D r i n k to Yo u r H e a lt h THE BOISE CO-OP’S JUICE AND SMOOTHIE BAR OFFERS A GORGEOUS VARIETY OF BEVERAGES THAT ARE SUPER HEALTHY AND TASTE AMAZING

THE JUICE AND SMOOTHIE BAR AT THE BOISE CO-OP USES ONLY THE BEST ORGANIC PRODUCE (LOCAL WHEN IN SEASON). Drinks are made to order so you’ll enjoy the ultimate flavor and nutritional value. When you peruse the menu, you’ll find something for everyone, even the most vegetable-averse picky eaters! Options include smoothies that are thick and often dessert-like. And the juices? Well, we think of them as yummy tonics. Here’s one of our favorites.

THE FOOTHILLS SUNSET 12 OUNCES, $6.49 16 OUNCES, $7.99

One of our most popular fresh juices is also one of the very best for anyone with an active lifestyle. Sweet and earthy with a gorgeous fiery hue, it’s packed with vitamins and minerals from four superfood vegetables: ++ Fresh beets are high in iron and folate, along with a nutrient the body can convert to nitric oxide, which supports healthy circulation. Additionally, it provides the amino acid betaine, which can improve liver function.  ++ Celery adds a crisp flavor and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Weekend (or week-long) warriors will appreciate its magnesium content that can help relax sore muscles.  ++ Carrots are known for their high beta-carotene content, which the body can convert to vitamin A that supports night vision and may help ward off macular degeneration. It may also help protect the skin against dryness and sun damage (though you’ll still want to use a good sunscreen). ++ Finally, the Foothills Sunset gets a punch of spice from fresh, organic ginger, which has anti-inflammatory properties and helps warm the body (skiers and snowboarders, take note!). It’s also great to help settle an upset stomach and tastes amazing.

Workout Like a Firefighter OR AT LEAST TRY

PROMOTE PHYSICAL RESILIENCY AND REDUCE PREVENTABLE INJURIES FOR OUR MEMBERS THROUGH EDUCATION AND COACHING.” The physical rigors required of first responders is nothing short of intense, something most people could never do. Without knowing what they will face when responding to a call, firefighters must be up to the physical strains required of their bodies. So, it comes as no surprise that firefighters are expected to keep up a daily workout regimen in order to keep in optimal physical and mental performance. But there wasn’t always a formal regimen or system in place for the firefighters in the Meridian Fire Department. But now, thanks to Luke Smillie and his team, that has changed. We sat down with Meridian Fire Department Chief Mark Niemeyer at Meridian Station #1 and Chief Luke Smillie and learned about what it really takes to be physically ready for the job. Hired in 2003, Luke Smillie recalls the earlier days; “We had fitness testing as part of the beginning process and that was difficult, and at that time we went through a nine-week academy and as part of that academy we had to get physically drained every day. When I got out of the academy it was okay, you're on your own. So, there was never any follow up. There wasn't a fitness program in place for the department so guys just kind of did their own thing. Some guys just chose not to do anything. Our equipment in our station wasn't really standardized. We did have some of the same stuff but not full standardization. So eventually, a couple of years after getting hired, I found CrossFit®.” 18

WORKOUT LIKE A FIREFIGHTER

(CON TI N U ED)

Fast forward many years later, Smillie recalls how he was called upon to implement his passion for fitness in the fire service into a program that would benefit all personnel. “I knew the direction I wanted to go, so we formed a committee and we did some research. We wanted to make sure we covered all our bases. We looked at a lot of different programs that are out there. A lot of them are similar but we ended up choosing CrossFit® as a basis for the departments.” When I asked him to elaborate on the workout and benefits for the members, here is what he said: “There’s 10 fitness principles that we kind of go by with our workouts. Since we program our own workouts, we have nine trainers right now. We started off with six and we just got approved for three more. So, we're trying to keep at least two or three trainers on every shift available to aid the members. The 10 fitness principles that go into each one of our workouts are endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.” All of the 10 fitness principles make sense too when you think about how each of them apply to the rigors of a typical day in the field for a firefighter. “We try to hit all those which usually do get hit in every workout in some shape or form. The workouts are high intensity and that is going to be different for each individual. We have 20-year-old firefighters and we have guys in their forties, like me, and even older that who can't bring that level of intensity. The intensity of a 20-year-old versus my level of intensity is going to be different, but it's still just as beneficial. We really encourage them to make these workouts powerful, but more importantly, we want to educate our members on moving correctly. We really focus on form and technique first before we increase the load of the weight and things like that.” The whole idea is to reduce and prevent injuries while upholding their mission of promoting physical resiliency and reduce preventable injuries through educating their members by coaching and teaching. Smillie adds, “There's nine foundational movements that we focus on; the air squat, the overhead squat, front squat, the deadlift, the sumo deadlift high pull, the medicine ball clean, the shoulder press, the push press and the push jerk. Everything is basically based off of those nine moves and every workout is scalable.” It’s not always about the physical though. They also prepare their members mentally. 20

