F IS FOR “FOODIE,” A PERSON WITH A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN FOOD. Someone who’s always up for trying new places and has a refined but adventurous palate. And this month at Midtown Lifestyle, we’re all about feasting with foodies as we just scratch the surface of all the fine eats and drinks Midtown has to offer. The dog days of summer brought us ice cream, refreshing salads and cocktails enjoyed by the pool as we celebrated the Fourth of July, vacations and abundant sunshine. But the autumnal days of October bring us chili cooking on the stove, seasonal fruits and veggies and pumpkin spice, well, pretty much everything, as we celebrate football season, some warm-weather relief and shorter days moving toward the end of the year. Whether you consider yourself a foodie, a gourmet, an epicure or just an average eater; whether you’re into nachos at a game, craft beer at your favorite brewery, a latte from your favorite café or just a pumpkin full of leftover Halloween candy, we hope

SOUTHERN BELLE FARMS HAS BEEN OPERATING IN THE SOUTH-GEORGIA CITY OF MCDONOUGH FOR 80 YEARS. The former dairy farm was sold by the Carter family in 1986 and changed over into a cattle and hay farm with thoughts of developing the property into an educational/agritourism farm. In 2005, Jake Carter spearheaded the family’s journey into the agricultural tourism business, building a new barn for events and a year later building Southern Belle’s first corn maze. Some 13 years later, the 300-acre farm now features a fully operational market and bakery, as well as a variety of activities including hayrides, a cow train ride, a corn cannon, a jumping pillow, pedal cart racing, a giant tunnel slide, a Kiddie Korral, a corn box, rubber duck races, barnyard animals and pig races. During the fall season, one of the main attractions at Southern Belle Farms is the pumpkin patch. Families come from miles around every October to pick pumpkins for decorating and carving. “We provide an experience for families to come out and unplug from society,” says Southern Belle Farms General Manager Daniel Welliver. “One way we do that is through the pumpkin patch. Year after year, families come out and pick a pumpkin, carve it together and really have a worthwhile experience.” The expansive pumpkin patch offers all different type of pumpkins that are both grown at the farm and shipped in for visitors to pick. The family experience is what makes Southern Belle Farms a worthwhile place to visit. The family-owned business prides itself in creating a wholesome environment for children and their parents to enjoy and learn in. “It’s about letting the people from all different walks of life and all different backgrounds learn and grow together,” Daniel says. In addition to pumpkins, the farm also grows a number of other crops including strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, peaches and grapes. Many of the fruits are used to make delicious seasonal fried pies, which are sold in the Country Market and Mimi’s Bakery. In fall, the market’s most popular items are fried pies, homemade ice cream and kettle corn. Southern Belle is a fun and educational place to visit. More than 30,000 children from across the state visit the farm annually to learn about agriculture in the fall, spring and summer. Although the farm has become a tourist destination, attracting more than 100,000 visitors per year, it is still a farm. Wearing comfortable clothing is advised, and shoes that will be easy to walk in on rough terrain. They recommend that visitors wear tennis shoes or boots with low heels.

Midtown Lifestyle | October 2018
KEVIN RATHBUN HAS BEEN IN THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS. Kevin began his career as a dishwasher at a local restaurant in his hometown, Kansas City, eventually working his way up to sous chef. Throughout his impressive career, Kevin has worked with several world-renowned chefs including Bradley Ogden, Emeril Lagasse and Stephen Pyles. Atlanta residents got their first taste of the Iron Chef America winner’s take on Southwestern cuisine when Kevin opened NAVA in the late 1990s. He would later go on to introduce Fusion to Atlanta as the executive chef of Bluepointe. Since striking out on his own and opening his first Atlanta restaurant, Rathbun’s, in 2004, Kevin has continued to add flavor to the city’s culinary scene with Krog Bar, Kevin Rathbun Steak and most recently KR Steak Bar. Kevin and his wonderful wife, Melissa, invited Midtown Lifestyle into their lovely Morningside home to experience their hand-crafted kitchen in person. Designed by Joel Kelly of Joel Kelly Designs, the indoor and outdoor kitchens feature a full suite of Viking stainless steel appliances. Kevin—who says he doesn’t get to cook at home as often as he’d like—enjoys barbecuing when he has the time, using both gas and charcoal. “When I was building this house, I was going to put this nice cast-iron charcoal grill in, and my wife said, ‘We can’t resell the house if you do that, so get a gas grill,'” he says with a laugh. “So, I keep the Green Egg around all the time for charring my steaks on charcoal." In addition to running four restaurants, the Rathbuns are actively involved in several charitable organizations around the city, including Open Hand Atlanta. CONTINUED >

W H E R E TO EAT YOUR FAVORITE CHEFS’ FAVORITE CHEFS
CHEFS ARE NOT ONLY EXCELLENT AT COOKING FOOD; THEY ARE ALSO THE BEST PEOPLE TO ASK WHERE TO GO AND EAT. We spoke with a few of Atlanta’s best chefs to ask where they eat when they aren’t cooking in their own homes or restaurants. Their answers covered fine dining, affordable restaurants and several different cuisines from different countries. You will be surprised by some of their selections—and you may even discover a new favorite.

