The 11th Annual Backpacks of Love Golf Classic will hold its golf tourna ment on September 19, 2022 at the Foundry Golf Club. All proceeds from this charity event go directly to the production and distribution of back packs and food to school children in need. LAUREL: WHY DID YOU START COASTAL PATIO FURNITURE? MATT: In 2016 I was living here in Virginia as a professional firefighter. One day while I was at the dump, I noticed a dumpster full of patio furniture. I asked the attendant if it all got recycled and he said some of it does, but most gets crushed and thrown into a landfill. That was when the light bulb in my head went on. By November 2017, Coastal Patio Furniture was born. I am proud to say that we have saved approximately 300+ furniture sets from going to a landfill.

Every day when I start working, I feel like a kid again back in my aunt’s patio furniture repair shop in Florida. All the great mem ories come rushing back to me from summers years ago. Also, I get to meet and work with some truly amazing people and clients every day. The greatest part, though, is working alongside my wife and children. I am grateful that I get to spend time with them and teach my children a trade that I was taught.

LAUREL: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH HEALING TREE? MATT: I came across this organization while I was going to therapy. I realized how powerful this nonprofit is and will be in the future, so I contacted the founder, Marissa Ghavami, to learn more. We spent hours talking about our past struggles and road to recovery. I was blown away by how she was incorporating the issues that people face every day in the films that she was acting in and directing. As a huge movie buff, myself, I knew this was going to be extremely powerful and impactful to this gener ation. I told Marissa I want to help!

Frame refinishing: We disassemble all of the fur niture that is to be refinished by removing all of the nonmetal items, from plastic feet to fiberglass rocker plates. Once we have all of those removed, they are delivered to a metal refinisher that we have properly vetted to sandblast and powder coat all the metal components. After a new finish is applied, we reassemble it with new parts.

We use multiple vendors and have access to hundreds of replacement pieces and parts for all the leading brands of out door furniture. Swivel chair not turning? Rocking chair not rock ing? Missing or have a broken bolt? End caps gone? Feet on a chair or table ground down? We will take care of all of that!

Ashley: I really like to listen to my customer to learn about what she wants in her wardrobe. I take her sug gestions along with my own personal intuition and create an idea of what I want the next seasons offer ings to be. With these ideas, I go on travel about once a month or so to various fashion markets, showrooms, and design studios to purchase the next looks for my store. I love New York the most, but I also go to LA, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Miami. I do much of my inter national purchasing from Italy, Turkey, and Australia. I also look for designers close to home. Virginia has some amazingly talented designers that I have fallen in love with.

Very Ashley is literally me. Every outfit, every single item, everything is literally an idea that I had in my mind that came to life. The store is my literal closet. I wear everything I sell.

Laurel: Who is your primary customer?

I love how a simple dress or a pair of shoes can bring people together from all walks of life, spark political and policy debates and also be the source of income for people worldwide. Fashion is so much more than clothes and I love digging into that aspect of it.

Ashley: Very Ashley serves the woman who is unapologetically feminine. However, she’s also the beauty and the boss of her life. Most of my customers are women somewhere between 30-50 who love to go out for a night on the town, travel, shop, dine out and basically, who love to live lavishly. Because of this, I offer a wide selection of event and occasional dresses. My girl also loves to stand out. She would never want to be caught dead in the same outfit as someone else. She wants something unique. So, I try to provide that for her as well.

Ashley: I love everything about fashion. I love the clothes, the fabrics, and the colors. But what I really love most is the industry and the business of fashion.

MIKE: Luxury is a mindset.… The best way I can describe luxury is you have one subset of people who are only concerned with going from point A to point B. And then you have another subset of people who are concerned with how they get from point A to point B. And that is luxury… it’s all about the experi ence, the journey not necessarily about the destination.

LAUREL: WHAT’S YOUR PROCESS FOR PICKING OUT THE NEXT PIECE FOR YOUR COLLECTION? MIKE: There are two ways of going about collecting. There’s covering your staple maisons, as in your Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin... those are the major players out there. And then you have your more boutique maisons that may not be as high level of production as those four I mentioned but are still very highly regarded in the watch community. Some col lectors will build out their staple pieces, so they’ll build out their Rolex collections… or their Patek Philippe collections… or their AP collections and so on and so forth. And then some will just get two or three of those pieces each and then they’ll dive into their more boutique maisons. Me, I’m kind of doing both. I still have watches on my list of those four staples, but then also if I see a watch that really speaks to me just because I like the way it looks or there’s a really cool story behind it with a lesser, well known maison then I’ll definitely buy that as well.

LAUREL: HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WEAR ONE OF THE WATCHES FROM YOUR COLLECTION?

MIKE: Oh, I feel absolutely fantastic! I feel amazing. There is another subset of people who unfortunately dress or buy these things specifically for other people. In my opinion, the right way is that you do it for yourself. You do it because you enjoy it. You do it because you like it. LAUREL: IN WHAT WAYS IS YOUR STYLE AN EXTENSION OF YOURMIKE:PERSONALITY? My style emulates to people is that I take pride in my appearance, I take pride in my work, and I take pride in myself. LAUREL: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? MIKE: One of the things I love about luxury is understated lux ury. You can definitely get ostentatious with luxury, or you can be more subdued and subtle. I’m more of a subdued and subtle type, to where if you put on a platinum Rolex and you go out to eat and somebody looks at it and it looks just like a steel watch, but it could be a $15,000 watch. But to the person who knows that you have six figures on your wrist… if you know, you know.

MIKE: What appeals to me about watches is the fact that they say a statement without saying the actual statement. Whether it’s a measure of style, a measure of success, an accomplishment… but then also how unique they can be. There are some, what they call, “piece unique” watches which are just one of one. To have the only one in the world of that is just phenomenal. Then lastly, I’d say is the stories that can be behind it... whether it’s a very famous or interesting person wearing that watch, or it could be styled after a certain individual or an event. There are some watches that have actual meteorite in them or some watches that have the actual piece of the Titanic in them. Stuff like that is pretty cool.

Amber Hansen of Glow Envy Med Spa in Midlothian met with Midlothian Lifestyle to discuss the importance of tak ing care of yourself, especially if you’re a busy mom. Here’s what she had to say. Before I started the spa, I was an RN and mom with young babies trying to work opposite shifts of my husband’s schedule so we could be home as much as possible with our kids. I was so tired and worn out. My sweet husband started encouraging me to find something that could fill my cup that would be just for me, but I was so entrenched in taking care of our little family that I had lost touch with myself completely. I had no idea what would help me find my spark again. Then one day I got talked into a microneedling appointment with my sister to see if it could help my acne scarring. It helped my skin so much which in turn helped my confidence. A light turned on for me and I realized when I spent time on me and took care of myself that it changed my whole outlook on life. I realized that I mattered too, and I was worth the effort and time. This is how Glow Envy Med Spa was born. I knew that I wasn’t the only one that had lost herself.
