LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Art of Style

September 2026 PUBLISHER

Dear Neighbors, Style is often mistaken for mere fashion, but if life has taught me anything, it is that true style is far deeper. It is the living thread that runs through our wardrobes, our homes, and ultimately, our sense of self. Growing up in Brazil and moving over 15 times throughout my life to various countries and cities; navigating constant shifts in family, education, and personal ambitions while always being the odd one out due to my origins and identity; I was endlessly landing in unfamiliar places. Moving so often meant always having to adapt, discover new ways to express myself, and continuously redefine my world while holding fast to who I am and where I come from. Through all that change, I learned that style isn't about fitting in; it’s about anchoring yourself. The key is finding both a place and a venture that allow you to do just that. For the past seven years, Salt Lake City has been that place for me, and this magazine has been that venture. It is a genuine privilege to highlight the incredible partners and local subjects who show us what it truly means to cultivate a style of one's own. In this issue, we celebrate style across every facet of our community. We explore how City Creek is moving the local fashion needle, with Natalie Watson spearheading the arrival of SKIMS to Salt Lake. We share Kenneth Boggs’ inspiring journey from Section 8 housing to becoming a renowned stylist dressing NBA icons and beyond, as well as the inspiring second chances and journey support that Utah Islanders has with founder Chris Heliin. In the realm of hospitality, Liz from The Tasting Room and the team at Coal & Smoke demonstrate the art of gathering through the deliberate styling and pairing of a charcuterie board. For personal wellness, Maren from Wild Serenity teaches us how to practice deep self-love through intentional personal styling. Finally, we conclude with Britt Keshner, who reminds us of a timeless truth: we always have the power to leave a place better than we found it. Whether you are curating your closet, designing your sanctuary, or honoring your personal journey, I hope these stories inspire you to embrace your roots and express your unique signature to the world.

BRAINS BEHIND SLC’S EVOLVING STYLE The beige-colored barricade had just been installed in the City Creek Center galleria. The word “SKIMS” graced the top left corner in its unmistakable cloudlike font. As soon as the City Creek Center team made the announcement, a buzz filled the air faster than you can say, “Kim Kardashian.” “There’s tremendous consumer awareness and excitement around SKIMS. Based on the response we got from our social media post, you could feel that enthusiasm immediately,” said Natalie Watson, Director of Marketing and Business Development at City Creek Center. Nestled beside Temple Square and in the heart of downtown, City Creek Center is part of the lifeblood that defines Salt Lake City, and Watson and her team have been integral in spearheading the vision that makes the outdoor shopping center not just a place to pick up a new pair of jeans, but a destination in and of itself.

NATALIE WATSON SHAPES SALT LAKE CITY’S EVOLVING STYLE, BRINGING BRANDS LIKE SKIMS TO CITY CREEK.

“I hope [people come and] leave inspired, refreshed and excited to come back,” Watson said. “Whether they found something they love, enjoyed a meal or simply spent time with family or friends, I want them to feel fulfilled in so many different ways.” If you follow the serene, trout-filled stream through the openair corridors, the impressive brand offerings are hard to miss. Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co., recognizable luxury retailers, flank a circular atrium, while distinctive additions like SuitSupply, a Dutch men’s suiting retailer, and Läderach, the Swiss chocolatier, continue expanding the center’s portfolio. But the arrival of SKIMS signals something else: Salt Lake City is not just a place where fashion exists . . . it is a place where fashion thrives. “It really reflects how mature the market has become, and national brands are now recognizing the strength of the community here in Salt Lake City and at City Creek Center. It’s an important place to invest.” “Many people underestimate how sophisticated the Utah shopper is,” Watson said. “They are very brand aware and really looking for an elevated experience.”