CHEF CHRIS M AHER
OTHER THAN ALLORA, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN ATLANTA? Sotto Sotto in Inman Park WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE FOOD AND ENERGY AT SOTTO SOTTO THAT DRAWS YOU IN? The simplicity of everything. The food and service are always spot-on without being overly complicated or pretentious, so I can always relax and enjoy myself. And on a night off of work, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. I live right around the corner, so it’s quickly become my neighborhood go-to spot for a delicious meal and glass of wine. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH TO EAT THERE? The mushroom risotto. It’s so hard to find properly cooked risotto, and they typically nail it. WHICH WINE DO YOU LIKE TO PAIR WITH THE MUSHROOM RISOTTO? They’ve got a great Italian wine list that’s constantly changing, so I typically lean on their sommelier to steer me in the right direction. IS THERE A DISH ON THE MENU THAT YOU WANT TO TRY BUT HAVEN’T GOT AROUND TO IT YET? Last time I was there, I saw a smoked burrata dish on the menu that sounded pretty good. I was with a group of friends doing a pasta tasting at the time and was too full to even think about it. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GOING TO THE RESTAURANT? I’ve been dining there for the past year and a half and they’ve yet to let me down. WHY WOULD YOU ADVISE FELLOW ATLANTANS TO CHECK SOTTO SOTTO? They’re not pushing culinary boundaries by try-

OTHER THAN CITY WINERY, WHAT IS
YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE IN THE CITY OF ATLANTA?
I love Oakhurst and what they have to offer. From Steinbeck’s to Double Dragon, I love what Andy and George are doing there. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE RESTAURANT, CHEF AND THE FOOD THAT DRAW YOU IN? I like that they shop locally and change their menus up as the season change, plus there are always great eats. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISHES TO EAT ON THE MENU? At Steinbeck’s, it is the eggplant fries because they are amazing. Double Dragon’s housemade wontons in aromatic chili oil are amazing. IS THERE A PARTICULAR DISH ON THE MENU THAT YOU WANT TO TRY BUT HAVEN’T GOT AROUND TO YET? Typically, there is always something that I can try that’s new on the menu. WHAT COCKTAIL OR BEVERAGE PAIRS BEST WITH IT EITHER DISH? I’m a drink-what-you-like kind of guy, so I order a beer or a cocktail—just depends what I’m in the mood for. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GOING TO THE RESTAURANTS? Steinbeck’s probably 4 or 5 years, Double Dragon only a year now. WHY WOULD YOU ADVISE ATLANTANS TO CHECK IT OUT? It’s a great area that you can hang out in, in the square after dinner or just hop from restaurant to restaurant and try a little bit of everything. Plus, I like it because it is in my backyard and easy for me to get to. 22

OTHER THAN 5CHURCH, WHAT IS YOUR FAScotley Innis, 5Church
VORITE RESTAURANT TO EAT AT IN ATLANTA? Negril Village. I grew up on Jamaican cuisine, so that’s one of the reasons that it is my favorite. It has that authentic Jamaican highend restaurant feel. The atmosphere itself attracts you before you even taste the food. It has authentic Jamaican dishes, which I grew up eating as a younger kid growing up in a Jamaican household. Plus, I’m cool with the chef, Yusef Walker, who is a talented individual. They take good care of me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU? I have two, but my No. 1 is ackee and saltfish. It is considered a national Jamaican breakfast, but I love it so much that I eat it any time of day. IS THERE ANYTHING ON THE MENU THAT YOU HAVEN’T TRIED BEFORE? That’s like a second home, so there is nothing on the menu that I haven’t tried yet, except for their Escovitch Fish. That’s a pan-fried fish topped with pickled vegetables. That’s my next dish to try one day. WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY DRINK ALONG WITH THE ACKEE AND SALTFISH? I’ll start with a Red Stripe beer to wash down the dumplings, and then I’ll finish it off with their famous rum punch. FOR ANYONE WHO ISN’T FAMILIAR WITH JAMAICAN FOOD OR THEY HAVEN’T BEEN TO NEGRIL VILLAGE, WHY WOULD YOU ADVISE THEM TO GO? It welcomes everybody. I feel like it’s a staple in Atlanta and a great brunch spot. There is live music on a regular basis. The atmosphere and decor are welcoming. It gives you that island feel in the South. We don’t have a lot of Caribbean restaurants in Atlanta that are like Negril Village. CONTINUED >

CHEF TO M CATHERALL OTHER THAN TACO COWBOY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN ATLANTA? Fortune Cookie Chinese restaurant on Briarcliff. I worked at a Chinese restaurant when I was 20 years old back in England. Once I started eating their food, I started liking Asian food. WHAT IS IT ABOUT FORTUNE COOKIE THAT YOU LIKE SO MUCH? Consistent in quality. Alice the owner is there every day, and the same wait staff has been there forever too. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU? Chicken and broccoli with hot and sour soup. IS THERE A DISH ON THE MENU THAT YOU WANT TO TRY BUT HAVEN’T GOT AROUND TO IT YET AND WHY? The spicy lamb is very good. I sometimes venture from my chicken and broccoli but always return to my favorite dish. WHAT COCKTAIL OR BEVERAGE PAIRS BEST WITH IT AND WHY? Tsingtao beer HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GOING TO THE RESTAURANT, AND WHY WOULD YOU ADVISE ATLANTANS TO CHECK IT OUT? I’ve been going to Fortune Cookie for more than 20 years. It never disappoints. It’s just consistently good, and they have the friendliest wait staff. Its value for the money too. I always tell Alice that [the prices] are too cheap.

PERRINE’S WINE SHOP IS ONE OF THE PREMIER STORES OF ITS KIND IN ATLANTA. Located in West Midtown, Perrine’s was founded by Certified Sommelier Perrine Prieur in 2010. A native of Burgundy, France, Perrine’s family has been in the wine business for nearly 30 years. It is safe to say wine is in her blood.
