NEW: THE COLDWELL BANKER REALTY REPORT
As the warmth of summer begins to stretch across Milford, there’s a special kind of joy in the air—a joy that comes from long walks with our dogs, afternoons in the park with our kids, and those fleeting, magical moments where pets and children remind us what it means to live with open-hearted curiosity.
This issue of Milford City Lifestyle is dedicated to that very spirit. Our theme, “Kids and Pets,” celebrates the everyday moments and local stories that make our town such a special place to raise families— whether two-legged or four.
In this issue, we talk with the folks at a local fencing company whose mission goes far beyond building barriers. Their work keeps Milford’s pets safe in their backyards and children secure as they play—a reminder that safety is a quiet kind of love we build into our homes.
We also feature an interview with a talented local artist who has found a way to bridge her creative world with her role as a mother. Her story speaks to the power of art to connect generations and nurture imagination, even amid the daily chaos of family life.
If you’ve strolled through downtown lately, you’ve probably met some of the stars of our “Dogs of Downtown” profiles. From floppy-eared greeters outside shops to pint-sized pooches with big personalities, these canine companions are just as much a part of our community as their humans.
And for our younger residents with minds as sharp as their chess strategies, we take you inside the Dawson Chess Academy. Run by a local couple passionate about teaching, the academy is fostering not only critical thinking but also patience, perseverance, and sportsmanship in Milford’s children.
At its heart, this issue is about connection—between kids and pets, parents and children, neighbors and friends. It’s a celebration of the things that make Milford feel like home.
As always, thank you for reading, and for being part of the Milford story.

How Reliable Fence Works to Protects Kids, Pets, and More
ARTICLE BY NATALIE BARLETTA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STAFF
Attention to detail, professionalism, and thoughtful recommendations were just a few of the reasons why Buddy DeGannero was impressed with Reliable Fence.
DeGannero noted that the finished product, which included a smooth transition from a sixfoot fence to a four-foot section and a solution for a grade contour on his property, resulted in a visually cohesive and functional outcome.
Thanks to Reliable Fence’s expertise and care in design, the final result, he said, was “very appealing.”
That level of service and craftsmanship is not by chance. According to Deven Iannone, current owner of Reliable Fence, those very qualities—attention to detail, professionalism, and thoughtful planning—are at the heart of what his uncle, Joe Iannone, envisioned when founding the company.
“Those things that DeGannero said are the very standards that Joe Iannone had when he started his company,” Deven explains. “That gold standard is that very standard that Reliable Fence operates, functions, and lives by.”
This philosophy continues to guide the company’s work today.
“It’s very, very simple,” Iannone says. “What would I want at my home or my business? The quality, innovation, and trust that Big Joe pioneered has been ingrained in all of us.”
The company’s mission extends beyond fence installation. It’s also about giving homeowners peace of mind. Whether protecting children, pets, or aging family members, Reliable Fence places safety at the center of each project.
That commitment begins with the consultation process, which typically lasts between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. These meetings are essential for setting expectations and ensuring every aspect of the project is customized.
For pet owners, those recommendations are based on understanding the animal’s specific behavior and lifestyle. Iannone takes time to ask targeted questions about the pet’s size, temperament, and energy level.
“From that information, we’re then able to make suggestions, recommendations, and design the correct enclosure or design the fence correctly for your pet’s needs,” Iannone says. “Everybody’s dog is different. You have to think like a dog, just like you would have to think like a criminal for security.”
Children’s safety is also a major concern. Reliable Fence begins by asking families what their specific safety concerns are.
“These questions include the needs of the family themselves and answering the overall question of what are we keeping kids safe from,” Iannone explains, “whether it may be keeping children from getting into a backyard pool or just making sure they remain in the backyard, it all starts with that consultation period.”
From structural elements like fence height and the removal of sharp edges, to fine-tuned decisions like latch placement, every detail is intentional.
“We also want to make sure that they are not going to be in an area that’s easily accessible for children,” Iannone says.
That level of care comes from treating customers with compassion and respect.
Iannone says that many of the customers he has feel like family, which is why safety is such a big concern of theirs, and why they go above and beyond to protect those their customer loves.
“Everybody’s home is different,” he says. “Fencing is not a one-size-fits-all solution.”
Reliable Fence CT is a trusted, family-owned fencing contractor serving Milford for nearly six decades. Specializing in residential and commercial installations—including wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link—they also offer arbors, pergolas, gates, and expert repair services. Their “Pooch Priority” program ensures pet-safe designs, and most projects are efficiently completed in a single day.

