style ISSUE

My friend gave me a card many years ago that read “Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess.”
Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others with whom we can share.
As individuals, we are lucky to have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in the Minneapolis Lakes area to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity and ignite our creativity.
That’s why with our annual Style issue, the team is touching upon a few things that encompass several different genres of style that make our community stand out.
We rediscover the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and what a great staple it is for the city, the community, tourism and the art world. We dive a bit into fashion with new and old tips for the Little Black Dress, reinspiring your own personal style and decluttering your closet. Hirshfield’s shares the latest and greatest paint trends for your home, and we also provide information from experienced pros on how to host the best outdoor dinner party before our fall season ends. Our staff also took some tidbits from our partners on stylish furniture choices and beautiful architectural ideas (both a practical and stylish way to dress up your home).
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.
Here’s to being uniquely you!

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden has stood as a hub for local and international artists to showcase their work since 1988.
Since its opening, the garden has welcomed millions of visitors, allowing them to see pieces from the Walker Art Center’s renowned collection in a unique urban, outdoor setting. The garden is a partnership between the art center and the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board.
It’s also free and open to the public 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to midnight. No tickets are required.
As visitors peruse the grounds, they can stop to take in more than 40 sculptures, all of which are created by generations of artists from 10 different countries. According to garden representatives, many of the works are site-specific and constructed especially for the park – from
the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry centerpiece to structures that offer spaces for gathering, conversation, or dreaming.
In 2017, the garden was fully reconstructed, now featuring sustainable water management, habitat for plants and wildlife, and new landscape elements.
One of the newest artworks to join the grounds is Okciyapi (2021), a commission by Twin Cities–based artist Angela Two Stars (Dakota, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate). Her sculpture was inspired by the legacies of her grandfather and treasured elders working in language revitalization efforts.
According to garden representatives, “The rings of seating elements are based on patterns of rippling water and symbolize relationships between individuals and communities. Just as a drop of water creates ripples that flow across a lake, one speaker’s shared knowledge can spread to future generations. Parts of the work bring forward aspects of the environment and the land’s history. Plantings of flowers and grasses native to the region draw our attention to the natural world in this urban setting.
“In the sculpture’s center, a water dome mirrors the sky, a reference to the name Minnesota—or Mni Sota Makoce in Dakota—which means ‘land where the waters reflect the clouds.’
Throughout the work, Two Stars offers ways for us to encounter and experience the Dakota language both as written and spoken words. Some are engraved into the benches, expressing Native values and offering encouragement: woksapé (wisdom), wóohoda (respect), and wóohitika (bravery).”
This fall art connoisseurs can see Okciyapi on display as they attend the 2023 Avant Garden party. The event combines dancing, dining, cocktails, and an art auction for a night full of fun. Don’t forget to get creative with your outfit and wear something art worthy.
Tickets are on sale now. All proceeds will benefit the Walker, helping them empower people to experience the transformative possibilities of the art and ideas of our time and to imagine the world in new ways.

It’s not often that a new paint collection arrives on the scene but when one does, it brings a fresh, trendy take on the classics that inspire us to update our surroundings.
The Hirshfield’s Color Is palette has been around for many years and was due for a refresh to bring in more of the trending colors. That can be a spendy undertaking for a local family-owned paint manufacturer like us so we added a separate collection of colors to update the palette by creating the Color Is…Refined collection.
Do we need another paint fan deck? Duh…of course! And beyond the perfectly appropriate reason of “Because,” here’s why:
• On-trend colors: The colors are fantastic, wonderfully muted & timeless hues that are very much on trend.
• Manageable size: It’s a stand-alone collection of 132 colors, meaning you can find the right neutrals and some on-trend accent colors in just this one palette.
• Go-to whites: There are 12 incredible whites/offwhites that help you narrow down the search for that perfect white. They are balanced with the undertones that work with current design trends.
• Luscious dark colors: There are sumptuous dark hues in this collection – deep gray greens, interesting dark blues, rich blacks, and some charming deep reds and purples.
A few favorites from the collection include:
• Silver Shine R061: A perfect blend of blue, gray, and green that is a dynamic and silvery livable neutral.
• Verde R058: A dark green with fresh lemon undertones to give it a bit of welcome brightness.
• Durum Wheat R052: A fresh and happy yet slightly muted yellow with hints of green that brings a bit of life to a front door.
• Space Dive R023: A classic bronzy deep gray. One of those go-to dark neutrals that have a bit of dramatic interest.
As customers explore Color Is…Refined , we thought we would offer some tips for choosing the perfect colors for your homes. Happy painting!
• When trying to decide on a color, first hold the swatch up vertically against a white sheet of paper – the color will appear different when held up on a wall and not viewed flat on a table. This will help you identify the undertones in the color. Pick 2-3 options and get a sample pint of paint for each (around $10), tagboard, and a chip brush (all available at Hirshfield’s.) Paint two coats and tape the tagboard up on various walls in the room or outside to get a true idea of the color.
• For the exterior, choose a color a bit darker than you think as the sunlight will wash out colors. For both interior and exterior, choose a grayer option of the hue you’re interested in – you may be surprised about how much color is still present and a grayer option isn’t as bold or overwhelming. For the truest color, your brand of color and paint should match; for example, a Hirshfield’s color should be made in Hirshfield’s paint. This is because the paint bases (cans of paint before color is added) and colorants work together to create the exact color. Trying to create a different brand’s color in another brand’s paint will most often not produce the color you’re looking for.
• Hirshfield’s has free color help available in their stores and they also have professional color consultants that, for a fee, can come to you and help you find colors that work with your décor. Learn more at Hirshfields.com

