It Looks Like We Made It!

Looking back at 2022, Minneapolis Lakes has covered a fair amount of ground. One of the craziest parts of delivering a monthly publication is how far we work ahead, and how fast the months melt away. Year-end is a time for reflection and appreciating everything that has come before this, as well as setting intentions for the year ahead. Our team is already working on exciting things for 2023 and we can’t wait to share them with you! There is a new movie theater back in town. Our team toured the recently renovated Edina Theatre and spoke with co-owner, Michelle Mann, on what's new and why going to the movies continues to be a special experience. With its Instagrammable throwbacks from The Shining and the heated recliners, this is a holiday destination spot. We spoke with Ellyn Wolfenson, a true lover of the Minneapolis Lakes area. Coming from a background in nursing, Ellyn applies some of those early caregiving skills to her real estate career in order to help families buy and sell homes. In addition to a vast knowledge of the neighborhoods, Ellyn also enjoys the benefits of actually living in the area. David Voller, Clinic Administrator at Shriners Children’s Hospital, shares a bit about their 100th year in the Twin Cities, advancements in treatment, giving back to community, and the promise to continue assisting families here in Minnesota and beyond. Their team works together to bring customized plans, hope, and healing to children in need of specialized care and rehabilitation. We end the year with information on our giving-back initiative. City Lifestyle, our franchise leader, started this campaign nationwide in hopes that it will grow and serve those in need. If you are aware of families or people who are struggling, please nominate them. Or, please remember to be kind and give in other ways if you are able. Fred Rogers said, “All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors…”

MOVIES AND MORE ARE AVAILABLE AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED EDINA THEATRE

For movie lovers in and around Edina, there’s now an extra special place to indulge in the magic of movies. What used to be the dated Edina Theatre, showing mostly independent art movies, was acquired by Mann Theatres and underwent a total renovation. “We upgraded everything,” says Michelle Mann, whose grandfather Marvin started the business in 1936 with his brother Ted. The auditoriums have brand new screens, new sound, sound panels, and for a truly luxurious experience, heated recliners. Today, Mann Theatres has nine locations in Minnesota, including its newest in Edina. Michelle and Michael’s father, Steve, actually owned the theater in the late seventies and early eighties. When the venue had to shut its doors during COVID, and the then-owners decided not to reopen, it was a great opportunity to bring it back into the family. For fans of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the upstairs bar area may look very familiar. “We walked upstairs and thought, wow, the way the structure and architecture is, it would work perfectly to recreate The Gold Room,” says Michelle. Most of the patrons recognize it, but for those who don’t, they’re just wowed by its beauty. The Manns also created Instagrammable physical installations such as the ghost twins holding hands at the end of the hallway, and an old typewriter just like the one Jack Nicholson uses to type his novel on in the movie. The full-service bar has popular beers on tap and a variety of wines. “We also have six crafted cocktails that are specific to The Shining, such as the Red Rum,” she says. You can watch the iconic movie on one of the theater’s four screens, but there are also plenty of other choices. They are still deciphering what is going to be most popular, so they’ve started to dabble into different genres such as romantic comedies, family movies, independent films and fantasy. What most people don’t know is that movie theaters cannot just get access to any movie they want. “We have a film buyer who has relationships with all the studios,” says Michelle. “He negotiates with them as far as what films we play and where they’re placed. If a film company doesn’t feel that it will play well here, the answer is no. He then negotiates for us.” Of course, the ability to stream movies changed the theater industry even before COVID hit, but since then, watching films at home has become much more common. But, says Michelle, small screens just don’t do movies, especially cinematic movies, justice. “The new Top Gun movie is a great example. It was made two years ago and Tom Cruise could have put it

to streaming, but he decided not to since this is a film that has to be seen in a movie theater where the community comes together and watches it together. “It just shows now that it’s still amazing to come to a movie theater, and there’s nothing like seeing a movie in an actual theater. Sitting in an auditorium with a screen bigger than life along with incredible sound - you cannot get that at home.” Also, when you’re in a movie theater, there are no distractions like there are at home. It’s a real escape from reality, at least for a couple of hours. With everything being digital now, viewers get a crisp, clear picture and that amazing surround sound. And don’t forget the popcorn. “In Edina, I’d say we go through about 40 or 50 bags of
18

popcorn seed a week, and these bags are massive. In some of our theaters, that goes up to a hundred bags during the holidays.” Most of Mann’s locations, including Edina, also offer hot food items such as chicken, pizza, and pretzel bites. In addition to working in the family business, Michelle is a single mom of a toddler whom she calls the light of her life. Although she doesn’t allow him any screen time yet, Michelle does have her own favorite movies. “Because I’m a singer, I love musical films such as What’s Love Got To Do With It and Selena. I also love when Harry Met Sally and Man on Fire.” To learn more, visit manntheatres.com/theatre/89/Edina-4. 3911 W 50th St., Edina. (952) 926-1575.

