Let's Make the Most of Summer

We all know that our precious summer season is short. Weather and time commitment permitting, it can become even shorter.

To fit the theme of our July issue, I hope you leave time for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.

I don’t mean exploring on your devices (social media doesn’t count). I mean truly exploring an experience, place, book, or destination that will push you out of the normal routine. Maybe it will be with family, maybe with friends, or it could even be a solo excursion.  Exploring doesn’t even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail, seeing a new genre of movie, or going out to find a fun cookie or ice cream place in town. It could even be striking up a conversation with a new acquaintance.

Hunt & Gather is always an adventure. Each room brings unique treasures, blasts from the past, and curated trinkets in every nook and cranny. If you haven’t been here in a while, perhaps it is time to revisit.

We sat down with Marisarah, owner of MN IV, a mobile drip therapy company. In addition to health benefits and relaxation, the best part is that Marisarah and her team of registered nurses will come to you at home, the office, and can accommodate one-on-one or bigger groups.

To make the most of summer, we showcase bigger ideas like glamping destinations close to the Twin Cities, books you can enjoy at home and away, and last but not least; ideas for dining Al Fresco.

Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To plan that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.

Happy 4th of July and enjoy your summer exploring!

(We wanted to note that despite their ad saying 1972-2023, Quality Coaches is still open and doing great work on amazing cars.)

NEED A PICK-ME-UP?

Get an IV Drip in the Comfort of Your Own Home – It's not Just for Famous People

Over the last few years, the growing popularity of vitamin IV drips has been seen all over social media and reality TV shows. Stars like Snooki from The Jersey Shore and the whole Kardashian family have received IV treatments when they were feeling sick, rundown or in need of a boost.

Marisarah Larvick
"We come to you, whether that’s your home, office, hotel or even camper, making the whole process smoother and time efficient.”

But what really is an IV drip? Is it worth all the hubbub or is it just for the famous?

This is where Marisarah Larvick, owner and founder of MN IV comes into play. She’s the real expert here.

“Essentially, IV drips are just like what you would see by going into the hospital,” she says. “It’s one liter of normal saline that is infused directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous catheter, skipping your GI tract, for faster absorption. However, at MN IV, the main difference is that we come to you, whether that’s your home, office, hotel or even camper, making the whole process smoother and time efficient.”

The leading IV drip misconception, Marisarah explains, is that you must be sick to receive treatment.

“75 to 80% of our population is chronically dehydrated, which over time can lead to chronic illness,

brain fog, poor sleep, inflammation – the list goes on,” she explains. “Getting IV fluids with some vitamins and minerals can alleviate those symptoms and increase your energy levels so you can show up in your everyday life ready to go. Of course, we do help those with cold and flu-like symptoms, but it’s not the main factor.”

Besides getting an IV to simply stay ahead of potential health concerns, a lot of clients call because they are pre- or post-marathon, coming home from a long trip or even hungover.

“We can help with all these things by adding different vitamins to the IV bag, such as magnesium, vitamins C, b-complex vitamins, zinc, amino acids and B12. Each drip is tailored to the client’s needs at that time.”

Another bonus of IV drips is there is typically no downtime after treatment, and clients can decide on the frequency based on how they are feeling.

“We have people that we see every two to four weeks because they have a chronic condition or struggle to stay hydrated, and we have some that we only see every six months,” Marisarah says. “It is completely up to them. There are a few factors that may determine how long your IV drip benefits will last. On average people are feeling the benefits for 7-14 days. If you get a drip right before a crazy party weekend, then it’s only going to last the weekend. If you are sick with cold/flu or food poisoning it may take a couple IV drips over 3-5 days to really get you over the hump. Our service is very customizable, and we discuss with each client on what they can expect based on what’s going on.”

For potential first-timers, Marisarah calms all worries.

“Our first interaction will typically be through a phone call or text message,” she says. “We gather all the necessary information to make sure you are a great candidate for our services. From there you will fill out some electronic paperwork and confirm your appointment.

“Then one of our 10 registered nurses will come out to your preferred location and administer the IV. The whole process takes about 45 to 60 minutes.”

Each one of those 10 nurses has at least three to five years of hospital experience and is an expert in IV insertion. They come to the team already having all the skills required to make each appointment safe, comfortable and easy.

Marisarah herself was an RN for 15 years, mostly in the emergency department, before starting MN IV  two years ago.

"One of my favorite things now is seeing customers come back. Then I know we really did something special for them.”

“Although my team has grown to 10, I still find myself going out into the field to work with our clients. I started MN IV because of my passion for emergency medicine, administering IVs and helping people, so if I get caught up in the administration side of business, I get too antsy and need to get out there with our people.”

After two years in business, Marisarah says it has been really rewarding being able to help so many around the Twin Cities.

“It’s funny because a lot of people still don’t know that this is an option in Minnesota, and they get very excited about it. One of my

favorite things now is seeing customers come back. Then I know we really did something special for them.”

