Explore

Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to explore all things local. This issue is your guide to discovering some of the best that Middleton and the surrounding area have to offer, both well-known and hidden gems!

Our first story is about Harvest Hill Golf Course - a place I’d consider a hidden gem. I stumbled upon it last summer when my friend and our wives were looking for a place to hit some balls around. Harvest Hill is a 9-hole layout, developed by Sil Maly, that started as a creative fix for an undevelopable piece of land. More than 30 years later, it’s still going strong with help from his family, and it remains one of the most affordable and welcoming places around to hit a ball, trade stories, and enjoy a good walk.

In the article “Where Lifestyle Meets Design,” we look at four local communities, each offering a different take on living and lifestyle. Bishops Bay continues to grow with flexible building options, outdoor amenities, and golf course views. Evans Crossing was designed to preserve mature trees and blend into the natural landscape, creating a quiet and intentional neighborhood. Glacier’s Trail appeals to those who want country-style living with easy access to trails and schools, and Belle Farm is bringing a wellness-focused approach to housing with eco-friendly design, shared amenities, and space to connect.

In “Middleton’s Italian Scene”, we interviewed three Italian restaurants in Middleton, each with a unique story. From the family legacy behind Gino’s Italian Deli to the European café-inspired Villa Dolce and the reliable comfort of Biaggi’s, you’ll get a preview of what makes each restaurant special. Plus, each interviewee provides the dish every guest should try!

Finally, we highlight some of our parks that are worth a visit. From Lakeview Park and its splash pad to the trails of Cherokee Marsh and Pope Farm Conservancy, these spots offer ample room to roam, relax, or escape and reset. Some are big, some are tucked away, but all of them remind us how lucky we are to live in a place with so much green space nearby!

We hope this issue inspires you to get outside, investigate a new location, or examine a familiar place with fresh eyes! COLE SPITLER, PUBLISHER

Golf Beyond Country Clubs –Sil

Maly’s

Mission to Make the Game Accessible

Ranked 9th for most golf courses per state, Wisconsinites know how to maximize their summers, finding it socially acceptable to take a partial day from work to slide in a round of golf. As a sport, however, it is tough to break into with course fees, brisk fairway etiquette, and a specialized skill earned only through repetition and dedication, which can be difficult for young children, families, and the like. Sil Maly recognized this gap and followed his life happenings into a creative adventure for the benefit of the community, and up grew Harvest Hill Golf Course.  Sil, now in his 90s, was a prominent developer in town during his prime. When a local farmer presented Sil with an opportunity to purchase a parcel of his land, Sil, a fast-paced decision maker with an outstanding batting average, took no time to decide that this was something he wanted to do. When he asked his parents, farm owners in the area, for a loan, he was met with lines of doubt from his father. His mother gave her classic line of “give me three days to work on him and you’ll have it.” So, three days later, Sil acquired 56 acres of land in what was once the middle of nowhere, 1968.

After surveying the land, his keen eye noted that a portion, 14.5 acres to be exact, sat low to the water table, making it unsuitable for developing residential houses. After building his home on the hill overlooking the lowland, Sil began plotting what he could do. A friend of his was an avid golfer, which sparked the idea to try seeding the land. The seed took well, and so began the initial stages of creating a golf course from the ground up in 1992. After visually constructing the direction of the holes, Sil began to plant trees, trees that now stand multiple stories tall!

This course is not short of entertainment! Sil has become a collector of ancient goods, of which you will come across as you meander around the course. Whether the quirky stories plaqued to the objects came before or after Sil obtained them, all we know is that big fish stories are told here, despite there being no fish in the pond.

With a suggested fee of $3 per person to play this 9-hole course, inflation is definitely not the one yelling “fore!” Sticking to his heart, Sil maintains this as a course truly accessible for all. He encourages visitors, whether new to the sport or not, to use this space as a place of connection, with the ability to learn and socialize at their own pace. To enjoy the mere fact of spending time with others while staying active outside.

His hope is for this course to swing past the test of time in a growing city. Lucky for us, a promising future may be aligned, as numerous family members now partake in the dutiful upkeep, finding joy in the unlikely hobby spearheaded by their father and grandfather. For over 30 years, respect and care have been put in, and that’s all he expects from visitors.

If you see an old man with a big ‘ole grin riding around on a John Deere, wave him down for a chat. One of his favorite aspects of the course is the people he talks to, however, he claims, “I have a little problem with the social, because sometimes people also want to talk.”

