LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy Holidays!
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Sarah Knieff | sarah.knieff@citylifestyle.com
I can’t believe it is already year end. Even though it flew up fast, I hope December 2023 finds you looking back at a great year filled with fond memories. The Minneapolis Lakes team collaborated on many projects, shared great stories, dipped back into hosting events, and experienced the community with open eyes, ears and hearts. For December, we wanted to focus a bit on giving back. Each year, our magazines are able to nominate families in need of extra assistance. Although City Lifestyle cannot help everyone who needs it, this campaign continues to grow annually and make small strides in communities across the nation. If you feel there are people in need in our community, I encourage you to scan the QR code to nominate. For this issue, we connected with a few destinations that are great to visit for the whole family. Grand Hand Gallery in St. Paul being one of them, we asked their artists to share a bit of what inspires their work, and what art means to them personally. I know many of you have driven by The Museum of Russian Art over the years and have wondered what exactly is inside. If you have not visited yet, this special gem of a gallery does not disappoint! Masha, Michelle and Mary took our team through three levels of rotating exhibits, incredible art and a fabulous gift shop. The holidays often incorporate gathering with family and friends to enjoy a good meal or a special recipe. Kowalski’s shares their high standards when it comes to sourcing food and hopes to pass along the same quality that their very own family shares at home. We close this December issue with last-minute gift ideas from Northland Visions. If it’s something unique you seek, they carry specialty food items, art, jewelry, stationery, puzzles, candles, and many more goodies that are perfect for this holiday or any year-round occasion.

EXPERIENCE ART, HISTORY AND CULTURE FROM LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY COLLECTIONS, EXHIBITS, AND EVENTS THAT ENLIGHTEN AND ENGAGE Starting out in 2002 with a donation of seven paintings, The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) in Minneapolis is now a popular destination housing a collection of more than 13,000 items. On average, about 25,000 people a year travel from all over Minnesota, the U.S. and overseas to visit. Although the art is that of Muscovite Russia, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and its former republics (more than 95% of the collections originate from Russia within its 1991 borders), the museum itself is an independent American 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Raymond and Susan Johnson, collectors from Minnesota. Back then, the Johnsons owned what was thought to be the largest privately held collection of Soviet-era realist paintings outside the borders of the former Soviet Union. The museum was born out of a desire to create a legacy honoring Russian art of the Soviet period with a mission of promoting education, enlightenment, and engagement through art. “Russian history is very interesting, but I don't feel like everyone knows about Russian art, history and culture, so this museum is a point of discovery,” says Michelle Massey, director of public programs and marketing. “The counterpoint to that is for many Russian immigrants, this is their culture being expressed in an American museum with an American perspective.” A former church, the renovated historic building is itself a work of art with its Spanish Colonial Mission architecture and soaring arched ceilings. The exhibits change throughout the year, and there’s always something new to see in the museum’s four galleries. Over the years, visitors have seen Soviet-era posters, nonconformist art from the post-WWII Soviet era, holiday ornaments, 20th-century nesting dolls, collections of early 20th-century peasant woodwork crafts, collections of figurines from major Soviet porcelain factories, postage stamps and currency, lacquer boxes, samovars, folk clay toys, and more. The TMORA Shop is also a favorite among visitors. Describing itself as “A Shop Wrapped in Mystery Inside an Enigma,” it’s filled with select items from small artisans and designers, European markets, small publishing houses, and even an antique dealer in Ukraine. “I like to think of the shop as an extension of the museum,” says Mary Berg, director of retail. “It reflects the design, the fine and folk arts, literature and culinary culture of Russia, and the former Soviet Union.”