Transitioning from being a medical and surgical nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital to a Realtor® may seem like a tremendous change, but for Ellyn Wolfenson, it was another opportunity to use her skills in a different way. Almost 18 years later and now with Coldwell Banker – Minneapolis Lakes office, she believes she made the right move. “One of the reasons I flourished is because there are really a lot of similarities between both careers,” she says. “You’re taking care of people in a life experience they don’t have very often, and it’s not something they’re extremely knowledgeable about. So there’s an educational aspect to it, but there’s a little bit of caregiving too. There’s also friendship and kindness, and those are many of the attributes that a nurse has.” Ellyn can also stay calm under pressure and when emotions run high, as they often do when dealing with real estate transactions. “People react very differently,” she says. “Some are hysterical when the moving van pulls up and others just can’t wait to get to the next adventure. Then there’s everything in between.” While she enjoys the invigorating business part of real estate, she says what she really loves is the relationship part of it. “My tagline is, ‘It’s all about relationships,’ and I really mean that. I love helping first-time home buyers. I love helping people who are leaving their family homes and transitioning to a condo. These life passages are very interesting to me.” Ellyn also stays in touch with many of her clients and attends many of their life events such as weddings, christenings, and bar mitzvahs. Newlyweds she sold to years ago are now looking for a bigger house to start their families. Some of the children who remember her
selling to their parents are now contacting her to find their own homes. “You develop a trust with people and they see that you’re not just doing this for a minute, you’re doing it for a long time,” she says. “It becomes very multigenerational and it just couldn’t be more interesting. I consider it a gift when somebody invites me into their life to help buy or sell a house.” Although she does business all over Minnesota, a huge asset Ellyn has on her side is being very familiar with the Minneapolis Lakes area. “I was raised in the neighborhood. My parents lived here until a few years ago, and now I’m back. I have tremendous knowledge of the Lakes area and have a special place in my heart for Linden Hills and Southwest Minneapolis because it’s where I grew up.” Ellyn says that Minnesota is like a magnet. People grow up here and they sometimes go away for a certain number of years, but they always seem to come back. “I think it’s because the Twin Cities is just such a family-centric kind of place. My four children all came back, and of course, I’m thrilled to pieces.” She also has six grandchildren and having them close makes it easy for her to dote on them. “There’s retail here, there are restaurants, trails, and biking,” says Ellyn. “There’s diversity and culture, and baseball fields, and kids playing in the parks. There’s the quaintness of a small-town feel, but there’s the cosmopolitan piece of a sophisticated city. It’s a marvelous place to live.” She also loves the walkability of her current neighborhood. “I moved from Edina to Minneapolis about four years ago and take advantage of this walkability.

“My tagline is, ‘It’s all about relationships,’ and I really mean that. I love helping first-time home buyers. I love helping people who are leaving their family homes and transitioning to a condo. These life passages are very interesting to me.” From where I live, I can walk to my office. Unless I’m getting a ton of groceries, I walk to the co-op. I walk to Sunnyside Gardens to buy a gift and to Turtle Bread to get a muffin. I really try to live the way I think the community wants us to live.” Her husband, Mick Belzer, is about to retire as medical director at Hennepin County Medical Center, where he has worked for 35 years. “That will be a new reality for us,”

says Ellyn. “My work is very important to me, but I’m also a family-first kind of person. There are words I live by, and it was my dad who said them to me - ‘Fall in love with your family; don’t fall in love with your work.’ And so, while I love what I do, I love my family more and I’ve managed to find a great balance.” To find out more about Ellyn, or if you’re interested in buying or selling a home, contact Ellyn at (612) 644-3033.

