Summer has arrived, and with it comes one of my favorite editions of the year, our annual Men’s Issue.

This issue is filled with inspiration, adventure, and a few ideas to help you make the most of the season ahead. We are especially excited to share a feature on water-focused road trips right here in Texas. If you are looking for a refreshing escape without going too far, this one is for you.

You will also find a beautiful and thoughtful fea ture on artist Jim Koehn. Spending time learning about his creative process and what inspires his work was a true highlight, and I think you will feel that connection as you read his story.

Nearly 500 Trees Planted Through Zadok x Trees For Houston Partnership

Zadok Jewelers is continuing its long-standing partnership with Trees For Houston. Corpus Christi

Three hours from Houston

Just a short drive from Houston, Corpus Christi offers an easy and memorable coastal escape. With over 220 days of sunshine each year, the city is a great destination for year-round visits filled with relaxation, adventure, and culture.

Corpus Christi delivers more than just sun and sand. Visitors can enjoy horseback rides along the water, electric Moke rentals, birdwatching along the Central Flyway, and sea turtle hatchling releases. Each provides opportunities to delve into nature and make the most of the Texas shoreline.

The 1.5-mile Downtown Seawall is ideal for walking, biking, or surrey rides, with scenic views and iconic landmarks like the Selena Memorial. On the water, visitors can enjoy a guided evening LED kayak tour or enjoy floating yoga classes for a fun twist on a typical fitness routine.

From kayaking and fishing to surfing, hiking, biking, and boating, the island offers many ways to explore the great outdoors. With 32 miles of coastline, Galveston delivers high-energy experiences and calming moments for those who prefer a slower pace. Historic Downtown Galveston offers a journey through time. Waco Surf

For Houstonians looking to escape the city for a weekend, Waco Surf offers a mix of surf, wakeboarding, and family-friendly activities.

The hub of the water hotspot is the 2.5-acre Surf Lagoon, powered by PerfectSwell® technology and designed to simulate waves inspired by global surf spots. Recognized by publications including Texas Monthly and Southern Living, the lagoon caters to professionals and beginners, with lessons available for those new to the sport.

The Cable Park is where riders of all levels can experience rotating rails and ramps. Guests can access the beach next to the lagoon, which includes surf and lodging packages or is available as an add-on for Water Park and Cable Park visitors.

For rest between waves, beachside cabanas are available for rent and include beach passes for up to ten guests. Wedge Cabanas, located by the Lil’ Wedgie wading pool, offers shaded seating for up to eight people.

Those looking to extend their surfing vacation can choose from several overnight accommodations, including the beachfront Waco Surf Hotel, lakeside cabins, private lake houses, and RV spots. The Summer Stay & Surf package offers early surf session booking, discounted Water Park Day Passes, weekday Cable Park access, and beach entry.

Last summer, Waco Surf introduced “The Lil’ Wedgies,” small slides designed for tiny surf enthusiasts. Summer food and beverage updates include new menus at Surfside Shack, Wedge Grill, The Saloon, Star Bar, and The Dive Bar.

Port Aransas

Four hours from Houston

Less than four hours from Houston, Port Aransas offers a combination of beachside recreation, cultural history, and local attractions on Mustang Island. Referred to as “Port A,” this town features 18 miles of shoreline and is a favorite of visitors looking for various things to do while on vacation.

The area’s history traces back over 4,500 years to when it first formed as submerged sandbars. The Karankawa Indians were among the island’s earliest inhabitants, with Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca making contact in 1528. These days, fishing still has a stronghold, with options ranging from deep-sea charters to pier and bay fishing. Outdoor enthusiasts will be thrilled by kayaking,

jet-skiing, surfing, and birdwatching at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center and the Port Aransas Nature Preserve. Cultural attractions on this part of the Texas coast include the Patton Center for Marine Science Education, Chapel on the Dunes, Lydia Ann Lighthouse, and Farley Boat Works. Each offers visitors insight into marine life, local architecture, and maritime heritage.

Dining options on the golf cart-friendly island range from coastal seafood to international cuisine, with many restaurants offering “cook your catch” services. Local favorites, including Cinnamon Shore and Palmilla Beach, as well as cottages and vacation rentals, make finding the perfect place to sleep easy.