The City Creek SKIMS is the first location to open its doors in Utah, representative of the shopping center’s reputation as one of the state’s most forward-thinking fashion destinations. That evolution hasn’t happened overnight. It has been the result of years spent cultivating relationships with retailers while simultaneously redefining what City Creek offers beyond shopping. “We really focus on credibility and understanding what retailers want, and presenting City Creek Center as a place where they can be successful long-term.” Watson’s experience in the industry is both broad and precise. With nearly two decades in retail marketing and six shopping centers behind her, the culmination of her career has led to one conclusion: she understands the Utah shopper. “[We want City Creek to be] the iconic gathering place in the market that people can enjoy year-round.” With a retractable roof that invites the mountain air, seasonal fashion events featuring the center’s retailers, and year-round family-friendly programming, City Creek embodies many of the cultural touchpoints that make Utah a distinct place to live. And once overlooked as a fashion destination, that perception is changing. “Salt Lake is one of the country’s strongest growth markets with an engaged customer base and a healthy economy,” Watson said. That’s reflected in the new retailers arriving at City Creek annually—each adding another layer to the center’s evolving identity. But it’s not just the variety of retailers that makes City Creek special; it’s the atmosphere, the architecture and the intentional experiences that keep people coming back. Shopping is simply the catalyst. CONTINUED >

Perhaps that’s because Natalie herself embodies the City Creek customer. A mother of three, Natalie sports metallic leather Tory Burch espadrilles and a floral FARM Rio jumpsuit from Nordstrom. She looks put together in a way that only Utah moms seem to master—polished yet practical—like she could be at a kid’s basketball game or a girls’ dinner at Takashi. For Watson, City Creek is not simply a place to collect shopping bags, but a place to find joy. Last spring, Watson watched visitors stop in front of floral installations scattered throughout the gallerias. They smiled, snapped photos and tagged City Creek on social media. For her, it wasn’t simply about creating an Instagram-worthy backdrop; it was about creating a reason for people to pause—to enjoy where they were, if only for a moment. It’s no wonder families spend weekends feeding the trout and grabbing brunch, or groups of friends turn an afternoon into hours wandering from storefront to storefront. Between the creek, the fountains, seasonal events and ever-changing

18

collection of retailers, City Creek encourages lingering. That’s the hallmark of a true destination: you don’t need a reason to visit. You simply want to. “Come and rediscover not just City Creek Center, but downtown Salt Lake,” Watson said. “Come down, park, make a day of it and enjoy what this city has to offer. Rediscover why you love where you’re living and why you love downtown Salt Lake.” Long before a new retailer cuts a ribbon, Natalie Watson is building the relationships that make it possible. As Director of Marketing and Business Development, she spends years cultivating trust with national brands, studying retail trends and positioning City Creek Center as a place where retailers can succeed for the long term. It's a role that blends strategy, negotiation and storytelling in equal measure. While visitors see storefronts, seasonal displays and fashion events, Watson sees years of planning coming to life. Every new opening is the result of countless conversations, careful partnerships and a clear vision for City Creek Center's future.

CRAFTED FOR BEAUTY. BUILT FOR UTAH.

STYLE IS

Self-Love Maren believes your personal style has

very little to do with fashion, everything to do with how you see yourself.

“WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?”

I expected Maren Swenson to talk about silhouettes, color palettes or timeless wardrobe staples. Instead, she paused. “Style is freedom,” she said. “It’s self-expression. It’s selfhonor. It’s self-love.” That answer became the foundation of our entire conversation. As the founder of Wild Serenity, Maren helps women build wardrobes they love, but clothing is simply the vehicle. What she’s really helping women discover is confidence, authenticity and self-trust. For many women, especially those navigating career changes, divorce, motherhood, empty nesting or simply entering a new chapter of life, style becomes more than getting dressed. It becomes a way of reconnecting with themselves after years of meeting everyone else’s expectations.

STYLE ISN’T SOMETHING YOU’RE BORN WITH— OR IS IT?

Maren believes it’s both. “We all instinctively know what we’re drawn to,” she explains. “The challenge is that over time we begin dressing for approval instead of intuition.” Learning what flatters your body can absolutely be taught, she says. But discovering what feels authentic requires something much deeper than following trends.

WHY DO SO MANY SUCCESSFUL WOMEN HAVE CLOSETS FULL OF CLOTHES BUT STILL FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR?

