Happy New Year!

T

he water shot out from a pipe in the wall. I stood out of its way, staring at the downward arc it made over the porcelain tub. I reached my hand out. Yep, the water was cold. Not cool.

Cold, icy, frigid, freezing. It was chilly outside, too, probably in the mid-40s. Simply put, taking a cold shower in a cold place was not cool. But I needed a shower, so I very briefly inserted my head into the single-stream waterfall, wetting my hair in order to lather in my shampoo. When it came time to rinse it out, I wished I’d had the forethought to buy a 2-in-1 shampoo. I got brain freeze. The water was cold enough to give me brain freeze!

I continued to rinse out the shampoo and conditioner and wash off the body soap and face wash, mentally holding on to something a friend had told me earlier that day: “You won’t be cold once you get out because your outside temperature would be equal to or cooler than the air temperature.” He said I’d probably even feel warm.

Can you believe I fell for that?

He was right. I can’t comment on the science, though. But I didn’t feel cold, or cool.

Dare I say that it was a bit balmy in that bathroom? I felt refreshed, rejuvenated—eager even for my next cold shower. Well, not that eager, especially this time of year when our temperatures hover over freezing.

What I am super eager about is 2017 and all the possibilities it has in store. A friend from church recently told me that he had a vision of me sitting on a couch watching a softball game through large glass doors. He said, "It's time to join the game." Or step under the stream of icy water because everything will be okay. Better than okay. Balmy.

A SHOW FIT FOR THREE The first of eight shows at Radius Gallery in 2017 kicks off at the end of this month with a show for artists Hadley Ferguson, David Hiltner, and Bobbie McKibbin. You may not even realize that you’re already familiar with their work, so this is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with it. The intersection of Broadway and Higgins features large murals of historic Missoula by Hadley, who was also commissioned to paint a historic homage to Montana women in the Capitol building in Helena. David, a ceramic artist, is the executive director of the Red Lodge Clay Center, which provides a place for artists to create new (ceramicminded) work. The Smithsonian American Art Museum has acquired work by Bobbie, a pastel artist based in Stevensville. These are three artists’ work you won’t want to miss. A LEGACY LIVES ON Elouise Cobell, the namesake of UM’s Elouise Cobell Land and Culture Institute located at the Payne Family Native American Center, was named one of 21 recipients of the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor that is presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Cobell was a Blackfeet Tribal community leader and an advocate for Native American self-determination and financial independence. MEET THE BIRDS THAT DON'T FLY SOUTH FOR THE WINTER

hen we hear the term “snowbirds,” many of us think of the people who escape the cold and overcast skies by heading south for a spell. Birdwatchers, however, think of the small

but hearty group of actual birds that stick out the winter here in Western Montana. Birding is a

great way to spend the winter months. It requires no formal training and provides a great excuse to get outside when the dreary weather doldrums begin to take hold. Winter’s white backdrop and bare tree branches also make it easier to spot the birds. Here is a list of five birds to keep your eyes peeled for this winter and hints on the best locations to start your search.

Hooded Merganser

Your confidence as a birder will rise like the crest of the Hooded Merganser once you learn to identify this small distinctive duck. Like many breeds of birds the male and female look nothing alike, but the female Hooded Merganser does not take a backseat to the male when it comes to flair and their characteristic crest of feathers. The crest on the male is mostly white and looks like a stripe when lowered and a three-quarter moon when raised. The female’s crest is cinnamon and feathery, sweeping back with a flourish from her forehead. Many ducks migrate south but Hooded Mergansers brave the cold providing us with a colorful sight on a bleak winter day. Look for them in wooded ponds and on small rivers at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge in Stevensville and the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge, located in Charlo.

Northern Harrier

Large, sleek, and seemingly always

on the hunt, the Northern Harrier is the quintessential raptor. Voles are their main diet, and they are often seen gliding low to the ground, hunting in open grasslands and meadows. At first glance, they look like most hawks but the best clue to spotting one is the distinctive white rump patch, present on both males and females. The male is pale gray with black wing tips whereas females are larger and dark brown. A facial disk gives them an owl-like appearance and they even hunt similarly to owls—with sound—and are the only hawk to do so. Spot them gliding over fields along Mullan Road and at the National Bison Range.

Great Honred Owl

Dusk sets in as you finish a snowshoeing adventure in Pattee Canyon. Suddenly, the quiet is pierced by a chilling hoo, hoo-hoo hoo, hoo; you sense something large overhead but see nothing. One of the world’s largest owls just swept in to say, “Hello.” Great Horned Owls stay in Missoula all year and are one of the easiest birds to identify, thanks to their namesake “horns”—tufts of feathers. These great owls also have dense bars of feathers on their undersides and brown facial disks with piercing yellow eyes. Despite their nocturnal ways, they give us plenty of chances to see them, especially during dawn or dusk, roosting in trees at river bottoms and in pine forests.

