“If I was to be known for anything, it would be that I am an encourager. Helping someone reaching life goals or next steps. That’s what I would like to do.”
- Michelle Giuseppetti Old
When Michelle Giuseppetti Old was younger, art was her passion. When a high school art history teacher posed the idea that great architecture was an expressive public art form, Old could see her future occupation in a whole new light.
In addition to its inherent beauty, great architecture offers functionality and performance to its users and focuses on the immediate environment and its resources. That means using more limestone in Texas and mass timber in public college jobs or being more subtle and letting a design aesthetic make a statement about what happens under a roof.
A Houston native and 2009 University of Houston graduate, Michelle began her career as an intern at Kirksey Architecture and is now its design studio director and associate vice president. A younger sister and younger brother both are architects at Kirksey and her husband, Jonathan Old, is an architect at Mark W. Todd Architects in The Woodlands. (Another sibling has a job in a science field.)
“We learn about the client, their mission and … what’s of interest to them. Pulling that story out of the client is important,” Michelle said of design inspiration. “I could design something arbitrary and cool, but it would have no soul. When you … can pull ideas from the client, that’s where the success is.”
While Kirksey handles myriad types of projects, Michelle has settled into educational and collegiate work as her specialty, but has also designed office buildings and science-tech labs. She and her team have completed The Branch School at Hightower Middle School in the Memorial area and an expansion at Yellowstone Academy in Third Ward.
Her work can be found at San Jacinto Community College (a mass timber classroom building and the engineering and technology building), Stephen F. Austin University (East Dining Hall, still under construction), Prairie View A&M University (architecture fabrication center) and Texas A&M University (Mays Business Education Complex; still under construction.)

Bobby Fierro, owner of Uptown Appliance Repair, shares his journey as an entrepreneur.
Bobby Fierro's venture into the appliance repair business wasn't just a career choice; it was a response to adversity and an observation of market demand. We sat down with Bobby as he shared the journey of Uptown Appliance Repair and its goal to become a household name in Texas.
Uptown Appliance Repair traces its roots back to the aftermath of the 2009 housing crisis, which severely impacted Bobby's parents' real estate business. To make ends meet, the family turned to reselling unwanted goods and discovered a niche in appliance sales
during garage sales. Bobby, sensing an opportunity, delved into appliance repair, initially offering his services anonymously on Craigslist.
The moment that changed everything came during an early service call, where Bobby's lack of official branding led to a client's dismissal. Determined never to repeat that experience, Bobby founded Uptown Appliance Repair in 2012. Today, the company has two locations in Houston and Dallas, with plans for a third in Austin.
According to Bobby, operating as a family business has its unique dynamics. While it provides personalized attention for each client, challenges sometimes arise from workload limitations. Nevertheless, the commitment to exceptional service and customer satisfaction has been the cornerstone of their longevity.
"We believe in setting our own standard for service," Bobby explained, highlighting their exclusive 2-year warranty and investment in factory-trained technicians as what sets them
apart from other businesses in the same industry. Notably, Uptown Appliance Repair specializes in high-end brands including Subzero, Lacanche, and Viking.
Beyond business success, Uptown Appliance Repair prioritizes community engagement. They actively participate in charitable initiatives like the DePelchin Holiday Project and sponsor local school programs, embodying a commitment to giving back.
Despite their growth, the company remains true to its roots as a family-owned business. Bobby and his brother Joe, both accomplished in their own right, oversee the company's operations. Their vision extends beyond Texas, with plans to expand nationally and venture into home warranty services.
"We want to elevate the experience for consumers," Bobby emphasized, hinting at Uptown Appliance Repair’s future as a comprehensive home solutions provider. As they continue to evolve, Bobby and his team are committed to redefining excellence in appliance repair and customer care. uptownappliancerepair.com

TAKE A BITE OUT OF HOUSTON’S BEST BURGERS THIS SUMMER SEASON.
Grilling season is here, and for many of us, that means dusting off our burger recipes and firing up the grill. But if you don't have a grill or want to avoid the summer heat by staying inside, Houston restaurants have plenty of mouth-watering burgers to satisfy any craving. High-quality ingredients are the hallmark of a good burger, and diners can choose from veggies or salmon, brisket, ground beef, or even go all out with elevated wagyu beef. There are so many options to choose from; it is nearly impossible to miss out on the joys of burger season in Houston this summer.

Top it Like it’s Hot
Looking for a twist on the traditional? Houston chefs have no shortage of tasty ways to turn a traditional burger into a more inventive (and delicious) culinary masterpiece. How about some crispy bacon or creamy avocado? Try adding a perfectly fried egg, grilled jalapeños, or a gourmet cheese blend. Chefs have found ways to breathe new life into this much-loved dish. In addition to toppings, there is no limit to how many patties fit between two buns. Try a double even triple-stacked burger. The Smothered & Covered burger from 1891 American Eatery & Bar will make you rethink hunger.
Nothing is better than a burger fresh off the grill on a soft and tasty bun, but not all bread is created equal. A perfect hamburger bun needs to resist getting soggy, not break apart, and still be soft enough to bite into. The internet will argue that potato buns are the clear winner (we are looking at you, Daily Gather), but several Houston restaurants put serious time and effort into their bread service.

