Planning is Underway for the Reuse of Old Matoaca Elementary Matoaca District Supervisor Kevin Carroll hosted a follow-up meeting to his October 2022 meeting to discuss concepts for the reuse of Matoaca Elementary School. The proposal called for retaining the school building by redeveloping it for senior housing and bringing community park and recreation amenities to the grounds. Staff from the county’s Community Enhancement, Parks and Recreation, and General Services departments presented information and answered questions during the community meeting held on January 10, 2023.

A Better World Gracie Etherington is a Collegiate School sophomore who pursues numerous interests in art, history, sociology, and language arts. She also enjoys playing co-ed indoor soccer at school and with the Richmond Strikers. Gracie has been spending her time this winter like many of her peers – hanging out with friends, listening to music while studying or working out, and skiing whenever she has the chance – but she is not your average teenager. Gracie describes herself as “an adventurous and outgoing person who loves to create memories with other people and experience new things no matter how challenging they

may be.” She applies these qualities to her work with the 2023 Student Visionaries of the Year program where she is leading her team of fellow students to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). During their annual campaign, high school students who are passionate about volunteerism, philanthropy, and community engagement work together across seven weeks to raise money and awareness for the important work at LLS. What started out as an unexpected opportunity after being nominated by a family friend, has turned into a passion for

improving the health and lives of others both in her community and across the world. In addition to her regular academic, sports, and personal pursuits, Gracie has spent her fall and winter preparing for her team’s fundraising campaign, called Team Grace. “I’m passionate about the work our team is doing because I know far too many people who have suffered from leukemia, lymphoma, and other forms of cancer,” says Gracie. LLS is the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers. More than 1.3 million people in the US are either living with or in remission from blood cancer. In fact, blood cancers account for about 10 percent of all diagnosed cancers in the US each year. These types of cancers affect patients of all ages. Of particular concern are leukemias, which are the most common cancers in children under 15 years old and account for about 28% of all childhood cancers. While huge medical advances have been achieved across the past several decades, better treatment and prevention strategies continue to be needed. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. They do this through their medical research and by providing valuable support to patients and their families. “LLS’s environment is very accepting and supportive,” says Gracie. “The staff is wonderful, and they present their mission to the community in a loving and caring way.” According to the LLS website, “Since 1949, [LLS] has invested more than $1.5 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative approaches.”

LLS’s research and work also extend beyond blood cancers. “More than 40% of new cancer treatment drugs approved by the FDA since 2004 originally started as blood cancer treatments,” explains Gracie. In addition to funding medical research, the money raised for LLS helps fund blood transfusions and other treatments for patients who lack the financial means to support their recovery. “I have seen patients and family go through stressful and draining treatments for cancer,” says Gracie. “It drives me to want to participate in the campaign in the best way that I can.” LLS enables Gracie to gain essential skills and knowledge as she works to help others. Team Grace’s fundraising campaign will be live from February 1 to March 24, 2023. They will be reaching out to donors, sponsors, and businesses by email, text, mail, and in person. Her team will also be hosting fundraising dinners and school events to help raise money during their campaign. At the grande finale, the winning team who has raised the most money during the fundraising period will be announced and earn the title National Students of the Year. “My teammates and I believe our efforts can make a real difference,” says Gracie. “Hopefully, together, we can one day rid the world of cancer.” To support Team Grace’s efforts, visit their fundraising page: events.lls.org/va/svoyrichmond23/ getherington. We all know the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” but perhaps a better way of saying it would be, “A picture is worth a thousand memories.” Philip Andrews, founder of Philip Andrews Photography, understands that photography is about more than simply snapping a beautiful photo; it’s about capturing a moment in time. Philip has been fascinated with cinema and photography ever since he was a young child. “I received my first camera as a child and would make silly little movies with friends,” reminisces Philip. As an adult, he picked up photography initially as a hobby. He started out photographing landscapes and portraits of his wife. “Eventually a friend asked if I’d want to photograph their family and I fell in love with it,” explains Philip. “October of 2021, I made the jump to being a full-time photographer and I couldn’t be happier.” Now, he serves a wide range of clients across Richmond through his photography business including weddings, engagement, maternity, family, lifestyle, and real estate. Every parent knows all too well the challenge of getting great family photos, especially when they involve multiple young children. Simply getting everyone in one place and looking at the camera is an accomplishment in and of itself! To ensure a successful family photoshoot, Philip starts with a consultation where he gets to know his clients (usually the parents) and learns about their vision and goals for their photos. Pablo Talamante Shares his Love of Music and Country

