WE WORK HARD TO FIND YOU THE PERFECT HOME. SOMETIMES, ALL THAT GLITTERS REALLY IS GOLD.
Is summer almost over? I can’t believe it’s August! As we’re enjoying the last few weeks without a school schedule and maybe that last family vacation, we’re preparing for the new season ahead with kids, grandkids, and, yes, even our pets!
August means a lot to me because it is my birth month, and I always got excited about having friends and family members nearby for celebrations! On the weekends, my dad’s grilled hamburgers with cheese on top and my mom’s fried okra and blackberry cobbler made me a happy camper. Those were the days when we would all unwind and relax together while our Irish Setter waited with intense delight for any morsel of food to drop to the floor!
Welcome to our Kids and Pets Issue! This one was a lot of fun putting together for you! From new emergency vet services and safe pest control to children’s cooking classes, dance moves that inspire, dentistry for that amazing back-to-school smile, and local dogs in the limelight, we hope you’ll sit back and enjoy these last dog days of summer-pun intended!
Here’s to finishing the summer with more swimming, hiking, and biking, as well as seeing the latest movie in the air conditioning, going to museum exhibits, and enjoying the fireflies in the backyard as you grill YOUR family’s favorite foods and love on your chosen kids and pets!
All the best,

To reverse things after struggling to keep tenants, Stony Point Fashion Park recently applied for ABC's commercial lifestyle center license, allowing restaurant tenants to serve to-go alcoholic drinks. If the permit is approved, customers could carry and drink alcohol in the mall's public areas but not in the parking lots. Participating tenants must serve the beverages in to-go cups branded with the establishments' names or logos. The mall is hoping for approval by the end of this summer.

Dentist Dr. Lynn Booth Offers Helpful Tips on How Best to Care for Children’s Teeth
Going to the dentist can be a terrifying experience, especially for children. With strange tools and noises echoing through the hallways, the anticipation is unnerving. However, this scenario is difficult to imagine at Penterson and Booth Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. Owned by Drs. Stephen and Lynn Booth, Penterson and Booth has been serving the Midlothian area for forty-two years. From its recently renovated office and expansion with a stylish and welcoming vibe to the cheerful disposition of dentist Dr. Lynn Booth, Penterson and Booth is the perfect place for children (and adults!) to feel comfortable and confident while receiving dental treatments.
Regarding pediatric dentistry, Dr. Lynn Booth explains that a child’s first dental appointment should be as they start to get their first tooth. Since cavities, cavity prevention, and developmental issues are the top parental concerns, Dr. Booth says, “This time is the ideal opportunity for us to guide and teach parents the proper way to care for their children’s teeth.” Furthermore, children should have their first dental x-ray to search
for cavities once their second primary molars have fully erupted and a childsized x-ray sensor can fit comfortably in their mouth. For a panorex x-ray to check for growth and development, children should be 6-7 years old.
Unsurprisingly, cavities are the most problematic dental problem in children. Dr. Booth recommends avoiding starchy foods filled with carbohydrates like bread, pasta, rice, and crackers to maintain healthy and strong teeth. When morsels of starchy, high-carbohydrate foods get stuck between teeth, they convert into simple sugars, which results in a higher risk of cavities and enamel erosion. Limiting exposure to sugary drinks, having milk at mealtimes, and drinking water throughout the day also benefit teeth.
Good brushing habits help establish a routine early on, making it easier for children to follow a regimen and carry it into their teen years and beyond. Children should brush their teeth at least twice daily or after each meal, like adults. Interestingly, less is more in the case of toothpaste. Children ages 0-9 should use a ricesized amount of toothpaste, with
0-3-year-olds using a finger slip toothbrush and 3-9-year-olds using a soft bristle child-sized toothbrush. Older children, ages 10+, need only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste with an adult-sized toothbrush. Toothpaste should always be fluoride-free until children can appropriately spit the toothpaste out.
