Lifestyle Letter

Hello There, NOVEMBER 2017

H

ave you voted yet? Everyone here at Midtown Lifestyle is pretty excited about our first ever Readers’ Choice contest, where you speak up and let the world know all your favorite places to shop, eat and do business in our community. This month, go to our website, click the link and vote for your fave. Winners will be splashed out in our February issue. Head to our website when you’re done reading this juicy issue and have your say! Voting ends 5 pm November 30 (which is my birthday, so I'll be celebrating, helping tally your votes...the next day).

In this issue, homeowners in a charming VaHi bungalow opened their doors to us to share a fabulous renovation. The home is also featured on the Virginia-Highlands Tour of Homes, December 2 and 3. Park your car and board a trolley shuttle at John Howell Park, the YWCA, or at any of the other five designated shuttle stops along the tour route. The YWCA is located at 957 N. Highland Ave. We can't wait to gain access to some of the most beautiful homes in our neighborhood and hope to see you there.

My home is full of our collections of books, vintage games, ancient Chinese checkerboards and cool old gumball machines. One of my favorite pieces of furniture is an antique Chinese trousseau cabinet we picked up when we lived in Hong Kong. The merchant explained that the bride's family would pack her personal items and collected home furnishings in this cabinet and her brothers would carry it to the happy couple's new home. We use it as a bar cabinet storing glassware and booze... perhaps my own personal trousseau? Cheers to a bright November.

The budding entrepreneurs noticed that their peers used the school libraries as a place to socialize. “That was our eureka moment,” says Chung.

“Our goal is to eventually be as big of a brand name as Tinder, SnapChat or Instagram,” says Garrett. “If we do that, we will be the first app to give edtech that coveted cool factor.”

Garrett adds, “Millennials love collaboration. What we created is the solution to a real but overlooked problem. Sometimes the most disruptive innovations are hiding in plain sight. We wanted to create the first swipe-based academic social network.” The Atlanta-based duo assembled the brightest and best they knew, including Garrett’s college classmate and creative mastermind Jawad Mazhir, based out of Midtown, and Chung’s coworker and creative director Erick Dauberger of Buckhead, and childhood friend and SEO specialist Richard Fendler, based in Marina del Rey, Calif. One of the last but most important additions to the team was millennial angel investor and expert salesman Anuj Thakkar of Midtown, who provided the first seed investment. Founders Garrett, an advertising copywriter, and Chung, a sales manager, both quit jobs to pour their energy into the launch of the StudyHubb app. The team tested the app at Georgia State University, where Mazhir just received his master’s in marketing, during the last week of the Spring semester. Citiside’s president Gabe Pierce took the house down to the studs, leaving only the solid brick fireplace standing.“ There is a lot of knowledge that goes into strategically demo-ing and rebuilding of a 70 year old home,” said Pierce. “We were involved in the project for several months before the project started and worked closely with Mark and the Flemings to come up with some of the finer finish details.” Designer Stephanie Andrews said they thoroughly enjoyed designing and creating a home filled with beautiful architectural details and lots of natural light, focusing on opening up the floor plan, adding square footage, and having an indoor-outdoor living space. The enclosed sunroom was restored to the original front porch, and a cabin like screened-in porch was added to the back to expand the feel of the great room and has turned into the family’s favorite space. Both the front porch and the upstairs bedroom provide views of downtown Atlanta while the master suite offers treetop views with expansive windows creating of blend of city and serene living. “Deirdre and I collaborated together on virtually every decision, from paint colors, tile, molding, flooring, lighting, and flow,” said Andrews. “Even her wide plank floors had a natural finish to eliminate the VOC's in the home. We started there and then added layers of bronze in her lighting and natural wool in her rugs. It had to be comfortable and easy to handle their young children. 22

Lastly we added to her art collection, to be able to have art that really sang to her heart.” It was very important for the Flemings to improve indoor air quality and to use non-toxic materials, such as mineral based

so we opted for LED lighting, WaterSense plumbing fixtures, a tankless water heater, Energy Star efficient appliances, and proper insulation.” said Deirdre Fleming. “We spent a lot of time researching the various components of building a green home, and Gabe was amenable to incorporating these products and helped us make some tough choices along the way.” Deirdre Fleming was actively involved in the renovation process, and was at the house once or twice a day to communicate with the team. “I enjoyed learning how a house is built, and it was helpful to be on site to answer questions or to see how the project was coming together.” All of the designers, craftsmen and builders agreed that indeed the project came together beautifully, resulting in a home with character, inside and out. A New Kind of Dentist AN INTERVIEW WITH INTOWN SMILE STUDIO'S DR. SUSAN ESTEP ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS ML: YOUR REVIEWS FROM PATIENTS ARE FULL OF PRAISE FOR THE UNIQUE TOTAL WELLNESS CARE YOU PROVIDE. WHAT ARE A FEW LINKS BETWEEN DENTAL HEALTH AND COMMON AILMENTS THAT PEOPLE MAY BE SURPRISED TO KNOW? SE: There are several important health links which can be

impacted by the health of your mouth, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pregnancy, infertility, Alzheimer’s, cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. A major contributor is inflammation. Periodontal disease spreads inflammation throughout the body. In addition to the inflammatory link, periodontal disease is a bacterial infection. And, we now know mouth-specific bacteria can cause a heart attack/stroke and are closely linked to the other diseases. We offer a simple saliva genetic test that will reveal if you have any of these bacteria, and we have non-invasive (and non-drug) treatments to eliminate the bad bacteria. This is just the tip of the iceberg in oral systemic diseases. ML:

