LIFESTYLE LETTER
Every Day is a Gift As the calendar winds down for 2023 and the holidays rapidly approach, November is a time to reflect on what we are all thankful for. I am sure that could look quite different for every person, but perhaps much of it might be the same. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Although these last days of the year can sometimes be hectic, I look forward to spending as much quality time as possible with loved ones while striving to live by the words “Every day is a gift.” I feel blessed to have great family and friends, our beautiful Minnesota seasons (even if that means cold & snow), the wonderful community of Minneapolis Lakes, and the opportunities to support our partners, local businesses and non-profits through this publication. In this issue, we highlight Brandyn Negri and her journey back into real estate. Brandyn is a local lakes resident who truly loves every bit of living and working in our unique area. Smiles are one of the most important, universal messages a human can express. They can transcend language, light up a room, and change someone’s day. Our team spotlights Dr. Rosemary Lelich, owner of Family Orthodontics, to learn more about what she finds most gratifying in her work and hear from the happy generations of patients who trust her with their health. It’s the season for hosting and dining, and we’ve also included a lovely idea for a tablescape and journal prompts to help keep days balanced. We've also included a gift guide if you are starting your holiday shopping. Hopefully, this provides inspiration for this wonderful and special season. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season, as we prepare to gather with those who are special to us, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Wishing you and yours health and happiness this Thanksgiving!

JOURNEY GOING BACK TO REAL ESTATE AFTER A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT AND OVER 10 YEARS OFF ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY MURPHY BYRNE
Life is full of ups and downs. Some people even compare it to a rollercoaster. There are the highest of highs when it feels like nothing can go wrong and then there are the lowest of lows where it feels like the whole world is crashing down. But according to real estate agent Brandyn Negri, life is a journey that is worth every roadblock and gentle cruise. “People always ask me how I got back into real estate after over 10 years being out of it, a kidney transplant, retiring from teaching yoga, and ending a professional coaching business,” Brandyn says. “I mean I have lived a lot of life since I started selling real estate in 1997, but my intuition called me back.” Brandyn started her career as a realtor in 1997. She jointly established a high-end brokerage in Sarasota, FL, which later evolved into a Sothebys’ franchise. Upon expanding the business to the Twin Cities in 2006, she relocated to Minneapolis. “Real estate is such a fun way to connect with people,” Brandyn explains. “I get to help first-time homebuyers choose their dream and others downsize or relocate to other parts of the country. Being of service to others through this process is fulfilling to me.” Everything was going very well for Brandyn, but a year after she moved to Minneapolis, she got the devastating news that she needed a kidney transplant. “I have a genetic condition called Polycystic Kidney Disease and for me, that meant I needed to get a [new, healthy] kidney,” she says. “I was so lucky, however, that someone very special was able to donate.” That special person was her boyfriend – now husband – Mario. “I have so much gratitude for him and his family for supporting his decision,” Brandyn says. “I mean we were just dating at the time, so that’s such an incredible and selfless choice to make. I was still the owner of the Sotheby’s franchise at the time too, and all the people who worked for and with me were extremely supportive. Also, the team at Mayo Clinic – they were amazing. I was very lucky to have incredible people on all fronts of my life there to be with me.” Although the transplant went very well, the whole ordeal stood as a wake-up call for Brandyn. “Once my surgery was over, I decided to focus on my physical health,” she says. “In 2008, I sold my shares of the real estate business and started doing more things for just me and that included yoga. I found that it relaxed me – mind, body and soul – and that I felt so good after doing it.” After about a year of downtime, Brandyn thought it was time to get back into the professional world. “I agreed to a two-year non-compete when I sold my shares so I couldn’t sell real estate as a result,” she says. “And to be honest, I didn’t really want to. As a result of