According to Maren, it’s rarely because they need more clothing. “It’s because they’re exhausted.” Many women spend years caring for families, building careers and putting themselves last. Their closets become collections of clothes purchased for who they thought they needed to be—not who they actually are. That’s why one of Maren’s first recommendations isn’t shopping. It’s a closet clean-out. Not simply to donate unworn pieces, but to ask better questions. Why did I buy this? How do I feel when I wear it? What was I hoping this outfit would say about me? Those answers often reveal patterns women have never noticed before.

HOW DO YOU DISCOVER YOUR AUTHENTIC STYLE INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING TRENDS?

Maren encourages every client to begin with one simple question before getting dressed: “How do I want to feel today?” Whether you’re heading into a board meeting, a date night or a hike in the mountains, your clothing should support the energy you want to bring into that experience—not someone else’s expectations. “If I were the most confident version of myself today,” she says, “what would I actually want to wear?” Notice the question has nothing to do with anyone else’s opinion.

WHAT CHANGES WHEN WOMEN BEGIN DRESSING FOR THEMSELVES?

Everything. Maren has watched clients walk into business meetings with more confidence, develop stronger relationships, and finally feel comfortable being fully seen. “The clothes aren’t creating confidence,” she says. “They’re simply reflecting the confidence that was already there.” Perhaps that’s why her goal isn’t creating fashionable women. It’s helping women become grateful for themselves. “I want every client to stop waiting for someday,” she says. “To stop waiting for the perfect body, the perfect season or the perfect life before allowing themselves to feel beautiful. I want them to look in the mirror and appreciate the woman they already are.” Because real style isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s having the courage to wear who you already are. “If I were the most confident version of myself today, what would I actually want to wear?

Maren Swenson, a Utah-based personal stylist, feminine expression guide, and the founder of Wild Serenity helps women reconnect with their identity, reclaim their confidence, and express their most authentic selves through the art of personal style. Maren is taking twelve women to Las Vegas for the Unapologetic Tour, three days built around one idea: you don’t need permission to have this. A penthouse welcome centered on the theme: The Power of Resilient Women. September 27-30, 2026. marenswenson.com/events/ vegas-unapologetic-tour.

Kenneth Boggs

ARTICLE BY JESSICA SORBONNE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIO ALCAUTER AND KENNETH BOGGS

From Section 8 housing to premier custom suit maker for some of today’s most well-known athletes.

Kenneth Boggs

Kenneth Boggs settles into his office chair and tips the brim of his all-black cowboy hat from his own line. His monochromatic look says outlaw in an old western, but his quick smile and the way he leans in attentively whenever he's asked a question make him feel like everyone's hero. One thing's for certain: he is the hero of his own story.

22

LOCA L’S CH OICE | ARTS + CU LT U RE

"I didn't like being outside. It was too hot," Kenneth laughs. Instead, his grandmother taught him to sew. He spent his childhood repairing his grandfather's suits while Motown played in the background—a quiet apprenticeship that would shape the course of his life more than anyone could have imagined. Utah, however, proved just as formative. Kenneth arrived on a track scholarship expecting little more than an education. Instead, he found possibility. "The biggest culture shock was seeing fathers with their sons,” said Kenneth. “I saw entrepreneurship everywhere. I saw people building legacies that would outlive them." He describes Utah as collaborative rather than competitive—a place where he realized success wasn't reserved for people born into it. It was something that could be built. CONTINUED >

Boggs as a young boy in LA where he was raised alongside seven siblings.

It began in Section 8 housing in Los Angeles where he was raised by a single mother alongside seven siblings. With no father present and the odds stacked against him, Boggs decided early that if he couldn't choose his circumstances, he could choose the man he would become. "You're born looking like your dad, but you die looking like your decisions," he remarks. It's a lesson his grandfather gave him years ago and one that still guides him today. When you consider someone whose life defied the odds, Boggs comes to mind. But dig a little deeper and it's clear there were threads of his own making all along. His curiosity, grit, and a willingness to be brave eventually earned him a reputation as the custom suit guy in Utah. "I wasn't the smartest. I wasn't the tallest. I wasn't the biggest person. I was just the bravest." Kenneth's grandfather, a Southern minister who believed every young man should know how to work with his hands, insisted his grandchildren learn a trade.

