Minneapolis Lakes celebrates April as our Eco issue. We looked at a few local businesses that are doing their part in giving back to the environment and attempting to continue operations with a cognizant look at how they impact the Earth.

Otogawa-Anschel, or OA Design+Build, began their journey of Green building and remodeling in the late 90’s. Today, they continue to source materials ethically and locally while taking into account water and energy conservation as well as the environmental and community impact of their projects. Michael Anschel, founder and owner, dives into “building resilience” and shares his personal remodel of 2020.

In catching up with Megan and Mikaela Harrod, sisters and co-owners of Les Sól boutique in Linden Hills, they educated our team on their sustainable brands, why they chose their new space, and the positive impact they hope Les Sól will bring to the community.

TWO SISTERS ARE BRINGING ETHICAL CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES TO THEIR COMMUNITY

SISTERS MIKAELA AND MEGAN HARROD WANTED TO OPEN A BUSINESS THAT MIRRORED THEIR VALUES. They also wanted to bring unique and natural products from around the world to the people of Minneapolis.

Their goal came true last year with the opening of Les Sól, a boutique that focuses on sustainable and ethical women’s clothing and other merchandise that carries an endless summer vibe and are made by independent artists, designers, and small brands.

Mikaela has a Bachelor of Science degree in apparel design, which concentrated more on the technical side of the fashion industry. “I learned a lot about the ethics of the fashion industry in terms of waste and pollution,” she says.

“And there are many ways to have less of an impact. So, I am super passionate about sustainability and fashion.”

The two sisters love to travel, and seem to meet people and make friends wherever they go. “When we travel, we want to experience the place like a local, so we have our favorite boutiques, cafés, and restaurants,” says Megan. “That’s the foundation of Les Sól - all these ideas coming together in a space that is actually a true reflection of who both of us are and what we love about the world – connection, sustainability, female empowerment, social justice, and more.”

Two summers ago, when the store Mikaela was working at closed, she wasn’t sure what she was going to do next. She asked herself, “Am I going to work for another boutique and put all of my energy into someone else’s dream again, or should I just start my own?” So, she called her sister and asked her if she wanted to be involved in starting a business.

Megan, of course, said yes!

The sisters have always had a close relationship.

“Megan is 12 years my senior, and our mom is a nurse/ midwife who works really hard. Megan was like a second mom to me so we have a very close bond. And, she has an entrepreneurial spirit and was always talking about opening a business.”

“I’ve been with the U.S. Alpine Ski team for seven seasons, so I’m on the road eight months a year managing all the media and PR for them,” says Megan. “I didn’t foresee being able to open my own business CONTINUED >

anytime soon, so when my sister came to me about doing this, I said yes right away.”

Mikaela knew immediately that this new boutique would feature sustainable merchandise, and both sisters focused on making the boutique a whole lifestyle. In addition to clothing, they offer accessories, skin and body care, chocolates, candles and more.

Les Sól was originally supposed to open last April,

so when COVID-19 delayed that, the two decided to launch online first and start building momentum.

“The community is so important to us because it’s the people who make the place special” says Megan.

“That’s how we feel about Minneapolis - the people make it special.”

The physical store finally opened in September.

When they originally found the space at 4353 South Upton Avenue in Linden Hills, they felt like it fit their brand more than anywhere else they had looked. “It’s right next to Sebastian Joe’s, and it’s a great location for us from a community standpoint,” says Megan.

“The space is warm, but also minimalist.”

“Being true to ourselves is super important and will continue to be so,” says Mikaela. “We want to empower other women-owned businesses as well,

especially BIPOC owned, and uplift each other and our community.”

“I’m so proud of her, and I think it’s awesome that we can do this together,” says Megan.

The two are excited for others to see their new spring merchandise. “Spring is looking very colorful and fun with lots of patterns,” says Megan. “I think that’s what differentiates us from a lot of boutiques in Minneapolis.

Instead of a lot of straight lines and muted color blocking, we wanted to be bright and vibrant.”

