During this magical time of year, when the world feels fresh and full of possibility, I am especially grateful to begin another year with you. Our January Annual Health and Wellness Issue is always one of my favorites because it reflects exactly what this season invites: a chance to reset, rejuvenate, and step into a new chapter with clarity and intention. As we welcome 2026, I hope this issue serves as both inspiration and encouragement. Inside, you will find stories, experts, and resources that speak to the heart of well-being. From innovative approaches to fitness and nutrition to mindful rituals, emotional renewal, and ways to bring more balance into your everyday life, this edition was thoughtfully curated with our Memorial community in mind. What I love most about this issue is how deeply it reflects the people and businesses that make Memorial such an extraordinary place to live. Our neighborhood continues to grow as a hub for forward-thinking health and wellness, and it is exciting to share so many local practitioners, programs, and ideas that are helping residents live vibrant, intentional lives. A new year brings its own unique momentum. It invites us to pause, imagine, and begin again. AN ALPINE Take in sweeping alpine views across Switzerland’s Valais region. Photo by Rudi 1976

E S C A P E In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

A CAR-FREE ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA

An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely carfree, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets. One of the main attractions of the ski-in/skiout area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.

WHERE TO STAY

Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.

WHAT TO DO

Goms Bridge over Rhone River. Photo by Marina

Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-year-old forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn. Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-footlong suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier. CONTINUED >

THERMAL WATERS AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS IN LEUKERBAD

After miles of hiking in the Aletsch Arena, it is time to relax and recharge in the mountain village of Leukerbad.

W HERE TO STAY

Hotel Restaurant Quellenhof Leukerbad is steps away from many of the area’s best thermal pools. The hotel also has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with several regional specialties.

WHAT TO DO

View of Valais Alps in Leukerbad. Photo courtesy of Visit Leukerbad

Since the 1500s, the area has been a wellknown destination for wellness and healing due to over 65 natural hot springs that flow into the alpine village. Several public bathhouses welcome visitors year-round, including Leukerbad Therme, the largest thermal wellness resort in Europe. The family-friendly wellness center includes ten pools and a range of hot and cold plunge options. Walliser Alpentherme & Spa and Therme 51 also offer public access to the mineral-rich waters. A hike through Dala Gorge provides beautiful mountain views while traversing a 2,000foot suspension bridge over the Dala River. Hikers can also experience a 100-foot waterfall before the forested hiking trail leads back to Leukerbad. The village is considered one of the most traditional and beautiful alpine settings in the country. It lacks the pretentiousness of Switzerland’s larger metropolitan areas and offers a storybook atmosphere with a friendly small-town feel. Walking through Leukerbad reveals gorgeous chalets, small shops, bakeries, and restaurants worth exploring.

WHERE TO EAT

No trip to Switzerland is complete without fondue. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, fondue, which translates to “melt” in French, is a national dish consisting of a blend of Gruyere and Emmental cheeses. One of the oldest family-owned restaurants in Leukerbad, Restaurant Sternen offers traditional fondue along with a variety of mix-ins and dipping options. Pair the fondue with

HISTORY AND ALPS MEET IN MARTIGNY

A short train ride takes visitors to one of the largest cities in the Valais region of Switzerland. The city is a crossroads between Italy and France, with a history dating back to Roman times. Visitors can tour Roman ruins, including a well-preserved amphitheater, ancient settlements, and Roman baths.

WHERE TO STAY

Martigny Boutique Hotel is minutes from the train station and is one of the few establishments in the city employing people with disabilities. The light and bright hotel provides a comfortable base for exploring the city.