100 Years of Hope and Giving UP-TO-DATE TREATMENTS, RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL CHILDREN ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
Shriners International, founded in New York City in 1872, is an organization composed solely of master masons, and early next year, Shriners Children’s, the healthcare organization they founded, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in the Twin Cities. Its first site, founded in 1922 in Louisiana, was focused on treating children with polio. Over the years, the institution has added many additional orthopedic services to help children with cerebral palsy, scoliosis, limb deficiencies, sports injuries, club foot, spina bifida and more. “While we do a lot of surgical care, we also have very strong physical therapy as well as occupational therapy programs,” says David Voller, the clinic administrator in its Woodbury location. “We’re also highly recognized for our prosthetic and orthotic care.” Shriners Children’s treats children up to the age of 18 and even those in utero. “When a mother has an ultrasound and the child is diagnosed as having an orthopedic condition, we actually start meeting with families right away to talk about the trajectory of that child’s life,” he says. Due to changes in how children are treated, in 2020, the hospital moved from Minneapolis to a smaller location in Woodbury. “Just like in the world of adult orthopedic care, we recognized that in
pediatrics, most of our surgical procedures are being done in an outpatient setting. So, there was a movement to a more ambulatory setting.” Also, because of advances in treatment, David explains that they’ve been able to shorten the length of stay and the course of treatment for many children. “We were able to get away from the traditional hospital environment and allow them to do more of their healing at home. Moving forward, with the advances happening now, the next generation of healthcare is about the ability to do remote monitoring and telehealth care. Instead of a child having to be driven six, eight, or even 10 hours to come here for a 30-minute appointment, it can be done virtually.” Something else they now offer and what makes them unique in the imaging world, especially for pediatrics, is the use of an EOS device. David says it provides lowdose radiation and also allows for vertical images. “For scoliosis patients, in particular, research is showing that young women who have had scoliosis will have greater odds of getting breast cancer later in life because of the higher dose imaging that was traditionally used. By using this EOS device, the belief is that studies will show that as these young women age, they will be less likely to develop breast cancer.” CONTINUED >

Its newest offering is a cranial helmet program for children who are diagnosed with plagiocephaly (flat head) as well as torticollis, a condition in which neck muscles don’t necessarily move. Before the move and pre-Covid, Shriners Children’s Twin Cities was serving about 3,300 children a year. Since then, it has hovered around 2,600. “We’re now looking to re-establish and bring those numbers back,” says David. Something very special that makes the hospital stand out is its treatment of children regardless of their ability to pay for their care. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it relies on donations in order to provide the most up-to-date care for kids without health insurance or other means. “We have one of the highest ratings for charitable donations in the industry,” he says. In addition to care, donations are also used to bring joy into children’s lives. “We have nationwide programming for events and activities for children with any kind of disability,” says David. “It allows these children to be able to do a lot of things they wouldn’t normally have the ability to do. We provide the staff and resources for camps and events that allow them to showcase their skills such as fishing, shooting or whitewater rafting. They show how their limitations or perceived limitations are not limitations at all.” The Shriners come and help staff those camps. “I had a chance this summer to go to Wisconsin where we had a camp for kids to go fishing,” he says. “We had about 40 children there and every one of them had some kind of limb deficiency. I watched these kids fish and catch some of the most beautiful trout that I’m only envious of catching. It was an absolute ball to watch them have such an awesome time.” Donations can be made all year round on its website, and the organization also holds special fundraisers throughout the year. There are many ways to get involved and support Shriners Children’s Twin Cities. From special events to volunteering to help fundraise or support patient needs and activities, there is always a way to help patients and their families receive life-changing care. With next year being its 100 anniversary, the clinic will be having some special events and programs. Look for those to be announced starting in January. “Working with a staff who are just as infatuated with supporting the kids as I am and getting to do things to help our team be successful in the work they do serving these children, it’s just a joy,” says David. FLOWERS AND GIFTS THAT DRIVE THE COLD WINTER AWAY
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Minneapolis is encased in ice. When it isn’t black as pitch, the sky is the color of brushed steel. Most of the pretty birds had the good sense to flee southward. The remaining blue jays, cardinals and finches only reveal themselves in exchange for precious sunflower seeds. Even the more colorful cars have become desaturated by thick films of road salt. For all its other blessings, this is a drab burb in December – but Kowalski’s pierces the gloom. The market is an ark filled with flowers and gifts that drive the cold winter away! “I am the gift and floral director,” said Teresa Curran. “I’ve worked in many positions throughout Kowalski’s since I was 16, and just celebrated my 20th anniversary here this year. I found my passion in the gift and floral departments, but the reason why is almost too obvious to put in your magazine article: I love gifts and flowers! “Kowalski’s is committed to offering locally grown and made products as often as we’re able. Our flowers are no exception. In 2019, we partnered with Len Busch Roses, a third-generation flower wholesaler that was founded in Plymouth in 1965. The Busch family keeps us stocked with fresh-cut alstroemeria, snapdragons, stargazer lilies, Gerbera daisies, and many other kinds of blooms all year round. We also have Gertens of Inver Grove Heights to supply us with perennials, like the mums that work so hard to keep our gardens beautiful deep into autumn, and wonderful outdoor options for the winter season as well. “Our European-style flower market’s floral designers compose gorgeous custom bouquets and arrangements for every special occasion you could name – but holiday pieces are my all-time favorite. We combine aromatic sprigs of pine, bright crimson roses and festive fruits to make one-of-a-kind arrangements that brighten up CONTINUED >

