LIFESTYLE LETTER
Finding Joy in a Little Bit of Style Can we breathe again? Wooohooo… what a hot summer! We hope you had a great one, but now it’s time for back to school, cooler weather, and a refresh for fall. September is our Style issue. I don’t know about you, but my style has fallen by the way side the past few years. Part Covid, part laziness, and just a habit of wanting to be comfortable and make things easy. For clothing, that usually means wearing a lot of black. But, I have made it a mission this fall to do some personal style editing in my life and clear the slate. Since style can be integrated into a lot of things, it’s a fun and artistic way to express. Whether it’s your personal clothing style, your home, or a way you like to go about accomplishing something in your life, style is a unique imprint of you. 301 Kenwood is an iconic part of the Minneapolis Lakes neighborhood. Nestled next to the Walker Art Center and the Sculpture Garden, it has been a beacon of beautiful architecture for years. Ellyn Wolfenson and Matt Baker share a special story about one of its latest opportunities. If you are wanting to change up your home, we talked to Dan Lerach, owner of Moore Flooring, about what types of products he carries and how their team can help with all of your potential flooring needs. From Mohawk to Godfrey Hirst, you can transform your space to fit the look you want. Everyone loves a little sparkle in their lives, and New Gild shares their strengths in the local jewelry business, plus showcases some of their unique and one-of-akind pieces. Jen, Kelsey, and the entire New Gild team take pride in their work, and the community they have built in Linden Hills. Style often incorporates fashion, and our very own Sarah Knieff talks about the up and coming trends for fall including color, handbags, outerwear & gearing up to look amazing for the rest of 2026. If you can squeeze in a fun trip now that summer is over, we have a great destination in Coronado Bay, California. This family friendly resort might be the perfect recharge for MEA weekend or a much needed fall get away. Lastly, we love the Apple Sangria recipe we’ve included. Perfect for that seasonal temperature change. Whether you’re keeping it simple or changing things up this September, we hope you do it in style! Susan: There isn’t one ‘best’ financial advisor—there’s only the
one that’s the best fit for you. And that fit has everything to do with style. Start by asking yourself what you’re really looking for. Do you simply want someone to manage your investments, or are you looking for a trusted partner who can help with retirement planning, taxes, estate planning, charitable giving, and other important financial decisions throughout your life? Beyond the services, consider the advisor’s approach. The right advisor doesn’t impose a style—they adapt to yours. They take time to understand your specific complexity and build a plan that reflects who you are. After working as a flooring installer for 25 years, Dan Lerach had the chance to buy a long-standing, successful business in his hometown of Fridley. “I took over Big Bob's in 2025 and changed the name,” he says. “Moore Flooring is a play on words because we're on East Moore Lake Drive on Moore Lake. It keeps us connected to the community.” Dan had been an installer for Big Bob’s, which had been in business since 2001, in the past and always appreciated how it operated. So, while he changed the name, modernized the logo, and made it feel homier by adding a couple of plants and changing the overall layout, it was important to him to keep that small-business, local-store feel. The main salesperson from Bob’s has stayed on and greets everyone at the door, so long-time customers see a familiar face. Dan also knows many of his customers from his installation days. “I've personally worked with every crew we use, and they’re all experienced. I still go out to job sites too.” His sons, Jonathan and Nathan, occasionally help in the store as well. Having been an installer, he understands what it takes to keep customers happy. “I didn’t come at this with a salesperson or a business owner type of mentality. Instead, I came at it from the service side because that's what I always did. Rather than just try to sell something, I ask people what they’re looking for and what they need.” For many homeowners, deciding on a product that will not only look great but also work best in their space can be overwhelming. “If you don't know anything about flooring, and you’re trusting the people you're asking, you want to make sure those people are knowledgeable,” says Dan. For example, most people have heard of Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring, but there are many different
subsections of that product. “You need people who can explain the differences between a floor that costs $4 a square foot versus one that costs $6 a square foot. This is where a small, more personal store such as ours is going to beat a big box store every time.” While LVP and other hard-surface flooring are very popular, wall-to-wall carpeting is also still in demand. “There's something to be said about getting out of bed in bare feet in the morning and putting them on something soft and comfy,” he says. “You hear about all these trends, but carpet's always been a thing. It’s never really gone out of style.” In some homes, especially if the subflooring has imperfections, carpet and padding are the way to go. “If you want to make over the look of a room and you want the best bang for your buck, carpet is going to be the quickest and easiest solution.” Since everyone has different budgets, Moore Flooring carries affordable entry-level products all the way up to high-end products found in luxury homes. “Even our entry level is still a good quality Mohawk product,” says Dan. “We won’t sell a plank for a couple bucks because it's just thin plastic that won’t last.” Many of these cheaper products' claims are also very misleading when they boast, "Easy installation that can even go over your existing floor." “These are floors that even a professional with two and a half decades of experience can have trouble clicking together. We stay away from those products because we install everything we sell too, and I don't want to set up the installers for failure. Because, at the end of the day, I can have a pretty logo and a pretty store, but if the finished floor doesn’t look good or hold up, then it is a bad installation experience, and that’s what people remember.”
“If you don’t know anything about flooring, and you’re trusting the people you’re asking, you want to make sure those people are knowledgeable.”