When Julianna Dawson first moved to Milford with her husband, David Dawson, she had no idea chess would become such a meaningful part of their lives. Inspired by David’s lifelong passion and impressive chess career, which included representing Barbados in international Chess Olympiad events, Julianna and David launched The Dawson Chess Academy and Whole Life Change LLC. Today, the academy is thriving as a family-centered community hub, bringing chess enthusiasts of all ages together.
The seeds of the academy were planted through David’s generosity and passion for chess. Initially, David volunteered his time, teaching chess to over 50 Milford community members free of charge. These volunteer efforts provided families a chance to experience the game firsthand, fueling local enthusiasm. “That initial community service project planted seeds we’re still seeing grow,” Julianna reflects, recalling how those early sessions quickly turned into lasting relationships and thriving after-school programs.
Combining David’s expert chess background with Julianna’s extensive experience in corporate business development and entrepreneurship, the academy quickly evolved into a highly personalized, interactive learning environment. Their distinct teaching style is engaging and supportive, carefully designed to meet every student exactly where they
are in their chess journey. The duo balance each other well, Julianna says. “David brings joy, playfulness, and a lighthearted spirit to teaching – sometimes I can be more serious or structured. Watching him during our first year of teaching reminded me that chess, especially for beginners and kids, should feel fun and inviting.”
According to Julianna, what sets their method apart isn’t necessarily the specific chess strategies they teach, but rather their attentive approach. “We adapt to every learner,” she emphasizes. “Our job is to guide students thoughtfully, ensuring they understand the game fully without ever feeling rushed or overwhelmed.” Regular chess sessions involve creative teaching strategies, such as blitz games and simultaneous chess exhibitions, designed to keep younger students excited and curious.
One key influence shaping their teaching philosophy is Julianna and David’s role as parents. Julianna shares that becoming parents enhanced their sense of empathy, patience, and understanding. These qualities deeply influence how they coach young learners, ensuring each student feels seen and encouraged, building not only chess skills but self-confidence and resilience.
The Dawson Chess Academy’s family-oriented approach resonates deeply within Milford, attracting entire families eager to learn and grow together. Julianna notes how chess uniquely bridges generations, allowing parents, children, and even grandparents to share meaningful time away from screens. The positive feedback from local families has reinforced their mission; one parent remarked, “I appreciate how you teach in a non-competitive way that helps my kids enjoy learning. It’s rare today.” CONTINUED
David’s high-level competitive background offers additional inspiration for students. Julianna observes that while the children often discover David’s Olympiad participation with excitement, the real focus remains on each student’s own journey. “Our aim isn’t to highlight our credentials,” Julianna says, “but rather to encourage students and families to discover the joy of chess themselves.”
“DAVID BRINGS JOY, PLAYFULNESS, AND A LIGHTHEARTED SPIRIT TO TEACHING...WATCHING HIM DURING OUR FIRST YEAR OF TEACHING REMINDED ME THAT CHESS, ESPECIALLY FOR BEGINNERS AND KIDS, SHOULD FEEL FUN AND INVITING.”
Looking forward, Julianna and David are dedicated to thoughtful growth. Julianna is currently crafting a detailed business plan, aiming to further develop and expand academy programs. Exciting community events are also on the horizon, including their popular annual Summer Chess Workshop series at the Milford Public Library, scheduled for August 6th and 13th, 2025. Additionally, The Dawson Chess Academy continues to expand its presence in Milford-area elementary schools, enriching after-school activities.
Asked about the one takeaway she hopes every family gains from their academy experience, Julianna’s answer is clear: confidence, curiosity, and the recognition that learning is a lifelong adventure. “Chess is one of the few activities where kids and adults can meet as equals,” Julianna reflects. “It’s ageless, screen-free, and encourages thinking, patience, and fun.”

Payal Emery, a Milford-based artist and family nurse practitioner, blends compassion and creativity in her vibrant, mixed-media work. Her journey began in elementary school art classes, where an enthusiastic teacher first sparked her love for artistic expression. While she pursued a demanding academic path at NYU, art remained a therapeutic outlet—something she rediscovered when a college roommate handed her a blank canvas and said, “just paint.”
The pandemic brought unexpected challenges and renewed artistic purpose. With her young son home—later diagnosed with autism—Emery turned to art as a way to connect and communicate. “Art really helped him express himself more,” she shares. As they painted together, it not only helped her son but also reignited Emery’s own passion. She began taking online art classes and learning how to build her voice and career as a professional artist. Now focused on acrylic painting, Emery’s work is colorful, layered, and inspired by nature, animals, and spontaneous collaboration—often with her children. “I like to think of it as spreading your voice through your colors,” she says. Her
creative process often begins with a freeform background of collage or expressive brushstrokes, later layered with projected images drawn from nature or family photographs. Her art invites viewers to embrace imperfections, layering over them to create something new and expressive.
Deeply involved in the Milford community, Emery has taught children’s art classes through the Giggling Pig and after-school programs at Orange Avenue School. She’s hosted paint nights, including one featuring her popular portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and is in the process of offering healing art workshops through the MAC. She’s also preparing four murals for the Milford Public Library’s children’s department. Through commissions, pet portraits, and original artwork available on her website, Emery continues to use art to bring joy and healing. A portion of her art sales supports animal welfare and children’s education—a testament to her belief that “art heals.”

It took me years.
Years to hone my craft. Years of study. Years of practice. Years of therapy.
Now, I am gainfully employed at a shoe store where I do not – I repeat, do not – eat any of the shoes. I have been awarded the highest honor a pup can receive: a team of humans who trust me with their customers’ soles, who see me as more than a leather-chomping, sneaker-sniffing menace. I am humbled to serve Milford this way.
I’d say I’m pretty easy going, all things considered. How can you not be, when you’re surrounded by artists, performers, and creatives? My one wish is that people knew there’s more to me than my glorious coat and show-stopping grin. In fact, my first poetry chapbook, Sit, Stay, Stanza, comes out this year. Be sure to check out my favorite piece, “The Road Not Sniffed.”
As an apprentice at Sunshine Ceramics I spend every day in an incredibly beautiful pottery studio, where I soak in decades of knowledge about the craft. People say, “What a cute dog,” failing to realize that despite my good looks I am a tormented soul. Regardless of my passion for pottery my paws simply are not made for the clay work I so badly yearn to do. My mom has let me paint before, but that left me even more desperate for the pottery wheel. So please, if you’re a human person, come clay with us, and make the art piece I am longing to create. And bring treats.