Blair Moore has loved all things fashion from a young age. The Nashville native studied Fashion Merchandising and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fashion capital of the world, New York City. It was inevitable the mother of three would find herself in a career where she would help other women find their confidence through their wardrobe. Blair says, “I love helping women find their true personal style and get them organized in their closet so they feel truly empowered to get dressed each day with ease and confidence!” Blair shares four trends for spring and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe.
This season, bright colors such as hot pink and kelly green are trending. I know this can be difficult for my neutral-loving ladies, so I always recommend starting small. Choose a fun, colorful earring or add a bold clutch to brighten up your look. You can also have fun with your shoes by adding a colorful heel or sandal to a dress or denim outfit.
From floral midi dresses to feminine floral blouses, this season is all about flower power. Choose a flowy floral skirt and pair it with your favorite knotted tee and sandals for an effortless look. Tip: If wearing a dress with a large floral print, try adding a denim jacket, light cardigan or woven belt to add texture and break up the print.
From casual jogger sets to feminine tiered skirts and puff-sleeved tops, two-piece sets are everywhere! What I adore about twopiece sets is that you can wear them in multiple ways. Wear it as a set or take the top and pair it with denim, or take the skirt and pair it with a tee and light jacket or blazer. Two pieces, but multiple ways to wear them!
Let me be clear — I LOVE a skinny jean and always will! But the 90s denim trend is having a moment and if you want to embrace it, here are a couple of tips: Choose a fit that is high-rise with a more relaxed fit through the leg. You want the jean to fall right above the ankle bone. This is slimming and flattering to the eye. Pair with a strappy heel, sneaker or slide.

Edit down your closet. Ask yourself these three things: Do you still like it? Does it fit within reason? Is it still in good condition? If the answer is no, it’s time to donate or sell that item. Keep a donation basket in your closet to help you stay on track.
Buy something new, get rid of something old. Each time you buy a new item, get rid of an item in your closet. This manages the chaos of having too many options in your closet. We only wear about 20% of the items in our closet, so make a list before shopping and shop with intention.
When it comes to organization, having a system in place is key. Utilize the entire space for your items. For example, buy closed bins for out of season or travel items and place them on the top shelf. Utilize the back of the door or any blank walls with hooks for hats or a jewelry organizer. Get rid of items that are taking up space in your closet like shoe boxes, sentimental items, and bulky items like luggage. Store them elsewhere if you can. The two best things you can do to save on space and have an organized closet is to invest in all matching slim velvet hangers. This frees up more space in your closet and looks great, too. And finally, add matching labeled baskets for folded items to keep everything nicely organized and in specific categories.
Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings. For this alfresco dinner party, Chef Kyle draws on his favorite recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast.
• Build a menu around the season. Start with what produce is available locally based on the season for the most authentic meal experience. For instance, Chef Kyle says “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” but that meal served in the heat of Summer wouldn’t hit the same. In-season fruits and vegetables will always be of highest quality and best taste.
• Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.
• Draw inspiration from the season’s colors and temperatures. For Spring and Summer, think flowers, fresh herbs and linens. For Fall, think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” For Winter, head indoors to create a cozy environment for guests to connect.
• “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with bur - nished brass for warm fall vibes.”
• An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.”
• Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.”
• To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!”
• As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” Insider Tips for Hosting: “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Yield: 6 servings
• 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved
• 1-2 tablespoons olive oil
• ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced
• 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin
• 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice
• Salt, pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted
• Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional).
2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven.
4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes.
5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes.
6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute.
7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley.
9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
• If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters.
• Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
Yield: 6-10 servings
• 2 cups heirloom carrot, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom rutabaga, peeled, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom parsnip, cubed
• 1 cup heirloom turnip, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom marble potatoes, halved
• 3 tablespoons rosemary, fresh, de-stemmed, chopped
• 1 tablespoon thyme, fresh, de-stemmed, chopped
• 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• Salt – to taste
• Pepper – to taste
• Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. Pre-heat oven to 400°F on convection setting (425°F conventional).
2. In mixing bowl, add oil and raw cut vegetables. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
3. Place seasoned vegetables on oiled baking sheet and bake in oven until they are caramelized and tender, about 30-60 minutes. Will be soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some lightly charred areas.
4. Remove from oven once finished cooking.
5. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.
6. Enjoy.
Yields 4 cups
• 3 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen
• 1 cup cranberry juice, sweetened
• 1 piece orange peel
• 1 each orange for zesting
• ½ cup orange juice, freshly juiced
• 3 each cinnamon stick
• ¼ teaspoon clove, ground
• ¼ teaspoon allspice, ground
• ½ cup sugar
• Pinch salt
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. In medium saucepot on high heat, add everything except orange peel and orange zest. Bring ingredients to boil, then reduce to a simmer with lid.
2. While simmering, stir occasionally with rubber spatula ensuring bottom does not burn. Simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens.
3. Remove lid and add orange peel and season to taste. Can add more sugar or spice if needed.
4. Once sauce is thickened and most liquid has evaporated, remove orange peel and cinnamon sticks and remove pot from heat.
5. With hand-held blender, puree sauce, keeping some texture.
6. Freshly grate in orange zest, stir and season to taste.
7. Transfer sauce to jar and place in refrigerator to cool overnight.
8. Enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
• Enjoy with all types of poultry and game birds.
• Do not use ground cinnamon.
• Can puree with blender if you do not have hand-held blender.
• Consistency should be thick sauce and not a jelly.
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
OF THE MOST influential PIECES OF CLOTHING.
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.”
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
