G R A& C L E A C E THE INSPIRING STORY BEHIND HOW RICK AND MELISSA HINNANT TURNED TRAGEDY INTO VICTORY AND CONTINUE TO GIVE BACK THROUGH FASHION + STYLE 14
Midtown Lifestyle | September 2018
THEIR “ACCIDENTAL COMPANY.” It’s what Melissa and Rick Hinnant call Grace & Lace— their successful fashion company that bloomed from great tragedy and a pair of boot socks. Rick owned a landscaping company, and Melissa was in real estate. They decided it was time to slow down and start a family, but surprisingly to them, this took more time than they expected. After years of trying, Melissa finally had a healthy pregnancy, and the two were on their way to fulfilling a lifelong dream.
“IT WASN’T SOMETHING EITHER OF US SET OUT TO DO, BUT LOOKING BACK, IT’S LIKE EVERYTHING FELL INTO PLACE DESPITE THINGS FEELING LIKE THEY WERE—AT TIMES—FALLING APART.”
“One day, I was inspired to make a pair of boot socks for myself that had lace on the top of them peeking out of my boots,” Melissa says. “They took me eight hours to make and were a pain in the butt—I swore I’d never make another pair again. However, every time I wore them, women—total strangers—would stop me to ask where I bought these socks.” Rick encouraged Melissa to sell them online, where people fell in love with both the socks and the story behind them. That’s how the “accidental business” started. “It wasn’t something either of us set out to do, but looking back, it’s + Honeycomb Knit Sweater + Lightweight Two Fit Knit + Chiffon Hi/Low Extender
like everything fell into place despite things feeling like they were—at times—falling apart,” Melissa says. In 2013, Rick and Melissa appeared on ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank” and developed an incredible partnership with self-made real estate millionaire and “Shark Tank” investor Barbara Corcoran. People were continuing to fall in love with the brand and its story. Grace & Lace went

ONE PIECE, THREE WAYS DESIGNER STEPHANIE GEYER FINDS VERSATILE PIECES AT SCOTT ANTIQUES MARKET

Midtown Lifestyle | September 2018
ONCE A MONTH, INTERIOR DESIGNER STEPHANIE GEYER CAN BE FOUND SCOURING SCOTT ANTIQUE MARKETS. While she keeps an eye out for interesting pieces daily, her monthly ritual of weaving through the antique showroom is where she gets some of her best ideas. The antique show comes to the Atlanta Expo Center on the second weekend of every month for four days, and Stephanie is sure to be there as soon as doors open on Thursday mornings. "Sometimes I'll go, and I don't find or buy anything," she says. "You walk through to see what you can find." She's found antique lamps, vintage art and benches. "It's a great place to shop for unusual things. You get in the zone and are both intently looking while seeing what catches your eye. You have to be in the mood for Scott's, be patient and feeling creative."Â Olive buckets were Stephanie's most recent find. Traditionally, the metal buckets were used during olive harvests for picking, their long, narrow slits aiding in washing. Today, the buckets can be used as baskets, planters, storage and even transformed to become light fixtures. When the olive buckets caught her eye, Stephanie and a client were looking for lighting that would fit in with modern farmhouse theme. The olive buckets stood out as a way to be unpredictable, provide a focal piece and create a lampshade that played with light. CONTINUED >

“Because of the slits in the bucket, there is a glowing pattern of light on the ceiling that is super cool,” Stephanie says. The olive buckets are now the client’s favorite piece for the bright pop they offer the room, as well as the creative process they reflect. "A collaborative project makes for a better project, and it's not 100 percent designer-driven. The piece now has a story." Versatile perch: If you don’t currently have a bench, Stephanie urges you to buy one pronto. Long, exposed wood can be a statement in itself, or it can be used for extra seating or can rest in front of a fire for warming feet. Move it around the room every few days to keep things fresh. MIDTOWN LADIES ARE EVER-EVOLVING. It’s a city where eclectic is a compliment and clothes can both have city vibes and country comfort. This fall, Midtown Lifestyle stopped by South Moon Under for the latest inspiration. The boutique in Ponce City Market is known for carrying constantly changing products to be discovered and a unique mix of in-house brands. Tour guide and South Moon Under fashionista Carly Vaseleck gave us a sneak peek of changing colors and led us through fall feelings—literally, we couldn’t stop touching the fabric and textures!

