it has been a while since I have gone “back to school,” I still get that doomsday feeling I had in my youth when I enjoyed summer vacation and saw it drawing to a close at the end of August. Summer is not over yet! Let’s get out and explore this great state while we can. In our Water & Woods feature, Roger shows us how to go "glamping" in Idaho. There is nothing like getting away for a last-minute trip with the family, and Roger teaches us how to do it in style. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets!

AROUND TOWN

CLIMBING HOME PRICES IN ADA COUNTY New construction sales have gained more of the total market share in Ada County. This influences the overall median sales price of homes in the area. In the existing home segment, the median sales price has risen due to low inventory, especially in the lower price range. An increase in inventory in the spring and resulting sales were primarily seen in the upper-end of the market. The median sales price for existing homes in Ada County rose to $309,900 in March 2019, an increase of 6.9% yearover-year and a record high for the county. An increase in sales of higher-priced existing homes has contributed to the higher median sales price for existing homes.

MOMS TODAY FACE A COMMON CHALLENGE BALANCING WORK, FAMILY AND PERSONAL TIME. Making time for exercise can seem like the biggest challenge of all and often falls through the cracks, yet it is one of the most important things we can do to improve mood, increase energy, build a positive self-image and help avoid future health problems. After moving to Boise, Summer Walters was looking for a way to get out, connect with other moms and exercise without having to leave her kids at the gym.

SECURITY AND COMFORT FROM ROCKY

ROCKY 3 1/2 YEARS

With 15 years of experience as a correctional officer and a certified canine master, Greg Tank found the right fit teaming up with Rocky, a 3 1/2-year-old Boxer, to form a unique security team at St.

Security Dog

Luke’s Hospital. Rocky is a tracking dog who is also trained to deescalate a potentially volatile situation and search the premises for dangerous contraband. He has not only passed the Good Citizen Canine test but is also a certified explosive detection dog and has received advanced obedience training. Despite all of his security training, Greg emphasizes that at the hospital he also receives many “Rocky Requests.” Often those requests are for relieving tension and anxiety in patients and providing grief relief to hospital workers. Rocky simply delivers those requests by way of snuggles and calming comfort. “He is known to take a screaming and threatening situation, and just by his presence and experience, he is able to diffuse the situation without having to attack—which is a safer resolution for the patients and the staff,” Greg says.

Meridian Lifestyle | August 2019

Parks and Recreation offers two styles of yurts for camping: park yurts and backcountry yurts.

Park yurts are located within Idaho state parks, and each is about 20 feet in diameter with a plywood floor, canvas and hardwood sidewalls and a skylight. With lockable wood doors, windows with screens and storm flaps, the yurts are weatherproof, peaceful and secure. Prices start around $60 per night, not including reservation fees. Because park yurts and cabins are in state parks, recreation options abound—whether hiking, biking, boating or a myriad of other activities, and they’re nestled in some of Idaho’s most iconic and scenic places. Backcountry yurts are located in the Idaho City area on national forest land. They are secluded and more off the beaten path. These yurts are located to be base camps for backcountry snow sports, but they’re also good for summer camping. Some require you to hike a short way to get to them, which means you will be carrying your gear and food with you, but wheelbarrows are available at the yurts for convenience. A cabin means you don’t have to set up a tent, tow an RV or worry about the weather.

Twelve state parks offer cabins for rent ranging from simple to extravagant. Basic cabins are small, one-room structures with bunks, a small table and covered decks. They have power, heat and air conditioning, but no kitchens or bathrooms (they’re located nearby). They sleep up to five people, depending on the cabin. Prices start around $50 per night, not including reservation fees. If you want to go full luxury, some offer cabins that are basically fully furnished vacation rentals. Whatever you choose, remember these are popular rentals, so you might have a hard time reserving one for a summer weekend, but you can probably find one midweek. When selecting a yurt or cabin, spend some time on Idaho Parks and Recreation’s website at ParksAndRecreation.Idaho.gov to find out exact