Dr. Lynn, her husband, and three associates strive to offer a relaxed experience at Penterson and Booth and continue enhancing their one-on-one interactions with their patients. They educate their patients about dental problems and treatment to help them make smart choices regarding their health and well-being. If you are searching for a new family dentist, especially one fantastic with children, look no further than Penterson and Booth. You'll be glad you did!

“I never liked going to the dentist until I decided to come to Penterson and Booth. I needed somewhere for me and my family; it was the perfect place! Just an overall great experience. Very thorough, thoughtful, and kind. They are so nice to my threeyear-old, cautious and gentle—a very comfortable place for the entire family.” -N.M.
“Amazing experience! Everyone was so good with our child and helped her to feel calm during her procedure. The dentist followed up with us later that day and took great care to make sure we knew we could reach out with any questions or concerns. Couldn’t be happier with our experience!!”
While in the waiting room of an urgent care facility for himself, veterinarian Dr. Jim Dobies realized that animals also require immediate care when an injury or illness is not severe enough for the emergency room but profound enough that they shouldn’t wait for regular veterinary hours. Soon after, Dr. Dobies created UrgentVet in his home of Charlotte, North Carolina, and it became the first dedicated urgent care clinic for pets. Since then, UrgentVet has opened forty-four locations across the United States, and in late spring, Virginia was lucky enough to land two locations in Midlothian and Short Pump.
In the past, when a primary vet has been closed, pet parents had no other option but to take their dog or cat to a vet emergency room, often left to pay an expensive bill. But with UrgentVet, pet parents can rest easy knowing affordable and compassionate services are available 365 days a year, even nights, weekends, and holidays. UrgentVet bridges the gap between general practices and 24-hour emergency vets with more reasonable rates than the costs associated with an emergency vet. With all its clinics, UrgentVet strives to develop strong connections with neighboring primary care veterinarians, keeping them involved in their patient's care. Approximately 90% of pets seen at UrgentVet are treated on-site and referred to their regular vet with a detailed letter and records for follow-up care.
Dr. Dobies genuinely enjoys building close relationships with pets and pet parents. Wishing to bring that same vibe to UrgentVet, Dr. Dobies strongly emphasizes a welcoming environment with compassion at the forefront. Going to the vet can be a stressful experience for both pets and parents. Dr. Dobies ensures that UrgentVet is a comfortable place for all, allowing pets and pet parents to remain together the entire exam. Other luxuries include non-slip flooring, soft lighting, soothing colors, gentle music, and quiet exam lift tables. Even more, Midlothian and Short Pump staff members are Fear-Free certified professionals, ready to care for pets' physical and emotional needs.
Parents can register their pet online and quickly schedule a visit with the bonus of staying home until UrgentVet professionals alert them via text message twenty minutes before the appointment. There are also convenient check-in kiosks in each facility's lobbies to expedite the check-in process. Like all UrgentVet locations, the Midlothian and Short Pump clinics include in-house laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment, including digital radiography and ultrasound technology.
With Midlothian to the south and Short Pump to the north, the two centers provide easy access for Richmond's western suburbs, including Glen Allen, Tuckahoe, Bon Air, and others throughout Henrico and Chesterfield Counties. "Every new clinic is exciting, but opening our doors for the first time in a new state is always a little extra special," says Dr. Dobies. "The Richmond community has been very welcoming, nothing short of spectacular, and we can't wait to show our new neighbors the level of care and commitment we can provide to pets in need." This July, Dr. Dobies opened another location in the Carytown area of Richmond.
“UrgentVet was drawn to the Richmond market due to its size and pet-loving communities. We immediately knew it fit our practice model perfectly.” - Dr. Jim Dobies

LEGACY SCHOOL OF DANCE IS THE PREMIER STUDIO IN SUPPORTING YOUR CHILDREN’S DANCE DREAMS
For thirteen years, Legacy School of Dance has had the honor of highlighting its talented dancers at an annual end-of-year recital. Each dancer's diligent effort and commitment shine through year after year, from the adorable tiny dancers to the graceful, poignant teenagers. “Being at Legacy for twelve years has fueled my daughter's passion for dance while teaching her the importance of hard work and dedication,” says dance mom Cyreeta Price. “Legacy has been a place where my daughter has been nurtured and cared for from the very beginning. The teachers and other dancers are truly like family, and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else!”