Where Lifestyle Meets Design

ARTICLE BY MIDDLETON CITY LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY

BISHOPS BAY Middleton, WI

Set on 780 acres overlooking Lake Mendota, The Community of Bishops Bay, developed by T. Wall Enterprises, is a master-planned neighborhood that blends natural beauty, diverse architecture, and outdoor living. The 780-acre community includes seven distinct neighborhoods (five currently open: The Back Nine, The Farm, The Prairie, The Woods, and Prairie Estates), secure gated areas, and a future Town Center designed for walkability and convenience.

One of Bishops Bay’s standout features is flexibility. Unlike many new developments, residents can choose their own architect and builder, allowing for one-ofa-kind homes that reflect their personal style. While community standards ensure quality and cohesion, the design diversity creates an eclectic and vibrant streetscape. More than 35 experienced builders have already contributed to the unique architectural landscape.

This community supports a golf-centric and outdoors lifestyle, with nearby access to more than 2,000 acres of open space and parks. Amenities include a private clubhouse with a pool and hot tub, extensive pedestrian and bike trails, a children’s playground, sledding hill, ice skating rink, picnic areas, and breathtaking views of Lake Mendota and the State Capitol.

Now in its 7th phase of development, the current sales focus is their Prairie Estates Neighborhood, where spacious lots back up to the Bishops Bay Country Club Golf Course, Holy Wisdom Monastery, or the North Mendota Wildlife Area.  A limited number of lots remain in the available neighborhoods, but Bishops Bay continues to expand, with Phase 8 in the planning stage.

With its mix of natural surroundings, thoughtful planning, and architectural freedom, The Community of Bishops Bay offers a truly special living experience. Whether you’re looking to build your dream home or find a move-in-ready space, this neighborhood invites you to explore, connect, and live your own way.

EVANS CROSSING,  Middleton, WI

Evans Crossing, a niche neighborhood developed by Jason Thomas Homes LLC, was designed with intention from the ground up. Located in Middleton, this serene community is defined by its mature trees, cohesive home styles, and an emphasis on preserving the existing natural beauty.

From the start, developer Jason T. Kratochwill prioritized the landscape. Rather than expand yard sizes, he focused on saving the neighborhood’s most striking features, including a massive ancient oak tree, maples and pines, and key tree lines that now give Evans Crossing its peaceful, established look. Even the Town trail was thoughtfully relocated to protect mature trees.

The homes follow an aesthetic that sets the neighborhood apart. Exterior colors are drawn from indigenous tones like tans, bronzes, blacks, and natural masonry hues, while traditional white trim and bright accents are intentionally absent. This consistent palette allows the surrounding landscape and homes to blend together seamlessly. A meadow of native wildflowers is required in every front lawn, an element that ensures the natural habitat and visual character of the neighborhood flows smoothly from one property to the next.

In addition to its visual appeal, Evans Crossing offers convenience for homeowners who prefer low-maintenance living. The HOA provides full lawn care and snow removal, proven to be one of the community’s most popular features.

Kratochwill credits Aaron Olson of Olson-Toon Landscaping as an essential collaborator in bringing the neighborhood’s vision to life. From early planning to ongoing site work and maintenance, Olson’s partnership has helped shape the entire development.

Only a few lots remain, with more than half of the homes already built. A speculative home is planned for completion in early 2026, and Evans Crossing will be featured in the Madison Area Parade of Homes later that summer.

GLACIER’S TRAIL

Middleton, WI

Tucked into the rolling countryside just outside of Madison, Glacier’s Trail offers residents an opportunity to enjoy peaceful, country-style living with convenient access to the best of the greater Madison area. The community blends natural beauty, walkability, and a strong connection to the outdoors, making it ideal for families and those with active lifestyles.

What sets Glacier’s Trail apart is its scenic topography, including wooded lots, open vistas, and the Ice Age Trail that runs directly through the development. Whether walking the neighborhood trails or exploring the larger trail system, you’re surrounded by stunning natural views and quiet, winding streets that make daily life feel like a private escape. In addition to immediate trail access, Glacier’s Trail is situated near miles of pedestrian and bike paths, connecting residents to nearby parks, recreation spaces, and beyond.

Glacier’s Trail is just minutes from Madison’s West Side, close to top-rated golf courses, popular restaurants, and local shopping. Families especially appreciate the proximity to the highly regarded Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, ensuring a quality education and an easy commute.

The development includes a range of homesites with varying lot sizes and views, offering flexibility for buyers who want a home that reflects their personal taste. For those interested in exploring the neighborhood further, the Highland model by Victory Homes of Wisconsin is available to tour. This 4,300+ sq. ft. home features a first-floor primary suite, office, four-season room, and an expansive lower level complete with a wet bar, wine room, media space, and fifth bedroom.

With just a few homesites remaining, Glacier’s Trail continues to be one of Middleton’s most sought-after neighborhoods. It offers a rare opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds: peaceful rural surroundings with easy access to city conveniences.