FALL FASHION
(CON TI N U ED)
FALL 2018 TRENDS: Human Nature: Revolt against data and screens and return to natural elements and the outdoors. Reach for textiles that offer a handspun feel with organic materials, tactile surfaces and textured sweaters. Key colors in this group are sage greens, rust, wine and gray. Throwback-Inspired: The '70s were part rebellion and strength marked by strong fashion statements. References to this decade flourish today in suiting, menswear plaid, flare bottoms, turtlenecks and shearling outerwear. CONTINUED >

FALL FASHION
(CON TI N U ED)
Changing Colors: Some colors scream fall, while others need to change like the leaves. Pink can carry into fall when paired back to marigold, yellow should transition to mustard and purple evolves to deeper blue tones and burnt aborigines. Print Power: Try a print to feel bold. Menswear plaids, bold graphic stripes, geometric non-print prints, modern bohemian patchwork and paisleys, dark grounded florals and textures in sweater yarns offset basic pieces.

FALL FASHION
(CON TI N U ED)
Cover Up: The key silhouette of the past few seasons, the off-theshoulder top, is down trending and is replaced with interest and details in the sleeve. Wrap tops, relaxed shirting and back detail are providing newness in tops and sweaters. Basic silhouettes are updated with details such as smocking, ties, buttons, lace-up and ruffles/tiers. Leggy Ladies: Leg shapes are starting to change, and the reliance on skinny silhouettes are slowing declining as the trend moves to wider leg shapes. Rises continue to get higher, so think vintage-inspired fits and washes for denim styles.

E D I AT E M M I SMILE AT MIDTOWN CENTER FOR ADVANCED PERIODONTICS, COSMETIC AND IMPLANT DENTISTRY, DR. BROCK PUMPHREY REPLACES TEETH DAILY. If someone knocks out a front tooth, he’s able to replace the tooth in the same day. If someone has suffered from tooth decay, he can salvage the teeth and create a natural, healthy smile moving forward. As dental specialists, Dr. Pumphrey and practice founder Dr. Shuster spent three additional years of training to specialize in the field of implants, and their practices have made a positive impact on Midtown. Atlanta native Dr. Pumphrey graduated from Woodward Academy, attended Augusta University, previously known as Medical College of Georgia, and earned his dental degree. He stayed there for an additional three years earning his certificate in the specialty of periodontics. He now carries on the legacy of Dr. Shuster with Midtown Center for Advanced Periodontics, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, a practice founded more than 30 years ago as one of the first periodontal practices in Atlanta. Now that he’s been in Midtown for nearly a year, Dr. Pumphrey has seen many teeth transformations. One patient consulted with the dental implant specialist to simply improve his smile. He wasn't vain or seeking a toothy grin for the ladies, but for the No. 1 girl in his life: his daughter. In anticipation of a father-daughter dance, the patient had a consultation with Dr. Pumphrey to evaluate his medical history, get X-rays and learn more about dental implant procedures. Rather than resorting to dentures, Dr. Pumphrey provided a full set of teeth fixed in with implants in one session. "In just one morning I was able to give him something he can wear permanently that looks absolutely natural—much more natural than what he had before—all so he could smile for the Daddy-Daughter Dance," he says. The values of Midtown Center of Advanced Periodontics, Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry run deep as some of the staff have been there for more than 25 years. Dr. Pumphrey said the tight-knit team listens to everything from James Brown to the latest hits as they treat patients, and patients always leave singing “I Feel Good.”

THE VALUES OF MIDTOWN CENTER OF ADVANCED PERIODONTICS, COSMETIC AND IMPLANT DENTISTRY RUN DEEP AS SOME OF THE STAFF HAVE BEEN THERE FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS.
Chomper Crash Course: Dental implants simply replace a missing tooth root. The implant is attached to a porcelain crown or other restoration with a support. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, several missing teeth or all your teeth. The implant looks, feels and functions in the same manner as a natural tooth. Because it replaces the tooth root as well as the visible part of the tooth, it helps deter bone loss. Midtown