this and completing a yoga teaching training program, I opened Sigh Yoga + Boutique in South Minneapolis during 2009. This was an incredible time building a community with other yoga teachers. I found immense joy in it, but the restricted studio space became an obstacle to our growth. Consequently, my husband and I resolved to close the business at the conclusion of our lease.” From there, Brandyn was recruited by Modo Yoga to teach and train. “I was so happy to be able to continue working in the yoga industry,” she says. “The last 5 years of teaching and training at Modo Yoga, I started professionally coaching small business owners and employees at Sportech in Elk River.” Brandyn continued both avenues for many years, finding joy in building relationships and helping others. However, just this past year, she started to feel burnt out. “I wasn’t feeling fulfilled anymore,” she says. “Last year, I was in an online writing class through The Loft and I chose to write about the time in my life when I was in real estate and had the kidney transplant. When I received feedback from the class, so many people said that it sounded like I had done a lot of healing
from a traumatic event in my life. It started to feel like a full-circle moment for me. “I had also just sat down with a friend where I shared about my lack of fulfillment and she had mentioned that I should go back into real estate. I kind of pushed the idea off, but slowly things started to align.” So in 2022, Brandyn went back to school and got her real estate license, and after very little deliberation, signed with Coldwell Banker Realty in Minneapolis. “Coldwell was a no-brainer for me,” she says. “I met with the team there and felt so assured. I trust them so much. I also work at the lakes office, which is super close to my home.” For Brandyn, the transition from yoga back to real estate has been exciting and humbling. “The market has changed,” she says. “I’ve come back in post-pandemic and everything is slower than before. It has underscored for me the importance of maintaining consistency in my daily routine. Each day involves a blend of prospecting, marketing, attending appointments, branding, and attending to my physical and mental well-being. I know from being in the business before that it takes about three years before things start to ramp up. I’m so happy to be back.” Brandyn herself recently moved into a new home after building it on a 1950s foundation by the Lake of the Isles. “We had a vision to remodel the home, but the problem was that it had a very small floor plan that we couldn’t really work around. So we hired an architect to completely rebuild the house. We kept the original foundation and made everything else the way we wanted. We established two living areas, one on the ground level and another one upstairs. Our love for natural light and the outdoors inspired us to incorporate numerous floor-to-ceiling windows to invite nature inside. Our two French bulldogs also love our new deck. Everyone is very happy with the results.” As Brandyn gears up for her one-year mark back in real estate, she is thankful for all the support she has received from her Coldwell Banker staff, family, friends and coach. “I’m grateful for my mom,” she says. “She passed away suddenly this year and I’m so thankful for everything she has given me. I am also grateful for my sisters, my family, Mario and my in-laws. I have felt so loved during all these ups and downs. I’m ready for what is to come with my career and my personal life.” If interested in having Brandyn be your next real estate agent, email her at brandyn.negri@cbrealty.com or call 612-382-8736.

Dr. Rosemary and team.
A GRATEFUL ORTHODONTIST HELPS GENERATIONS OF PATIENTS FIND THEIR SMILES
“I’m incredibly grateful to be an orthodontist,” Dr. Rosemary Lelich says, owner of Family Orthodontics in St. Louis Park. “I love the patient interactions and seeing all the families come in. I’m able to treat everyone from the parent and child to their extended relatives.” Dr. Rosemary is board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and a Platinum Plus Invisalign Provider. She attended the University of Pennsylvania for dental school and pursued further training at the University of Minnesota to complete her orthodontic specialty residency. She took over Family Ortho in June of 2020 after working there as an associate for several years. “Dr. Angela Ross, [previous owner], built a wonderful practice with an exceptional reputation,” Dr. Rosemary says. “After 4 years of working and treating patients together, we had a serendipitous and smooth transition for which I could not be more grateful.” Now as owner, Dr. Rosemary continues to do what she loves most; helping people find their true smiles and feel confident enough to show it off. “It’s incredibly gratifying to see patients’ final results,” she says. “We use the latest technology and offer clear, digitally customized braces, and Phase I interceptive treatments for all ages. Some patients, adults and teens alike, are more confident and smile more after their treatment, which is so rewarding to see.” Ownership has also allowed Dr. Rosemary to find an even deeper level of gratitude for her profession and her patients.

