AND GUESTS RECENTLY ENJOYED CHEF’S TABLE SEATING AT PERCH IN RICHMOND’S HISTORIC SCOTT’S ADDITION. Mike Ledesma, owner and executive chef, welcomed us warmly and pointed out various details throughout the Pacific-inspired restaurant that reflected aspects of his life and experiences, from exotic destinations including Hawaii and the Philippines to locales right here in Virginia. Our guests Kendra Bolton, community manager at Gather Midlothian, and Rachel Thibault, co-owner of Ashton Creek Vineyard, noted key details such as the height of the entrance door, which Mike said matched the length of the longboard he surfed on in Hawaii. Though every dish was an absolute hit, including the flavorful pork belly and an award-winning shrimp basket, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites. Mike, along with chefs Brandon, Chris, and others, put together a curated tasting menu alongside creative craft cocktails that exceeded our expectations! perchrva.com

PARTNERMD PHYSICIAN RECOMMENDS MEDITERRANEAN OR VEGAN DIET TO PREVENT AND TREAT CERTAIN HEALTH CONDITIONS

With meat as the issue, Americans really won’t like eating vegan – but that’s the diet best for cardiovascular health, Dr. Sherrard says. “A good study shows plaque in arteries went away with a vegan diet. It worked CONFUSED BY DIETS? JOIN THE CLUB.

vegan should get nutritional counseling, available at PartnerMD, as vegan must be done correctly to ensure health and benefits. So what’s a meat-lover to do? “You need a diet you can stick with,” Dr. Sherrard says. “Focus on making new habits.” Step 1 is eliminating sweet drinks. “We know that sugary drinks and

“All the major things that kill Americans can be helped by this diet.” OK, we’re on the edge of our seats. Drumroll…. The Mediterranean Diet. You’ve probably heard of it amid the diet din, but you don’t know much about it. Basically, it involves eating as natives of the Mediterranean do – a focus on plants (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds) with extra-virgin olive oil as the primary fat source. Dairy, eggs and poultry are consumed in moderation; red meat is eaten rarely. “It’s the plant foods that help a lot of conditions,” says Dr. Sherrard. “It’s high fiber, which prevents cancer and heart disease, and a lot of the fruits, like berries, have a lower glycemic index.” So why is the Mediterranean not at the top of the Diet Hit Parade? “There’s not a lot of meat on it, and we love our meat,” Dr. Sherrard says. “The more meat you eat, the greater your risk of heart disease.” The preferred animal protein on the Mediterranean is fish high in omega-3 – salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and tuna. The USDA says Americans’ fish consumption is well below the recommendation (at least two servings a week). By contrast, Americans consume more meat than USDA recommendations. Tommy Threewitts, owner/director of Midlothian’s and Glen Allen’s Tutoring Club franchises, says October is when he hears from parents about NTIs – not-turned-in assignments. That’s a problem addressed by the Student Success Program, a mix of supervised study halls, academic support, and individualized tutoring. As part of the program, Tutoring Club staff monitor the student’s school portal to hold the child accountable for assignments. “We take it out of the hands of the parents,” says Tommy. “It works very well.” As skills gaps are identified, students can be assigned a tutor and a tested curricula. “Every single one of our kids is on an individualized curriculum,” Tommy says.

A new Midlothian-area practice is making concierge levels of health care accessible and affordable to all. EuDoc, founded by Dr. Kenneth D. Qiu in partnership with Dr. Mariana L. Keener, offers subscription-based primary care. “We are able to make care affordable and accessible by not billing insurance and having a low monthly membership instead,” says Dr. Qiu. This differs from most “concierge” practices, which charge a monthly or annual fee in addition to billing insurance. CULINARY CREATIONS

Hot Salsa! AUTHENTIC MEXICAN SALSAS AND DIPS ARE HOMEGROWN RIGHT HERE IN MIDLOTHIAN

LOVE HOMEMADE SALSA? Head to the store, but not for ingredients – just get a jar of America DeLoach’s handcrafted Don Sebastian salsa. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, America has made salsa since 2017, using a recipe from her husband’s grandmother, who created it in Mexico in the 1900s. America launched Don Sebastian officially in 2017, from her kitchen, then established a commercial kitchen at 2940 Oak Lake Blvd, Midlothian. “The company and brand I’ve created allow me to provide top-quality, fresh salsas and dips to thousands of people in central Virginia,” says America. “I’m extremely passionate about what I do.” The product line includes a Mexican salsa in four different heat levels, a chunky pico de gallo, salsa verde, jalapeno dip, and chimichurri. The salsas and dips are all made in small batches of hand-selected fresh ingredients. All products have no added sugar, no artificial colors and no preservatives. They are dairy free and gluten free, non-GMO, and fit vegan, Whole30 and paleo diets. Also offered: Venezuelan black beans, pinto beans, sofrito, 3 Bean Caviar, corn salad, and chips. Products are sold at farmers markets (including online) such as Fall Lines and Seasonal Roots, and in select stores throughout Greater Richmond and Tidewater Virginia and in the Charlottesville and Washington, D.C., areas. In Richmond, you can find the products at Ellwood Thompson’s, Union Market, Libbie Market, University of Richmond, and the Magnolia Green Fare and Big Market RVA. salsasdonsebastian.com