One of the main things she often sees and hears in the shop is how emotional people become when viewing the exhibitions. “They make comments about how they have never seen anything like this,” she says. Adds Michelle, “We also, of course, hear the great love for those masterpieces, the paintings that the collection was founded on and the museum was founded with.” All proceeds from the shop support the mission and educational programming at the museum, and TMORA hosts these unique and interesting events at the museum year-round. “We're known for hosting a significant number of classical music concerts in the main gallery at the museum, which in itself is quite unique,” says Michelle. “The Museum has beautiful acoustics. We bring in a Steinway piano and feature internationally renowned musicians. “In addition, the Museum features theatrical performances, operas, Art After Dark parties, children’s story times, lectures, folk singing, demonstrations of artisan work in TMORA Shop, and more.” This year, its biggest holiday show ever will take place in the Main Gallery. “It’s called The Wintertime Carnival: Traditions of Old,” says museum curator, Dr. Maria Zavialova. “Another holiday-season exhibition will be The Art of Leon Hushcha. Leon is a renowned Minnesotan artist of Ukrainian descent whose work we displayed before.” Private parties such as weddings, corporate receptions, and dinners can also be held here. These celebrations take place in the art-filled galleries, which can hold up to 250 people. Like many nonprofit institutions, TMORA needs the support of those in and outside of the community in order to continue to offer these special collections, exhibitions, and experiences. One way to show support is by becoming a member. “People can become members of the museum for a really reasonable cost,” says Michelle. “That gives folks the opportunity to come to every exhibition for free and to receive discounts in the shop and for events. They're part of the institution when they support us in this way.” Volunteers are also helpful. Attending special events is another fun way to show support and at the same time enjoy a wonderful day or evening out. In December, there’s something for everyone, including these amazing offerings: • December 2 – Opening Reception: Leon Hushcha and Olga Volchkova. • December 3 – Rachmaninoff 150: Helen Chang-Haertzen, Richard Belcher, & Denis Evstuhin in Concert. • December 8 – The Seductive World of Anna Karenina: Tolstoy the Private Man and the Inception of a Masterpiece, Presentation by Anna Barker, Ph.D. • December 16 – Story Time in the Gallery. • December 21 – Free Thursday Night on Winter Solstice. For more information on the museum, located at 5500 Stevens Ave., go to TMORA.org or call 612-821-9045.

KOWA L SKI'S From Our Family to Yours
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE
Maybe you are a gifted home chef, whose culinary feats evoke hushed murmurs of wonderment from your dinner guests. Or perhaps your many blessings do not include an aptitude for cooking. Either way, your deeply ingrained sense of Midwestern hospitality compels you to serve only the best to your friends and loved ones each holiday season. What luck! Kowalski's, the family-owned Twin Cities grocery chain which curates a selection of the finest foods the world has to offer, is right here in Minneapolis. Whether you seek superlative ingredients – or intend to play host or hostess without dulling a single Wüsthof – Kowalski’s makes entertaining a piece of cake. “There are high standards, and then there are our standards,” said Mary Anne Kowalski. “If you find it at Kowalski’s, you can rest assured that we have personally traveled to wherever it was grown, raised or prepared and approved of everything we saw. These are products we are proud to serve to our own families.” “Exercising our standards has taken an incredible amount of work,” said Kris Kowalski Christiansen, Mary Anne’s daughter who has worked in the family business since she was old enough to operate a till. “When we’re unable to find a product that meets them, we create it in-house. That’s why we have our own bakery, hired our own bread maker, and even began cultivating our own yeast. When a bread has the words ‘cinnamon’ and ‘raisin’ in its name, it simply cannot fall short of perfection. “Most of our recipes originated in our family or team members’ home kitchens. We have my nephew Boyd Oase to thank for our stuffing recipe. Terri Bennis, our chief merchandising officer, came up with our Salsa di Parma – a spread made with parmesan and asiago that complements nearly anything. Many of our recipes are created in-house by Rachael Perron, our culinary and branding director. And my father’s Aunt Nettie has our undying gratitude for creating our potato salad, a perennial favorite at our deli.”
Mary and Kris.

Here I must editorialize. If the Nobel Committee ever comes to its senses and begins awarding accolades for potato salad, Aunt Nettie would join her rightful place among Einstein and Mother Teresa. For hers is ambrosial potato salad: a fitting side to any Olympian’s burger. The recipe should be launched into deep space for the benefit of alien civilizations. In case I’m not making myself clear, I like Aunt Nettie’s potato salad. “We recognize when we can’t recreate a recipe without sacrificing some part of its charm,” said Mary Anne. “For example, my neighbor’s tiramisu only tastes best when it comes from her own kitchen, so hers is the only kitchen our tiramisu will ever come from.

“Whether we’re partnering with a local producer or one abroad, we insist on knowing everything about their process. In addition to ensuring the quality of their product, we want to make certain they’re paying fair wages and treating animals ethically. That attention to detail has made Kowalski’s the first retailer to achieve Leader status in the James Beard Foundation's Smart Catch Seafood Sustainability Program, as well as the first multi-location retailer in the country to offer USDA Choice and Prime beef that is Certified Humane by the Humane Farm Animal Care organization.” “I’m not a great cook,” confessed Kris. “I’d like to think you wouldn’t be disappointed if I cooked for you, but I admit I can’t hold a candle to the collective talent of team members. But you know what? So much the better. Instead of mashing and basting and sautéing all day, I get to serve a premade Christmas dinner without feeling like I’m cheating my guests.” Kowalski's inedible wares are no less incredible. Their European-style flower shop offers gorgeous arrangements of brilliant things grown by Len Busch Roses of Plymouth, and their gift department showcases many local artisans’ best work. Give your loved ones jewelry by Art 'n Soul, scented candles by rareESSENCE, outdoorsy apparel by Waggle Golf, leisurewear by Blind Havoc, or the world’s softest socks by World’s Softest Socks this holiday season, and they’ll wonder what they could have done to deserve so much affection. “Knowing we are part of so many holiday celebrations is always a wonderful feeling,” said Mary Anne. “Thank you, [Minneapolis], for having us!” kowalskis.com

ART IS MEANT TO BE SHARED MEET FOUR UNIQUE ARTISTS FROM THE GRAND HAND GALLERY
WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU? The whimsical flower sculptures I create ultimately become a reflection of the viewer. I have a degree in horticulture and am inspired by the natural world around us.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART?

