beginnings in Circle, Montana where she was born and grew up, Erika has covered a lot of ground. Montana, though, was arguably her first and forever love. Her past relationships are a mixed bag of humans-in-the-making, still on the

path of pursuit when it came to their deeper selves and the desires that exist there. For one reason or another, those past romances fell away as their core values reached the surface. Erika is lovably admired for her ability to call it quits when something isn’t right for her. She has been in the practice of self love, not settling for anything that tried to distort her soul. And sometimes, when you’re not really looking, a shooting star appears.

Enter Tanner Saul—local creator, producer, television host, and wildlife biologist. You may remember him from our June “Men’s Issue.”

With a shared belief that the universe actively provides opportunity, Erika and Tanner were gradually brought closer together over the last year by several episodes of complete randomness. The first, on June 26, 2021: a wedding in which Tanner was the videographer and Erika was the photographer. Flash forward that same summer, it’s August 26 and Erika posts an ISO for huckleberries. Tanner answers with, “I have some!” The only issue was timing. As one was committed to another relationship, the other was single. And then vice versa. It wasn’t until Tanner’s bold admission of love for Erika that the winds would change completely in their favor.

“I haven’t had to change who I am at all,” says Erika. “In the past, I was always trying to fit these molds or these boxes that other people had for me.” And when two animal-loving adventurers unite, that bond grows thick like a forest.

The Proposal “I flew to Oregon and drove down to Bend to ask Tanner’s mom for her blessing,” says Erika. That’s right, she picked out a ring. “Something Tanner and I have always talked about is we don’t need anybody’s approval because this is our relationship and we’ve kept it very intimate that way, but he and his mom are very close…she’s a big adventure lady as well— she’s exactly as I imagine myself to be in the future.”

Sharing some one-on-one time, Erika and Tanner’s mother went paddle boarding so Erika could pop the preliminary question.

“I asked if she wanted to be part of planning something special for Tanner,” says Erika. And much to his mother’s surprise (and delight), Erika learned that Tanner had asked his mom to take Erika ring shopping.

“Hashtag SWL,” chimes in Tanner, with a giddy chuckle.

“Tanner and I always say we’re SWL— same wavelength,” says Erika.

At that moment in time, Tanner knew nothing about this very large coincidence, and Erika had some plans to carry out when they returned to Montana. She was going to make the night they met— August 26—a night to remember for their one-year anniversary.

“I rented this A-frame style cabin—it’s called The Blind—and it’s themed to be a hunting blind overlooking the mountains, and Tanner’s a big hunter so it seemed appropriate,” says Erika. “It opened up to the night sky. The ceiling kind of opens up so that you’re able to see the starry sky, and it was a two-night minimum so I went up the night prior, just me and Oynx (beloved black Labrador). I knew when I was going to propose to Tanner that I was going to lose every thought that I had, so I recorded myself in the middle of the night in this cabin while looking at the stars, CONTINUED >

saying everything I knew I wasn’t going to be able to say.”

She brought with her a star map that illustrated the night sky on the day they met, from TheNightSky.com, and she had a note printed on it that they could look back on in times of trouble. She named a star for the two of them to share, wherever they are, no matter where. “I named it Stella Saul, and Stella means star,” says Erika. Stella can be found via QR code so whether it be a camping trip that extends far into the wilderness (quite common for these two) or right at home here in Missoula, their shining diamond can surely be spotted on a cloudless night.

The dreamy setting and the preparation were set. Erika had an easy part two of this plan: go on an adventure that leads back to this cabin. Normally, this would be the challenging part of a proposal but charcuterie in cups while paddle boarding with dogs and then going to a fancy dinner and then spontaneously retreating to the woods for a night’s sleep is truly part of their day-to-day lives.

“This is something that wasn’t really out of the ordinary for us,” says Tanner. Their joy exists in the moment, not in the precise execution of perfect plans. He admits skipping down the dirt driveway because what could be better than this special spot in the woods? He was about to find out. “She set the camera up in the corner and I remember thinking it was weird because she pressed the button and the light wasn’t blinking for the self-timer.” After a brief scare that she might very well break up with him, she popped the question and they both admit having out-of-body experiences.

