Happy New Year Minneapolis Lakes community! When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, family, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days, and it is never too late to hit the reset button and start over. The new year brings reflection on the past, as well as time to strategize for the future. Maybe it’s that bucket list vacation that you want to book, or splurging on a nice dinner out. Maybe it’s a commitment to something important to you and your family. The start of 2023 allows us to wipe the slate clean and set some great goals. January is our Health & Wellness Issue, and we have some good insight into local businesses for you to consider. Our team connected with Linden Hills Dentistry and learned more about their patient-centric approach. Dr. Kordie Reinholdt and Dr. Peter Hinke built this family practice with customized care, health, and comfort for the patient at the forefront. From the moment you walk in the door, you will know you’re in a special clinic. Being your own healthcare advocate is important, and with the everchanging health and wellness landscape, we learned more about Orka Health & Wellness. Founded by sisters Leah Pillsbury and Alexis Bennett, these two licensed, independent clinical social workers built a team of providers who can guide adults and children through challenges like nutrition, anxiety, depression, parenting, and personal growth. Braving the cold winter months is never easy, so we added some fun activities you can enjoy around our beautiful city lakes and trails this January. Choose from sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or fattire biking to name just a few! For fun, we have included a new and healthy recipe from Genna Marks that you can cook for family and friends in the new year. Whether your resolution list is short or long, we encourage you to reset and enjoy a peaceful, filling, fabulous and well-balanced 2023. Leah Pillsbury & Alexis Bennett

A Holistic Approach to Mental Health Sisters Open Teletherapy Clinic to Help People Feel Better ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA TRUETT

Orka Health & Wellness Team

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Sisters, Alexis Bennett and Leah Pillsbury have always had two dreams: opening up a business together and helping people. In August of 2021, the Minnesotan duo turned their dreams into reality when they launched Orka Health and Wellness, a teletherapy clinic. “We both wanted to go into mental health because we enjoy working with people, learning about them and hearing their stories,” Leah says. “Our goal is to get our clients feeling better and living their best lives.” Both sisters are licensed independent clinical social workers and have a combined 28 years of experience in the mental health field. Leah holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California and Alexis attained hers from St. Catherine University. “Leah and I thought about opening a practice together for years, but it felt like such a faraway dream for a while,” Alexis says. “We just knew we wanted to help people. Finally, around 2019-2020, we decided to go for it and started building our business.” The sisters’ original plan involved a physical office, but once the pandemic hit, they changed focus to virtual care. “During COVID-19, people became more comfortable with teletherapy,” Leah says. “People realized, us included, that you really can make a connection over the screen.” They decided to name their practice Orka Health and Wellness in honor of their Swedish and Norwegian background.

“Orka means to have the physical or mental energy to move forward or to be bothered enough to do something about it, “ Leah says. “We want to give people the support they need to create change and move forward.” The clinic officially opened as an online operation in August 2021 with just Alexis and Leah as therapists at first. “The need is apparent,” Alexis says. “So many people are wanting support services. The need is high, and we quickly learned we couldn’t keep up with just the two of us. We wanted to offer a variety of services, so we decided to bring on contractors.” The practice now has five therapists and four other professionals who specialize in many areas including talk therapy, nutrition coaching, ADHD testing, parent coaching and spiritual direction. “We do a lot here,” Alexis says. “We have a licensed psychologist who provides comprehensive individualized evaluations for children, adolescents and adults. Our registered dietician provides healthy meal ideas for picky eaters and ways to fuel athletes of all ages. She also provides virtual cooking classes to help get your kids involved in the kitchen. “Our parent coach works directly with parents to deal with challenging behaviors and equip you with the skills for success to enjoy your kids. Our spiritual director will walk alongside clients as they seek to explore their relationship with God. Her understanding of spirituality is expansive as she works with clients to make sense, meaning and purpose in challenging life experiences.”

“A therapist’s job is to help support a person process through their past, current and future hopes. We believe everyone has a story that’s worth listening to.”