our guests’ homes. We also provide the bundles of spruce you would need to make your own cheery combination pots for your patio. “Kowalski’s gift department isn’t just located right next to our floral department because it looks great that way. It also makes it easier for our guests to pick up something special for their coworkers, friends, family and loved ones – or just for themselves, of course. “Like everything else in our store, our gifts are locally sourced as often as possible. We’re proud to feature a selection of aromatherapy products by rareESSENCE of Eden Prairie, whose essential oils are also featured in several of our scented candles. We have eye-catching jewelry by Art ‘n Soul of the Twin Cities, as well as the ever-popular Weatherguide calendar by the Freshwater Society, which is filled with the Minnesotan non-profit’s regional photography and gardening tips. “Socks always make thoughtful gifts, and they’re in high demand during the weeks leading up to the holidays. Our most popular socks are made by World’s Softest Socks. They’re certainly deserving of their name, and their fun patterns and colors are simply delightful. And as excited as your kids or grandkids would be to only receive socks on Christmas morning, we also have plenty of toys for them as well. “It’s hard to do our gift department justice without reciting a list. We have art, scarves, handbags, jackets, journals, books, greeting cards, seasonal decor, cookware, tableware, lamps, trays, kitchen gadgets, stuffed animals, pillows, loungewear and more. It’s enough to make you forget that you came to Kowalski’s to buy groceries!” Stop by Kowalski’s at 5327 Lyndale Ave South, 2440 Hennepin Avenue or 5615 Chicago Ave to do all of your holiday shopping this year. There you may also purchase gift baskets filled with gourmet foods, wines, cheeses, fruits, or those most festive things of all – meats – that you will have a hard time justifying gifting to anyone. kowalskis.com

Rich and creamy, this hot chocolate will warm you from head to toe! This extra easy recipe makes a large batch in the crockpot, ready to scoop into for your holiday events, or just let it sit on your counter over the weekend for your family to dip into on these chilly winter nights!
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
• 6 cups whole milk, OR 3 cups whole milk and 3 cups half and half • 2 -12 oz. cans evaporated milk • 2 cups heavy cream, (1 pint) • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 3 cups chocolate chips
1. Mix all the ingredients together in a 6-quart crockpot. Cook on low for 4-6 hours, stirring often the first hour, to make sure the chocolate incorporates and doesn’t burn on the bottom. 2. In the 30 minutes before serving, add large and mini marshmallows to the crockpot. They’ll get all melty and yummy! Use a ladle to serve hot chocolate into mugs, then top with all of your favorite hot chocolate toppings.

THE LOST ART OF T H A N K YO U NOTES ARTICLE AUBREY SEWELL
IN A DIGITAL WORLD OF EMAILS AND TEXTS, THE SIMPLISTIC, AND ONCE STANDARD “THANK YOU” CARD HAS FADED. Does that mean we are no longer appreciative and grateful for the nice gestures that are extended to us? Absolutely not! We are just caught up in those casual platforms of communication, that we don’t take the time to sit down and give the time and attention to craft our heartfelt thanks in a way that shows purposeful thought. The written word is proof on a page and this is valuable for so many reasons. Gratitude spurns happiness, but thankfulness is tricky; the only way it is known is if it is verbally acknowledged. Writing it down is evidence of that feeling. Putting words on a page is also more intentional than shooting off a text or email. Communicating your thanks in the common, oversimplified fashion isn’t necessarily bad, but setting aside time be “old-fashioned” with pen and paper, demonstrates the value you place on what has been done for you. Plus, handwriting is an extension of who you are as a person. It breathes your life onto the page. It exudes your voice, your spirit and your message in a way that is uniquely yours. With the holidays just around the corner, there is quite a fine line
HELPFUL “THANK YOU” TIPS Send a thank you within a week of receiving someone’s gesture Use “snail mail” Be specific: mention the particular item or action you are grateful for Be genuine Personalize it: colored writing utensils, hand-lettering, or cards made from family photos Think outside the box. If writing REALLY isn't your thing, send a video of you verbally thanking them.
between the gratefulness of Thanksgiving and the endless spending of money on the endless lists for Christmas for people who anxiously have the “gimmes.” It’s important to navigate those waters, to cultivate a giving spirit as well as an appreciative heart, and establish an attitude of thankfulness. Receiving such a novelty through the mail is both meaningful and memorable and sending a special gift like this is a blessing to both the recipient and the sender.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