The whole building is made from natural timber, explains Mikaela. “This is a sustainable way to build, and people are going back to it. There are these big beautiful locally-sourced wood columns in the store and the ceiling is timber as well.

We have this super light pink paint on the walls and concrete floors, so it has all these natural elements that are really fun and nice.”

The business is a complete family and friends affair. The interior design was done by Mikaela’s friends, and Mikaela herself built the copper fixtures that hold the clothes. Her father made the checkout counter and some of the tables, and her boyfriend and his friends made the big unique display in the center. Even Mikaela’s dog, Django, is involved. His job is to greet everyone who comes in.

“This whole opportunity would not have been possible had our family not helped us,” says Megan. “It also wouldn’t have

OTOGAWA-ANSCHEL DESIGN+BUILD+ARCHITECTURE WAS BUILT ON A DIFFERENT FOUNDATION – LITERALLY. Michael Anschel, founder and owner of the design build firm, was raised locally in the heart of Linden Hills and started his youth with music, theatre, sculpture and overseas travel to China and Japan. But, in addition to the arts, Michael was also interested in houses at a young age. As time passed, his passion for the arts paved the way for culture, creativity, awareness, and respect in the construction world, and ultimately, was woven into the DNA of OA. Building Green is their passion and cornerstone, and to say Otogawa-Anschel has a large scope when it comes to projects is an understatement. Michael explains, “OA has a deep respect for arts and the language of design. We’re creating something unique that has a distinct look. Our projects are the exploration of shape, line, light and the balance between materials used, sustainable resources, and merging it all together. You can spot an OA project.”

Green building has lost a bit of its luster in the past ten years, but Otogawa-Anschel remains committed to the original principals of the Minnesota Greenstar Program and the Living Building Challenge.

Often there is confusion surrounding what “green building” actually is and what qualifies. Michael gives a high-level explanation with “it is that large umbrella look at all of the influencing factors, including water conservation, energy conservation, resilience, sourcing of the materials, durability, embodied energy, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), the environmental and community impact of the project, and benefit for people. It’s the balance you strike between all these competing issues.”

OA’s culture is incredibly collaborative and focuses on every minute detail. The common thread for the team is curiosity; the desire to explore their portion of the craft and process in a way that’s more expressive and creative, allowing them the freedom to push project boundaries.

The carpenters are interested in the design as much as the designers and architects are interested in the construction. Out of the office, the team also shares Michael’s love of curiosity, nature, art, music and food!

He says one joins OA because “you love your craft and want to be supported in that exploration.”

OA’s largest 2020 project, which began prior to and carried on throughout the pandemic, was one Michael will not soon forget.

Documented via film by Protradecraft.com and featured on their show “Building Resilience,” the OA Team faced challenges with supply chain, separation of the team, and major building delays. To Michael it’s memorable not only because of the uncertainty and challenges his team faced, but because this particular project happens to be his personal home. He reflects that it is “Much easier to make decisions for other people. I was second guessing myself so many times. It’s a real mental exercise to step back and be objective about your own work for yourself. To build not only during Covid-19, but also layer the murder of George Floyd into it, made it emotional.”

The finished project is beautiful and boasts a lot of “firsts.” For example, innovating a 2nd gen high performance wall which combine a rigid insulation on the outside, a spray foam on the inside achieving continuous water, air, and thermal-controll layers on the outside with a ventilated rain screen and an ultra-resilient cladding system. Not only are they efficient they are super resilient; very difficult for the walls to fail or rot. Two fuel sources were incorporated into the home so that it is not tied to just one for heat. The usage of low VOC paints, no formaldehyde, locally sourced artisans and craftsman who use locally sourced materials was also part of the plan. With Covid-19, air quality and a healthy environment became a major concern. The air exchange system ensures delivery of fresh air to every room in the house every 20 minutes. The system is also adjustable (up and down) adjusting to exterior and interior environmental concerns as needed.

