LIFESTYLE LETTER
We Love It Here
February 2024 PUBLISHER
It’s the month of love, Minneapolis Lakes! We hope you are feeling lots of it for family, friends, and our beautiful community. It always brings me joy to hear from people who read the publication and comment that they have learned something new about our area. This month brings about Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day and different ways of celebrating everything you love, and we hope the pages of this “Love Local” issue will help you do just that as we highlight a few gems. Speaking of gems, Gunderson’s shares their history and specialties in the jewelry realm. Whether it’s a gift or a treat for yourself, there will be something for everyone to love. We spoke with Ellyn Wolfenson and Matt Baker of Coldwell Banker on two treasured homes in the city. Frequently known as the “mushroom” houses, these iconic properties grace our pages and remind us of the unique local architecture and fun buildings we have grown to recognize. Modo Yoga is transitioning to the new MÖV Hot Yoga and owners Latricia, Steve and Steph talk about their love for the practice and how important it is for us to slow down and breathe. Lastly, we wanted to shed some light on Gateway Bank. Their love and commitment to community while helping people’s dreams come true is at the forefront of every customer touch point. The Minneapolis Lakes Team believes what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart, and our hope is that we inspire you to love our area just a bit more than you did before. While we teeter between the chill of winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you will be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street, in your neighborhood and your community. Sending you all much love this February,

TREASURED R E A L E S TAT E OPPORTU NITIES Iconic Homes That Bring a Touch of Whimsy to the Area
Anyone who lives or drives around Minneapolis has had the pleasure of viewing some of the most iconic structures in the area – the Mushroom houses, or as they’re also known, Gnome homes and Hobbit houses. These cottage-inspired structures, with their mushroom cap-styled roofs, were designed to blend into their surrounding landscapes. Master Builder Earl Young was the designer behind many of the homes in the area, which bring interesting character and a sense of whimsy to the neighborhoods where they’re located. Recently, two of these unique homes went on the market, which is a rare opportunity
for buyers. “These iconic homes are so desirable and people sort of covet them,” says Ellyn Wolfenson, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty in Minneapolis. “We're just so honored to represent them.” The first one, located in the desirable neighborhood of Kenwood Parkway and priced at $1,075,000, is like something out of a fairy tale. “To me, it's like a gingerbread house,” she says. “You follow the breadcrumbs to this home and all of a sudden there’s this complete treasure at the end. It's the most charming character-laden home I have ever been in.”

Adds her colleague, Realtor Matt Baker, “It's a country estate, and the romance and excitement begins well before you walk into the home. It's a double lot and it's on a parcel that's extensive without proximity to neighbors. You're in this remarkable location where you can walk to the sculpture garden or brunch at the Walker. And you have these outdoor spaces, probably four to five distinct patios, decks, and a porte-cochère. When you look at the entryway of the home with its table, it's like you're in Tuscany. People just so enjoy the inside and the outside of the home.” Another aspect that makes this home special is a renovated carriage house with a full kitchen. It can be an office, a studio, a gym, apartment or anything the buyer wants it to be. It can even be used as a rental property. The second home, offered at $4,599,000, is much larger, and oozes luxury, but its historic details have been lovingly preserved in keeping with its landmark status. “In my opinion, this is probably the most iconic home in the Lake of the Isles area,” says Ellyn. “I remember this home when I was a little girl, but since then it has been completely redone. They managed to keep the integrity of the home since its inception and it’s absolutely beautiful in every way. It's the most design-forward home while keeping the integrity of the home that I've ever seen.” “I would just put an exclamation point on what Ellyn said,” says Matt. “I don't think there’s another home in Lake of the Isles of that vintage. They didn't try to make it something that it isn't, but they spared no expense whatsoever, mechanically or structurally. It’s truly better than new and that's really significant. There's a profound investment in every aspect. It's just enchanting.” It has a magnificent backyard space with glimpses of the lake as well. “There's also an English-inspired screened four-season porch that's just stunning,” says Ellyn. “With its chaise lounges, you can just imagine yourself falling asleep there or watching the world go by.” A stone fire pit area and covered patio add even more charm. The two homes are at very different price points, so there’s an opportunity for buyers who may want to stay at a somewhat lower budget to those who prefer to purchase bigger at a higher-end price.

The Kenwood Parkway house, explains Ellyn, is the sister house of the Lake of the Isles home, so there's a relationship between the homes. They were both built in the very early 1920s. “Everyone is so excited and impressed with these homes,” says Matt. By the time this article is published, these charming and captivating homes may be off the market, but if not, Ellyn and Matt look forward to