When it comes to carpet, hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl and tile, Moore only offers top brands that include Mohawk, Engineered Floors®, Stanton and Mannington®. He trusts these manufacturers to stand behind their products if there’s ever an issue. “I would install anything I carry in my own home.” They also offer carpet binding and serging services, such as making custom rugs and stair runners. Dan, who lives with his sons only one mile from the store, runs into his customers all the time. So, he must ensure the products and services he provides are high quality. Many of his customers are happy to be able to continue shopping for their flooring needs in the same location. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” he says. WHERE E VERY PIECE
tells a story New Gild Jewelers transforms meaningful moments into timeless custom designs crafted with intention, artistr y, and heart
ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE

LOCA L’S CH OICE | SHO PPIN G
For Jenifer Bellefleur Vogelmeier, jewelry has never been simply about gold, diamonds or gemstones. It is about the stories people carry with them—the memories they want to preserve, the milestones they want to celebrate and the loved ones they never want to forget. That belief is the foundation of New Gild Jewelers, where custom design is less about selecting a piece and more about creating something deeply personal. Whether designing an engagement ring, reimagining a family heirloom or restoring a treasured piece, Bellefleur, her co-owner Kelsey, and their team begin every project with one important step: listening. By understanding each client’s story, inspiration and vision, New Gild creates jewelry that reflects the moments and relationships that matter most. “At New Gild, jewelry is more than something you wear—it’s a tangible expression of love, memory, celebration and identity,” Bellefleur says. “Every piece is created with intention. Our team believes jewelry should reflect the moments and people who shape us, and we craft meaningful pieces that link the past and the future.” That philosophy sets New Gild apart from a traditional jewelry experience. Rather than choosing from a collection of mass-produced designs, clients become part of the creative process. Through conversations, sketches and thoughtful collaboration, ideas evolve into one-of-a-kind pieces that feel unmistakably their own. “Every custom piece begins with a story,” Bellefleur says. “The process starts by getting to know you—your inspiration, your memories, your milestones and what you hope your jewelry will represent.” Throughout the design process, clients help refine every detail, from the overall style to the smallest finishing touches. Many projects also incorporate existing gemstones or precious metals from older jewelry, allowing meaningful materials to continue their journey in a new form. “By the time your custom piece is finished, it has become more than jewelry,” Bellefleur says. “It is deeply personal and represents our collaboration with you.” Beyond custom design, New Gild’s gallery showcases finished pieces that highlight the artistry and craftsmanship of the team. Each creation offers a glimpse into the possibilities of what jewelry can become when imagination and intention come together.