NOLAN PROHASKA GLASS ARTIST

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE? In the hot glass studio, I make lots of individual parts. Once they cool they get sandblasted and acid-etched to give the glass a matte finish. I then assemble those parts to complete a sculpture.
ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF

[The class] “Introduction to Glass” with Jim Engebretson sent me to a career in glass art. “If you spend enough time in the glass studio you will learn how to blow glass,” he’d say, “making it your own (ideas and artwork) is the hard part.” By combining my love for plants and glass I feel like I’m achieving that.
JEFFREY BABINEAU RECL AIMED WOOD ARTIST WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU? Art is something I’ve always appreciated and shared with people I love. It has been a vehicle for me to connect with family, friends, and the community. I work with sustainable materials gathered on the shores of the Great Lakes and rivers, combined with reclaimed redwood and cedar.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE? My process started years ago with the collection of driftwood. I love spending time wandering in nature along the shores of the Great Lakes and rivers. I noticed that each piece of driftwood had its own personality. As my collection grew, I began to think of ways driftwood could be combined to create something meaningful to share with others. The process of gathering, envisioning, and assembling driftwood to create a tree has developed over the past eight years.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?
Jeffrey Babineau
I love the solitude of wandering the shores, collecting the driftwood, and creating something that returns the wood to its original form - a tree. I’m inspired by the life cycles of nature. A tree lives a life, it then dies and falls apart. Through curiosity, care, and a desire to share nature’s beauty with others, it can live again. My first tree was seven feet tall which I made for my family for the Holidays. Every year I assemble it for the season and it gives me much joy. CONTINUED >

RUTH JOHNSON O I L PA I N T E R
WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU? Art is really a language as is speech, literature, music, dance, etc. Doing art is as old as humanity and is another way to convey thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and convictions. It’s a way to “play” with these elements. Oil painting is my favorite [form] of art. I love the many ways oil behaves and its luminosity.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART? As a child, I was especially encouraged by my grandpa, which is still a fond memory. Also, lifelong friends and my other family have been there and kept me going more than they could realize. I would say that co-existing with others who are in similar pursuits is a lovely way to find yourself in your life’s work.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE?
Ruth Johnson
28
I NSP IR E D BY | A RTS + CULTURE
I begin by stretching linen canvas on multiple sizes of stretcher bars and priming them with several layers of gesso. I like to start each intended image with a wash drawing, which is then probably altered many times during the work on a painting. Sometimes, I’m unhappy with how a painting is going in the evening, but come back the next day and find, almost without being aware of what changes were being made at the time, that things worked. When a painting finally seems completed, I construct my own frames.
JOEL NICHOLS FINE FURNITURE CRAFTER
WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU? I think art should be incorporated into all facets of our lives. Civic projects like bridges and parks should be approached as functional art installations. After a few generations of that, you end up in a city like Paris. In your home, your art investments will also be enjoyed for life versus mass produced items that end up in a landfill after a few years. Joel Nichols
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MEDIUM?
Joel Nichols
I work mainly in wood but do use metal in many of my projects. I use a lot of reclaimed wood. Time adds another layer of beauty. Some woods are downright boring, but you give them a job to do for 100 years and they become very interesting storytellers.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART? After college, I was working for my dad remodeling an old building in Minneapolis into a restaurant. The building's owner wasn't happy with the architect's design for the bar and asked if I'd like to design and build it. Not sure why he asked me but I felt like I could do it so I did. The bar turned out great and the owner loved it. That was my first commission and really ignited my passion for designing and building beautiful things.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION? I really enjoy pushing myself. Pretty much everything I make is one-off. Each piece is a journey that endears itself to me. I burn the scraps from my projects to heat my house and enjoy pulling them from my wood rack and remembering vividly the table or chair or whatever that produced it. It's like when you travel you can remember every day of a trip but yet can't recall what you had for lunch earlier that same day. I travel every day in my small shop. I'm very grateful for that. thegrandhandgallery.com 619 Grand Ave., Saint Paul | 651-312-1122

Giving Campaign
2023 38
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