INNOVATED TECHNIQUES. TELL US ABOUT A FEW THAT PATIENTS WILL BENEFIT FROM. SE: There are several techniques and products that we

use that aren’t found in most dental practices. One of the advancements that we love, and have been using for a number of years now, is perio trays to treat gum disease. It’s a tray system that’s an alternative to deep scaling and root planning of the teeth. You wear trays carrying a patented gel over your teeth for 10 or 15 minutes a day. The gel kills the bacteria deep in the pockets eliminating the infection and allowing your gums to heal themselves. Another advanced technology we use is our top of the line ultra low dose x-ray system. We are able to take most x-rays without having to place a bulky, uncomfortable sensor in your mouth. If you have a gag reflex and dread dental x-rays, you will love this new and better method. Another new technology we recently added is ozone therThe mod office at Intown Smile Studio and the gadgets each patient enjoys during treatment. There's individual monitors mounted on the the ceiling. Catch up on your stories or listen to Spotify. 26

apy. We use ozone in many applications in our integrative dental medicine approach. Ozone can kill infections, remineralize teeth, treat periodontal disease, desensitize teeth, boost the immune system, treat herpetic lesions/

cold sores and ulcers, and we use it in all of our dental equipment lines to keep them sterile. ML: MY HUSBAND HAS A PHOBIA ABOUT GOING TO DENTIST. WHAT CAN YOUR OFFICE DO TO HELP? SE: One of our specialty niches is treating people with dental anxiety

and phobia. We spent years studying the many root causes of negative dental experiences. We have identified and eliminated those things from our practice. We intentionally created a place where dental visits are easy, unstressful, and even relaxing! Our dental practice doesn’t look like a typical dental office. When you walk in the door and smell the light fragrance of lavender, you experience a non-threatening and relaxing environment. We spend a few minutes getting to know you in a comfortable consult room where we discuss your dental needs, dental and medical history, goals for your health, and you have the opportunity to get to know your hygienist before starting with any treatment. Our team members are nonjudgmental, people pleasers and experienced, skilled caregivers. During your appointments, we’re always checking in with you to be sure you’re comfortable. You’ll have your own set of wireless headphones and can choose from movies, TV or music on your own screen. ML: THIS OFFICE IS SO SOPHISTICATED. WHAT DOES YOUR APPOINTMENT LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE A KID IN THE CHAIR? SE: We love kids. Your children’s experience is especially

important and can impact them positively or negatively for years ahead. Recent advancements in children’s dentistry provides our team the opportunity to deliver minimally-invasive options like reversing cavities and alternatives to general anesthesia, sedation, and stainless steel crowns. Our dedicated kid zone gives us a chance to observe and modify their brushing and flossing technique while they get to try different brushes and flossers of their choice. We also include a science experiment that has a nutritional component to help them avoid cavities and make healthy lifestyle choices. We make the experience fun and educational. We wrap up the appointment with the hygienist’s clean and polish, and then I spend a few fun minutes with the children checking in on their world before proceeding with their checkup exam.

Parting Thoughts ARTICLE BEN HAMMETT-WALKUSKI

M

y mother was the poster child for gratitude. Although her life was short in years—just shy of 55—it was long in won-

der, miracles and thanksgiving. Born into the postwar prosperity of the 1950s, she came of age in the tumultuous 60s, graduated from a small liberal arts school in the Midwest, and entered the work force in the equal rights era of the 1970s. A young woman of relative privilege, my mother witnessed how challenging life was for many people and took it on as her challenge in life: how can I help others? She found her passions in special education and mental health, dedicating her career to helping people. She would also find love, marriage, motherhood, and divorce. As a single mother of the 1980s and 90s, my mother pursued a meaningful career, relationships, a master’s degree, and a move one state over. Just as she was settling into a remarkable balancing act, which included nurturing her budding TV newscaster/architect/trumpeter/actor/comedian son, the call came to move back home since her aging mother’s independence started to decline. Her life now repurposed as caregiver to the generation after her and before her, my mother took the opportunity to plant a

garden, join the symphony chorus, read to the blind, establish a spring art show at our church, practice yoga, make jewelry, and show her son the world. In 2001, my mother was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer, which she was proud to have caught early thanks to Katie Couric’s colonoscopy advocacy, and she proudly beat it. We celebrated with a trip to Europe, I soon graduated from high school and my mother was an empty nester. It was my junior year of college when my mother’s cancer returned, but this time it was stage four and things were different. There seemed to be less fighting this time around and more waiting. She soon had to stop working, stop caring for my grandmother and preserve her precious energy only for what was absolutely necessary. She treasured hard laughter, combing the beaches of Cape Cod for heart-shaped

rocks and the company of best friends in her final years. It wasn’t long before the call came for me to move back home, and for me to take on the role of caregiver. I don’t think anyone can ever be prepared to care for a dying parent, but I know that I sure felt too young and way unprepared. As I sat at her bedside in those final quiet evenings, going through boxes of old records to pass the time, feeling her soft hands run through my hair, it was hard to know what to feel. I do know there was something deep within her—a guiding light, a spiritual compass, a servant’s heart, grace beyond measure, gratitude without end—that needed to live on so that not all of her would be gone. When she did go, her arms were wide open and a journal was nearby. She had left behind some final words for me. “Be grateful,” she wrote. And I am. Grateful for everything.