Boggs believes a well-fitting suit isn't just about style; it's about character.

With a lifelong skill, a growing appreciation for craftsmanship, and an understanding that confidence can be cultivated, Kenneth launched Custom by Kenneth Boggs. Today, Custom by Kenneth Boggs has evolved into one of Utah's premier bespoke menswear brands, serving entrepreneurs, executives, professional athletes, and entertainers. Every garment is individually designed using premium fabrics and meticulous craftsmanship, creating an experience that is as personal as the finished suit. Kenneth explains how there's something about a well-tailored suit that changes the way a person carries himself. The drape. The craftsmanship. The fit. "Fashion isn't about where you shop. It's about how you put things together," he says. He can happily spend twenty minutes explaining the anatomy of a quality suit, from full-canvas construction to the difference between glued and handcrafted garments. But for him, the clothing has always been about something deeper. His philosophy is summed up in four letters: A.B.C.D. Appearance. Behavior. Communication. Digital footprint. Appearance opens the door, he says. Behavior, communication, and digital footprint determine what happens once you're inside. Working closely with clients from every walk of life has taught Kenneth an unexpected lesson: “Everybody's going through something.” The clients who sit across from him don’t just choose fabrics; they share difficult insights into their marriages, careers, and insecurities. Somewhere between fittings and final hems, Kenneth realized he is part tailor, part therapist. But his compassion for people, paired with his own upbringing, eventually grew into something larger than a clothing company. Boggs has an established philanthropic foundation, The Kenneth Boggs Group. The group gives

young men what he believes can change the trajectory of a life: mentors, exposure, accountability, and hope. His organization introduces boys to business owners, attorneys, real estate professionals, and entrepreneurs. They learn financial literacy, gentleman’s etiquette, leadership, and confidence, and not simply to become successful, but to become men of character. "It's easier to raise strong children than repair broken men,” he says. “I don't want our boys to become somebody's future daughter's nightmare." Kenneth doesn't pretend every child has the same starting line. Growing up in difficult circumstances gave him a lasting perspective on just how much guidance matters. His goal isn't simply to mentor one generation, but to create a ripple effect of young men who eventually return to mentor the boys coming behind them. When asked whether he'd rather be remembered for the suits, the business, or the lives he's impacted, Kenneth doesn't hesitate. "Impact." It's a fitting answer from a man who built a career around tailoring appearances, only to discover his life's work had less to do with clothing, and more to do with shaping character. T HE S EC OND C H A NC E P L AY B OOK UTAH ISLANDERS HELP ATHLETES DISCOVER PURPOSE BEYOND FOOTBALL AND COLLEGE.

ARTICLE BY JESSICA SORBONNE PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS HELIIN

28

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

Etano Foster thought his football career was over. After injuries derailed opportunities at Weber State and Snow College, he stepped away from the game, unsure what came next. Then, while scrolling Instagram one day, he came across an ad for a Utah Islanders tryout. Today, he's back on the field. His story is exactly why founder Chris Heliin created the organization.

Raised by a single mother after his father left when he was born, Chris describes football as the one constant in an otherwise unpredictable childhood. It gave him structure, friendship and purpose. But injuries during high school and again after moving to Utah ended his own playing career earlier than he had hoped. Years later, after returning to football as a coach, he noticed something missing. Talented young athletes still wanted to compete but had nowhere to go. "I understand what it's like for kids fighting for an opportunity," he says. "There are a lot of Etanos out there." The Utah Islanders compete against collegiate programs while offering an alternative path for athletes who may not fit the traditional college model. Some players attend college. Others pursue trade careers or entrepreneurship while continuing to play the game they love. Chris calls the philosophy Life After Ball. "We're going to give these young men options," he says. "There's not just one path to success." For some players, that means earning a college degree. Others are working toward careers as electricians, firefighters, diesel mechanics or commercial drivers. Football becomes the motivation to stay disciplined while preparing for life beyond the field. "Football is just a vessel," Chris says. "It's the best way for us to have the biggest impact." Etano has experienced that impact firsthand. He describes the Islanders as a brotherhood unlike any team he's played on. Players travel from across the Wasatch Front to practice because they simply love football. More importantly, he says Chris has become a mentor.