Lake Conroe

1.5 hours from Houston

Just a short drive from Houston, Lake Conroe offers a nearby escape filled with outdoor recreation and lakeside relaxation. Visitors can spend the day water skiing, boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, or fishing.

Margaritaville Lake Resort sits on 186 acres of lakefront property and features a water park with slides and a lazy river, boat rentals, and courts for tennis and pickleball. The resort also offers seasonal events and year-round activities for all ages.

Golfers can play through a pine-shaded course with bunkers and waterfalls. Anglers will find some of Texas’ top freshwater fishing here, with bass tournaments, guided fishing trips, and opportunities to catch crappie, catfish, and bluegill. Plenty of dining options exist, including five restaurants at Margaritaville and waterfront views at LandShark Bar & Grill. The Southern Empress riverboat offers onboard meals and live dueling pianos for a unique dinner experience.

Visitors don’t have to worry about lugging gear; local marinas and rental shops along the shoreline have everything necessary for a great day on the lake.

NOBU BLENDS GLOBAL PRECISION, JAPANESE TECHNIQUE, AND TEXAS INFLUENCES INTO A REFINED, CHEF-DRIVEN DINING EXPERIENCE.

Few restaurant brands have sustained their reputation quite like Nobu, a brand built on consistency and a clear point of view. Nobu has more than 50 restaurants worldwide, including a growing hotel portfolio. In Houston, Nobu combines Texas influence with Japanese techniques. THE WAGYU

The A5 wagyu sourced from Japan’s Miyazaki prefecture is known for its consistency and fine marbling. Miyazakigyu has earned top honors at the “Wagyu Olympics” and repeated Prime Minister’s Awards. Preparation is precise. The beef is cut, seasoned, and brought to temperature before being grilled rare. It is then rested, sliced, and presented on a hot volcanic stone.

“The wagyu is finished tableside with flamed brandy, which elevates the sweetness of the beef,” says Nobu Corporate Executive Chef Thomas Buckley. Guests are invited to continue cooking the slices to their preference, with the stone set over rock salt and aromatics such as peppercorns, thyme, and rosemary.

THE SAUCE

Yuzu truffle butter adds acidity and depth, cutting through the fat while amplifying the overall flavor. “The amazu tosazu brings a sweet acidity with a subtle smokiness from bonito flakes that complements the wagyu’s natural umami,” Buckley explains. Anticucho pays homage to Nobu’s Japanese and Peruvian influences, offering a contrast that pairs well with the beef’s richness.

THE VEGETABLES

Seasonal vegetables round out the plate, with options such as asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, baby corn, radish, broccoli, and carrot. They are sautéed and finished with sake, soy, and a touch of butter. “The vegetables act as a textural foil to the final dish,” Buckley notes, providing balance without competing for attention.

THE COCKTAIL

“A well-made Old Fashioned goes well with any good steak, and our Nobu Old Fashioned is no exception,” says Nobu Area Beverage Manager Joseph Cosby. Made with Michter’s Bourbon, orange brandy, and kuromitsu, it delivers depth and sweetness that stands up to the wagyu. For a lighter option, the Nobu Sidecar uses Iwai Tradition Japanese Whisky, orange brandy, and yuzu, which are similar to the dish’s citrus notes, while adding a gentle smoky flavor that complements the grill.

TRANSFORMS EVERYDAY PLACES INTO NOSTALGIC WATERCOLOR SCENES, CAPTURING PERSONAL MEMORIES AND LOCAL HISTORY.

If Jim Koehn’s paintings feel familiar at first glance, it is because they are places you’ve been or have been meaning to visit. His work centers on Houston’s most recognizable locations and are about memories and the places that shape the city.

“All of my paintings are of places that I have a direct connection to in some way since arriving in Houston back in 1981,” he says. “I’ve heard my art described as stylized realism, nostalgic, idealized realism, and others. I find myself typically referring to my artistic style as stylized realism.”

That personal tie often determines what makes a piece meaningful. One recent painting of the Hobbit Cafe is a favorite for several reasons. “I painted this one because I have lots of great memories of taking my daughters there. I'm very pleased with how the finished painting turned out, and the response from people has been great.”

