Lifestyle Letter Photo Scott Areman

Well, hello there!

This little gem is the first issue of Midtown Lifestyle magazine. Our lifestyle gurus have carefully chosen you to receive the magazine every month knowing you like to shop locally, dine nearby, support businesses in the neighborhood and will be interested in reading about people in our community who live and work here too. Our editor (that’s me) and publisher live intown Atlanta and are embarking on this print journalism journey together because we honestly believe we live in the most amazing area in Atlanta. Right? Just look through these pages and you’ll see news about developments going vertical (the 4.5- acre Opus Place), updates on our favorite spots and tasty stories from loyal people like the wildly successful Hugh Acheson who chose Midtown as his Atlanta outpost and Tom Murphy, our mayor of Virginia-Highland. In every issue (which will arrive in your mailbox by the first of the month and available as a digital subscription) we’ll bring you events in our calendar, news in Around Town and features that reaffirm you’re living in the right community. This magazine is about YOU and I hope we can dialogue through our social media and email. If you know of a budding business, engaging educator, compelling collector, fab family or little-known local attraction, please DO TELL.

His Space I

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS

n honor of our fathers this month, we talked with Stephanie Andrews, founder of Balance Design in Candler Park, and

asked how she works with men to make their homes special and more meaningful. ML: WE LOVE MEN, BUT WHAT MAKES THEIR DESIGN NEEDS DIFFERENT?

SA: What we've noticed about our guys is that they usually have strong feelings about what they do and do not like and take very little time to make a decision. We enjoy their subtle (and not so subtle) nuances, and we would like to shed a little insight on designing specifically for men. ML: WHAT MAKES A ROOM SPECIAL?

SA: Make the room useful! This photograph (bottom left) features a client's kitchen who wanted a small seating area instead of the traditional breakfast table. It was important to him that this space provided a fun, comfortable spot to hang out with his kids, friends, and just have fun and play guitar. Use a strong, unexpected accent color. The yellow table in this room really grabs your attention as a fun and interesting piece (just like the homeowner!). ML: WHAT KIND OF ACCENTS WORK?

SA: Choose items with patina. This antique kilim rug (right) looks like it has had some exciting adventures! It's worn surface adds texture and character to the room. ML: WE NEED INSPIRATION!

SA: Have fun! Don't take design too seriously! The pairing of the rough-and-tumble leather sofa with easy breezy plants creates a happy, carefree vibe. ML: WHAT ABOUT ART?

Anything framed well can be art. We've framed bobbleheads, maps, sketches, even some wildlife! Believe in what you love and it can be beautiful and tell your story. Make it personal. BalanceDesignAtlanta.com 678.984.5019 16

HUGH’S DAY (CON TI N U ED)

SGC: YOU'RE A DAD TO TWO BEAUTIFUL GIRLS. WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF THE PERFECT FATHER'S DAY?

HA: Just a day out with them is fine by me. Maybe a hike with some ham and cheese sandwiches and iced tea. They are amazing kids and to see them smile is the best thing ever. SGC: EMPIRE STATE SOUTH HAS AN AMAZING GARDEN PATIO AND YOU PROBABLY ARE HAPPY TO HANG OUT THERE ON YOUR DAY OFF IN MIDTOWN. WHERE ELSE DO YOU STOP, SHOP, PEOPLE WATCH AND VISIT IN MIDTOWN ATL?

HA: Midtown ATL is a very happening place these days. For coffee I love to go to my own Spiller Park Coffee cause well, DALE IS THE BEST PERSON EVER. Shopping, I love an afternoon trying on shoes I can't afford at Sid Mashburn. People watching is fun in Piedmont Park. And I do love a good cocktail at Grain. SGC: WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE MIDTOWN FOR YOUR ATLANTA OUTPOST?

HA: Tenth & Peachtree is literally the center of the city. It just made sense at the time we signed the lease. It bucks up to great neighborhoods and has an immense amount of live/work space right there. It is the epitome of modern ATL. SGC: TO ME, THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN GETTING A GIFT IS GIVING ONE. WHAT'S THE COOLEST PRESENT YOU'VE GIVEN TO SOMEONE RECENTLY?