“The gallery is our collection of possibilities,” Bellefleur says. “Every piece reflects the artistry, imagination and artisanship of the New Gild team, and these pieces are an invitation to dream.” Many designs begin with extraordinary gemstones that inspire the creative process. The team often builds original settings around unique stones, allowing each gem’s natural beauty and character to guide the final piece. “Those pieces ultimately meet someone who shares that aesthetic,” Bellefleur says, “and they go home—with love.” For many clients, the most meaningful projects begin with jewelry they already own. Inherited rings, necklaces and bracelets often hold generations of memories, but they may no longer fit someone’s style or lifestyle. Instead of allowing those treasures to remain tucked away, New Gild helps transform them into pieces that can be enjoyed every day. “Inherited jewelry often holds far more than gold and gemstones—it carries the fingerprints of generations, the memory of celebrations and the quiet presence of loved ones who came before us,” Bellefleur says. The goal is not to erase that history but to honor it while creating something new. By redesigning older pieces, New Gild allows clients to stay connected to the past while creating jewelry that feels authentic to who they are today.
22
LOCA L’S CH OICE | SHO PPIN G
“If those pieces don’t reflect your personal style today, we can thoughtfully transform them into designs you’ll wear and cherish now, allowing family history to live on in a way that feels authentic and personal to you,” Bellefleur says. “It’s a journey of narrative from the past to you, and someday, to someone who loves and remembers you, too.” That same approach applies to jewelry that has simply fallen out of step with someone’s current taste. Rather than leaving forgotten pieces hidden in a drawer, New Gild sees an opportunity to bring them back to life. “Sometimes jewelry just isn’t pretty or functional to us anymore,” Bellefleur says. “Rather than leaving those pieces hiding in a drawer, New Gild can reimagine them into something that feels alive again and suits who you are now.” Inspiration for a custom piece can come from nearly anywhere—a photograph, a sketch, a family treasure or even a feeling someone hopes to capture. Bellefleur encourages clients to bring whatever sparks their imagination. While diamonds remain a timeless choice, Bellefleur also enjoys introducing clients to the many possibilities of colored gemstones. Sapphires, emeralds, rubies and aquamarines each offer their own unique beauty and history. “There are so many gemstones in the world, and we love talking about them with our clients,” she says. “We help our clients select a gemstone that tells the story that’s in their heart.” That storytelling becomes especially meaningful when creating engagement rings and wedding bands. Bellefleur believes every couple’s relationship is unique, and their rings should reflect that individuality. “Our couples don’t have cookie-cutter love stories, so why should their rings be big box?” she says. “Spoiler: they shouldn’t.” For New Gild, jewelry is ultimately about celebrating connection. “Well designed commitment jewelry celebrates the individual, the union and the sacredness of love itself,” Bellefleur says. “Designing, crafting and giving these pieces are gestures that honor what has been made sacred by time and love.”
After years of helping clients mark life’s most meaningful moments, Bellefleur believes the true purpose of New Gild goes beyond creating beautiful objects. “Walking into New Gild feels like more than entering a jewelry store; it feels like stepping into a creative space,” she says. “Here, every conversation begins with individuality.” And while the team may appear to be making jewelry, Bellefleur believes they are creating something much deeper. “Our principal occupation is love.” 4300 Upton Ave. S | 612-402-0561 | newgild.com

[ the season of sophisticated style ] 26
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
FALL 2026 BLENDS LUXURIOUS FABRICS, ELEVATED BASICS AND MODERN SILHOUETTES INTO A WARDROBE DESIGNED TO LAST WELL BEYOND THE SEASON
As crisp air returns and leaves begin their annual transformation, wardrobes are changing, too. Fall 2026 proves that fashion does not have to shout to make a statement. Instead, the season is defined by thoughtful details, quality craftsmanship and versatile pieces that feel as good as they look. It is a season built around investment dressing—clothing and accessories that layer beautifully and move easily from weekday meetings to weekend brunches. The biggest shift this autumn is a renewed appreciation for quality over quantity. Shoppers are gravitating toward timeless silhouettes with contemporary updates rather than chasing trends that disappear within months. The result is a wardrobe filled with pieces that feel current now but will remain relevant for years. Color tells the story first. While black remains a fall essential, 2026 welcomes an earthy, sophisticated palette inspired by nature. Rich espresso brown has emerged as the season’s defining neutral, appearing in everything from leather jackets to tailored trousers. Deep olive, warm cinnamon, burgundy, plum and charcoal offer endless layering possibilities, while creamy oatmeal and soft ivory brighten outfits without losing seasonal warmth.
Unexpected accents of cobalt blue, forest green and mustard add personality. Rather than dressing head to toe in one shade, the season encourages mixing complementary colors to create depth and visual interest. Texture is equally important. Suede continues its comeback, appearing on jackets, skirts, handbags and footwear. Velvet returns for evening occasions, while brushed wool, chunky knits and supple leather dominate daytime dressing. The emphasis is on fabrics that invite touch and add dimension without relying on loud prints or heavy embellishment. Outerwear, as always, becomes the hero of the season. Long tailored coats remain essential, especially in camel, chocolate brown and charcoal. Oversized yet structured wool coats strike the right balance between comfort and refinement, while cropped barn jackets and quilted field coats offer a relaxed alternative. Leather trenches and belted suede jackets provide an elevated option for those looking to make a subtle statement. Even denim jackets receive an update, arriving in darker washes with cleaner lines and minimal detailing. Layered over lightweight turtlenecks or cashmere sweaters, they offer an easy solution for shifting temperatures. Tailoring also takes on a softer approach. Instead of rigid suiting, designers are embracing relaxed silhouettes with fluid movement. Wideleg trousers continue their reign, paired with fitted knits or oversized blazers that create proportion without feeling overly formal. Pleated trousers, once reserved for the office, now appear alongside sneakers, loafers and ankle boots for everyday wear. Matching sets remain popular, but they feel less corporate and more approachable. Coordinated knits, monochromatic separates and relaxed suiting make getting dressed simpler while maintaining an effortlessly polished appearance. Denim is undergoing its own quiet evolution. High-rise silhouettes remain strong, although cuts are becoming more varied. Relaxed straightleg jeans, full-length wide legs and subtle bootcut styles are replacing ultra-baggy fits. Dark indigo, black denim and rich chocolate tones feel especially fresh for fall, often paired with crisp white shirts or luxurious knitwear. CONTINUED >