ounded by George and Dee Gunderson, Gunderson’s Jewelers has been bringing smiles and beauty into people’s lives for over 75 years. Still family-owned and operated, its high standards of customer service, selection, quality, and integrity have been passed down from generation to generation. Today, their grandson, Brian Gunderson, is the owner and CEO, taking over from his father, Gary, in 1999. “I know there are other family-owned businesses in town, but you don’t see that a lot anymore,” says Wayzata store manager, Samantha Bergmann, who has been with the company for 10 years. “It’s not a rare occurrence to have Brian or
Breanne, our president, walk into the store and hang out with us for a day or two.” Whether celebrating a marriage, birth, graduation, or other happy occasion, many families love honoring a milestone with a special piece of jewelry or a stately timepiece. “We have all these special moments and it’s very exciting to mark those with a piece of jewelry or a watch that can be passed down to family members,” she says. “It’s just one of those things that can last a lifetime.” Of course, Valentine’s Day is one of these occasions where people want to delight and surprise their loved ones with a special gift. It’s a busy time of year for the store with customers looking for just the right thing to express their love and appreciation for the important person or people in their lives.
“We definitely have a great assortment of pieces and something that would hit everybody’s price point,” says Samantha. “Some of my favorites would be from our newer line called Messika. It’s all about how diamonds move and how the light plays with the different diamonds. It’s just a really fun and unique look.” With its array of delicate and lovely rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings, customers can buy one piece or mix and match to make their own collections. “And for men, we have a very extensive line of watches,” she says. “We carry some that are only offered by us in the Twin Cities like IWC Schaffhausen and ORIS. They make some really fantastic timepieces for men. We also carry William Henry, which has some fun gifts and unique bracelets for men.”

“Our entire staff takes the time to listen to exactly what a customer is l ook ing for an d m ak es sure th e y’re get t ing wh at i s pe r fect for th e ir w a n t s a n d n e e d s .” If a customer doesn’t want to choose from all that’s available in the store or has a particular image in mind, Gunderson’s can make a custom piece and turn their vision into reality. Whether it’s an image in someone’s mind or on a piece of paper, the master jewelers and designers can create exactly what’s desired. “Our team here is very capable and willing to help with a custom piece,” says Samantha. “We do tons of them as a company and especially here in the Twin Cities.” Another option is to repair or remake a piece of beloved jewelry. “We have an in-house jeweler who’s absolutely fantastic and very talented with coming up with ideas for revitalizing pieces that might not be someone’s current style.” Of course, Valentine’s Day is not just for romantic partners. Often, customers want to buy something for their parents or other family members. For this, Gunderson’s is a one-stop shop. There are wonderful home items including pretty heart-shaped crystal bowls and culinary options. “We have very nice kitchen knives,” she says. “They also come with a beautiful wooden display.” One of Samantha’s personal favorite offerings are the Mova Globes. “They are interesting and beautiful pieces that can go on any desk or bookshelf. They’re self-moving globes, so they will spin by themselves.” There are a handful that are sports-related, and some that depict a map of the world and other intricate motifs.

If customers aren’t sure what to get that special person in their lives, the staff at Gunderson’s, with their years of experience, can make it easy. “Our customers become part of our family,” she says. “Our entire staff takes the time to listen to exactly what a customer is looking for and makes sure they’re getting what is perfect for their wants and needs.” The company also strongly believes in giving back to the communities in which it does business. Some of the ways it does this is by holding special fundraisers and donating funds to the American Cancer Society, Ronald McDonald House, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Masonic Children’s Hospital, and many more. What started out as one man mastering watchmaking many years ago, and then opening a store in Sioux City, IA, while expanding into diamonds, precious gems, other luxury jewelry and amazing gifts, now has multiple locations and is still growing. In addition to the Sioux City and Wayzata store, Gunderson’s can be found in Sioux Falls; SD, Omaha; NE, Fargo; ND, and coming soon, a 25,000-square-foot store in Omaha’s Heartwood Preserve. To find an unforgettable and special gift for that amazing someone in your life, visit a store or see all they have to offer on their website and on Instagram. Bring smiles and joy not only for the holiday, but all year round. 300 Superior Blvd, Wayzata Gundersons.com | 612-338-5950

Slow Down and Take a Breath
THE MANY HEALTH BENEFITS OF YOGA 28
G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S
In this sometimes frenzied and fast-paced world, it’s important to have the opportunity to slow down, listen to our bodies and give our minds a mental health break. For many people, obtaining this mindfulness and sense of bliss is accomplished through yoga. “To me, the most powerful part of yoga is that it teaches a physical, spiritual, and mental connection,” says Latricia Askew, who has been in the yoga industry for 20 years and has been teaching for 13 years. “Instead of rushing through something, or running, or going to the gym, you're making mindful decisions. Yoga is essentially a moving meditation, so you're moving your body and you're exercising, but there's that really powerful mental element too.” Latricia, along with Steph Lund and Steven Mohn, are rebranding what is currently the franchise Modo Yoga in Minneapolis to MÖV Hot Yoga.
Steve discovered the magic of yoga 15 years ago. “I was having horrible back problems and I tried everything,” he says. “I saw doctors, neurologists, chiropractors and did acupuncture and massage. When I came to Modo Yoga for the first time, it was clear that yoga was a great workout. I kept doing it and added on barre when they started offering it.” It gave him his life back. “My back is amazing. I can golf, I can skate and play hockey again. I've seen what this place has done for me and for other people.” Steph began going to Modo Yoga, now MÖV Hot Yoga, when she was working as a sales rep for a yoga accessories company. “I love this studio and group of people and wanted to become more involved, and here we are.” Since technology is not allowed in the studio space, people can truly get away from everything. “Some people find that really difficult to do, but it's such a good release from everything outside
our door and allows this to be a place to escape,” she says. “It's pretty lovely, actually.” “You come to a yoga practice and you have that hour to yourself,” says Steve. “It's quiet, but you're with a group working together towards a goal.” In addition to relaxation and mindfulness, spending time in its infrared, or hot room, provides a whole host of perks. “Infrared heat has proven health benefits and is one of the things that we're really excited about,” says Latricia. Adds Steve, “Harvard just published a study on how it helps with dementia and processing and just all the different health elements.” “Logistically, this is the best hot room I've ever experienced,” says Latricia. It’s also an oasis from the cold and blustery winter. People can still get their exercise in and not have to worry about the harsh elements. CONTINUED >