"He's like a second father," Etano says. "His belief is really why I'm still going." Behind the scenes, Chris says another person deserves equal credit: his wife, Jessica Heliin. "Without her, there is no football," he says. While Chris leads the vision, she keeps the organization running by solving last-minute logistical challenges and supporting players behind the scenes. Together, they have invested countless hours and personal resources into building what they consider their legacy. The moment Chris knew the mission had become something bigger than football came when a parent thanked him for giving her son another chance to play. "Parents aren't done watching their kids play football yet," he says. That mission continues to grow. Alongside the men's program, the Islanders recently launched a women's flag football team, creating opportunities in one of the nation's fastest-growing sports. Whether it's helping athletes earn another season on the field, prepare for a career or simply believe in themselves again, the Utah Islanders are proving that success isn't defined by a single route. Sometimes, all it takes is someone willing to open another door.

MOR E T H A N WA L L S Entrusted with a Holladay family home, we honored its past and prepared its next chapter.

When our neighbor passed away, his children faced one of life's hardest responsibilities: deciding what came next for the home that had been part of their family for generations. As neighbors, we began with conversations, not just about price, but about timing, trust, and creating a solution that felt right for everyone. That experience was deeply personal for me.

Years earlier, my husband and I purchased my grandmother's home from our own family. Renovating it taught me that homes carry more than walls and finishes; they hold stories. That's the perspective we carried into every decision we made. Throughout the renovation, we intentionally preserved details that mattered, including the original basement fireplace and vintage laundry room light fixture. When everything was finished, we invited the family back. Listening to them share memories inside the home ready for its next chapter.

Caring for the Next Chapter

We believe the best renovations honor both the past and the future. Every decision is made honoring the home's history and thoughtfully preparing it for the next family who will call it home. Some original details deserve to remain because they're part of what makes a home special. Other spaces need to evolve so the home can better serve the way families live today. Long before a home changes hands, it's the backdrop to everyday life. It's where birthdays are celebrated, holiday traditions are made, scraped knees are kissed, Sunday dinners are shared, and ordinary moments quietly become the ones we remember most. Our philosophy is simple: Leave every home better than we found it while honoring the families whose stories made it special in the first place. T H E A RT OF GAT H E R I NG Designing Tables That Tell a Story

Have you ever taken a bite that stopped you in your tracks? The kind that unfolds in layers. Sweet, then savory. Warm, then bright. Crisp giving way to creamy. A bite so balanced it feels almost cinematic. That’s the Ratatouille moment. At Coal & Smoke, we believe a table should create that same experience before anyone takes their first bite. Long before guests taste the food, they’re taking in the colors, texture, and abundance.

Designing a memorable gathering is about more than serving beautiful food. It’s about creating an experience.

START WITH A FEELING.

Before planning the menu, decide how you want your guests to feel. Warm and rustic? Elegant and refined? Bright and playful? Your menu, serving pieces, florals, and color palette should all support that story.

LET NATURE PROVIDE THE COLOR.

Look for natural moments of color: bowls of citrus, fresh herbs, edible flowers, ripe figs, or seasonal blooms. These elements create visual highlights without relying on decoration alone. A drizzle of hot honey over creamy cheese. Honeycomb instead of a jar. Flaky sea salt. Toasted nuts. Fresh herbs. Infused olive oil. Thoughtful finishing touches transform familiar ingredients into something guests remember. Luxury rarely comes from excess. It comes from intention.

DESIGN WITH DIMENSION.