Sweaters are bigger, softer and more versatile than ever. Cashmere crewnecks, oversized cableknit pullovers and lightweight merino turtlenecks serve as foundational wardrobe pieces. Cardigans are moving beyond basic layering and are often styled as standalone tops with tailored trousers or midi skirts. The focus remains on quality fibers and timeless construction rather than novelty details. Dresses also embrace practicality without sacrificing style. Long-sleeve midi dresses in jersey, knit and lightweight wool offer easy sophistication for work and weekends. Slip dresses continue into cooler months when layered beneath oversized cardigans or structured blazers, proving that summer favorites do not need to be packed away just yet. Footwear follows the season’s practical luxury theme. Knee-high boots remain a standout, especially in rich leather or suede. Sleek riding boots pair beautifully with dresses and skirts, while block-heeled styles complement wide-leg trousers. Loafers continue their popularity with thicker soles and refined hardware, and fashion sneakers remain everyday essentials. Pointed-toe flats also make a notable return, offering an elegant alternative to heels without sacrificing comfort. Accessories are understated but intentional. Large structured handbags replace tiny novelty purses, reflecting a desire for pieces that are both stylish and functional. Belts define oversized blazers and dresses, while sculptural gold jewelry adds warmth against autumn’s deeper palette. Scarves also return as statement accessories, from oversized wool wraps to silk neck scarves and textured cashmere styles. Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Fall 2026 is its emphasis on individuality. Instead of dictating one must-have item, the season encourages personal interpretation. Mixing vintage finds with contemporary tailoring, investing in well-made basics and choosing accessories that reflect personal style all contribute to wardrobes that feel authentic rather than trend-driven. As temperatures cool and layers return, Fall 2026 reminds us that the most stylish wardrobes are not necessarily the most complicated. They are built on exceptional fabrics, flattering silhouettes and timeless design. This season, dressing well is less about following every trend and more about finding confidence in clothes that truly fit your life.

wiping the canvas clean An Iconic Minneapolis Penthouse Begins Its Next Masterpiece Perched atop the distinctive 301 Kenwood Parkway building, directly across from the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and neighboring the Walker Art Center, one of Minneapolis' most remarkable residences is entering an entirely new chapter. After serving for more than two decades as a deeply personal home and gallery for passionate art collectors, the sixth-floor penthouse has been carefully transformed – not into a finished luxury residence, but into something far rarer: possibility. Today, the approximately 7,000-squarefoot full-floor residence has been stripped back to its architectural bones, offering buyers the chance to create a one-ofa-kind home in one of the city's most coveted locations. Whether reimagined as one expansive residence or divided into two separate luxury condominiums, the space represents something increasingly difficult to find in Minneapolis – a blank canvas. And perhaps nowhere is that metaphor more fitting. The previous owners, Doris and Leo Hodroff, were devoted art collectors who envisioned their home as an extension of the artwork they loved. By combining two condominium units into one extraordinary residence, they created a space