Six days later, Tanner’s dad showed up with his mother’s diamond to be fitted into a setting that Erika picked out. The happy couple are entwined in wedding plans for a 2023 wedding.

She’s a fifth-generation Missoula business owner, and that’s only half of what makes her impressive. The other life fact about Maddie is that she was diagnosed this May with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), right after opening up Range Physical Therapy & Wellness in April.

“It’s one of those things where it’s a time-based disease to diagnose,” said Maddie, who speaks rather matter-offactly about her disease, but then also welcomes her emotions when they pop up. In the wise words of a friend, she was encouraged to “feel the feels.”

Maddie woke up one morning being unable to see out of one eye. On Christmas Eve of 2020, Maddie had a brain MRI and was told that she had optic neuritis. And then in the beginning of 2022, Maddie had a relapse occur with symptoms that included numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in her legs and arms, neuropathy, and fatigue, along with another flare of optic neuritis. With the inevitable diagnosis looming in the future for Maddie, she didn’t let the days leading up to it take away her drive for her business, or take the business away from her community. If anything, maybe this diagnosis would strengthen it.

“I’m in a very unique situation now where I get to be the patient and the provider,” said Maddie. “As physical therapists, we are medical providers who can take your whole medical history, your story, and the reason of what you're coming into PT for, and construct an individualized care plan. As a PT, I have a good idea of which questions to ask during my own medical visits, so I've been embracing that to advocate for my patients and making sure that my care toward my patients is equally as full of effort."

The gratitude Maddie feels mainly pivots around this opportunity of being in a good place at a bad time. “I feel

very lucky because with everything going on, they’re such big life events, but at the same time I have the best situation I could have, whether that’s in the business aspect or the MS diagnosis, too,” said Maddie. “I have knowledge, I have support, I have family and friends, I have love.” And she’s right, perspective is everything, which is something she probably has said to her patients as they navigate a body they aren’t familiar with. Learning is best done in a place with unlimited resources and support, and Missoula is a safe place to land after the freefall.

This perspective is possible because of the path paved before Maddie. With a family of business-minded people to rely on and put her trust in, she has a certain pride when she talks about those who have always had her back.

“My family is just awesome. I wouldn’t even have this business opportunity if it wasn’t for my family. They’ve always been the parents who have sacrificed everything for the success of their kids, and that even comes down to helping us through school, supporting us, making sure anything and everything happens with us to make sure we’re set up individually to be independent,” said Maddie. “Especially with my parents being such hard workers and business owners, I kind of knew that at some point I would own my own business. I didn’t think it would happen this soon.”

But timing has a strange way of giving us exactly what we need, when we need it.

Over the summer, Maddie went on a 20-mile hike in Glacier National Park with her boyfriend, Jake Leininger. “I never in my life thought that I’d be 29 years old and nervous for a hike because I wasn’t sure what my body was going to do with that,” said Maddie. There’s a humbling note to what she does for a living that bleeds through to her patients CONTINUED >

“Some of the foundation that Range sits on is just the health and wellness of our community, and giving back to that community that I grew up in.” now, and that can-do attitude slips in, too. “You’ve got to just keep plugging,” she said. With a long list of experiences in the oncology field, Maddie specializes in this type of rehabilitation. But she also treats people just like herself, with MS yes, but her deeper self—the goer.

“I do treat the general orthopedic clientele. What we’re really trying to push for Range is—we call it outdoor recreation rehab. We try to reach out to the outdoor athletes.

The trail runners, the hikers, the bikers, the skiers,” said Maddie. “Some of the foundation that Range sits on is just the health and wellness of our community, and giving back to that community that I grew up in.” Being an active person in the community and also carrying this diagnosis, Maddie admitted to riding the learning curve just like some of her patients, furthering that bond in business that is only born through shared experience. She’s had to recognize and accept her fatigue symptoms as they come, and she’s also learned to stay active amongst the fluctuation of symptoms.

“I finally learned to practice what I preach.”

But back to that 20-mile hike. With a family as supportive as Maddie’s, we have come to expect that Jake would be capable of leading and supporting Maddie as a life partner.

After all, the best relationships are those that are crossstitched with troubled times and triumphant climbs, side by side of course.