One of their favorite things about MÖV Hot Yoga is its incredible community. “I think that's a really big part of why people come here,” says Latricia. “It's not just about practicing yoga. There's a chance to really connect with other people.” Adds Steph, “I love that our studio has large locker rooms, which I believe encourages people to visit because they’re not on top of each other. As they're cooling down, they can visit about their kids or what they've got going for the rest of the day or what they're doing that weekend. There's just more space for people to congregate after class and people really like that.” Since MÖV Hot Yoga continues to offer a wide range of classes and intensity levels, it’s open to everyone. “We have people ranging in age from teenagers all the way up to those in their 70s and 80s,” says Latricia. “We have styles of yoga that really fit everybody’s style and type, which I think is unusual, and we also offer barre classes. “If you're looking to have a Zen experience, we have classes for that. If you're looking to come and have a Zen and workout experience, we have classes for that. What I love about it is it’s not one size fits all.” Adds Steve, “There are so many different levels of classes, and all the teachers offer different difficulties, so people can choose a restorative class or a class where they really want to work hard.” Right now, people can sign up for an introductory month for $39 and take unlimited classes for that month. They can then roll that over into a monthly membership. The three partners are really excited about building this new brand because while they plan to continue the same amazing services that the studio has always had, they’re also open to trying new things. “We now have the ability to really open up the types of classes that we teach and the types of workshops we offer and have this sort of ‘University of Yoga,’ a place where you can get a lot in one place,” says Latricia. In a cozy conference room at Gateway Bank, I had the pleasure of sitting with five of the bank’s key associates in early December. Sitting at a table with Bruce Downey, bank president, John Schreier, CEO, Brian Maxwell, market president, Becky Durand, VP of business banking, and Gabrielle Peterson, marketing coordinator, it was quickly evident that this would not be a typical interview. Before our discussion even began, a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose wafted through the room. The team welcomed me into the heart of a financial institution that has not only stood the test of time but has thrived in its commitment to the community, clients, and associates.
A FOCUS ON COMMUNITY
"Take care of our associates, take care of our clients, and take care of our community." These words from Bruce Downey, the president of Gateway Bank, echo the founding principles that have guided this institution since its inception in 2004. As the 20th-anniversary celebrations unfold, it's a testament to the journey that began with humble beginnings in a double-wide trailer, where Bruce Downey and John Schreier decided to forge their path in the banking world. The decision to start Gateway Bank emerged from a desire to control destiny, a sentiment Bruce expressed as he left his previous role at Signal Bank. Over breakfast at a local Perkins restaurant, Bruce and John laid the foundation for what would become a haven for community-centric banking. Alongside them from the early days is Becky Durand, now in a business banker role, embodying the community touch that Gateway Bank is known for. "Becky is the keeper of our culture," quipped Brian Maxwell, the Market President based in Edina. This light-hearted remark masks the underlying commitment to a unique culture that is practically Gateway's mantra. The philosophy, according to John, is simple: "Make the bank a great place to work, and it will be
a great place to bank." It's this approach that fosters an open-door policy, not just for associates but also for clients. "We're more than just a bank,” says John. “We know our clients.”
MORE THAN FINANCIAL SERVICES – HELPING CLIENTS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS
Gateway Bank doesn't just offer financial services; it helps people realize their dreams. Whether it's a construction loan, a business loan, or a simple savings account, the offerings are as diverse as the dreams they support. "Old fashioned service with modern products," as Brian puts it, is the unique blend that defines the Gateway experience. In a world where banking often feels transactional, Gateway Bank stands out, fostering relationships. When you bank with them, you engage with highly skilled, hard-working professionals dedicated to making client service a reality. Their focus on building and nurturing strong relationships extends beyond the bank's walls and into the community. Gateway Gives, their community engagement program, encapsulates this spirit. From Adopt-A-Highway initiatives to participating in Back-to-School Drives that support local schools, Gateway Bank associates are deeply committed to making a difference. As the 20th-anniversary celebrations unfold, Gateway Bank remains a steadfast pillar in the local landscape. The bank supports its clients and empowers its associates, giving each of them a paid day off annually to volunteer for a cause of their choice. So, if you're seeking a bank that seamlessly blends old-fashioned service with modern conveniences, Gateway Bank is ready to welcome you. With convenient locations in Mendota Heights and Edina, they are not just a bank but a community-driven financial partner celebrating 20 years of excellence.
