LIFESTYLE LETTER

It's February, Midlothian!

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Aaron Swart | aaron.swart@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Mary Ellin Arch | maryellin.arch@citylifestyle.com

February is here! As we head into more interesting weather and the celebration of love as we choose and experience it, I’m reminded this month of some traditions with which I grew up. My parents would always have candy boxes in the shapes of hearts for us on Valentine’s Day. We’d have a special meal that always included red and white-colored food items such as ham, mashed potatoes, and beets. Sometimes, we made cookies with yummy white and red frosting. Those were great memories for me as a child; I urge you to make space for traditions old and new, and never forget to make memories with those you love. The February Issue is all about the makers and entrepreneurs who grace our community with talent and products that inspire us to give more, do more, and be more for ourselves and for those we love. In the spirit of creativity, enjoy these wonderful features and see where you can become inspired to craft something, learn a new skill, and support your local makers! With much love,

Shamin Hotels Inc. is moving forward with a 250-room, upscale, full-service hotel and conference center at Chesterfield County's Stonebridge development. The Embassy Suites hotel and conference center is upsizing from original plans, adding amenities since it was originally announced in July 2019. The plan includes a 25,000-square-foot conference center, a 12,500-square-foot ballroom, a 10,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor terrace, and a resort-style swimming pool with outdoor bar. The original plan was for a 200-room hotel and a 10,000-square-foot conference center and did not include outdoor amenities. The Business of Innovation

Matt Bricker

Owner of Coastal Patio Furniture and Richmond City Firefighter

You’re a firefighter and a businessman. How do you marry the two? As a firefighter, we are trusted by strangers who have called upon us on what might be the worst day of their lives. The same loyalty is conferred on me by each of my customers. I strive to make an impact with our customer service. You refurbish old patio furniture. In our throwaway culture, that’s pretty unique. My aunt Deb had a furniture repair shop; she taught me the business. A few years ago, I saw a Dumpster loaded with ripped and broken chairs. I immediately had a passion to start Coastal Patio Furniture. Our mission will always be to customize furniture, extend its life, and prevent waste in landfills. How do you achieve work-life balance? I like to incorporate work into my life. My boys come to the shop while I’m working. I teach them about tools and they help me get parts. They already know how to install some!

Your business has a lot of moving parts. How do you manage? I delegate tasks that don’t play to my strengths but are essential for the business. I have an awesome team I hope to continue to grow. Talk about your transition from “regular” job to your business. I filed to become an LLC two weeks before the pandemic hit. I quickly pivoted from large-scale events to small boards, which were popular as we all celebrated milestones from home. Balancing both jobs was tough – I made boards in the morning, delivered during my lunch hour and after work, and bought supplies in the evening.

This helped me realize just how much I wanted this business to work. After a year of doing both, I left my full-time job last June. Share a recent “lesson learned.” I had someone purchase a board with a personalized card for delivery on a Sunday. It was my only board for that day, and I remember thinking I wished I could just enjoy the day. When writing the card I realized the customer’s family had lost their son the year before. The customer burst into tears when I delivered it. I realized that one board really can make a difference and my work that day truly mattered.

Dr. Kenneth Qiu Physician and founder of EuDoc

EuDoc is subscription-based. How does this help patients? Insurance works well when covering catastrophic events such as hospitalizations or rare diseases, but makes primary care unnecessarily complicated and expensive. Our practice model, direct primary care, improves access and level of care for patients. The practice model is growing nationally and we are the first in Chesterfield County. You strive to keep patients out of waiting rooms. How will you adapt as you grow? We spend more time during visits, allowing us to handle more issues per visit. We also use telemedicine generously, which can handle many issues without patients coming in. We aren’t incentivized to have people come in often, so our model allows us to keep our no-wait-time and same- or next-day promise as we grow. How do you innovate in your practice? Since we don’t chase insurance coding and reimbursement, our creative energy goes into making a better patient experience. For example, we have special negotiated lab and imaging rates for members, which often beats what they’d pay with their insurance. Hobbies? My favorite active hobbies are tennis and bouldering, and I have an extensive collection of board games.