“When we showed up to the neurologist, we knew we were pretty much going to talk about the plan of action after reading my report saying that I did have MS. He just goes, ‘Remember, you’re the same person when we walk out,’ and it really stuck with me,” said Maddie. She has taken his kind and truthful words to heart and continues to live bravely, not for a second letting her diagnosis be the definition of who she is.

DJ Two Shoes comes in to record his weekly program “Send Up the Beat” in the Missoula Community Radio studio. An MCAT staff member patiently educates a library patron on how to use editing software. MCAT General Manager, Joel Baird, meets with community members to discuss upcoming media projects. MCAT has been providing the public with free access to a variety of media sources for 30 years, but their new space has allowed them to serve a broader section of the community.

For years, MCAT was located in the basement of the Circle Square building at 500 N. Higgins. They had partnered with the library for several decades, providing services like using their cameras to record meetings that held there. Then, as the library was making plans for their new building several years ago, they invited MCAT to be a part of their integrated space.

“When the library was being built, they were inspired by the concept of culture houses, common in Scandinavia,” said Joel. “A place for the community to gather and explore various interests under one roof.”

Today, MCAT occupies several rooms along the southeast corner of the library on the first floor. Joel says technology is woven throughout this floor with the UM Living Lab and MakerSpace as neighbors. “That’s our trip,” says Joel. “Fun stuff to do with tech, so you can see it’s just naturally very complementary.”

MCAT’s facilities are open and available to the public during library hours. The counter is manned at all times by a helpful staff member. You can make an appointment to meet with the staff, or drop in if they’re not too busy, to get help with media issues and to learn how to use Apple Final Cut Pro 10 or Adobe Premiere on one of the editing stations.

In the spacious light-filled office you’ll find Joel, happy to chat about MCAT’s services. The office is also the hub for the “T” in MCAT. Two televisions are broadcasting programming around the clock like The World Fusion Show and all city and county government meetings on channels 189 and 190 through Charter Spectrum.

Across the hall, the podcast room houses state-of-the-art podcast equipment and four headsets with microphones.

Missoula Community Radio, a full-power community radio station broadcasting over 101.5 FM on KFGN, is also contained within MCAT’s facilities.

“They had operated for six years in the Union Club and I invited them to come over here since we have space and free rent,” says Joel. The anchor of the new digs is the 28x30' studio with a green screen, a special effects video switcher for four cameras, an audio mixer, and computer-controlled lights.

MCAT is also the keeper of the “Library of Things” collection where a library card allows patrons to check out a staggering array of media devices like camcorders, SLR cameras, telescopes, iPads, phone chargers, and even birdwatching kits and bike locks.

Accessibility is the greatest perk of this educational resource, and it’s free and available to all. Visit MCAT.org to book the studio or podcast room, borrow equipment, and request help from the staff to record, archive, and distribute a non-commercial program to run on their cable channels. They also offer numerous weekly workshops like an introduction to video editing, podcasting, and screenwriting, as well as a general tour and training on the MCAT media tools.

Joel has been with MCAT since 1989 and his passion for the role that the organization plays in the Missoula community is evident.

He is excited about the collaborations between the library and all of its in-house partners, and he is especially eager to talk about two new programs that brings kids into the library and gets them excited about the library and all it has to offer.

“The Second Saturday Kids Passport Program” is held on the second Saturday of each month. Kids can participate in activities hosted by the five “All Under One Roof” library partners, which

explore the theme of Montana’s DNA. At each stop, kids will get their passport stamped and a full passport wins a prize. Activities include hands-on stop animation with dinosaurs at MCAT, indigenous art and stories at UM Living Lab, and lessons about local plants at spectrUM. Every Saturday at 11 a.m., MCAT also hosts a dance party for kids. Parents, caregivers, and children can gather together in the studio and boogie down to kid-friendly dance music under a spinning mirror ball.

The Missoula Public Library was recently awarded the worldwide honor of “Public Library of the Year” at the World Library and Information Congress in Dublin, Ireland over the summer.

This award "recognizes creative integration of innovative technology and open, sustainable architecture with reflections of local culture and landscape." It’s safe to say that MPL is a new, updated resource hub for educational (and fun!) experiences that appeal to adults and children alike. See you there.