“I really get to bond with people,” she explains. “I look at my relationship with patients as a twoway street,” she says. “I’m so thankful for my patients that support us. They give back to my business, my employees and me, so I in turn have created strong connections with local families, schools and organizations. I love being involved beyond just my practice.” She currently leads a peer study group with Spear Education and serves as the Education Chair on the Minnesota Board of Orthodontics. With all the support her business has received, Dr. Rosemary has been able to start expanding – everything from the building to a new associate doctor. “Our building is currently under construction to enlarge the existing structure,” she explains. “I’m super excited about this because we will be able to help even more people. Construction will realistically be finished next spring and we are staying open during it all. “I have also been able to hire a new associate and they start this fall. I am beyond thankful for them and looking forward to where this takes the practice. It’s just really exciting times over here and I couldn’t be more grateful for all the patients that continue to support us.” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Ravi & Nichole Ramalingam.
Now let’s hear from those supportive patients. COUPLE RAVI & NICHOLE RAMALINGAM WHAT SERVICE DID YOU RECEIVE? We both did Invisalign.
WHAT WAS THE PROCESS LIKE? Very smooth process. They’re incredibly professional. They really have their act together with the ability to schedule appointments on a smartphone or by calling. They’re flexible, able to squeeze me in when my schedule changes. And, what I like best, the appointments are remarkably quick. It’s as if they’re waiting for me – seat me promptly (almost immediately) and get me in/out within 15 minutes usually. They are completely dialed-in. I also appreciate their transparency. The process is very understandable. They take all the fuss out of it. And, as I mentioned above, I’m not sure I’ve had to sit in the waiting room for more than 1 minute for my myriad appointments. In a way, I almost look forward to going there. In a world where everything feels like a hassle, Family Orthodontics’ efficiency, professionalism and results are worth every penny.
HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR RESULTS? Perfect. My wife’s process went very quickly. Mine took longer. They’re very patient with me, as I’m sure that my account is quickly becoming a negative margin proposition for them. Dr. Lelich is the best. We have been patients for about two years – it was much quicker for my wife.

JENNIFER CHENOWETH AND FAMILY WHAT SERVICE(S) DID YOU RECEIVE? I got Invisalign to fix some tooth pain I was experiencing. My teeth moved after having braces many years ago and this was causing my bite to be out of alignment, and creating some consistent pressure on one tooth. My kids received expanders and braces to fix crossbites.
collaborated with my kids’ dentists to share information so that everyone was in alignment on the approach. I really appreciated the comprehensive nature of the service. They are also very close to our house, which makes it convenient to get to appointments with a busy family. My kids were patients before me – they were referred by our dentist – so it was a natural fit for me to go there as well.
HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR RESULTS? HOW DID THIS PROCESS GO FOR YOU? We love the team at Family Orthodontics! Dr. Lelich was thorough to explain what our goals were with the treatment, as well as timelines and costs. They even

November has always stood as the month to pause, take in your surroundings, and see all that you are thankful for. Many of us get so caught up in the day-to-day chaos that taking little moments for gratitude comes few and far between, but finding time to do so is important. By taking notice of everything that adds positivity to your life, you will gain a new perspective and your days will be that much sweeter. Perhaps you are thankful for; those around you who spread light and happiness, health and wellness, a fresh start to each day, snuggly mornings with a pet, the smile of a child, that first sip of coffee, the symphony of crickets singing at night, a good book, the warm hug of a loved one, or the constant, steady presence of someone dear. This sentence could truly go on for miles, but what matters most is what is on your list. What are you thankful for? As you have been reading this, what has come to mind? Or better yet, who has come to mind? Everyone has those special people that make them feel appreciated and add nothing but value to their lives. Who is that for you? As you think of these people, you may want to show your appreciation for all that they do. That’s why we created this special gift guide – to encourage you to share your thankfulness with those you love. CONTINUED >

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.
The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.
The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.
The French Country Table Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. The Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MI N N E A P O L I S L A KE S