A passion project for co-owners Kimberly Ligatti and Mary Farr-Maynard, Legacy offers ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, musical theater, and lyrical instruction. “Our instructors, with diverse backgrounds in dance, are truly the heart and soul of the studio,” Kimberly explains. “They are the ones who create the lessons and pour their passion into each class.” Dancers can start as young as two years old, learning language development, back-and-forth conversations, and following directions through creative movement and music. "My oldest daughter started at Legacy when she was just three years old," says dance mom Erin Broughton. "She is now going into her eighth year of dance, and my four-year-old daughter has
been dancing with Legacy for three years! My girls are safe, happy, supported, and pushed to be the best they can be when they’re there.”
Kimberly and Mary encourage all children new to their studio to participate in a trial class to ensure Legacy and its instructors fit the needs of each dancer before committing to a full year. Combination classes, like tap and ballet, are great options for the youngest dancers to experience to determine further what type of dance they like best. Legacy has created in-depth programs for older dancers in every style so that each dancer can pursue their own path. "It is our greatest joy to see our dancers develop into young adults. Our main goal is to support each dancer with where they are, their desire,
and creating a program for them," Kimberly says. "By doing this, we see many dancers grow from the youngest ages and graduate high school."
Legacy School of Dance offers more than an annual recital, from competition teams to summer camps and intensives to parent sneak peeks during the regular season. In addition to being a place of learning, Legacy is a place for fun! Some dancers take dance solely for exercise or pleasure but want to pursue something other than a dance career. That is perfectly fine with Kimberly and Mary. They welcome dancers of all
experience levels to their studio and vow to help them on their journey, whatever that may be! “We love what we do and are thankful that we have such great families to share in this journey,” Kimberly says.
Legacy School of Dance is located at 2441 Colony Crossing Place in Midlothian. To learn more about the upcoming 2023-2024 season, schedule a trial class, or discover the studio's complete list of classes, call (804) 272-9152 or email danceatlegacy@gmail. com. “Our number one focus is to meet the students where they are. We have highly competitive dancers looking to study dance in college or even as a profession. We aim to support their dreams and help them on their journey.”
- Kimberly R. Ligatti
“Our family has been at Legacy School of Dance for eleven years. My daughters have thrived at Legacy. They have learned excellent dance techniques in a variety of dance styles. The teachers are loving, kind, and supportive while challenging the dancers to improve. My daughters have created very close friendships at Legacy and love being at the studio. As members of the Legacy dance team, they have had the opportunity to take their dancing to a higher level. They love dancing at the dance competitions and the end-of-theyear recital. Our oldest, now a senior in college, still misses dancing at Legacy. We will be forever grateful for all that Mary, Kim, and the rest of the dance instructors have done for our daughters.” -Kimberly
Phillips“Legacy School of Dance is a fantastic dance studio. The instructors are attentive and caring and work hard to ensure every dancer reaches their highest potential. Kim and Mary are incredibly enthusiastic, and their energy is passed on to their staff and dancers. The studio has a wonderful family feel that brings everyone together. Both of my girls have developed a genuine love for dance. Their technique and ability to pick up choreography improved rapidly from year to year. They enjoy being part of a cohesive group dedicated to a common goal. I attribute all of this to Legacy and the environment that Kim and Mary have created. My daughters' lives have been greatly enriched by being a part of the family at Legacy School of Dance.” -Tarsha

It's often said that "dogs are a man's best friend," and we can all agree that truer words have never been spoken. If you've had the pleasure of gaining such a companion, then you know exactly what this means. Dogs are the most loyal, loving friends you'll ever have, from simple walks and much-needed cuddles to being present for significant milestones. In celebration of Midlothian Lifestyle and Short Pump City Lifestyle 's Kids and Pets issue, staff, partners, and readers have submitted photos of their dogs for a chance to show off their beloved furry friends.