Late-season camping in a yurt is warm and cozy thanks to a wood stove. Some park cabins like this one of Henry’s Lake give you a waterfront access.

details of the yurts/cabins. Some parks allow pets in yurts, but check before you reserve. Reservations for backcountry yurts can be made online or by calling 1.888.922.6743 up to nine months in advance of your stay and no later than 48 hours prior to your intended arrival. For reservations less than 48 hours prior to arrival, call 208.514.2418. The demand tends to lighten up in September and even more in October, which is still a great month for camping. Don’t hesitate to go even further into fall, because the so-called offseason is still a nice time to visit cabins and yurts. You’re totally protected from the weather, so if a fall storm rolls through, go inside and curl up by the wood stove or heater with a good book and relax. After all, you’re camping.

WHEN OR HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN ART? I can’t even remember a time that I haven’t been interested in art; my mother is also an artist, so I guess I have just followed in her footsteps. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I am most proud of my AP portfolio this year. Going into it, I didn’t realize how hard and rigorous it would be to get all 24 pieces done in time, but I was able to do it, and I’m proud of that. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE CAREER GOALS? , i i a w a H m o r F ig Island The B

THIS SUMMER, MY FAMILY VISITED THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII. I was especially excited because I got to go with my grandparents, uncles and aunt. We spent the first half of our trip on the Kona side of the island. We had a busy three days exploring the different beaches searching for sea turtles, going to a luau and heading out on our first snorkeling trip to Kealakekua Bay. On our way over to Hilo, we stopped for malasadas at Tex Drive-In and stopped at the Waipio Valley Lookout. In Hilo, we explored waterfalls, went on a hike down to the ocean and found sea turtles at the Punalu’u Black Sands Beach. We also went to Volcano National Park. Our last stops before we got on the airplane to come home were the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo where we saw tigers and Richardson Ocean Park. I love playing at the beach.

“I loved our snorkeling trip. I used a snorkel board so I could see all the fish and coral under water. The yellow fish were my favorite.” “Every day I kept my eyes open for rainbows and usually found them. I don’t get to see them very often at home.” “Hawaii had a lot of fun beaches for us to play on. I broke my papa’s sandcastles and ran away from the ocean waves.” “I loved exploring all the black volcanic rock on the island. It was easy to find on the beaches and in Volcano National Park.” “I ate delicious seafood including sushi, one of my favorite things to eat. I always like to order the pink sushi.” To follow more of Raven’s travel adventures, follow her on Instagram, @CSGinger, or visit CSGinger.com.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Inspired b y S u c c e s s PHOTOGRAPHY FOOTSTEPS PHOTOGRAPHY, VALERIE MUSIC

Lindy Settle + THOUGHTFUL + BUBBLY AND OUTGOING + CREATIVE AND PASSIONATE + CREATOR, OWNER OF LINDY’S TRAVELING TREATS

WHAT SET YOU ON YOUR CAREER PATH? I was working full-time at St. Luke’s and making cookies after work and on the weekend, and I realized I had to cut back somewhere. With support at home and my St. Luke’s family at work, I was able to go parttime at the hospital so I could continue to grow my cookie business, Lindy’s Traveling Treats. That was fall 2016—one of the scariest and most rewarding things I have ever done!

WHAT ARE YOU PROUD OF? I am proud that at the age of 37 I discovered my passion, and at the age of 38, I was brave enough to pursue it full-time. I think I am most proud of the example I am setting for my daughters, teaching them that you can do anything you set your mind to and to find a tribe that promotes growth and supports you. I really believe that it takes a village, and I am so blessed to have an amazing, diverse village supporting me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS? My biggest piece of advice is to set boundaries for yourself so that your passion is always that; burnout can sneak up on you. I am still learning how to balance family and work. I’d say that it’s important to reflect on why you started your own business. For me, it was to have a more flexible schedule to allow me more time with my family. I often get caught up taking too many orders, working late nights and putting my family second. It’s a continuous struggle as I try to unlock the secret of a healthy work/life balance. I guess I’d say to keep on keeping on and try to do better tomorrow than you did today. 34
