Welcome to the Style Issue of Middleton City Lifestyle. This month, we’re celebrating style in all forms, whether it’s what we wear, how we design our homes, how we come together as a community, or even what we eat! Style means different things to different people. For me, it starts with clothing, although calling my wardrobe “stylish” might be a stretch. Thankfully, our partner and Middleton native Ben Miller, owner of Kwik Drip, is a local thrifting expert. Kwik Drip is a vintage clothing brand that Ben started in his college dorm, which is now part of a growing movement toward sustainable fashion. We caught up with Ben, and he shared a local thrift guide with the inside scoop on some of his favorite spots around Madison and Middleton. If you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe with something unique, you’ll want to bookmark this one! Brainstorming this issue reminded me that our homes, both inside and out, are just as much a reflection of our personal style. So, we head outdoors with Carrington Lawn & Landscape to explore how exterior spaces can reflect the same style and comfort found inside your home. They specialize in creating outdoor living areas that feel natural, welcoming, and built to last. Every design is tailored to the homeowner’s lifestyle, with attention to layout, materials, and features that elevate all the senses. We also sat down with local interior designer Melissa Dale of Olivine Designs and Home Solutions. With summer transitioning to fall, Melissa shares simple ways to adjust the style of your home to match the changing season. Her mood boards give us ideas to make seasonal styling feel both intentional and attainable, through practical swaps like cozy throw pillows, curated coffee table books, and front porch refreshes. Lastly, we spotlight Rotary Works – Today!, a community-wide event taking place on September 27. The day is packed with engaging programs focused on service, learning, and connection. I’ve been so impressed with the people and good works I’ve learned about through my membership in the the Middleton/Madison West Rotary Club, we couldn’t wait to share this with our readers. It’s an example of what community looks like in action. Here’s to a stylish month ahead! COLE SPITLER, PUBLISHER @MIDDLETONCITYLIFESTYLE

Those of us who live in four-season climates know the innate urge that arises come spring thaw: the desire to embrace outdoor living. Our exterior spaces become an extension of our home, and through intentional design, can reflect and complement our individualized lifestyles. For nearly three decades, Carrington Lawn & Landscape has been mastering this art, transforming Madison-area yards into stunning, functional extensions of their clients’ lives. Sean Carrington, a lifelong Madisonian, started the company in 1998 as a way to help fund his education while a student at UW-Madison. Whether he took to the field or the field took him, he found himself ready to dig deep and forge his own foundation for growth. A pivotal independent study class with a UW business professor helped Sean craft his first business plan, set an ambitious goal to own 20 trucks, and lay the groundwork for continuous, achievable success. With a “strategic mindset, our evolution has been carefully crafted in controlled growth, concentrated on empowering our people,” CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . expressed Sean, whose early grit and open mindset led to the steady expansion from a primarily lawn care service to the full-service construction side of landscape design. Carrington has surpassed the initial goal set in 2002 and now operates 40 trucks. His distinctive leadership style, centered on valuing efficiency, commitment to retaining relationships, high-level service, and genuine community care through Carrington Cares, has allowed Carrington Lawn & Landscape to elevate the very definition of professionalism in the industry. Sean recognized that as outdoor spaces became a deeper reflection of personal style, clients would desire a thoughtfully meticulous experience, a demand his company was built to meet. Senior Landscape Designer Bob Wambach highlights the company’s deeply personalized approach they use for their exterior design process, which begins with a series of questions to ensure every space is a bespoke

reflection of the homeowner. Understanding the client’s stage of life, interior style, lifestyle needs, and family dynamics provides insight to tailor a plan for budget, layout, maintenance level, and material selection. When it comes to visual aesthetics, the Carrington design team aims to create a seamless integration between interior and exterior spaces. They delve into the home’s existing style, and rather than merely matching, they seek out “echoes” from within the house that they can extend to the outside in meaningful ways. “We might take an interior trim color... and use that as one of the interior bands around the outside of the patio,” Bob shares. Subtle visual cues, such as using different textures of the same color paver – a smooth finish in a kitchen area for practicality, transitioning to a textured finish, work to create sophisticated connections without too much continuity. Using techniques like “quilting” and “art lines” defines spaces and adds visual interest. Whether it’s a strategically placed columnar tree to fill an architectural gap, a flowy shrub to create sound through movement, a water feature to enhance sound, or lighting to add depth and play with shadows, a good design subconsciously enhances all of the senses. Their extensive knowledge ensures that every detail is a worthwhile long-term investment, balanced in both practicality and style.

“The minor details, often echoed from the interior to the exterior, are what make you love the overall feel of something, without really understanding why.” S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ M I D D L E TO N

local vintage A Madison area vintage guide from Ben Miller, Kwik Drip ARTICLE BY MIDDLETON CITY LIFESTYLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JILL HEILMAN Ben Miller started Kwik Drip out of his college dorm in 2018. He thrifted clothes he loved, sold extras to friends, and saw a business model naturally take shape. Through Kwik Drip, Ben has built a loyal following and helps others find value in upcycled clothing. He put together a short list of curated thrift shops in the area worth checking out.

Vintage on State 132 State St, Madison, WI “Vintage on State feels like a local staple. It’s cozy, familiar, and super welcoming. It’s the go-to for vintage Badger gear to stand out on game day. I’ll bring pieces to sell, and often find something for myself. It’s got something for everyone, like a Badger farmer’s market.”