HA: Probably a NASA Design book to my friend and chef Matt. It is the style/graphic design manual for NASA. Very cool. SGC: DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL SOUNDTRACK? WE WILL LISTEN TO IT NEXT TIME WE COOK.

HA: Husker Du, Fugazi, Glenn Gould playing Bach, Dilly Dally, The Afghan Whigs, Archers of Loaf, Younger Lovers, Roland Alphonso.

ohn and Lindsay have lived in their Midtown condo since they graduated from Georgia

Tech, working in banking (him) and for a tech start-up (her) and love everything about their central location. They hop on MARTA to get to work and to the airport. They cross over to Piedmont Park for runs after work and to go to the dog park as much as they can with their pup. They eat out more than they eat in and have season tickets to the Atlanta Symphony’s Delta Classical Series. Volunteering with the Piedmont Park Conservancy on various fund raisers, they have met other like-minded people who love living in and around Midtown. They don’t want to live anywhere else. But, they are outgrowing their condo, smartly purchased when the market favored new buyers. They want a newer home, with luxury amenities in a residential development that appeals to their authentic lifestyle and love of Midtown. “These buyers are like most of the 150-plus who are on board thus far at No2 Opus Place. They want out of their older home but haven’t had gorgeous high rise options until now,” said Kerman Haynes, Vice President, CITY HAUS Developer Services & Midtown Office for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “And now, with our partner banks offering buyers access to equity in the homes they are selling to move to Opus, the move is attainable.” Haynes explains that after studying the current market, he and his team discovered condo owners like John and Lindsay were stuck. They had plenty of equity but often not the liquidity nor the desire to borrow on investments or 401k for the hefty deposit on a new condo. Plus there were no new upscale, boutique residences being built in Midtown. The Berkshire Hathaway team created a solution. Now, interested buyers can work with one of three lenders, Wells Fargo, HomeServices Lending or Brand Bank to access their equity for a deposit on their new home at No2

Parting Thoughts

T

om Murphy has been a restaurateur and wine aficionado in Atlanta for more than 35 years. You

can find him most days at his well known restaurant Murphy's, where Virginia Avenue and North Highland meet, and you can also find a fantastic gem of a wine shop there, too. Tom spent some time thinking about what the perfect wines would be for Father's Day week-

end. Here are his top five choices: 1. NV LAURENT-PERRIER BRUT, CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE PRICED AT $41.99

According to Tom this is an elegant man's Champagne. Crisp, clean and citrusy he would pair this with brunch dishes like Egg's Benedict or French Toast. It scores 91 points with Wine Enthusiast and is worth the splurge to treat Dad. 2. RED CAR ROSE, SONOMA, CALIFORNIA $24.99

Dry and aromatic, this is perfect for day drinking. Tom thinks this wine is perfect for a day at the pool, a picnic, or a backyard barbecue while watching the Braves Game. Flavors of tangerine oil, grapefruit and bing cherries, this is day drinking wine at its finest and affordable for a crowd. 3. ARGYLE RESERVE PINOT NOIR, 2014, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON $29.99

For Tom, this glass of pinot is perfect for a summer afternoon and early dinner. Served at cellar temperature, this would be his pick for an evening outside on a patio with grilled salmon and fresh vegetables from the local farmer's market. Toasted, rich and earthy with flavors of sweet cherry and red heart plum this is a silky wine with firm tannins and a well-bodied mouth feel. Practically the perfect pinot. 4. CHAPPELET MOUNTAIN CUVEE, NAPA VALLEY 2013 $34.99

This Napa Valley blend of the Bordeaux varietals is rich and enticing with layers of blueberries, blackberries, baking spice and toasted wood. Bay leaf, black pepper and a hint of dark chocolate can be found on the nose and Tom would suggest this be served with a nice steak from the grill or maybe even a Cuban cigar (it is Father's Day after all.) It drinks like a much more expensive wine than it actually is. 5. JORDAN CABERNET SAUVIGNON, ALEXANDER VALLEY, SONOMA $59.99

A wonderful expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, rich, elegant, fruit filled and well balanced, this wine would be the highlight of any Father's Day Dinner. Tom is a fan of this Bordeaux style cabernet sauvignon, that is crafted with care and with old world style in Sonoma, Calif. This is a wine that makes a statement with dinner or on its own. 34
