Kimber Patterson | kimber.patterson@citylifestyle.com

It’s surprising how many undiscovered things there are in a state where we’ve lived most of our lives. There are a multitude of diverse spots in and around the Treasure Valley to discover, whether it’s a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail or road trip to take in nature and the surrounding scenery, or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. As spring approaches, it symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds at home, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our community and state and the desire to explore and enjoy it further. For our April issue, we wanted to share how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore around Idaho. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in Meridian and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Instagram. If an opportunity arises to get out and do something unusual or something you wouldn’t normally do, just do it! There are endless opportunities out there but even the smallest explorations can lead to big discoveries. I hope that the destinations featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here’s to a happy spring full of adventure and peace and sunshine.

REMEMBERING GINO GUILLERMO VUOLO GINO POURED HIS HEART AND SOUL INTO GINO’S RISTORANTE AND THE COMMUNITY

Tia Vuolo: My fondest memory of Gino is obviously the day we met. It was May 27, 1989. Having just arrived from my home in Boise, it was my second day in Napoli and my niece took my brother and I to this charming place called “Gino’s Joint.” I was introduced to Gino and fell in love right then and there. I knew I was going to stay in Italy and be with him always. I have wonderful memories of our favorite place on the Amalfi coast and all the fun, happy, and romantic days spent there. I never wanted to leave. Having Jessica, our daughter, in Italy was definitely an experience we would not forget. When we moved to Meridian… wow, what a scary exciting time. But Gino assured me again this was the right move and all would be fine. Gino could make everything fine with me and I trusted him wholeheartedly. I remember the day Gino came home and said we were opening a restaurant. I was stunned because I didn’t even know he could cook, which he assured me he could. Having our son Vincent was also a time in our life that we were so happy about. Gino loved his children so much. And then the grandchildren came along and stole his heart again. I have so many memories of our lives together. He was such a great husband, father and grandfather. There will never be another man like him and I am so lucky to have had him in my life. Jessica Vuolo: My most fond memories are the ones of us simply sitting together in the living room, lights down low listening to Andrea Bocelli just talking, laughing and dancing with you. There were also the times we took rides in your cars going as fast as we could because you always confused yourself with Mario Andretti, or the nights the four of us stayed up late watching movies and cooking steak and lobster tails which we dipped in our special fry sauce. Everyone always says I’m just a mini you! I take that as the highest compliment in the world and wouldn’t have it any other way. I love you for infinity.

Editor’s Note: Gino Vuolo was born in Naples, Italy and would have turned 60 on April 27. He grew up in New York, where his father opened a restaurant in the Empire State Building. After 20 years in New York, Gino moved back to Naples. In 1996, Gino and Tia opened the first Gino’s Italian Ristorante in downtown Boise. Eventually, a second location opened in Meridian, where it is still loved today.

wanting to live in a place where they can access the mountains, or they can jump on their bike, or where they can get to a river, and they can have a good work experience and not be fighting the kinds of congestion and other downsides you find in other states and other cities.”

FARM TO TABLE MEAL DELIVERY AND PRIVATE CHEF SERVICES Food is more than a hobby for Danielle Christine. It’s a lifestyle. No matter the occasion, you are likely to find her dreaming up her next recipe, documenting her most recent food encounter, or perusing the closest farmer’s market. “We weren’t born to work and spend every moment of our free time figuring out how to feed ourselves. We were born to explore, to learn, to create; and when you’re planning your next adventure, the last thing you should have to sacrifice is food. That’s where we come in,” Chef Danielle explains. Say goodbye to the tedious tasks that make up your weekly meal planning. No more grocery shopping, recipe planning, or the dreaded kitchen clean-up. According to Chef Danielle, “Our seasonal, rotating menus are designed with a deep understanding that great food experiences are more than just great ingredients. We believe how the food looks is just as important as how it tastes.” Sign up for a Haute Foods weekly meal subscription online by Friday at 12:00pm, or find them throughout the week on the Crave Delivery App.

pursue your passions In Idaho, spring is a very special season on the annual calendar. With warmer days, new adventures await. Here are a few that are worth a weekend trip to the nearby Wood River Valley, home to the small towns of Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley, and Bellevue and surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes.

Wildflower Walks It’s a bounty of beauty when the wildflowers bloom at various parts of the valley during peak flowering season from April – July. Lower elevation hiking trails get blooms as early as April and the blooms continue through July in the higher elevations. Walking on mountain hillsides through fields of colorful mountain lupine, bright gold arrowleaf balsamroot, and many other gorgeous wildflowers, is an ‘awe’ inspiring experience.

Mountain Biking The valley is a mecca for mountain biking with over 450 miles of bike friendly single-track trails plus plenty of scenic gravel backcountry roads for those who prefer a different type riding. In the early spring, April and May, the best dry mountain biking trails are just outside of Hailey. Later in the spring and summer, the trails in the northern part of the valley open for all types of two wheeled adventuring.

IDAHO’S MOONSCAPE Craters of the Moon is one of Idaho’s largest geographical destinations. Being alone in the silence of more than 2000 year old lava is both eerie and astounding. The very fine rock that crunches under your feet offer a sensation of what it may feel like to walk on the moon. The views at the summit are magnificent as the largest of the three craters is the deepest known on Earth. From the highest viewpoint you can see out and over the lava fields pinpointing dried out streams where lava once flowed through 1,117 square miles.