“A perk about Orka is that we are able to connect with clients from all over Minnesota from the easy access and comfort of their own home.” By offering so many services, the sisters aim to provide a holistic approach to what mental health looks like. “A therapist’s job is to help support a person process through their past, current and future hopes,” Alexis says. “We work with preteens to adults of all ages. We believe everyone has a story that’s worth listening to. A perk about Orka is that we are able to connect with clients from all over Minnesota from the easy access and comfort of their own home.” Orka clients don’t have to worry about traffic, transportation or other limitations that would cause a barrier

between them and health care. Every service that Orka offers is completely virtual. As the clinic continues to grow, the sisters hope to take on more clients and help as many people as they can. Those interested in becoming a client can schedule a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your goals, preferences and types of issues you are dealing with. During this meeting, you will be matched with the right therapist for you. Appointments are available during weekdays and nights. For more information, visit orkahealthandwellness.com.

Dr. Hawn & patient

Putting Patients First The minute you walk into the Linden Hills Dentistry office, you will see why they are like no other dental office you have ever been to. Linden Hills Dentistry has created a patient-centric office. With your first phone call, the Patient Coordinators will greet you with hospitality. All your inquiries and concerns will be addressed with a genuinely positive team. Linden Hills Dentistry has recently remodeled and expanded its practice. It now encompasses an additional floor, with five new treatment rooms (for a total of twelve),

an additional reception room, an extra sterilization space, and another conference room. “Basically, we just needed more capacity to serve our patients,” says Dr. Kordie Reinhold, who joined the practice 34+ years ago. Her expertise is in cosmetic dentistry, and of course, creating the environment of the perfect practice. She has poured her heart and soul into LHD. Besides more space, the practice also added new technology. They are proud of their Cone Beam CT 3D Imaging, which is extremely beneficial for implant

placement and endodontic services; another is for improved airway devices. Linden Hills Dentistry also has the support of the best dental studio in the country, and are thrilled that the studio has chosen to work with them to get the best outcome for their patient’s smiles. Linden Hills Dentistry provides a wide range of services for people of all ages, including general dentistry, cosmetic services, Invisalign®, Botox®, wisdom teeth removal, implant placement and restoration as well as oral cancer screenings. At no additional charge, and for their utmost comfort, patients can request noise-canceling headphones, heated blankets, aromatherapy, and much more listed on their Comfort Menu. Linden Hills Dentistry also employs a number of hygienists, who make up the Wellness team, a first-rate administrative staff and a topnotch assisting team. The Wellness Team is prepared to address all of your health questions and concerns. Their Dental Hygienist team of providers is knowledgeable about the role inflammation plays in our physical well-being. It’s all about increasing our immunity and reducing the inflammation in our bodies. There is a distinct connection between optimal oral health and optimal systemic health, and this team will enlighten you to make sure that all your comforts are addressed. “I think it’s important that the people who come here get a good experience,” says Dr. Peter Hinke, who joined Linden Hills Dentistry in 1995, and who provides comprehensive care as well as endodontics. “That’s what really matters to all of us. Having patients want to come back and having their friends and family come here as well is the best compliment we can get.”

In addition to Dr. Reinhold and Dr. Hinke, there are two other partner dentists. Dr. Jane Puntillo, who is passionate about high-quality, gentle care, as well as services to enhance the patient experience and convenience. Dr. Matt Hawn, who joined over two years ago, also brings much experience in addition to expanded services for the patients. Patients love him and his charming personality! Together, they have an awesome team of dentists. “We work with the best people!” says Dr. Reinhold. “Great hygienists and great business staff who are very motivated and engaged. Our Assisting team is the best ever! We have created a great culture for our patients and our team that everyone appreciates!” Adds Dr. Hinke, “It’s a very unique workplace and everyone looks forward to coming to work and serving our patients.” Dr. Reinhold stresses that they have a true commitment to service when she says, “We have all done extensive training and are always striving to make the patient experience more enjoyable.” “We spend a lot of time working on that and it’s part of who we are,” she says. “There are many people who find dentistry rather stressful and it’s really rewarding when patients are pleased with the way everything went. We have created a spa-like experience!” Since they realize that the cost of dental care can be an issue for some, they try their best to keep fees down and accept most forms of insurance. They also pride themselves on standing behind their work and caring about the families that have been loyal to them for years. Dr. Reinhold has patients she saw as children who are now bringing in their own children! It’s part of what gives them job satisfaction.