WHAT TO DO

Take the steepest funicular in the world, the Mont-Blanc Express, on a scenic ascent through the Alps. The funicular connects to a smaller train that leads to the Trient Valley on the French-Swiss border, where, at the top, a full day of activity begins. Hiking, biking, zip-lining, or traversing the Emosson Dam, which straddles France and Switzerland, are all options. The crystal clear blue waters of Emosson Lake are perfect for a picnic or a break between adventures. Back in Martigny, Barryland, the only theme park in the world dedicated to St. Bernard dogs, offers a look at the history of the dog, bred by monks in the 17th century for alpine rescue work. The Barry Foundation, founded in 2005, continues to preserve the breed and educate visitors about it. Guests can watch the dogs train, play, and interact as they learn about their role in the region. Roman influence remains visible across the city, including at Les Bains Publics at Hotel Borsari, where visitors can soak in cement wine barrels located in the hotel’s spa. The baths sit on the site of a former wine tank factory and offer a circuit of hot and cold pools in a historically inspired, wine-colored setting.

Steve Curry ’ s Braeswood Place home – called the Bendit House – was designed by architect Lars Bang. Steve Curry and Curry Boudreaux Architects designed a new canopy for Texas Orthopedic Hospital.

In any given week, architect Steve Curry could be working on an important medical facility, planning a summer camp or contemplating a YMCA building or renovation. Curry and his partners at Curry Boudreaux Architects are a generalist practice, tackling both residential and commercial projects that serve the public in important ways. This month, Curry is the Houston Design District’s Leaders In Design honoree. His father was in the Air Force, so his family moved a fair amount before settling in Baton Rouge, where he grew up. He came here to study architecture at the University of Houston in the 1970s and stayed. Back in the 1990s, a group approached Curry and CBA about designing what would be Camp for All in Washington County. In time, they added Camp Aranzazu in Rockport, Camp Young Judea in Wimberly, Pine Cove and Camp Cullen in Trinity to their portfolio. They promote historic preservation and “adaptive reuse,” which gives new purpose to old buildings. One example is HEAL High School, a mock hospital being designed inside Nimitz High School, a collaboration of Aldine ISD and Memorial Hermann Health System to prepare students for health care jobs with good wages. “Adaptive reuse projects are ones we look for … and encompass all kinds of things,” said Curry, president of Houston Mod. “You can take a church or a pharmacy and make it into a restaurant or take a commercial building and make residences out of it. Retain the best of what we’ve got and move it forward to the 21st century and new uses.”

IF YOU E AT ONE T HING Hungry’s, Baked Goat Cheese

AT HUNGRY’S ORDER THE BAKED GOAT CHEESE, TOPPED WITH APRICOTS AND RED PEPPER, SERVED WITH A CRISP TOASTED BAGUETTE. Hungry’s recently celebrated five decades of serving Houstonians. Founded in 1975 as Hungry’s International Sandwich Shop in Montrose by Fred Sharifi and his family, the restaurant began with a menu of sandwiches and imported beers. It became one of the first in Houston to offer take-out and delivery during the 1980s oil boom, and over time, the menu expanded to include Mediterranean and Southwestern dishes, plant-based options, and a weekend brunch. Today, Hungry’s has three locations in Rice Village, Memorial, and Tanglewood and is led by Fred Sharifi and the Nowamooz family. “We’re honored to have grown alongside this city and to have become part of so many Houstonians’ memories,” said Sue Nowamooz, co-owner and executive chef of Hungry’s. “Their loyalty inspires us to keep serving for many more.” Nowamooz explains what makes Baked Goat Cheese, one of the most popular appetizers on the menu, so delicious.

THE GOAT CHEESE

At Hungry’s, the goat cheese dish is made with a blend of cheeses, with creamy goat cheese at the center. “We add a few

24

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

complementary cheeses to bring depth and complexity to the flavor,” said Nowamooz. The cheese is seasoned with a mix of spices, including a touch of cayenne pepper. “The cayenne balances the richness and adds a subtle kick,” she said. The dish is served warm in a cast-iron skillet, allowing the cheese to bubble and spread evenly.

THE TOPPINGS

The goat cheese is topped with dried apricots and crushed red pepper. “I love that combination because it strikes the right balance between sweet and spicy,” Nowamooz said. The apricots add natural sweetness and a chewy texture, while the red pepper brings gentle heat that enhances the cheese. “Together, they create a flavor that’s balanced and a little unexpected.”