For Introverts Spoiling your loved one doesn’t have to mean a flashy night out. Some of the most romantic moments can be found right at home. For the introverted couple, I love the idea of getting takeout from your favorite restaurant for a candlelit dinner at home. Add special touches like battery-operated twinkle lights and rose petals. Pick up dessert from Cameo Cakery & Cafe or make something sweet together. This idea can also apply to a romantic breakfast in bed or a picnic lunch in your back yard (temperatures permitting!). For Extroverts Let your partner shine like the star they are! Dance lessons could be the perfect date activity – ballroom, ribbon dancing, even pole dancing! Check out our Local Experiences for specific suggestions. Or, consider the Chocolate, Wine and Whiskey event at Main Street Station on Feb. 11 (see Events). I love these options because they’re not limited to the evening of the 14th. Gifts for the outgoing partner could also include new experiences: rock climbing, kickboxing or a cooking class (Wine and Dine Your Valentine. Feb, 14, 6:30 p.m., Publix Aprons Cooking School in Glen Allen, apronscookingschool.publix.com). Don’t be afraid to extend your celebration all week or even all month! For Romantics I am such a romantic myself!! Why not pull out all the romantic stops this year? For dinner, think about where you went on your first date or where you had a memorable moment in your relationship, and reprise that experience. Follow your romantic meal with an evening carriage ride from Hundleycarrages.com (see Local Experiences). End the evening with a special dessert or nightcap from your favorite bar or confectionery, such as Bartizan, The Jasper, Tarrant’s West or The Desserterie. A true romantic will always appreciate a handwritten valentine – be sure to allot time to compose your feelings – your Valentine is sure to save your card as a keepsake! The Family Affair If you count your kids among your Valentines, why not include them in your celebration? For a family night out, head to the Altria Theater on Feb. 13 for Bugs Bunny at the Symphony. For an at-home celebration, make Valentines for one other. Gather your materials: construction paper, felt, glitter, sequins, markers, felt paint, glitter glue, glue sticks, stickers and crazy scissors – let your creative juices flow! Spending quality time creating cards will bring everyone together and give each of you something to exchange on Valentine’s Day. Meghan Butcher is Midlothian Lifestyle’s stylist. Match your skills to the job description. use words and phrases listed as requirements for your desired position. 3. Focus on accomplishments, not responsibilities. Don’t outline daily duties; explain how your everyday efforts contributed to the company’s success. 4. Numbers attract the eye. A recruiter will subconsciously devote time to your résumé if there are numbers illustrating the value you’ve brought in your former positions. 5. Clichés don’t set anyone apart. Instead of “good communicator,” for example, substitute “communicated project requirements to 10 managers, resulting in completion of $15M project 1 month early.”

Job-hunting today is full of challenges. Many companies are firing and furloughing employees to compensate for business declines. Applicant pools are enormous as newly jobless applicants join those seeking promotions or new opportunities. Thanks to computer scanning, human eyes may never see your pristinely proofread résumé – or it may be discarded as unreadable. Ageism is real; some applications request driver’s license information to surreptitiously determine age. And COVID-19 has added another wrinkle as “WFH,” “RTO,” and “hybrid” make their mark on the hiring scene. The good news is that finding a job is still possible. Hiring typically picks up at the start of a new year; some companies are posting jobs now, and employers are open to flexible schedules more than they were pre-COVID. “Your next career move is too important to leave at the mercy of a scanner and outdated ideas about a résumé,” says Mark Misiano, the owner and Certified Professional Résumé Writer at RésuméReady. “You need the support of a professional to guarantee you stand out among an increasingly crowded and competitive hiring landscape.” RésuméReady’s concierge services include customized résumés and cover letters, LinkedIn profile enhancement, interview preparation, job search support, and career coaching. Mark’s clients are assured that their skills and experience stand out in a format that’s scannable, and he works with industry switchers and older job seekers to help them get noticed. Clients attest to the value of Mark’s services. “The first organization I sent this résumé to complimented me on its design,” one said. “I ultimately received three job offers using my résumé from RésuméReady!” Said another: “After working with Mark I received immediate traction on my job search, landing an offer within weeks.” Mark advises job-seekers to network virtually and leverage LinkedIn. “The vast majority of jobs aren’t listed on job boards,” Mark says, “so your best chance of landing a new position is by fostering relationships.” He also recommends making the most of furlough or workfrom-home time to invest in the search process, reaching out to recruiters and researching companies and roles. “You have to go above and beyond to outshine the competition,” Mark says. “Stand out in the crowd by creating an eye-catching résumé. Move your application to the top of the pile by connecting with hiring managers via email or phone. You can still ‘hit the pavement’ virtually instead of applying online and hoping for an interview.” Just as you might hire a personal trainer or a financial adviser, engaging an experienced career coach can give you an edge. “Hiring a Certified Professional Résumé Writer through RésuméReady can make the difference between a new job and months of struggle,” Mark says. ready4resume.com | (804) 930-6042

