Welcome to Mesa City Lifestyle!
Growing up, I was captivated by stories. My nightly routine revolved around my mom reading tales like The Paper Bag Princess, Love You Forever, and The Poky Little Puppy. I could listen to the same story night after night, and it still filled me with joy. That’s the magic of stories: they inspire, intrigue, and ignite curiosity.
When the chance arose to share the stories of the people, businesses, and events in our community, I was beyond excited! It felt like the perfect opportunity for my husband, Adam, and I to come together, blending our talents to connect more deeply with our community.
Our journey began right here in Mesa. I was living in the area while Adam was visiting on a golf trip from Canada. That chance meeting—well, that’s a story for another time!
Adam, a second-generation realtor, has been in the business since he was 18. He has a remarkable gift for connecting with people, understanding their needs, and building lasting relationships. I’ve spent 15 years in corporate marketing, and while I’m grateful for the organizations I've worked with, I’ve longed to give back to the community that has been so kind to my family—something more personal, like this.
I used to tease my dad about the "tacky" poster he framed in our house: “21 Suggestions for Success” by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. One suggestion that still resonates is #2: “Work at something you love that’s worthy of your time and talent.” Who knew that piece of wall art would pack such a punch 20-something years later? Reflecting on this has inspired me to launch a new publication for Mesa, and it’s truly an honor!
In our digital world, there’s something special about holding a publication in your hands. The experience of reading words and seeing images on paper evokes nostalgia and connection, much like the books from my childhood and that poster in our home. Print has a lasting power that brings stories to life in a way that resonates deeply.
Adam and I are committed to producing something meaningful for our community—something we hope you’ll look forward to opening, find joy in reading, and experience happiness in exploring. We are dedicated to sharing uplifting news and highlighting the incredible stories of the people right here in Mesa.
Welcome to Mesa City Lifestyle! We’re excited for the road ahead, and we thank you for joining us!

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
THREE BEST FRIENDS ON A MISSION TO ENRICH LIVES
ARTICLE BY ASHLEIGH UNDERWOOD
Founded in 2020 by best friend trio, Tim, Jesse, and Ian, Papago Vans has gained a lot of attention in Mesa, which has become known for being an RV Mecca. Whether you are fully embracing van life or you’re more of a weekend warrior looking for adventure, Papago will help create the home base for your adventure. Challenging the idea that if you don’t want to camp in tents you need an RV, Papago is creating customized vans designed to get you outdoors and
exploring nature. These vans have the basic necessities and then some, creating a beautiful getaway vehicle for any adventure.
If you’re not a seasoned overlander, the process of getting a custom adventure van might seem overwhelming. Don’t worry though, Papago Vans has a self-proclaimed fun and easy process to get you from start to finish. Their perfect rating on Google shows that they are speaking truth with their claims.
Papago Vans is veteran owned— Tim and Ian have both served the United States Army. One might think that is how this friend group got started. However, it would be Jesse that connects all of them together. Ian and Jesse are childhood best friends who grew up in Prescott. Jesse, still living in Tempe after graduating from ASU, became friends with Tim once he moved back to Tempe (who was born in Mesa and raised in the area) after his time in service.
Papago Vans will help create the home base for your adventure.
PAPAGO VANS WILL HELP CREATE THE HOME BASE FOR YOUR ADVENTURE.
Once Ian and Tim were introduced, they all became inseparable.
This trio, all of them having an entrepreneurial spirit, have started multiple businesses, including an iPhone repair business and an endeavor with coffee, before launching Papago Vans from Jesse’s garage in Tempe. “We fail forward,” Tim says when discussing the previous endeavors. Each business, while most would see them as a failure, taught the trio more
about running a business. That experience is playing out in their success today.
Their humble beginnings started with an idea that they could create custom vans. That idea grew to acquiring a van and remodeling it. Prior to this, the guys were doing modifications and small customizations on trailers as a group hobby, just for fun. Even customizing the van was something they did on the side. They finished the van and sold it, thanks to an ad
on Craigslist. Despite selling the van, they were still getting calls from people interested in their idea. The pandemic, which led to job loss for Ian and Jesse, caused the guys to go all in on Papago.
Part of Papago Van’s mission is to “embrace the richness of existence” which you see in every aspect of the business. Outside of being owned and led by best friends, you see the camaraderie and friendship among the employees when

you tour the facility. It isn’t just within the walls of their building though. They are enriching the existence of the Mesa community through outreach when they hear of needs. They donate a portion of their profits as well. Their expansion that led them to Mesa has allowed them to continue to create more jobs. This is one of the coolest things Papago does in Jesse’s eyes. Outside of working with his best friends, he enjoys
knowing that they are bettering their community by creating opportunities for people “who are smarter than us” to come alongside them and work at Papago. Their work isn’t done either, as they continue to grow, they are already looking at opening up more positions. With potential facility expansion on the horizon, they are looking at staying in Mesa to continue enriching the community they love deeply.

DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS—SIMPLIFIED
The end of the year is here! With the end of the year comes the onslaught of holidays, events, and the beautifully decorated home that becomes the backdrop to all our holiday movie marathons, the family dinners, and eventually, opening presents. I sat down with local interior designer, Shaunna Cooper of Three & Me Designs, to talk about all things holiday decorating.
“Start with a focal point, this is probably going to be your tree. During the holiday season, the tree ends up becoming the gathering place for dinners, parties, events, and eventually, Christmas morning where all the presents are opened.”
QUESTION: What is step one? Where should someone start when they start to decorate for the holidays?
First step is the focal point, this is probably going to be your tree. Start with figuring out where your tree will be. During the holiday season, the tree ends up becoming the gathering place for dinners, parties, events, and eventually, Christmas morning where all the presents are opened. The tree is where all the photos get taken throughout the month as well. As you think about placement, maybe consider moving some furniture around in order to have perfect tree placement.
QUESTION: What would step two be? We have the perfect tree placement, now what?
Decide your color scheme or theme. Shaunna has been doing blue and silver for her colors over the past few years, incorporating the color elements in her tree as well as amazing handmade ornaments (keeps your tree unique!) from her kiddos. The color scheme (or theme) starts at the tree and plays into all other decor elements throughout the home. This is a good way to keep everything cohesive.
QUESTION: How do you add decorations over time? Do you have to buy new decorations every year?
No, it is possible to not buy new things every year. However, you can add elements over time. If you have a red and green color scheme, you can add gold pieces and grow it over time. This also helps build a collection and allows you to find new ways to incorporate your decor year after year. You don’t have to bring out everything in the storage bins. Focus on one color scheme or one theme and let the rest stay in storage to be brought out another year.
