Kelly Gale Amen’s life is full of grand gestures, but his work is admired for the simplicity with which he approaches clients’ needs.
They want to keep a favorite brown sofa or have stacks of books they can’t live without. Amen will make it work. He can change the energy in a room by adding color or shifting in furniture, hanging new art and mirrors or placing a new rug or art.
The Oklahoma native who came to Houston in 1972 to work at Foley’s, quickly shifted to self-employment as an interior designer when a couple asked him to decorate their home. They were his first clients and he’s been busy ever since.
“I love the process of using things for different purposes,” said Amen, the newest inductee to the Houston Design District’s Leaders in Design. “When I interview clients, I don’t tell them what to spend. I want to flip what they already have and let the client tell me what they don’t want to keep.”
He has a generous heart and gives to many nonprofits, including AIDS Foundation Houston, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, General Stafford Space Museum, of which he was a founding member, and Cancer Below the Belt, which he founded 8 or 9 years ago. Amen is a longtime prostate cancer survivor.
He designs furniture, textiles and pillows and is launching a new line of cashmere and pashmina scarves and shawls that show off fabric patterns he has created for upholstery fabric. The first batch launches in May, and he expects the collection to grow from its initial offerings of soft woven pashminas to include some with extensive embroidery.
It’s a partnership he’s doing with Amjid Salama, the son of his longtime tailor in Kashmir, India, K. Salama & Sons, where he’s had dozens of waistcoats custom-made.
“I’m here to let people embrace what life is. Who are you now? What do you need to get rid of and what do you want to keep?”

In February, Alex and Reagan Bregman unveiled their new southwest food brand, Wild Sol featuring a range of salsas including Hot, Mild, Verde, and Mango Habanero. This new lineup of salsas is excellent for summer grilling and seasonal dishes. Every bite has the perfect amount of tang and is finished with a splash of tequila or mezcal.
Each variety of Wild Sol carries a hint of Flecha Azul — a fast-growing, premium tequila. Founded by their friends Mark Wahlberg, Aron Marquez, and Abraham Ancer, Flecha Azul was the perfect match for Wild Sol's spirited salsas.
"We needed the right brand to partner with. The tequila had to be amazing, but we also wanted a brand with a similar personality — bold, different, and passionate about innovation. That's what we love about Flecha Azul," said Wild Sol CEO Michael Posey.
The Wild Sol team, including Michael Posey, Adrienne Price, Tyler Straub, and Laurice Howard, celebrated their product launch recently after over a year of hard work. The salsas are available on WildSol.co and will soon hit shelves at H-E-B and Kroger in the coming months.
Wild Sol salsas are a great way to flavor dishes in the kitchen or on the grill. Chef John Perkins uses the Wild Sol Salsa Verde to cook delicious pork spare ribs.
BRING EXCITEMENT BACK TO THE KITCHEN WITH WILD SOL SALSA.
“As we created the Wild Sol recipes, we wanted each salsa to be versatile so that they could be used in many ways including as a garnish, to make an amazing soup, or used in grilling your favorite protein”– Michael Posey, Wild Sol CEO
Ingredients
• Two racks of pork spare ribs
• One jar of Wild Sol Salsa Verde
• Salt
• Pepper
• Cider Vinegar
• Agave syrup
• Hot honey
• Cilantro
Directions:
Remove the ribs from the package, rinse under cold water, and dry. Generously season with salt and pepper. Place on a large sheet of tin foil. Take about 1/3 of the jar of salsa and generously spread it over the top. Seal the foil tightly over the ribs and place it on a cookie sheet. Repeat with the other rack of ribs.
Cook for 2 hours at 300 degrees. Take it out of the oven, set it aside on a cutting board, and reserve the juices. Gently pour the juices out of the foil into a fat strainer. Pour off the juices and discard the fat. Pour the pork juice into the stock pan; add ¼ cup of agave syrup and 2 tbsp of cider vinegar and boil. Reduce until the mixture thickens and turns darker; whisk in two knobs of butter.
Turn the oven on to broil. Put the ribs back on a cookie sheet (should be wrapped in foil), and baste the ribs with the reduction. Put the ribs in the oven. Every 30 seconds, pull out the ribs and baste with the reduction. It will take 3 to 5 minutes for them to brown and sizzle. At this point, take the hot honey and drizzle across the top; baste one more time and put it in the oven for 30 seconds. Remove—rest 10-15 minutes. Spread the rest of the jar of salsa on top, add chopped cilantro, and serve.
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FOUR SEASONS HOTEL HOUSTON
Johnathan Jones, Beverage Manager at the Four Seasons Hotel Houston, shares tips on how to enjoy bourbon.
1. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TASTE BOURBON?
When tasting a bourbon, I use a proper tasting glass and drink it neat the first time I try it. I’ll actively think about the flavors and sensations, where they hit on the tongue, and how long the finish lasts on the palate, all the while looking at the color and viscosity.