that featured its own gallery corridor, allowing art to become part of the home's everyday experience. "It actually had a gallery space within the unit that sort of ran through these two units, and it's kind of what tied them together," explains Ellyn Wolfenson, realtor and estate representative. "They were really tremendous art collectors, and they decided that they were going to not only reinvent the home that they moved from into this condo unit, but they were going to make it an art gallery." The residence was thoughtfully customized to suit their lifestyle, creating an environment unlike any other in the building. It reflected their passions beautifully and served them perfectly for many years. But like every great work of design, architecture evolves alongside the people who inhabit it. Wolfenson and business partner Matt Baker recognized that the home's next chapter required a different approach. Rather than asking buyers to imagine removing layers of previous construction, they made the bold decision to remove everything first. "We were going to have to demolish everything so people could really see what it could be," Wolfenson says.
“ We were going to have to demolish ever y thing so people could really see what it could be.”
That decision proved far more complex than anticipated. What was initially expected to take just a couple of weeks stretched into nearly two months. Because of the boutique building's design, demolition debris couldn't simply be hauled through the elevators. Every piece had to be carefully removed using cranes and specialized chutes, creating an intricate logistical project unlike a typical renovation.
"It was supposed to take two weeks," Baker recalls. "It took two months. It was complicated in the nature of the building." Today, visitors stepping off the building's private elevator are greeted not by polished finishes, but by exposed concrete floors, unfinished ceilings and uninterrupted space. Rather than feeling incomplete, the shell reveals something even more compelling – the architecture itself. CONTINUED >

"It's rough," Wolfenson says. "But it's a blank canvas." That idea became the guiding philosophy behind the project. Instead of marketing the property as a resale condominium, Baker believes it should be viewed almost as a new construction opportunity. "There are so few new construction opportunities," he says. "We're basically wiping the canvas clean." The comparison feels especially appropriate given the building's artistic surroundings. Standing across from the Sculpture Garden, the residence enjoys sweeping views that encompass downtown Minneapolis, the Walker Art Center, the Basilica of Saint Mary and the city's skyline. Large expanses of glass transform the ever-changing landscape into living artwork, with each season bringing a different visual experience. "The outdoors is really art," Baker says. “It’s beautiful inside and out.” That relationship between architecture and landscape has long made 301 Kenwood Parkway one of Minneapolis' most recognizable residential buildings. Home to only about a dozen residences, the boutique property offers a level of privacy rarely found in urban living while placing residents within walking distance of museums, theaters, sporting venues, lakes, trails and downtown attractions. "It's such a cool building," Wolfenson says. "It's just a really unique opportunity to have this magnificent building in this unbelievable location and have a buyer be able to reimagine and reinvent—from the ground up—a fresh start." The lifestyle extends well beyond the walls of the residence itself. Residents can stroll through the Sculpture Garden before dinner, bike to Target Field, spend afternoons at the Walker Art Center, or enjoy easy access to Minneapolis' Chain of Lakes, the Guthrie Theater and the city's vibrant Warehouse District. Few addresses combine cultural landmarks, outdoor recreation and downtown convenience as seamlessly. For prospective buyers, flexibility may be the greatest luxury of all. The sixth floor can remain a dramatic full-floor residence of roughly 7,000 square feet, or it can once again become two separate homes of approximately 3,000 and 4,000 square feet. Each option is being offered as a shell, allowing future owners to select their own architect, designer and builder to create a residence tailored entirely to their vision. Concept renderings and virtual designs will help buyers imagine the possibilities, but the final expression remains intentionally unwritten. "It's the opportunity to come in and do what you want, the way you want it," Baker says. "People don't have to remodel someone else's decorating or pay a lot of money for what somebody else has done."

“It’s the opportunity to come in and do what you want, the way you want it. People don’t have to remodel someone else’s decorating or pay a lot of money for what somebody else has done.”
Instead, they're beginning with pure potential, which in many ways, mirrors the creative process itself. Artists often begin with a blank canvas. Architects begin with an empty structure. Every masterpiece starts with possibility. Wolfenson believes the home's previous owners would appreciate that philosophy. "I think they would be really proud and excited to be presenting this space to somebody else to have the same opportunity they had," she says. As the property prepares to debut on the market, it stands as something more than another luxury listing. It is a rare invitation to participate in the next chapter of an architectural landmark. The walls may have come down, but the vision has only grown larger. Across from one of Minnesota's most celebrated collections of public art, a new masterpiece is waiting—not to be admired, but to be created. Interested in working with Ellyn and Matt? Wear Colors That Truly
LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.
CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.
THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.
BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!
PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.

It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