Michael remarks, “The look of this house is totally unique. A number of the products we used were brand new and had never been used before. The Marvin Sky Cove on the back of the house was the first of it’s kind! We were in the position of installing something never before installed. We had this 800 lb. window that we were lifting with a fork lift while the engineers were watching and advising via Zoom.”

The design of the panels were also largely theoretical until delivered on site. This happened to be the first batch of Paint-Pro panels that AZEK had ever produced. And finally, there was the brand new open joint cladding system to top everything off.

All firsts aside, the project was a success and OA looks forward to many more. With twenty-six years in the business and over eighty industry awards, Otogawa-Anschel has earned its place as a nationally recognized design+build firm dedicated to positively impacting the environment, the community and those particular clients seeking unique and specific spaces of synergy.

These stores were ahead of the curve for stocking shelves with healthy choices and quality goods, but more and more started embracing the Triple Crown label. As success escalated and Andy became more involved with the brand, it made complete sense when the owner, a hobby sauce maker, approached him with an offer to buy the business. Admittingly, he says it was “a bit of a learning curve.” It wasn’t just distribution anymore, but he added quality control, shipping and marketing to his plate. Based on his prior work at Organic Valley, he also decided to rework the recipe and make it a certified organic barbeque sauce. He worked towards the delicate balance of maintaining the great taste while at the same time making sure it was certified organic, vegan and non-GMO. Andy was “looking for a clean product, a nourishing product,” which according to him, should be the baseline when it comes to all food.

By 2014, Triple Crown had upgraded ingredients, began sourcing local ingredients, had reduced sugar content, and succeeded in becoming gluten free and certified organic. The Classic flavor is the best seller, but is also the most widely known. Black Garlic is the second most popular (and a stand-alone as far as flavors in the barbeque sauce world go), followed by a less sweet, Hickory Bourbon that includes organic bourbon from Journeyman Distillery. Today, the ingredients are clean and the taste is elevated for everyone from the backyard BBQ to the gourmet dinner, and Triple Crown’s competitive days are far from over. Recently, they celebrated a 3rd Place win in the 2019 national All American Royal contest held annually in Kansas City, followed by a 2nd Place win in 2020. This year, Andy says, “We’re going for first.”

MADE WITH ORGANIC TRIPLE CROWN BBQ SAUCE

BBQ CHICKEN LETTUCE C U P S W I T H TA N G Y SESAME CUCUMBERS I AM A SUCKER FOR ANYTHING THAT IS TACO-ESQUE. This is American barbecue chicken meets Southeast Asia and let me tell you, they get along swimmingly. The tangy sesame cucumbers play an important role here and they are not to be missed. Do me a favor; wrap it up, sit back, and think of a beach in Thailand. Enjoy that moment of bliss while finishing the whole lettuce cup in one sitting.

INGREDIENTS + 1lb ground chicken + 1C onion, chopped + 1C red bell pepper, chopped + 1Tbsp fresh ginger, grated + 1 ½ Tbsp garlic, minced + 1 head butter lettuce, leaves separated + 6Tbsp Triple Crown Black Garlic BBQ Sauce + 1 English cucumber, thinly sliced + 2Tsp toasted sesame oil + 1Tbsp rice vinegar, unseasoned + 2Tbsp sesame seeds, toasted + more for garnish + 2Tbsp olive oil + 1Tbsp fresh mint, julienned + more for garnish + ⅔C cashews, roasted, unsalted, chopped + 2Tsp kosher salt + 1-2Tsp sambal chili paste (optional)

02 Over medium heat add remaining olive oil and sesame oil to a sauté pan. Add in the onion and bell pepper and sauté for 6-7 minutes until they begin to soften. Add in ground chicken and combine with onions and peppers. Depending on the fat content of the chicken, you might need a little more oil.

03 Add in ginger and garlic and cook for 10 minutes, until chicken is cooked through.

04 If you like, add in the sambal now, along with the bbq sauce + ¼C water.

05 Cook for a couple of minutes until the sauce and the meat are combined and thicken.

06 To plate, add chicken to each lettuce leaf and top with tangy sesame cucumbers, cashews, more mint and sesame seeds.
