many of which stemmed from poor diet and self-care. My goal with my "Doctor Flavor" moniker is to put an end to self-destructive lifestyles and learn to enjoy food again by inspiring others to cook dishes packed with flavor, loaded with vegetables and fresh ingredients that will help you through your day. Cooking itself is proven to be hugely therapeutic and incredibly stress-reducing. Cooking allows you to pick what exactly you are putting into your body. What you put into your body is what you get out, and by eating better, it just may prevent you from encountering me in the stroke ward. YOU FOCUS ON HEALTHY RECIPES. HOW DO YOU FLAVOR YOUR FOOD IN A WAY SO THAT HEALTHY MEANS DELICIOUS? I try to use ingredients found in the produce aisle to instill natural, unrefined flavor. Instead of using salt, I substitute it with an item that naturally has salt in it such as limes, carrots, or beets. Make a dish spicy instead of just adding extra oil; add an avocado or mushrooms to your dish to get a savory taste. I have found that after eating more diverse food I am better able to identify what a dish is missing. For the most flavor, I try to incorporate the four S's naturally: salt, savory, sweet, sour. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INGREDIENT YOU USE IN YOUR COOKING? This is hard to say; in general, each recipe I try to use a little of every taste. I think my favorite ingredient lately has been fresh lime juice. It really blends all the flavors together and provides this natural sour and salty taste. It's the perfect tie-in for meat and vegetable dishes. My favorite herb is definitely basil. WHAT IS ONE TIP FOR PEOPLE TO EAT HEALTHIER THAT IS EASY FOR THEM TO INCORPORATE INTO THEIR LIVES? Eat more vegetables! There are so many delicious ones out there and can be cooked and flavored in so many different ways. They will satisfy your

MASTER YOUR ATHLEISURE STYLE WITH HELP FROM THE STYLISTS AT TRUNK CLUB

14

Midlothian Lifestyle | January 2019

WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS TRENDS, KEEPING UP WITH THE EVER-CHANGING INFORMATION THAT’S OUT THERE CAN BE DIFFICULT. “This one move will change your legs forever;” “You’ll never eat these foods again after you read this story;” or, our favorite, “A glass of wine a day can help you live longer.” When you’re busy juggling the latest workout app craze or cleaning out your refrigerator only to find out a week later that those items are good for you again, it can get overwhelming. So, when you want a break from it all but don’t want to give up feeling sporty, take the trends from your yoga mat to your closet instead and stock up on athleisure wear. As the stylists at Trunk Club, a Nordstrom Company, put it, athleisure isn’t necessarily about working out—it’s designed for a lifestyle. Incorporating chic, comfy silhouettes with sporty pieces gets you through the day with a fashionable vibe you’ll want to sport—no pun intended—on the regular! For more style tips and to get your own trunk today, visit TrunkClub.com.

01

B A SI C U P G R A D E If a fuss-free outfit is what you’re looking for, keep it simple! The Trunk Club stylists recommend faux-leather leggings and a scoop-hem tank as an easy way to take the essentials up a notch. Finish off your look with a lightweight jacket, a baseball cap and a backpack with unique detailing for just the right amount of edge.

02

E A SE D U P If you’re looking to reflect your laid-back outlook but need to appear put-together, consider pairing a sporty logo tank with cropped wide-leg pants. Pro tip: Keep your outfit fresh with pieces in a cool, earth-tone color palette, and then bring it all together with trendy accessories with unique detailing.

03

BOLD COMFORT Your favorite athletic pieces, like sports bras, can be repurposed by wearing them under a sheer, oversized tunic. Be mindful of your proportions, though. Avoid frumpiness by pairing it with fitted joggers, and complete the look with a stand-out bag and sneakers.

Four Fun Hobbies to Consider in the New Year DANCES WITH WOOL Dances with Wool is a yarn boutique in Midlothian that specializes in quality yarns and supplies for knitters and crocheters. They are a part retail and a part gathering spot where the fiber arts community can relax and stitch with others. You won’t see too many of your grandmother’s hand knits in this store. Today’s knit and crochet designers have modernized the look of handmade garments with fashionable design. Dances with Wool offers beginner and advanced classes as well as workshops. Classes are always listed on their website and can be purchased online or in the shop. They also offer private lessons where you can learn the skill of your choice with an experienced teacher. Dances with Wool instructors bring a wealth of experience and talent to their classes. Whether you are learning in a group or prefer one-on-one attention, you’ll receive superb instruction. Special events also take place in the shop on a regular basis.

WHY KNITTING? Research has shown positive health benefits from knitting and crocheting. Both crafts are a great way to lower blood pressure and stress hormones as well as help with anxiety and depression. The repetitive motion induces a relaxed state, and its results have been compared to those found in meditation or yoga. A study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences found that those engaged in crafts like knitting and crocheting lessened their chances of developing mild cognitive impairment or memory loss. It has even helped patients with Parkinson's disease improve or maintain fine motor skills.

24

Midlothian Lifestyle | January 2019

ABOUT DEBBIE Knitting has been Debbie’s passion for nearly 20 years when she learned to stitch at the age of 10. The needles were put away as she entered her teenage years, and they remained packed away for many years as she raised her family, taught middle school and was a librarian for 31 years. She picked up the needles again on vacation after visiting a yarn store with a friend, and she hasn’t stopped since. When her children became adults and left home, she went through a divorce. It was then that she decided to retire from education. She moved to Midlothian where she opened the store in her new community and began "Chapter 2." “It is my sincere hope that Dances is a place where you find great yarn and more importantly experience a welcoming gathering spot where you just want to sit and share companionship and a cup of coffee with others who love the craft,” she says. ABOUT REBECCA AR Workshop Richmond is owned by Midlothian resident Rebecca Keeling Gagnon with loving support (and lots of wood cutting) behind the scenes from her handy husband, Gregg Martin, and their son, Kade. Being the owner of a DIY workshop seemed like a natural fit for Rebecca, as she is the daughter of a teacher and a wooden boat builder. Rebecca grew up in a tiny, tight-knit waterfront community in Suffolk where she spent long childhood days playing amidst the sawdust and antique tools in her dad’s shop. It was there that her love for all things weathered, vintage and storied was born. AR Workshop Richmond is convenient to the surrounding areas of Short Pump, Glen Allen, Mechanicsville, Midlothian and Chesterfield. Located in the beautiful (and pet-friendly!) Stony Point Fashion Park, there’s plenty of parking, delicious restaurants and on-trend shops. Located near CineBistro, next to Dillards. FOOD & WINE

The Benefits of Honey WORDS SIDNEY LEO

Honey has been around for thousands of years and has been used in almost every culture around the world. Many people use it to sweeten food and beverages, but did you know honey is one of the top superfoods used to treat countless health conditions and boost overall health? Honey contains 18 amino acids, and it has antioxidant and antibacterial properties that help fend off harmful pathogens. It can also be used to treat a wide-range of aliments such as healing wounds and burns, athlete’s foot, sore throats and even a hangover. Local honey taken for two months before allergy season can actually lessen allergies by helping your body grow accustomed to the pollen and immunizing your body against them.

Honey is great for your skin Did you know that raw organic honey is great for your skin too? Honey has natural antibacterial properties, so it is an effective acne treatment option, and it is loaded with antioxidants and enzymes, so it helps boost your skin’s immunity and fights free radicals to help slow down aging. Honey is also very moisturizing and helps eliminate dead skin cells. Try a honey mask with yogurt or fresh aloe for additional skin benefits. 34