“I think it’s

important that the

people who come here get a good experience. That’s what really

matters to all of us.”

“Linden Hills Dentistry is in a wonderful neighborhood,” says Dr. Hinke. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes. Residents are very supportive of the small business district and are grateful for it. “We put our stake in the ground by living here and working here; we live less than three blocks away from the office,” says Dr. Hinke. “It’s a privilege to work and live in this neighborhood, and we have no regrets at all!” Dr. Hinke and Dr. Reinhold share more than a career in dentistry. Married for 31+ years, their philosophy is to stay active when not in the office. They both work out several days a week and try to stay as fit and healthy as possible. “We both actively try to engage in physical fitness and diversify that with as many things as we possibly can,” says Dr. Reinhold.

“It’s been a big part of our lives, and we have three children who are now adults who are all equally healthy. As a family, when we were able to travel, it always includes fitness.” The Linden Hills Dentistry team has also implemented Team Challenges throughout the year to help improve their individual well-being. Of course - diet, exercise, hydration, mindfulness, and relationships are all pillars of good health. “People can feel very comfortable and very safe coming here. We have created an experience that will put a smile on everyone’s face when they walk out the door,” says Dr. Hinke. “Please don’t hesitate to call us and experience the Linden Hills Dentistry difference.” Please visit lindenhillsdentistry.com and that will provide you with complete information of who they are and why.

A Love Letter to Condiments ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GENNA MARKS

Harissa and Chermoula are both condiments from North Africa. Harissa, a spicy, smoky, pepper paste that is so vibrantly red, it stains anything it encounters. It’s extremely versatile too. It’s great with yogurt, on a burger, in tomato sauce, etc. I love to add honey to it and use it as a glaze for seafood or chicken. Chermoula, an extremely herbaceous, citrusy, lively condiment that is warmed by spices that are reminiscent of the region, pairs so well with seafood. It is not to be mistaken, harissa and chermoula are the star of this dish, not the supporting act.

ingredients

Honey Harissa Shrimp with Chermoula Quinoa

• 1lb shrimp, peeled and deveined • 1C quinoa, rinsed • 1 ¾ C chicken stock • 1C parsley, chopped • 1C cilantro, chopped • 1 garlic clove, grated • 1Tsp cumin • 1Tsp paprika • 1Tsp turmeric • ¼ Tsp coriander • Tbsp lemon zest • 5Tbsp lemon juice • 2Tbsp harissa • ¼ C honey • Olive oil • Salt • Black pepper

directions Consider this a love letter to condiments. They are a workhorse in the kitchen with little recognition. When a dish has something that you can’t quite put your finger on, it’s a condiment. It’s something acidic to something rich. It’s spice for something bland.

30

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE ARGE

1. To make the harissa honey sauce, whisk together honey, harissa, 2Tbsp lemon juice, ¼ C olive oil and 1Tsp salt. Whisk until combined. Take ¼ C

of the sauce and marinate the shrimp for 30 minutes. 2. Combine quinoa and chicken stock in a stock pot over high heat. Add in a pinch of salt and bring to a boil. Once boiling, bring the heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 15 minutes. After, turn the heat off, keep covered for an additional 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside. 3. To make the chermoula, combine parsley, cilantro, 3Tbsp lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, cumin, paprika, turmeric, coriander, ¾ Tsp salt, ½ Tsp black pepper, and 1C olive oil together. Set it aside. 4. Add 3Tbsp of olive oil to a sauté pan over high heat. Once the pan is hot, add the shrimp, sprinkle with salt, and sear the shrimp on both sides. The honey chars a bit, giving a darker color to the shrimp. Once the shrimp has turned opaque internally and gone white with pink accents, they are ready. I like to take the remaining harissa honey that wasn’t used for the marinade and coat the cooked shrimp in it. 5. Take ½ C of the chermoula and mix it in with quinoa. 6. To assemble the dish, take the quinoa and plate it on the bottom and top with the harissa honey shrimp. Adding more harissa glaze and chermoula on top as you see fit. Enjoy! LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