To help locate a roost, look on the ground below a ponderosa pine for the oval gray pellets regurgitated by owls after a meal.

Find a pellet below and look up; one may be looking down at you. Greenough Park is a good place to start.

As I heave myself upward and onward through the snow-covered trail before me, my breath does the same against my ribs, sending small clouds of warmth out into the biting air. My chocolate Labrador runs effortlessly ahead of me, chasing a scent over heaps of downed trees, mazing over and under them on a path that’ll lead to nowhere in particular.

Surrounding us are gray and black wiry spindles stretching high to the heavens—evidence of another city of trees, lost forever.

It’s an eerie place, this burn area. Its footing is loose and charred beneath the recent snowfall; the tall trunks are brittle and some, hollowed. There’s something enchanting about a lush forest, one so dense that it seems to always be night, but that mystery has been stripped from this place. It is vast, yet populated by these tall splinters in our earth, torched and exposed by a fiery fury.

I keep tracking farther and then pause to notice my Lab’s snout buried deep into the spidery shoots of bear grass that have yet to be dressed completely in snow. That pop of green reminds me that this place won’t always be a barren canvas. It will flourish like it once did, with wildflowers and wildlife. Treads and soles of adventurers like me will witness its rebirth from the ground up. It’s then that I think, No, this place isn’t lost forever.

Like a brand to its hide, the Bitterroot National Forest endured the singeing and smoke of two major forest fires during the summer of 2016. Combined, the Roaring Lion and the Observation fires stole more than 10,000 acres, forcing our wildlife to find refuge elsewhere, and our southern Bitterroot communities to migrate to friends and family away from the raging blaze. However, despite the devastation, there is hope for renewal.

Ecologists and fire behavior experts alike say that forest fires are a natural part of our ecosystem. Mother Nature begins her healing whether the fires were man-induced or of her own accord.

The downed trees that my Lab is rocketing over are home to birds and small animals. The short knobs where branches grew from their bases have become perches and feeding platforms for these new settlers. All forests, even those that are healthy, are home to decaying plant matter and dead trees. When a roaring blaze blows through and turns them to ashes, nutrients are returned to the soil and later slowly fuel the birth of new plants.

This process of regrowth is referred to as natural succession, where vegetation begins to populate the abandoned forest floor and, in turn, welcomes new lifeforms. Ecologists have seen rapid regrowth and even saplings sprouting up within a decade of a low- to medium-severity fire that burned earlier in a summer season.

Montana, unfortunately, experiences her fires late in the summer season when the moisture has depleted, leaving our forest in its most vulnerable state for high-severity fires. It may take multiple decades before we see— from the car window on our morning commute or on an afternoon hike with friends—a noticeable change in these blackened areas.

Its beginning may be a far-off flame, perhaps a century away from today, but the day will come when life rises up through the ashes.

t’s all in the name: Mountain Cat. Light on its feet and aggressive in its maneuverability, the 2017 Mountain Cat sports a durable body and houses a two-stroke ticker that’ll climb the shred without hesitation. It would win best in show for agility, and maybe even for looks alone.

Arctic Cat broke the mold when they made the 2017 Mountain Cat. It has everything that you wished your older models had and cuts back in all the right places. Starting with the most significant, the M 8000 doesn’t have an electric start, making it about 30-40 pounds lighter overall. It’s equipped with the Arctic Drive System, which features a lightweight magnesium chain case. The new TEAM Rapid Response II drive clutch features an auto-adjusting belt tension design that promises to deliver consistent performance without manual adjustments. Put it like this, this is low-maintenance, easy-tuning. Plus, reduced slippage keeps clutch temperatures low and your track power high.

Another notable is the driveshaft that was lowered by 1.125 inches for increased clearance of the three-inch lug track while enabling the use of eight-tooth drive sprockets. Yes, eight-tooth, not seven as compared to the previous design. The results are a flatter track-to-snow approach angle, which is like harnessing the power of floating. It also makes for quicker climbing over snow while accelerating and improved overall handling.

A more finite but important feature is the revised running boards.

They’re narrower by about one inch, playing a huge role when it comes to side-hill performance and laying the sled over deep snow. Also exercising its new potential is the revised belly pan shape. It allows your feet to move two inches farther forward for even greater comfort and control.

You’d have to go looking for something that doesn’t strike your fancy with this ride. It’s the same deal that we’re used to, only it’s the sharper, spunkier cousin. Its double-edged sword is going to be its weight, or lack thereof. Because of the thinner gauge aluminum on the rear tunnel section work, in combination with new cut-outs on the front tunnel, the overall reduced weight is significant from that of its earlier versions. It’s an impulsive and reactive ride for experienced riders but could have a few too many tricks for the less experienced mountaingoer.