That combination of personal history and the public’s response helps to shape much of his work. Some pieces resonate because of technical execution, others because they allow viewers to reflect on their own memories of that particular location.

Koehn’s process is methodical and based on years of experience. “After deciding on which place I want to paint, I generally do as much research as I can to find out what year that place opened, any interesting history to go along with my own story.”

He relies on reference photos, but he also revisits locations as he is painting, sometimes just to reconnect. From there, the work moves from pencil sketch to ink drawing, then watercolor. Each piece of art shows small architectural and environmental details that make it precise while still maintaining a bit of whimsy.

One of the biggest decisions in Koehn’s artistic process is not about the paintings themselves, but deciding what is going to

come next. “One of my biggest decisions in the creative process is narrowing down which place I want to paint next,” he says. “I have so many places that I want to add to this collection that picking my next painting is sometimes the most challenging part. That and finding the time to work on all the paintings I hope to get to.”

His work is available both online and in stores around the city. “The best way to see all of my paintings is on my Etsy site,” he says. For those

who want to choose a piece in person, Koehn is a regular exhibitor at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Bayou City Art Festival, and the Nutcracker Market. “It’s always great to get out and meet people at shows, talk about art, and talk about all the unique places that make Houston such a great city.”

Has it been too long since your tribe gathered to rib and one-up each other as only guys can do? To help plan a getaway for just the guys, City Lifestyle gathered an eclectic list of locations offering tons of things to see, do and experience. Here’s hoping the only ribs one will get on this guys’ getaway are the kind to hold in hands while barbecue sauce drips onto shirts. Scottsdale/Phoenix

There’s no other tournament on the PGA Tour like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and no hole like the legendary 16th, where 20,000 boisterous fans boo the tee shots that miss the green. The other 51 weeks of the year, golfers can play TPC Scottsdale or try one of more than 200 courses in the Scottsdale area, a top golf destination. Another winter event is the BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction. Even if one’s only collector car was a Hot Wheels, it’s a blast to peruse the acres of autos for sale before heading inside to watch the unique or renowned cars crossing the auction block. When it’s time to get moving, the strenuous hike up Camelback Mountain in nearby Phoenix

is a bucket-list item. Need a more moderate trail? Experience the same magic of the majestic saguaro cactus in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

New Orleans

It’s always a party in New Orleans (NOLA), especially when it comes to festivals, many of them centered around music. Folk to funk, gospel to jazz, zydeco, blues, African and other musical styles are celebrated on the Jazz and Heritage Festival’s 12 stages. If free admission is more desired, don’t miss the French Quarter Festival featuring local musicians and food vendors representing dozens of New Orleans restaurants. Part of the fun of Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is admiring revelers’ watercraft, some of them homemade just for this festival on the banks of Bayou Saint John. If one of the festivals can’t be attended, there’s still plenty of NOLA live music, particularly the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street. And when a break from crowds is needed, take a guided swamp tour. Kitschy, yes, but it’s a hoot to cruise around on a swamp buggy while looking for alligators.

Bowling Green, Kentucky

“America’s Sports Car” is produced at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, where visitors can join guided tours to observe Corvettes being built and learn the fascinating history of these sexy autos. See examples of all Corvette generations at the National Corvette Museum. And if the need for speed is still felt, a few times a year Xtreme Experience offers driving or ride-along events in exotics like Ferraris or Lamborghinis at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. After getting all revved up, cool down at Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest known cave system in the world and a World Heritage Site, where guided tours take participants through tunnels humans have used for thousands of years. And after all this touring, the Bowling Green area is the southernmost point in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail of distilleries.

Austin

Live music rules here, with iconic venues such as Antone’s, The Continental Club, the White Horse and hundreds of other locations, from dive bars to big stages. From rock and blues to country and urban, music is heard every night of the week (and many afternoons as well). When guys are hungry, there are tons of barbeque and Tex-Mex joints. Unique food trucks are truly a thing here, with nearly 2,000 food trailers in town. Burn some calories biking or running the Southern Walnut Creek Trail or one of many paved paths. Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