Mix natural materials like wood, stone, glass, and ceramic, but let one become the hero. Introduce varying heights with risers, bowls, cake stands, and serving vessels. Layer pieces so guests discover something new with every glance. The goal isn’t symmetry. It’s movement. Your eye should travel naturally across the table, discovering small moments tucked between larger focal points. That’s where abundance begins to feel effortless.

LET FOOD BECOME THE CENTERPIECE.

Food has always been what brings people together. Design the table to celebrate it. When every detail supports the meal, food becomes more than something you serve—it becomes the heart of the gathering.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER.

For an evening with Centro de la Familia, we designed a Latin-inspired menu celebrating vibrant flavors, community, and heritage. We began with the feeling we wanted guests to experience: warm, welcoming, and full of life. That vision inspired smoked honey chipotle chicken tacos, carne asada tacos with salsa verde, colorful vegetarian tostadas, cowboy caviar, rich chocolate mousse, and refreshing lemon cheesecake cups. From there, every design decision followed naturally. Bold red anthuriums added height, color, and warmth. Fresh avocados, limes, citrus, and herbs reinforced the menu’s freshness, while wood serving pieces, handcrafted ceramics, layered display stands, and natural greenery created texture and depth. Rather than treating the food and tablescape as separate elements, we designed them as one cohesive experience. But the philosophy remains the same: every choice— from the menu to the serving pieces to the smallest finishing touch—should work together to tell the story of the people gathered around the table. Because in the end, it was never just about serving food. It was about creating something deeply personal for the people sharing it. That’s the philosophy behind everything we create at Coal & Smoke, always. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / M I L LC R E E K

The Perfect BOARD Everything you need for a memorable charcuterie board and perfect wine pairing.

ARTICLE BY LIZ FROME AND RYAN CRAFTS

At The Tasting Room, we believe the best evenings aren’t rushed—they unfold. And nothing encourages that quite like a beautiful charcuterie board. It invites people to graze, compare notes, and linger. That’s the whole point. The good news? You don’t need restaurant training to build one. Just a little strategy, a few quality ingredients, and the right bottle alongside it. Start with the stars: meat and cheese. Plan on about 1–2 ounces of charcuterie and 2–3 ounces of cheese per person for an appetizer, or more if the board is the meal. Aim for contrast. Pair delicate prosciutto with rustic salami or capicola. For cheese, choose something soft, something blue, and something aged. We’re fortunate to have incredible local options, from Creminelli Fine Meats to Beehive Cheese’s Barely Buzzed and Heber Valley’s Vanilla Bean cheddar.

Next, brighten the board with fresh produce. Grapes, berries, pears, and figs pair beautifully with rich meats and cheeses, while cucumbers, radishes, peppers, or colorful carrots add crunch and freshness. Dried fruit also brings sweetness and texture year-round. Now add the supporting cast. Local honey, fig jam, or marmalade complements everything from blue cheese to aged cheddar. Olives, roasted nuts, or tapenade contribute savory depth, while pickles, whole-grain mustard, or chimichurri provide the acidity that keeps every bite tasting fresh. Don’t forget the vehicles. Offer a combination of crusty bread, crostini, lavosh, or crackers so guests have both crisp and chewy options. One of the simplest upgrades is serving everything at the proper temperature. Remove cheese from the refrigerator 45–60 minutes before serving and let cured meats rest for 20–30 minutes. Room temperature allows flavors and textures to fully develop. Before serving, step back and fill any empty spaces with fresh herbs, edible flowers, or pomegranate seeds. An abundant board always feels more inviting than a sparse one. As for drinks, start with sparkling wine. Its acidity and bubbles cut through rich meats and cheeses beautifully. Bright whites like Sauvignon Blanc or Albariño are equally refreshing, while lightly chilled Pinot Noir or Gamay pairs effortlessly with cured meats. Beer works wonderfully too, and a dry sparkling cider is an excellent nonalcoholic option. Finally, include one conversation piece: an unfamiliar cheese, a local honey, or a unique wine. The best charcuterie boards don’t just feed people—they invite them to slow down, explore, and stay awhile.