Pablo Talamante is Midlothian’s very own local celebrity. Trained as an operatic singer, meaning one who studies the bel canto vocal technique, Pablo has over 30 years of stage experience in both Concert and Opera in the US and abroad. This award-winning, Spanish-Mexican singer and actor has built an impressive resume! He has been requested by the White House to perform for the last six US presidents, sung for her majesty Queen Sofia of Spain at the United Nations, worked alongside world-renowned conductors and pianists, and acted in commercials, tv shows, and big-screen movies such as Conan the Destroyer and Dune while living in Mexico City. Across his 27 years as a military singer, Pablo also served in the U.S. Army on an active duty status and was highly decorated, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG). During his military career, he was always a “best foot forward” singer for the Army and functioned as a musical ambassador of song to many foreign dignitaries. This includes performing our National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” hundreds of times at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes, the U.S. Capitol, the State Department, the Justice Department, the White House, and many other federal entities. His retirement from active duty in February 2021 has allowed him to devote himself full-time to his singing and acting career. Pablo recently met with Midlothian Lifestyle to discuss his experiences as a tenor and what the art of opera means to him.

LAUREL: WHEN DID YOU BEGIN SINGING FOR OTHERS? PABLO: I have been singing in one form or another since I was seven years old. My father would ask me to sing for his friends before the

boxing matches on tv on Saturday evenings. I remember those evenings as if it was yesterday. One of those fights had the invincible Cassius Clay (a.k.a. Muhammad Ali), as we knew him then. Later on, I would enter singing contests in middle school. I eventually played in a high school rock band and also in a country music trio. I was a vocalist with both groups while I played the guitar, piano, and drums. It was not until my senior year of high school that I started singing in a local restaurant as the evening entertainment showcase. That was my first professional engagement in front of an audience that had paid to hear me sing. It was terrifying in the beginning!

LAUREL: HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR LOVE OF OPERA? PABLO: Opera was not on my radar whatsoever until the age of 20 when I attended Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) in Mexico City because the tenor was a friend of mine from my hometown in Mexico. I could not believe what I had just witnessed. Here before my eyes was the complete art form in one venue! There was painting, sculpture, architecture, poetry, music, theater, literature, and dance! I quite vividly remember how my life changed in a matter of minutes and thought to myself, “This is it! This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

LAUREL: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING AN OPERATIC TENOR? PABLO: The feeling of stepping out on the theater stage, giving life to a character other than my own, and to sincerely apply everything that I had studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Drama School to that character on stage,

was the most rewarding feeling I have ever had. The voice is a delicate yet strong instrument if guided and cared for wisely. When the singing voice relies on the diaphragmatic breath, it takes on a life of its own, an identity separate from my own. It works perfectly when left alone, without manipulation or tension. Two delicate membranes vibrating, producing a range of sounds throughout the musical scale that makes the audience feel a range of emotions unequal to any other musical instrument. The human voice is unique in that sense because the singer is the actual instrument, and how we treat ourselves, how we live our lives and treat others, reflects what sound we will emit from our

voice. The upper register of a tenor is also exhilarating. The high notes produce a pulsating-throbbing rush of adrenaline in my body as well as those in the audience who experience the vibration, the excitement! Back in the day, the Italians called that feeling, “the cry of the wolf.” A sound emitted with abandonment. Singers such as Franco Corelli, Mario del Monaco, Giuseppe Giacomini, Luciano Pavarotti and others had it.