Kool Things 1310 Williamson St, Madison, WI “Kool Things is practically in my backyard. I buy and sell vintage clothes with them, and always come across rare, affordable finds. Sometimes I grab gifts there. The energy is unbeatable, and everyone who works there is cool and down to chat. It’s a place you walk into and instantly feel at home.”

22

G E A R GU ID E | S HO P P I NG

Ben’s mission is simple: make recycled clothing cool and accessible. Readers can purchase curated goods from his website, kwikdrip.shop, or reach out directly to sell their cherished clothing. Ben buys everything from Badger gear and band tees to sportswear and denim. One local resident recently reached out after seeing him in Middleton City Lifestyle, and Ben ended up buying their Rose Bowl crewnecks and Moon Man band tees at a fair price. Another sold him their prized Grateful Dead collection.

While fast fashion can offer convenience, trendiness, and affordability, many shoppers are turning to upcycled brands like Kwik Drip. “I want people to see that you don’t have to sacrifice style to be sustainable,” Ben says. “There’s so much great clothing already out there, it just needs fresh eyes and a second life.” Looking ahead, Ben is focused on growing Kwik Drip’s brand while continuing to develop local connections. “It’s cool seeing how clothing can bring people together. I love being able to make it easy and fun to be part of something sustainable.”

Vintage Threads 2160 Atwood Ave, Madison, WI “Opened just this June, Vintage Threads is new to Atwood. It fits the neighborhood perfectly, with a classic 90s vibe that offers a deep, unique selection. It’s laid-back but full of character. I buy and sell there often, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite local spots.”

University Coin and Jewelry 6801 University Ave, Suite 130, Middleton, WI “University Coin is where I offload gold and silver: rings, coins, and more. Their friendly staff makes the process easy with trustworthy and fair transactions. It has an oldschool feel, and you never know what you’ll find. I’ve seen rare coins, estate jewelry, watches, even sneakers.”

Seasonal Transitions for Your Home Embrace change with effortless design ideas to transition your home with the seasons.

With the ability to evoke a desired feeling solely by the way a room is assembled, intentionality is at the core of interior design. To achieve a cohesive atmosphere, designers often use mood boards. These visual collages, curated with images of textures, objects, and color palettes, help define the aesthetic and emotional tone of a room. Local interior designer Melissa Dale offered insights on how to transition your home’s ambiance with the changing seasons. These summer and fall images show that even the smallest thoughtful changes can set the right intentions for the upcoming season.

24

D E C OR T R E N D S | HO M E + D E SIGN

Fall is at our doorstep; it’s time to welcome that cozy, comforting mood inside your home. While summer embraced light fabrics, bright colors, and airy spaces, shifting your decor for autumn doesn’t require a full makeover. You can easily generate a shift using things you already own. Start by swapping out summer textiles. Replace lightweight throws and pillows with rich, textured fabrics, like wool, flannel, or velvet. Choose warm shades such as burnt orange, deep burgundy, and forest green. Layering adds both comfort and visual interest.

Next, embrace fall-inspired scents like cinnamon, clove, apple, and, of course, pumpkin spice, to instantly create a cozy ambiance. Bring the outside in with natural elements. Decorate with small pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, and branches. A simple bowl of seasonal fruit or a vase filled with dried wheat stalks makes for an effortless centerpiece. Finally, consider adding a few fall-themed accents. Wreaths, autumnal art prints, or a plaid table runner can enhance the seasonal feel without overwhelming your space. These simple updates make it easy to enjoy the shift from summer sun to autumn comfort, one cozy corner at a time.

Olivine Designs & Home Solutions Melissa Dale, owner of Olivine Designs & Home Solutions, combines interior design and real estate expertise to curate homes that feel personal and functional. A Middleton native with degrees in Business and Interior Design, she focuses on capturing each client’s unique style, from thoughtful remodels to finishing touches, ensuring every project reflects their personality. 608-658-2529 melissa.dale03@gmail.com

An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

FROM VISION TO ACTION ARTICLE BY MIDDLETON CITY LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JKALPHOTOGRAPHY, ED FINK When the Rotary Club of Madison West Middleton asked itself, “Where do we want to be in five years?” a clear plan of priorities and strategies emerged. One of their priorities was to be visible, to show up in meaningful ways, to serve and support the needs of the local community. From that goal, Rotary Works – Today! began to take root and grow into a tangible outreach event. In a time when challenges seem overwhelming, this event offers a refreshing and hopeful alternative. Rotary Works – Today! presents a full day of

engaging programs, volunteer opportunities, and community-building activities designed to enrich lives. It brings Rotary’s mission to life with a shared commitment to Unite for Good. On September 27, dozens of local organizations and businesses will come together for an entire day of meaningful impact. Events will take place at several locations, including the Middleton Public Library, Terrace Avenue Pavilions (TAP), Stone Horse Green, Lussier Community Education Center, and the Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness.

Rotary Club of Madison West Middleton brings its vision to life through a full day of community programs, volunteer opportunities, and neighborly connection.

Programming includes storytimes with guest readers, educational sessions on pollination, bees and butterflies, energy initiatives and sustainability practices. There will be free blood pressure screenings, food and diaper drives, resume-building workshops, and neighborhood discussions on community resilience. Peace Poles and live music will create an uplifting atmosphere for neighborly connection. In support of Rotary’s global mission to eradicate polio, participating bars and restaurants donate a portion of drink proceeds to the End Polio Now Campaign, an effort that remains a top priority globally. It provides the opportunity to use our shared spaces to strengthen our community, develop relationships with our neighbors, and move closer to the enriched and connected community we all desire.