BELLE FARM Middleton, WI

Belle Farm is a visionary residential community in Middleton, Wisconsin, focused on physical and mental well-being and a deep respect for the earth. With views overlooking Graber Pond and the conscious effort to preserve 50% of open space, the design allows residents to connect with nature and neighbors, to live and thrive, and to feel delight around every corner.

Thoughtful land use, including compact development and a walkable layout, creates ample opportunities for time outside, physical activity, and a sense of peace. Belle Farm will include varied housing types, health and wellness amenities, neighborhood-focused businesses, and compelling architecture. Homes will include solar, geothermal heating and cooling, EV-ready wiring, and high-performance construction methods to help them tread lighter and become more self-sufficient and resilient.

Belle Farm was intentionally designed with opportunities to own and rent at all stages and phases of life. Residents will have easy access to prioritize an active lifestyle, spend time outside, and connect with neighbors at Belle Farm. Their health and wellness building, The Rose, will encompass an array of amenities, including a gym, yoga studio, fitness studio, outdoor lap pool, saunas, courtyard, lounge, co-working space, and more.

Brio Design Homes is the primary residential builder at Belle Farm. Brio does an exceptional job of guiding clients through every stage of the building process. Buyers can also bring their own builder. Contact Estella at 608-692-9717 for more information.

Belle Farm is currently scheduling neighborhood tours and would love to show you around. Visit their website, www. bellefarm.live, to schedule yours!

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JILL

Charles Gargano Owner

For Charles Gargano, the owner of Gino’s Italian Deli in Middleton, the restaurant business is a family heirloom. His father, Gino, opened the original Gino’s on State Street in 1963, and with two uncles also running restaurants, Charles was immersed in the world of food from a young age, picking up on business operations with ease. After college, he returned with a drive to explore various business endeavors. Embracing his love for Sicilian food, his focus included opening a Gino’s location of his own.

After a devastating fire at one of their restaurants, the family reevaluated their future role in the city. The Deli concept came from his mother, having recognized the need for quick, wholesome meals. Charles and his brother agreed, pushing the transition of Gino’s into a grab-and-go location while prioritizing healthy, quality options.

What sets Gino’s apart is that it doesn’t feel like a chain. Grounded by family recipes full of flavor, their meals are intended to fuel your body with lean, nutritious ingredients.

For a lunch that satisfies your cravings, try a sandwich filled with house-made meatballs. Or for a taste of a well-known city legend, pick up their lasagna to bake for dinner.

Faton + Luda Lumani & Jerry + Zamira Lumani

Co-Owners

Brothers Faton and Jerry, along with their wives Luda and Zamira, remembered growing up in Europe with cafes that served fresh food surrounded by a culture where people prioritized time spent unwinding with each other. Middleton didn’t have that, so they sought to bring that lifestyle to their new home the best way they knew how. As experienced restaurant owners, they led with their idea to serve house-made gelato and authentic thin-crust pizza, knowing the community would help shape their next steps.

Now, nearly two decades later, Villa Dolce remains a cornerstone of downtown Middleton. Whether it’s the expanded and seasonally changing menu or the unparalleled sensation of fresh gelato, first-time visitors seem to make a habit of becoming return guests.

If you’ve been, you know the Lumani family, as they remain the core of daily operations. Along with their employees, they enjoy the consistency of maintaining quality and the joy of the connections they develop with their guests over the years.

For a staff favorite, try the beef bolognese. If you visit, stay for more than a satisfying meal; plan time to embrace and absorb the experience of those around you.

Brent Williams  |  Nate Olson

Head Chef  |  General Manager

As two of the longest-standing employees at Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, Brent and Nate have become the heart of our Middleton branch. Brent began his culinary career at Biaggi’s, absorbing insight from every role he worked. As a scratch kitchen, almost everything is made in-house from scratch daily, with his back-ofhouse expertise ensuring a streamlined process. Nate, with deep experience in the high-end service industry, brought his knowledge of front-of-house execution to create a welcoming, trusted environment, leading to a sense of community that keeps people coming back.

Their extensive menu draws inspiration from multiple Italian regions with a Midwestern touch. Generous portions and a wide variety of crowd-pleasing comfort dishes leave guests feeling full and satisfied, as you would with a home-cooked meal from grandma.

The warm and spacious atmosphere sets them apart as a “guaranteed source of good food you can feel confident bringing a large group to.” For gatherings, their family-style service option allows guests to focus on each other while enjoying a shared table of favorite dishes.

Their staff-favorite specialty dish? The Chicken Pietro. It’s unique to the restaurant and, reportedly, unforgettable.
