A kid at heart.

M

y bedtime is early—as in, the same time as my toddler-age nephews, 8 p.m.—and it always has been, even as a teenager and young(er) adult. I suspect this is the reason why I’ve always felt uncool.

But when I am listening to the latest albums by the Whizpops and the Salamanders, I feel very cool. These two bands were an obvious choice to feature in our Back to School issue.

The Salamanders’ Cowboy Andy brought Missoula’s kindie (kiddie + indie) rock scene to my attention. This genre, as described

by Wikipedia, is children’s music that “melds the sensibility of the singer-songwriter with themes aimed at kids under 10.” I would add: "and appreciated by adults who are kids at heart, and even having the added benefit of making these adults cool."

The Whizpops’ Ranger Rick’s Trail Mix Vol. 1 and Bubbles by the Salamanders have been the soundtracks to my summer, and their fun, upbeat, positive, educational lyrics remind me how important being a kid is—regardless of actual age.

J.M. Barrie, writing in “Peter Pan,” literature’s most famous forever child, writes, “I suppose it's like the ticking crocodile, isn't it? Time is chasing after all of us.” But just because time chases us doesn’t mean we have to let it catch us. Walt Disney said it best:

CYCLING IN THE EXPANDED FIELD: A TOUR OF FORMER LAND ART SITES Many of us would agree that the best way to explore the world is on two wheels, so there's not much that could be better than exploring noted land art sites on your bike. Join Whitney Ford-Terry, a tours specialist for Adventure Cycling, for a peripatetic conversation and one-day bicycle tour on Sunday, August 13 to the site of former land art installations in and around Missoula. The trip begins at 10 a.m. at the Missoula Art Park and is approximately 30 miles one-way. Cyclists are responsible for their own gear, food, and water. Participants may arrange for a return pick-up. hen I first step into the Sentinel floorplan at Valley View Terrace, I’m struck by how much more spacious it feels inside than it looked outside.

The hallways are wide, the ceilings

are tall, and I can see straight to the back of the house where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the view of the mountains bounding the valley to the east, including, of course, Mount Sentinel. I move through the home quickly, noting the wood floors, the granite countertops, and the covered patio outside, but what sticks with me most is the ease of moving around the home, the unbounded feel about it. As I sit down at the dining room table and talk with Gene Mostad, founder and president of Mostad Construction, I realize that the open feel I get from walking around the house is all part of a carefully thought-out design.

“Once people get in these homes, they start to realize why they’re designed the way they are,” Mostad explained. “It’s step-free, barrier-free living. It feels better.”

I look around: There aren’t any steps, the shower is curb-less, the electrical box and water heater are in the garage instead of the crawl space. The floor plan is small enough that you wouldn’t forget to clean the cobwebs out of one corner, yet it is spacious and very easy to move around in. It’s all the result of a lifetime of designing, refining, and re-designing what the home can look and feel like.

For this reason, he has designed a professionally managed, comprehensive homeowners association that takes care of all the maintenance-related responsibilities. It’s a home that you can easily lock and leave.

Of course, over 40 years, Gene has endured struggles. Land prices have gone up, codes have became more stringent, building permits have became harder to get, and the economy has crashed. But it all can be put in perspective: “We may think things are hard to do here until we hear from others [around the country]. Sometimes we get stuck in a bubble and upset about small things. But we live in a pretty terrific place that allows us to get out and enjoy nature. We are lucky to be a part of this community.”

To constantly make improvements, Gene has become part of the Builder 20 Club of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). With the Builder 20 Club, he meets twice a year with homebuilders from around the country to exchange ideas on how to improve product and performance. His involvement in the Club has been “instrumental” in Mostad Construction’s growth, allowing them to become the leader in the Missoula residential housing and custom home markets.

And even though he is celebrating 40 years in construction, Gene doesn’t seem like he’s stopping anytime soon. His next focus is on improving the living comfort of the house by constantly cycling indoor and outdoor air to create better indoor air quality. At each step, he’s working to refine the experience of the home for the homeowner to make it feel like a home you can grow old with.