Here's a special "thank you" to everyone who contributed photos, especially Midlothian Lifestyle and Short Pump City Lifestyle partners: Dog Training Elite Richmond, Ashton Creek, Greer Jones, ameriCARE of Richmond, RVA Design Group, InnoVitamin Solutions, Paragon Construction, Richmond Surgical Arts, and DRIPBaR Richmond. Chef Ann Butler of 21 Spoons, a Midlothian restaurant recently crowned “Best Locally Owned Restaurant in Virginia” by Southern Living Magazine, is more than a local chef cooking up fresh and tasty food. She is also the proud owner of Edible Education, a culinary program designed to get kids excited about preparing real food through classes, enrichment programs, camps, birthday parties, and events. With Edible Education locations in Midlothian and Stony Point Fashion Park and two officially authorized locations in Atlanta as a test run for franchises, Ann hopes to reach and inspire children with fresh food, cooking techniques, and nutrition.
As a former Culinary Arts teacher, Ann was disappointed in the poor food choices her teenage students often made. She realized schools should educate kids much earlier than high school about food and nutrition. Starting in her garage, Ann launched Edible Education, working with local farmers to bring seasonal fresh foods to schools. In addition to supplying select
schools with top-quality lunches, Ann founded the Kitchen a la Cart, a portable teaching kitchen business to utilize in schools. “Kids in forty-five states are getting excited about real food,” says Ann. “Most days, it is amazing. We get to cook with kids all day, and that is an enjoyable mission!”
Ann believes every child under age twelve should learn to prepare at least eighteen recipes. “We treat all our students like they are going to be chefs one day. They are either going to ‘chef’ for their families, in a part-time job, or a future career,” Ann explains. “This drives professionalism home, and if a child doesn’t like a particular food, we ask them to try it to expand their palates so they might know how to make it different for their guests.” Edible Education prides itself on never doing for a child what they know how to do for themselves.
Whether camp, classes, after-school curriculums, or parties, Edible Education has a program for every child. Their chefs travel to schools throughout the school year to instruct kids enrolled in after-school activities. For children looking to come to Edible Education, courses start for those as young as three. Additionally, when school closes for breaks and holidays, Edible Education is open! Camp C.H.E.F. is available for ages 6-14 and operates Monday through Friday during the summer. Children can also host a fun and memorable birthday party at the Stony Point Fashion Park location, choosing from four different themes for up to ten guests.
Ann says, “Our most popular camp is So You Want to Open a Bakery.” The camp consists of three sessions, and the classes range from breakfast pastries to master mix cookies and triple-tiered cakes. At the end of each session, the families come to their child’s “bakery,” where their child can show off their uniquely-named bakery, selected colors, fake money, and invitations. Edible Education offers So You Want to Open a Restaurant for the more serious kids. Each day is
“As a former high school culinary arts teacher, I saw many teens think junk food was an appropriate breakfast. After reading a CDC study that stated that if kids under age 12 receive just 50 hours of nutrition education, it can change how they think about food, I knew I had to reach a younger crowd, so I started Edible Education!” - Ann Butler
a competition, and the winning team gets to run their dish as a special at 21 Spoons. Ann says this is a truly empowering and well-deserved experience for the kids.
From teaching culinary classes with two of her high school students to teaching summer classes and training new teachers around the United States due to the successful Kitchen a la Cart, Ann has continued to grow Edible Education into a fun, hands-on, and genuinely enlightening program for children. “We truly never do for a child, what we know they can do for themselves,” Ann explains. “We never intended this to happen, but Edible Education has four Food Network child stars! All kids can cook, truly.”