3. IS THERE A PARTICULAR GLASS THAT YOU RECOMMEND?
Glencairn Whisky Glasses were designed to taste whisky specifically and do the best job when tasting bourbon and capturing its aromas.
2. DO YOU RECOMMEND USING A LARGE PIECE OF ICE? WHY OR WHY NOT?
A large cube is best. The bigger the cube, the less surface area to interact with the bourbon, causing slower dilution.
“As a native Texan, I lean toward pairing bourbon with great barbeque, but I also love sipping on bourbon with a bar of chocolate or a chocolate dessert.”
4. WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE BOURBON BRANDS?
They are always changing depending on availability, but my current favorites are Michter’s, Henry McKenna 10yr, and Joseph Magnus.
Bayou & Bottle offers a flavorful menu curated by chef Richard Sandoval and over 200 whiskies . Every bartender is a Certified Bourbon Steward, allowing for a knowledgeable and elevated experience. Guests can enjoy vintage barware and personalized bourbon lockers.

Travel is no longer just a luxury, it’s an investment that has the power to enrich our lives in ways that traditional financial investments cannot. It broadens our horizons, enhances personal and professional growth, and allows you to recharge your mind and body.
Crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers.
Cancún is known around the world as one of Mexico’s finest tourist destinations. Steeped in the rich history of the Mexican Caribbean, Cancún offers visitors the best that the Yucatán Peninsula has to offer. Whether you are coming for the all-inclusive resort experience or are looking to enjoy the seemingly never-ending gorgeous beaches, Cancún has it all. Unbelievably fresh and delicious seasonal cuisine, great weather, a rich cultural history, exquisitely clear turquoise blue Caribbean waters, and vibrant coral reefs are all waiting for you to explore when you arrive.
Nature lovers, environmentalists, thrill seekers, and luxury destination travel enthusiasts all have a place to call home in Cancún. Boulevard Kukulkan, more commonly known as the Hotel Zone, is home to Cancún’s most luxurious all-inclusive hotels and boasts some of the city’s finest restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping centers. This fifteen-mile-long sand bar separates the Caribbean Sea from the Laguna Inchoate. The brackish waters of
the lagoon’s nature reserve and Mangrove ecosystem offer an exciting, ecologically friendly look into the rich natural history of Cancún. On the other side of the boulevard, crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers.
The JW Marriott Resort and Spa is the place to stay while in Cancún. You'll be met by the most gracious of staff and a high level of service is standard across the property. This impeccably designed resort features multiple pools, an incredible spa, countless delicious restaurants, and a delightful lobby bar featuring over 150 signature margaritas.
Caring for the mind and body should be an essential part of everyone’s travel. A little physical exercise is a necessary element of any vacation for me. Puerto Maya Cancún combines a look into the historical Mayan culture of the Yucatán followed by an amazing speed boat tour of both the lagoon and the sea. And, just when you think it can’t get any better, it’s time to jump in and swim around. Snorkeling on the vibrant coral reefs and visiting MUSA, the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, absolutely recharges the mind, body, and soul. It is an incredible workout!
If you care to go a little further out of the city, Cenotes Zapote Eco-Tour awaits. Cenotes are natural sinkholes that expose cool, refreshing, groundwater
that is both invigorating and spiritually refreshing at the same time. There are over 6000 cenotes on the Yucatán, each one is unique and otherworldly. Floating or frolicking in the cool waters inside the earth is the ultimate spa experience. There are zip lines or diving platforms at most cenotes and they are well worth experiencing.
While it is nice to explore the “Hotel Zone”, you don't have to leave the hotel to experience fine international dining at its best!
Sacbé Beach Shack, located in the adjoining Marriott property was beyond belief. Situated directly on the sandy beaches beneath the hotel, the "beach shack" is a whimsically designed bar and dining room offering a perfect oceanside culinary experience. The freshest local ingredients were artfully combined to create a scrumptious offering that highlights regional Mexican cuisines. The mezcal lab experience with famed Master Mezcalier, Chef Benjamín Nava Vargas was an unexpected treat and opened a door to a delicious understanding and appreciation of small-batch mezcals.
Other JW Marriott Resort and Spa culinary treasures include Hana Polynesian Grill’s themed dining room. Perfectly crafty cocktails paired wonderfully with the authentic Polynesian Islands menu. The evening’s festivities were highlighted by a completely themed costumed troupe of singers and dancers performing time-honored Polynesian fire dances. While visiting, be sure to explore Kasai Izakaya, Club 91, and Bravo, a very fresh take on modern Spanish cuisine.
And, when it feels like it’s time to leave the hotel again, check out Chambao Cancún. Just think of it as an interactive curated dinner theatre experience with pop-up music, dance, fashion, and acrobatic activations staged throughout the evening.
Cancún should be at the top of everyone’s travel list in 2024. Trust me, you can thank me later. JW-Marriott.marriott.com
