Through his own experiences, Shawn Abel was influenced to pursue a career in education. “Playing sports, participation in my high school’s 'Teachers for Tomorrow' program and multiple high school teachers influenced me to become a teacher,” he explains. “I began my professional career as a teacher with no intentions of doing anything other than teaching. multiple people encouraged me to pursue a career in administration after observing me lead teachers throughout the building in the areas of technology and instruction.” Shawn's dedication to the role and understanding of its importance gives him a focused outlook on his duty to the community. Shawn has been happily married to his high school sweetheart, Mandi, for 22 years, and they share one 16-year old son, Jackson, who attends Midlothian High School, which he admits isn’t the easiest thing at times but makes his role even more meaningful. “I approach my role as principal as the ultimate servant leader,” he says. “I want to do everything I can to put students in the best position to be successful, while consistently modeling what I would expect from the faculty, staff and students

PATRIOTISM EVOKES AN ARRAY OF FEELINGS AND IDEAS. For Mark Stone, a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Army, the sentiment is profound. “My personal experiences within the military have changed how I view patriotism from something symbolic to more emotionally visceral with a deeper connection to veterans,” he says. Some memorable points in his long career include serving as an infantry platoon leader during the Gulf War in 1990 and serving during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Although he was out of the country, Mark felt the pain of 9/11 acutely. “On 9/11, I was in Cairo, Egypt, climbing the Giza Pyramid to get my picture taken. Shortly afterward, I was notified about the attack and a friend that was killed in the Pentagon attack.” A life spent serving his country has inspired Mark to express his patriotism in a way that allows him to utilize his creative talents. “I’ve always had an interest in the visual arts from a young age and studied design during college,” he explains. “After retirement from the Army, I found time to pursue a creative output in woodworking … it was very therapeutic.” He handcrafts each wooden American flag from three types of wood which represent the stars, blue canton and stripes. “Curly maple, walnut and paduak, respectively, represent these symbols. No dyes or stains are used, and you only see the natural color of each species of wood under the high-gloss finish. “My hope is when a person glances at a wooden American flag that hangs on the walls of homes or offices, they momentarily pause and reflect the great sacrifices made from individuals from all walks of life within America and the continued unyielding pursuit to make this nation great for all people. … Making these wooden American flags is my totem.” Mark's patriotic art can be purchased by contacting him at woodstarsandstripes@gmail.com.

what it is There are many different types of fades, but ultimately a fade haircut is one that tapers in length the further down you go on the back and sides, meaning it isn’t trimmed to just one standard length all around. The level of fade (low, mid or high) depends on what point the shortest part of the hair begins to fade into a longer length. ASK FOR Taper fade, low fade, mid fade, high fade or skin fade
The man bun + what it is This popular style is good for many types of hair as long as you have a lot of it. You’ll need length in the front, back and sides generally long enough to at least brush your shoulders. KEEP IT CLEAN Be sure to keep your sideburns and neckline trimmed even as your hair grows out.

The quiff
+ what it is Closely related to the pompadour, the quiff haircut requires longer hair in the front and shorter hair in the back. The longer hair in the front is brushed upward and back from the forehead and away from the face. This look can be sleek and shiny for a classic look or texturized and matte for a modern take. ASK FOR Short sides and a long textured top. Be sure enough hair is left on top to brush back instead of standing straight up.