These lava streams solidified at certain points creating cavities underneath the surface where it continued to flow forming now-empty tunnels that pushed lava over the endless overlook of the uninhabitable landscape. One of these lava cavities is called the Indian Lava Tunnel which stretches over 800 feet long and is over 25 feet deep in some areas. After exploring this particular tunnel, we exited through one of the three passages and noticed what appeared to be post volcanic ash. However, it was actually a light snow fall that quickly turned into a complete white out. As usual we experienced the drastic and unpredictable weather patterns that Mother Nature offers us here in Idaho, and on a day that was forecasted to be sunny with not a cloud in the sky! If you make it out to Craters of the Moon, we promise you will not regret the journey! Information: BoiseState.edu/sps-andruscenter/ I am sprawled on the spongy tundra at the end of the “day,” watching as the summer solstice sun completes an undulating orbit through the sky. Here, well above the Arctic Circle, the long, languid days offer a tantalizing glimpse of the wealth of nature that was once America. My husband Dan and I have joined thousands of Porcupine caribou migrating north out of the Brooks Range. Their route (and ours) follows the Hulahula River to the Beaufort Sea in an ancient circuit to calve their young. It is impossible not to be gobsmacked by the experience. I am simultaneously struck by the aching beauty of this wild landscape and by a deep foreboding for the future of this superlative Last Frontier. The Arctic is not really the “top” of the world, of course, but the idea provides a useful concept for surveying the continent’s deep history. For many, the American West has long been synonymous with hope and renewal. Understanding how our unique landscape has shaped and been shaped by the diverse people who have called it “home” is the best way, ultimately, to arrive at a land ethic that allows for development and preservation. At once delicately fragile and remarkably resilient, the arid West has been vulnerable to environmental damage. The scars of centuries of exploitation here can’t hide under luxurious eastern green camouflage. Deserts, it turns out, were not meant to bloom. But the West abides. Indeed, as writer Wallace Stegner reminds us, “This is the native home of hope.” Losing Eden is my act of hope that we might yet learn the environmental lessons of the past and my valentine to the West that I love. The author of several prize-winning articles, a precedent-setting Expert Witness Report and Testimony on Stream Navigability upheld by the Utah Supreme Court, and co-author of the Encyclopedia of American National Parks, Dr. Dant is also an advisor and interviewee for Ken Burns’ forthcoming documentary film The American Buffalo. She is currently working on the second edition of her book Losing Eden: An Environmental History of the American West (Wiley, 2017)

Extreme Sledding at Over 81 mph Meridian’s Andrew Blaser represented the USA in the sport of Skeleton at the Beijing Winter Olympics ARTICLE BY KENDALL HOULTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY IBSFSLIDING + PROVIDED

Meridian Lifestyle caught up with Olympian and Meridian native Andrew Blaser as he was heading to the closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Olympics on February 20th. “The Olympics have been a really awesome experience as a whole,” Blaser said. “For most athletes just being here is an honor. We have all worked for four years to have the opportunity to put on a Team USA uniform.” The village for Skeleton athletes in Yanqing districts is about 58 miles northwest of the Chinese capital. ”Our village was just sliding sports and alpine skiing so we were a little secluded and had some major travel time to get to other events if we chose to do so,” Blaser explained, “Altogether the support I felt and the

feeling of peace watching the world come together through sports is incredible.” Skeleton is a winter sliding sport in which the athlete rides a small sled, known as a skeleton bobsled (or sleigh), down a frozen track while lying face down and head-first, reaching speeds over 81 mph and 5 g in gravity forces. Blaser was a standout track and field athlete at the University of Idaho before he transitioned to Skeleton, winning his first-ever international medal in his first season competing on the North American Cup (NAC) tour in 2015-2016. Congratulations to Andrew and the other USA Olympians who brought home 8 Gold, 10 Silver and 7 Bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics.

“This track is especially technically challenging,” said Andrew Blaser. The Yanqing National Sliding Centre known locally as the Flying Snow Dragon, has drawn attention for its signature, 370-degree, 217-meter continuous loop at C11, aka the Spiral, which subjects athletes to 4-G forces for some seven seconds and spits them out at about 75 miles per hour AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Empowering

Creativity GETTING TO KNOW THE MERIDIAN ARTS COMMISSION

Struggling cities or schools must often make the tough decision to push art aside in order to fund more pressing matters. This is especially difficult because art is one of the few things that lifts us up during trying times. The Meridian Arts Commission (MAC) is committed to creating an exceptional quality of life by celebrating the history and culture of the city. Since its establishment in 2006 the Meridian Arts Commissioners who are appointed by the Mayor have been dedicated to engaging residents by creating opportunities to experience or create art. They empower artists to create great work, ensure children can learn creative skills, establish venues that are dedicated to art experiences, and much more. In 2020, MAC implemented a five year strategy to support the challenges of promoting community art and addressing community engagement. For more information on how you can become involved, stop by the Initial Point Gallery on the third floor of Meridian City Hall or visit meridiancity.org/mac/
