CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There is no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Midlothian, and those pet lovers want pictures of their four-legged friends displayed along with the rest of the family. We will introduce you to a local photographer who is passionate about making sure your pets are also captured in your family memories. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats so you can spoil your loyal companions.

THE CAMERON K. GALLAGHER FOUNDATION ARTICLE STEPHANIE HOWER

THE LIGHT OF RESILIENCE BURNS BRIGHTEST IN THE DARK. Born in the wake of tragedy, the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation serves as a beacon for those battling teenage depression and anxiety, generating awareness for a subject that is often overlooked. “The Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation was founded by its namesake, a 16-year-old girl who ran the 2014 Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach,” explains Clair Norman, director of vision and strategy for the CKG Foundation. “Cameron lost her life due to an undiagnosed heart condition in her parents’ arms just after she crossed the finish line. That day, March 16, 2014, the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation was born.” Clair, Cameron’s aunt, works closely with her sister, Grace Gallagher, executive director of the foundation, and a team of eleven. Cameron’s family and the CKG Foundation honor her memory and legacy by carrying out her vision of hope for those who suffer in silence. “Cameron struggled with anxiety and depression and knew the world should do a better job of speaking up about mental health issues,” continues Clair. “Since she found relief and acceptance through running, she designed the SpeakUp5k race, with a vision to bring communities together to celebrate the whole person and raise awareness, while providing education around the critical issue of mental health. Besides the SpeakUp5k race series, now in five states and growing, the CKG Foundation brings programs to schools

S’MORES TRIVIA + Victorian-era funeral cakes, specially prepared upon the death of a loved one, often included chocolate and marshmallow. + In the 1890s, marshmallow roasting became a fad in summer resort towns in the Northeast after a newspaper article called the roasts an excellent medium for flirtation since people could nibble off each others sticks. + In 1913, Mallomars (basically s’mores in cookie form) first appeared on shelves. + The first official recipe for a s’more came out in the 1927 Girl Scout guidebook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girls Scouts. ARTICLE STEPHANIE HOWER PHOTOGRAPHY AMBER KAY PHOTOGRAPHY

AMBER KRUG IS AN ANIMAL LOVER. She grew up with dogs, specifically boxers, who were part of the family. This passion for pets has flourished into a component of her art: photography. “I am a portrait and lifestyle photographer that offers pet, family, senior, couples, maternity and newborn sessions,” Amber says. “I can’t help but smile every time I see a dog. I love capturing special moments for people to share and reminisce on the memory.” For pet owners, animals are trusted companions and loyal friends; they bring joy, love and affection to their family. This is the reason Amber feels it is so important to capture them on camera. “I believe that photographs are very important because they capture a moment in time, freeze it and preserve it forever,” she says. “I delivered a printed canvas of a beloved pet that had passed away, and the family was deeply moved, but also very happy to have the image memorialized. Dogs leave paw prints on our hearts.” Her work includes more than just dogs. She has also photographed cats, horses and farm animals. While her favorite aspect of pet photography is

BARK IT UP If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables:

+ BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for four-legged friends at AKC.org.