LAUREL: IN WHAT WAYS DOES OPERA SPEAK THROUGH YOU? PABLO: My journey as an operatic singer has been my entire life’s love. Our life is in a way an opera; it contains several acts (chapters), some acts have tragedies in it, other acts a bit of comedy, some have

intense romantic episodes while others bring despair or confusion. Yet other acts bring immense happiness. How we live our own stories will determine how successful we, the composers of that playwright/opera, are. When I perform an Aria (a song depicting a self-reflecting moment during the opera), the character takes life. At that very moment, the character is alive and speaks through the voice. We, the singers, have to give way to the character in order to be successful in rendering true existence to that character.

LAUREL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS AN OPERA SINGER. PABLO: I have stepped onto many major operatic stages, either with professional or amateur companies of opera and/or orchestras in the US and abroad. Every time is a different experience, a new sensation, a new adventure, a new journey of character. It’s like being born again every time. It’s a fascinating journey that takes you away from our daily, and often mundane, life. It’s an escape. One gets lots of endorphins, a dopamine feeling, a rejuvenating sensation. It happens almost immediately as the music begins. It is as if all of a sudden, the character is alive, and there is a shift in the time continuum. The music transports you into a different realm. It’s quite an amazing sensation. In a way, it’s an addicting career. Especially when it’s done well and the audience explodes with applause, affirming a life’s long work has been worth it.

LAUREL: WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? PABLO: My proudest achievement is not one per se, but many small ones. A singer, and a musician in general, is only as successful

as his last performance. One can have years of experience and an extensive repertoire “resume” throughout a career, but the audience remembers the last time the performer was heard. Was he or she good? That is what makes a musical career so different than other professions. It’s not about me, but about the story of a song, a character well played. Sincerity and humility are the core of what determines a singer’s degree of success. The public is very aware of a singer that is in love with him or herself rather than the message. I am a conduit of music and song, a messenger. That is all that I am while I sing. I would say that my proudest achievement is perhaps acknowledging my limitations as a performer, to stay true to the art form. I remember singing in front of the entire body of government in the Emancipation Hall inside the U.S. Capitol some years ago at a congressional gold medal recipient ceremony. At the end of my performance, everyone stood up and applauded with a tremendous thundering noise of cheers and accolades. Their applause went on for several minutes. I remember thinking, “I have done my job well,” and was proud of the effect that my singing brought to every individual there that day.

LAUREL: HOW DO YOU SHARE YOUR LOVE OF OPERA LOCALLY? PABLO: February is the month of Love. I love living in Virginia and the Richmond surrounding areas such as Midlothian and Powhatan. Many colleagues of mine seek success in major metropolitan cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, etc. where they can receive larger exposure to their singing. I love performing at beautiful residences

here in Richmond during private dinners, beautiful weddings, and other events where I am hired to sing. My song repertoire is very extensive, and I sing in several languages. I offer a variety of programs from which to choose. I love the United States and have also volunteered to sing for local charities and nonprofits to support their message. Some of them include the VCU Health Orchestra, The Fallen Outdoors (Iraq and Afghanistan vets), the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. American Inns of Court, and the Virginia Executive Mansion. During my years as a military singer, I had the honor to perform during presidential events and ceremonies such as for Purple Heart recipients, Holocaust Days of Remembrance survivors, and WWII units including the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders, the 65th Infantry Regiment “The Borinqueneers,” and the American Indian “Code Talkers.” I have been there, witnessing and partaking in history, performing for such amazing men and women of this honorable Nation we call the United States. Chef Ann Butler, a former high school culinary arts teacher, discovered that educating teenagers about food and nutrition was much overdue. What started out as a venture to teach younger children about food, turned into a multi-dimensional company called The Edible Education Group. With four children’s schools in Richmond and Atlanta, a Midlothian restaurant called 21 Spoons, culinary kits sold through Etsy, and Kitchen a la Carts – portable, teaching kitchens sold across the country – Ann and The Edible Education Group are on a mission to get kids, educators, and everyone in between, excited about food! “I had no intention of opening a restaurant, but with everyone in town closing, I thought let’s create a pop-up space so all these chefs would have somewhere to call home.”-Ann Butler In 2010, Ann took off with Edible Education, a children’s culinary experience, offering chefs and cooking classes to nearby schools. After partnering with a non-profit, she was awarded a grant which allowed her to bring her business to five schools a month for three years while collecting data. As Ann’s business continued to grow, she could no longer teach her 60 students from Winterpock Elementary in her basement. She progressed to a 700-square-foot kitchen rental. With impressive endeavors along the way such as being one of the chefs in Michelle Obama’s Chefs Move to School program, implementing salad bars in Richmond Public Schools, attending a Food Changers party at the Governor’s Mansion, the opening of Edible Education in Midlothian, and leading the largest Food Revolution Day event with English Chef and restaurateur, Jamie Oliver, Ann’s success with food education was on the rise. Exhausted with transporting cooking gear throughout seven counties, Ann collaborated with a food cart designer to create a portable teaching kitchen, the Kitchen a la Cart. After touring the country to sell the carts in 2016, she moved to Missouri, upon being accepted to a business accelerator, where she obtained a patent and investors. Soon after, Ann relocated to Memphis to coordinate partnerships with Memphis Public Schools, Tilth, St. Jude's Hospital, and the University of Memphis. It was around this time that The Edible Education Group was named Top 10 Companies to Watch from Tech Day NYC (2017). After making her way back to Midlothian, Ann opened a second Edible Education located in Stony Point Fashion Park. At the same time, she also launched two facilities in Atlanta as authorized Edible Education schools to test the franchise model. As things continued in an upward direction, coronavirus came sweeping through America and everything changed. Ann explains, “surviving covid as a business owner was a huge risk – the uncertainty from day to day was unnerving and was approached on bended knee