So to answer the question – Is it just for the famous? – no it’s not just for the Snookis and Kardashians of the world. It’s for busy parents, professionals, athletes and anyone in between, because everyone deserves to feel their best.

To learn more about MN IV or to make an appointment, visit mnivnow.com or call/text 612-216-3922. MN IV is open seven days a week by appointment only. They accept private pay, HSA and FSA.

ODDITIES, TREASURES AND TRINKETS

“OVER THE YEARS, MY PASSION PROJECT QUICKLY TURNED INTO A FAMILY AFFAIR WITH MY FATHER HELPING OUT AND MY DAUGHTERS

When the owner of Hunt & Gather, a vintage amusement store, was a little girl she loved being surrounded by all things antique.

“My great-grandfather came over from Norway and started a general store in southwest Minnesota,” Kristi Stratton explains. “Besides selling the day-to-day essentials, the store was filled with unique, old items that my grandparents collected. What didn’t fit in the store, they lined the shelves of their big house with.”

Kristi loved playing with the aged tin toys and watching her great-grandmother combat wrinkles on her linen sheets with an 1800s metal iron.

“They did everything old school and that is where my love for all things old began.”

Before opening Hunt & Gather in 2003, Kristi worked as an antique dealer, collecting interesting items for others to cherish.

“My booth was a mixture of typical vintage goodies and the weird, out-of-the-box pieces that maybe not everyone would love,” she says. “But that is the best part. Finding those oddities that are a perfect match for a singular individual.”

What made things even more special was that Kristi’s booth was located in what was to become Hunt & Gather.

“The space that I have now was once an antique mall under a different name,” she explains. “When this location on 50th and Xerxes came up for sale, I just knew I had to take the opportunity to start my own business.”

At the time, Kristi was a mom of two under two, so she only planned on purchasing a part of the building.

“Besides being busy in my personal life, the shop was dirty, dusty, and needed a lot of repairs. It seemed like too much to take on, but my husband convinced me to buy the entire building, which I’m so glad he did.

“Over the years, my passion project quickly turned into a family affair with my father helping out and my daughters running around, hiding their Webkinz in different nooks and crannies. It’s funny because just like I grew up in my great-grandparent’s store, my daughters grew up in mine. They are both in fashion school now, but help out when they are home from New York.”

Now 20 years later, Hunt & Gather stands as a highly curated shopping experience like no other. As soon as one enters the landmark doors, their eyes are greeted with a chaotic masterpiece of trinkets and treasures.

“The store is basically exploding with quirky, oddball pieces and anything else you could possibly think of,” Kristi says. “I have 15 vendors who have their own section of the space and then I make up about 50% of all other items. We sell everything from rugs, trophy cups, globes, furniture, vintage clothing, glassware, old polaroids, letters, signage, jewelry and so much more.

“When you come in, it’s loud, it’s fun. We have awesome music playing and great customer service. My main goal has been to always keep changing so that every time someone comes in, it’s different.”

The front entryway is completely redecorated and redesigned every month or so, keeping it fresh and exciting.

“People say Hunt & Gather is their happy place,” Kristi says. “I want to keep it that way. And let me tell you, I don’t plan on retiring so this happy place is going to be around for a very long time.”

KOOB S T O TAKEYOU AWAY

I ASKED MY EXPAT AND TRAVEL-SAVVY FRIENDS TO RECOMMEND BOOKS TO TAKE ME FAR AWAY. HERE YOU GO!

Blue Latitudes

Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before. The Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist travels to various parts of the world, following in the footsteps of explorer James Cook.

The Island of Missing Trees

It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.

The Corfu Trilogy

Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise -  My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The

Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy

Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu, where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.

Cutting for Stone

Cutting for Stone is a novel written by Ethiopian-born, Indian-American medical doctor and author Abraham Verghese. It is a saga of twin brothers, orphaned by their mother’s death at their births and forsaken by their father.

The Museum of Innocence

The author is a Nobel-laureate Turkish novelist. The book, set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984, is an account of the love story between the wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relative of his, Füsun.

Al Fr es co STYLE

Spending time outdoors and enjoying friends and family over good food and drinks is a great way to enjoy the season’s beautiful weather. From the fresh flower arrangements, produce, and herbs, this earthy spread is brimming with character and flavor. The earthy ceramic and clay vases give the perfect vessel to fill with organic cut herbs and handpicked wildflowers. We arranged a beautiful medley of Queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, rosemary, lavender, lamb’s ear, nigella, buddleia, oregano, dill, feverfew, and geranium to name just a few of these beautiful blooms.

We love a good home-cooked menu mixed with a signature drink, so we paired our meal with a delicious craft cocktail. Buttermilk brined fried chicken was a must for this outdoor party. A delicious peach bread pudding with salted vanilla caramel cream rounded out our meal for the perfect sweet treat. We wanted to share a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at home. Enjoy!