MAKING GUYS LOOK GOOD PERSONAL ATTENTION AND A FOCUS ON DETAILS ARE WHAT SET NOBLES & MISFITS APART FROM OTHER BARBER SHOPS

34

H AIR CA R E | LOCAL SERVI CE S

Inside The Hive, a sort of mall for beauty parlors, are a half-dozen or so women’s hair salons – and just one dedicated to men. It’s an ideal location for Brian Perez’s Nobles & Misfits barber shop. “The ladies send their guys to me,” says Brian, whose customers travel to 9002 W. Huguenot Road in Bon Air from all around Midlothian and as far away as Chester, Hanover County, Mineral and Louisa County. At Nobles & Misfits, personal attention is the degree of difference. Brian works by appointment only, delivering a custom hairand beard-trimming experience. This oneby-one approach has the benefit of allowing Brian to limit the number of people in his shop to just him and the customer, and to clean and sanitize between appointments, now a mandatory business practice in these days of COVID-19.

BRIAN PEREZ

The salon, whose name came out of a brainstorming session to devise a creative yet inclusive brand, does a steady business in haircuts and beard trims. Each appointment begins with a consultation that “sets the base for the appointment” and often requires diplomacy. A customer may request a style that will take several appointments to achieve, for example, and require an “interim” style or two while short hair grows out, Brian explains. “I have a lot of customers who have been buzzing their hair their whole lives,” he says. These customers must understand that any other cut will be longer and require more styling time and grooming products than they may be used to. “It’s all about interpretation and details,” Brian says. Chris Arquilla has been coming to Nobles & Misfits for nearly three years, driving first from Louisa County and now from Palmyra for haircuts and beard trims. “It was just a coincidence that I found Brian,” he says. “After that first visit, though, I knew I’d found my barber. Brian has amazing skills, truly a generational talent. He works very hard to include you, the customer, in the process to make sure you get the exact look you want. He’s very thorough and meticulous, and has a great eye for style.” A barber since age 15, when he cut friends’ and family members’ hair in his native Puerto Rico, Brian started training as an apprentice in his cousin’s barber shop at 18. Then he gained more experience at a succession of shops in Puerto Rico and later, in the U.S. He eventually went to barber school for certification, and relocated his business and his life to the U.S. after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017. “We were looking for new opportunities, and the hurricane was a deciding factor,” says Brian of the choice he and his wife, Damaris, made to leave Puerto Rico. “The country wasn’t in a good place then. And my brother was already here, so that made it easier.” Now, Brian’s one-chair shop is the place for men as Brian tames unruly locks, sculpts thick beards, and introduces guys to styling (“I use ‘messy’ a lot – it’s in, and it’s easy to do”) and styling products (he carries two from the Layrite line). “I love what I do and I love my customers,” Brian says. And customers love Brian. “He has a friendly and comforting personality,” Chris says. “I have never left his shop anything less than impressed and with the exact cut and style I’d envisioned. Never have I gotten as many compliments on my hair and beard since I began going to Brian. Great barber and great guy all around!” facebook.com/Nobles-Misfits FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/M I D LOT HI A N

Christina Miller CAFÉ OWNER & CUSTOM BAKER

For years Christina Miller has been known around RVA for her side business making custom cakes. Now, with her new brick-and-mortar Cameo Cakery & Café, she’s baking full-time, to her customers’ delight. “When I formulated my own recipes, I didn’t realize people were going to react as they did,” says Christina, once a full-time nurse, of the intense demand for her one-of-a-kind buttercream frosting and other confections. “I get so much satisfaction hearing how customers love my products.” In addition to sweets (homemade fudge!) there are charcuterie boards, pork rinds with pimento, and Christina’s Savory Cake, a personal-sized bundt that eats like a meal. And the cafe? Besides the usual grab-and-go fare, try coffee flights, tapped beer, wine, mimosas and more, all in a warm, social ambience with cozy indoor and outdoor seating options.