Doris Metropolitan has updated its hall-of-fame sesame bun burger, which is worthy of attention. Tipping Point at Hotel ZaZa offers a sumptuous brioche bun, while Christian's Tailgate (voted best burger in Texas) offers freshly toasted buns every time.

Bora Bora offers the vacation of a lifetime with unmatched beauty and magical adventures.
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FOUR SEASONS RESORT BORA BORA
Nowhere else can you find the same combination of remote island beauty, a deep appreciation of local culture, and sunkissed luxurious pleasure as in Bora Bora. On the island of the "First Born," a stay might mean experiencing the thrill of swimming with sharks and rays, diving into the depths to see colorful coral reefs, or basking in the tropical sun for days. Visiting this French Polynesian island might also
mean kicking back in a flower crown, listening to the island's bird songs, and hearing lapping waves while enjoying the deliciously prepared catch of the day.
Bora Bora seamlessly blends stunning panoramic views with exotic fun. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters and unspoiled beauty have been a magnet for honeymooners, retirees, and families for decades. For Houstonians, a trip to the island paradise usually begins with a flight to the West Coast before a long haul to Tahiti and, finally, a puddle jump to Bora Bora. Although visitors might be tempted to stay inside their dreamy overwater bungalows, there is much to explore, see, and do on the island.
Set against the backdrop of Mount Otemanu, the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is known for its famed overwater bungalows and lavish attention to detail. The resort offers accommodations for every size group, including private villa estates with one to five bedrooms. The villas have private beach access, private pools, daily breakfast, and a personal concierge.
However, the overwater bungalows are what put Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora on the map. The spacious suites offer fantastic mountain, beach, or lagoon vistas and private balconies with direct access to the water. Even better, guests can catch underwater views without getting wet – each bungalow has portals built into the floor, making it easy to watch marine life going about their daily business. There is nothing like having a bird's-eye view of a school of fish as you brush your teeth or relax inside.
The service and hospitality are impeccable – no request is too big, and thoughtful gestures are a quiet part of every interaction. The hotel’s open design also lends itself to feeling like no one else is around. Even with the resort at nearly full capacity, it is possible to take a quiet stroll to enjoy the sights and sounds of the island with minimal interruption.
The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora offers tailor-made experiences for guests of all ages. Kids and teens have dedicated spaces and activities with other guests similar in age. The resort's activity
calendar is jam-packed with events every day, many of which are complimentary. With an emphasis on educating guests about Polynesian culture, the hands-on activities include flower crown making, textile design, and other island-centric classes led by local experts.
WiseOceans, a global provider of marine education and conservation services, plays a significant role at the resort. Guests can tour the resort's private lagoon with a WiseOcean marine biologist for a close encounter with its inhabitants; there is so much to see without ever leaving the resort. One of the highlights of a WiseOcean experience is taking part in their conservation efforts, including coral restoration.
Many excursions are also available for guests looking for off-property island adventures. Along with guided jet-ski tours, deep-sea fishing, and water sports, thrill-seekers can also book a full—or half-day adventure to swim with the island's black-tipped sharks and rays.
Those looking for a more sublime experience can book a treatment at Te Mahana Spa, which offers stunning beach and mountain views and an overwater spa suite. The spa features a full range of services; standouts include the couple's massage and Golden Sun Ritual.
A remote island like Bora Bora needs a strong culinary game, and the Four Seasons Resort's four restaurants and open-air bars deliver on taste and service. Guests can choose from Mediterranean cuisine at Arri Moana, breakfast buffets and themed dinners at Tere Nui, Asian cuisine at the popular Vaimiti, or a toes-in-the-sand experience at Fore Hoa Beach Bar & Grill. Each restaurant offers a robust wine and cocktail menu along with tempting treats for even the most discerning palates. The themed Oro'a Night dinner features Polynesian dancers and a fire dance performance – it is a genuinely can't-miss immersive experience. fourseasons.com/borabora
ENJOY COCKTAILS AND LIGHT BITES ON A YACHT EXCURSION FROM PIER 6 SEAFOOD & OYSTER HOUSE
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
In addition to delicious food and a great atmosphere, Pier 6 has added one more reason to visit their waterfront restaurant. The eatery has launched a new event series, Wine Down Wednesday cruises, in partnership with Great Escapes Yacht Charter on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
These sunset cruises aboard a 43-foot power catamaran offer guests a scenic journey on Galveston Bay. The excursion
costs $150 per person and includes two craft cocktails and chef-curated appetizers before the hour-long wine cruise.
"In addition to sharing the bounty of the Gulf at the restaurant, I'm excited guests now have the opportunity to explore Galveston Bay with us by boat," says Pier 6 restaurant owner Raz Halili.
Guests can choose from early or late excursions, with the option to book a table for dinner at Pier 6 after the cruise. For those seeking a longer getaway, Pier 6 offers chicly renovated two-bedroom condos,
known as Pier 6 Bungalows, overlooking the Bay, perfect for a relaxing staycation.
Wine Down Wednesdays are just the beginning of the unique experiences at Pier 6. With a six-slip marina, it's one of the only spots along the Bay for boaters to dock and dine. The restaurant also has a robust events menu, including cycling classes, pickleball tournaments, and holiday events. They've also expanded their outdoor patio with a second bar, an outdoor kitchen, and fire pits, making it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the Gulf Coast atmosphere. pier6seafood.com

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and whiteglove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals?
When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake.