WORKOUT LIKE A FIREFIGHTER

(CON TI N U ED)

“WHEN TALKING ABOUT THE PHYSICAL WORKOUT AND TRAINING, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE IN PLACE FOR YOUR MEMBERS TO DO MENTALLY TO PREPARE FOR THE JOB?” “In the fire service, we have got an acute awareness of what is going on right now that maybe historically we haven't had. The mental workload that we face, the things that we see, the things that we do, with 27 years in public safety, I grew up in an era and a culture where you didn't talk about things, you didn't let on that things are bothering you. Fortunately, that has changed where people are now being encouraged to talk about it.” -Meridian Fire Department Chief Mark Niemeyer. So much so that at the state level they are working on some PTSD legislation to get that recognized, to give people in the service the help that they need. Niemeyer continues, “I do think there's a correlation between mental health and physical health as there's a mental health component to physical fitness, right? These guys did a terrific job putting this program together to ensure that we have tracking and education. I'm a 50-year-old guy now and I can't do most of the exercises at the same level. But it's scalable to the degree that I can work out. To address your question of physical fitness and how it ties to the mental health of our members, the physical fitness helps them deal mentally with what they see on a daily basis. There's certainly a correlation there.” Smillie adds, “We have to maintain a level of fitness. Not only do we need to take care of ourselves, we owe it to the community and to our brothers and sisters that are standing next to us, working with us.” To see a snapshot of what the Meridian fire fighters do in a daily workout, visit their CrossFit® page at meridianfirefit.com. Who knows, maybe you too can workout like a firefighter.

THE KEY TO SETTING SUCCESSFUL GOALS 1. Eat Better THE NEW YEAR FILLS US WITH ENERGY TO RISE TO NEW CHALLENGES. We feel inspired to achieve new goals. We resolve to be better. But a few weeks go by, and slowly we drift from our targets. Here are some tried-and-true tips for staying on track with New Year’s resolutions once and for all. + IMAGINE. Start with your target. Figure out exactly what you want looks like. Journaling this is especially helpful. + PLAN. Once you have a picture of  your target in mind, choose two to three small tasks you can accomplish that will help you get closer to it. For example, if your resolution is to eat

healthier, choose something specific like eating five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. “Eat more fruit” is not specific enough. Figure out how much, how many, when, where and how you will do it, and make sure your tasks are attainable. Nobody is perfect all the time. Saying, “I am going to eat five servings of fruit every single day for three months” is a specific, worthy goal to aspire to, but it’s far more achievable to say, “I am going to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables at least five days a week” since nobody is perfect and unforeseen circumstances can arise. Then write down the tasks you have chosen. + TRACK. After you choose and record your tasks, all that is left is to work the plan every single day and track it. Get a

If you do break it, shake it off and start a new chain.* + EVALUATE AND TWEAK. Set a time limit such as one month for your action plan. At the end of that time, reevaluate how you are progressing toward your target. Change your tasks as necessary and then work the new plan for another month. + It is important that your action plan is achievable. + MAYOR OF MERIDIAN

Growing up, watching my dad coach, I learned many ence on my career path. My parents raised me with a focus on faith, family and community. And in watching my dad coach, I also learned the importance of empowering our youth. This is a major reason that as mayor I have focused on youth. One initiative that has made a difference in Meridian is the Meridian Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. Teens in our community have found their voice and a city that cares where they can effect real change. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? My family is my biggest motivation as I hope they feel Meridian is home and a place they want to raise their children. I’m also motivated by our community. I love Meridian. When someone is in need, it’s amazing to see how quickly people band together to help others. There really is more good in this world than we realize.  WHAT ARE YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? We are guided by the CARE Values at the City of Meridian, which are the fundamentals of success: Customer

Service,

Accountability,

Respect

and

Excellence. These values make the City one of the best places to work, and in turn, our community is one of the top locations to call home. I also enjoy reading, which is an important part of gaining knowledge and insight along the path to success. I am always learning.