A FAMILY BUSINESS In the last few years, Gene Mostad’s two sons, Lance and Loren, have entered the business after pursuing their own degrees and careers. They’ve each fit their own strengths into different aspects of the business: Lance is a project manager, and Loren is in sales and marketing.

With his wife, Nancy, working in accounting on and off over the years, Gene recognizes that this kind of family business is a rarity, especially today. He also knows that for a family business to be successful, everyone must be willing to put in hard work, which is why he is pleased to see his sons’ level of commitment: “They know it’s not going to be an easy ride, but they’re ready for the challenge.”

“Our community is very giving,” Alison explained. “I wanted them to learn why charitable organizations need to exist in our towns, and in towns around the world, because without donations they cannot run.

They love knowing that they are helping out in some way.”

Because of the success of the program, Alison and her students have been working to keep their store running throughout the summer and are hoping schools around the country will adapt the concept for their communities.

“I know there are so many other schools and people that can benefit from this,” she said. “For a lot of kids, it’s hard to learn without being hands-on, and with this program they’re learning traditional school subjects by selling on eBay and they don’t even realize it. They’re putting what they learn into real life.”

KinDie Isn't Just for Kids THE SALAMANDERS ELEVATE CHILDREN'S MUSIC WITH THEIR RANGE AND MUSICIANSHIP

hey might say it’s music just for kids. I thought it was.

Several months back, and still new to the Zoo, my girlfriend and I were browsing the events section of

the Missoula Independent in search of something to do or listen to. Listed was a CD release party at Rockin’ Rudy’s for the Salamanders’ latest album Bubbles. “Excellent,” I thought, until I saw it billed as “family friendly.” I immediately lost interest.

The Salamanders play what’s known as kindie rock, and it’s finding its way into more and more minivan stereos traveling along I-90.

According to the band’s lead singer/songwriter Andrew Hunt (aka Cowboy Andy), this genre is “independent music for families and kids.” And it loves Missoula as much as we do. Kindie rock sprouted nationally about 10 years ago and spread from Seattle to Boston.

The genre gained ground across the U.S. before planting its roots in Missoula with bands like the Salamanders and the Whizpops.

Was I ever wrong! Bubbles is a thoughtful, endearing album covering themes of love and inclusion while profiling such topics like Pirate Santa and Matt Damon (yes, we’ll get to it later). But what really set it apart from the traditional kids’ music genre is the quality of their musicianship.

In one form or another, the Salamanders have been performing for nearly nine years. Cowboy Andy began by playing a mix of kids and adult music at various retail shops before meeting up with Matthew Nord, the owner of Tangled Tones Music Studio.

“Matthew has been doing interactive kids music for a long time,” Andy said, “and he and I connected one day at Kids’ Vibration, a monthly kids’ dance he did, and we clicked musically.”

ven though our son was fast asleep in the backseat, my husband and I kept the music blaring as our truck sped along the Blackfoot River. It was supposed to be a kids album. But the infectious beat had me tapping my foot, and we couldn’t help singing along with the chorus: “Extinction really stinks...forever.”

Turns out that the Whizpops’ fourth album, Ranger Rick’s Trail Mix Vol. 1, is for big kids, too. It’s fun, catchy, and upbeat—not usually words used to describe media about endangered animals. I liked “Gulo Gulo (Wolverine)” best, a jazzy rap about the dwindling carnivore’s scavenging habits, while my husband’s favorite was a reggae ditty called “Monarch” about the butterfly’s life cycle.

When I told the Whizpops drummer, Daniel Kiely, which song was my favorite, he said, “Did you know that Gulo gulo is the wolverine’s

Each of the eleven tracks invokes its namesake animal with a different musical genre. “Pika” is as upbeat as the chirpy mountain rodents; the flowing piano and string solos in “Stream that I Call Home” conjure the feel of a river where bull trout live.

Impressed by the band’s ability to mesh diverse musical talent and complex science messages, I asked the Whizpops co-founder, Casey Schaefer, how the album originated.

“We write material that doesn’t drive mom and dad insane,” said Daniel. “Partly, that’s because we’re combining art and education.”