often. As a children’s cooking school owner, I had no idea when we would see children again with no school on the horizon.” At the same time, the commercial real estate market was still good and Ann was offered the chance to lease the space next door to the Edible Education in Midlothian. While everyone in town was closing, Ann took the space, which happened to be a former restaurant and created a pop-up place for displaced chefs. Although she had no intention of opening a restaurant, Ann decided to do so with fellow chef, Bill Erlenbach, and 21 Spoons opened in March of 2021. After helping the restaurant take off, Chef Bill departed from 21 Spoons in July of 2022. Fast forward to today, 21 Spoons is named one of the South’s best local restaurants by Southern Living magazine. 21 Spoons was born under the same philosophy as the cooking school – good, seasonal, and real food with no artificial ingredients. The menu changes seasonally with delicious items like handmade pasta and soups, charcuterie boards, flatbreads, and more. Gluten free options are always available, even desserts! When customers first arrive at 21 Spoons, they are greeted by the host, Mark Pye, who escorts them to their tables with a fun champagne coupe name card. Ann and her staff make it a point to remember everyone, and they even hand out birthday and anniversary cards when they know guests are heading in for a special occasion. On the drink side of 21 Spoons, Taylre Lamendola, barkeeper extraordinaire, ensures the bar is up-to-date with the most recent cocktail trends. Last year’s trend was the Bacon Me Crazy Martini, followed by this year’s homemade marshmallows and smoking cool bourbon drinks. INGREDIENTS:

• 2 cups cooked quinoa (cooled and fluffed up) • 3 eggs • 1/3 cup of coconut milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1 ½ cup sugar • 1 cup cocoa powder • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Combine eggs, quinoa, milk, vanilla, olive oil, sugar, cocoa powder in a blender and puree. 3. Transfer to a mixing bowl and add baking powder, baking soda, and salt. 4. Pour into cupcake tin, tart pan or round cake pan that has been buttered and sprinkled with cocoa powder. 5. Bake for 20 – 35 minutes depending on pan. 6. Top with whipped cream or buttercream icing if desired.

Nestled in Powhatan village, the gastropub is laid-back with a welcoming front porch and two outdoor areas to accommodate your furry friends. Husband and wife team, John and Michelle Davenport, turned their captivation with distilled spirits into the first legal distillery in Powhatan. Michelle shared some drink, food, and fun happenings with Midlothian Lifestyle.

WHAT WAS THE NAMING OF THE BARSTOOLS? In response to customer feedback, we decided to upgrade to better, more comfortable stools. To help cover the cost, we held a raffle. Each of the six winners will have their name and a quote of their choice placed on a plaque, adhered to the back of the stool.