THE BREAD

The dish comes with toasted baguette slices from a local bread vendor. “The crisp edges and soft interior of the baguette make it the ideal partner for the goat cheese,” Nowamooz said. The bread adds just the right amount of crunch to complete the dish.

Memorial City just got a true taste of New York flair, Texas-style. Katz’s, Houston’s beloved 24/7 restaurant known for its “Never Kloses” motto, has officially opened its fifth location in the Memorial neighborhood. “It's a dream come true to bring our upscale 24-hour dining experience to a fifth Houstonarea location,” said owner Barry Katz. “We strive to be the industry leader in food quality, service, and ambiance, and can't wait to Never Klose our doors again.”

David Dushkin, Director of Business, said the team chose Memorial because of its “thriving economic community” and proximity to the Energy Corridor and Katy. Feedback so far has been “fantastic,” Dushkin added. “We are grateful to the community for the tremendous business over the first few months.” Guests can enjoy comfort favorites like fried pickles, the Klassic Corned Beef Reuben, and a Cheesecake Shake, along with Katz’s signature desserts, handcrafted cocktails, and an all-day breakfast served around the clock. katzsneverkloses.com

A WA R M W I N T E R FA S H I O N G U I D E Alice + Olivia’s Stacey Bendet shares her favorite winter picks and smart layering tips for staying stylish in Houston’s mild weather, balancing rich textures, lightweight fabrics, and effortlessly chic details. ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ALICE + OLIVIA

LIGHT LAYERS, BIG IMPACT

Thomasina Lace Trim Jacket When it comes to dressing for winter in warm climates like Houston, Stacey Bendet, founder, CEO, and Creative Director of Alice + Olivia, says the secret is all about balance. “Even when it’s warm outside, you walk into a restaurant or office and it’s freezing,” she says. Her solution is lightweight layers. Bendet suggests pairing mini jackets or blazers with lace or knit details. “They let you feel covered without overheating,” she says, also noting that these pieces transition easily from day to night.

TOP PICKS FOR THE SEASON

Joanne Coat This season, Bendet is inspired by rich, romantic tones and textures. “It’s Bordeaux season,” she says. Her top picks, all available at the brand’s River Oaks District boutique, include the Joanne Sweater in Bordeaux, lace slip tanks for layering under tailored pieces, and chic trousers to replace denim. “We’ve been in such a denim moment, but it’s the year of the trouser comeback.” Bendet encourages mixing these pieces for a polished, modern feel that’s still easy to wear.

LAYERING WITHOUT THE BULK

Rheba Lace Top In Houston’s mild winters, layering is more about versatility than insulation. “Update your wardrobe with the perfect trouser, a hint of lace, and a lightweight jacket,” Bendet says. Look for jackets in neutral tones or subtle shimmer that can top off jeans or dresses. “It’s about layering for your night out without feeling overly heavy or wintery.” Finish the look with tall boots or a playful bow bag for a touch of fashionable whimsy.

Inside Houston’s Guide to Everyday Wellness KEVIN WRIGHT OWNER MEDI-WEIGHTLOSS HOUSTON MEMORIAL

How can people maintain weight loss? Lasting change is built on consistency, not perfection. Focus on small, sustainable habits, such as balancing lean protein with fiber-rich vegetables at each meal, staying hydrated, and getting quality sleep. Research indicates that adequate hydration and sufficient rest help regulate metabolism and reduce cravings. Track progress beyond the scale, celebrating improvements in energy, mood, and confidence. When you focus on how good you feel, motivation naturally follows.

What are the signs that someone’s metabolism might need professional support? If you’re doing “everything right” – eating well, exercising, getting rest – yet your weight, energy, or mood remain stuck, that’s a signal that it may be time for professional help. Other signs include frequent fatigue, slow recovery after exercise, changes in appetite, or difficulty losing weight even with lifestyle changes.

How can readers view wellness and weight management as self-care?

Weight management is an act of self-respect, not restriction. Instead of focusing on what is being cut, focus on what is gained: energy, confidence, longevity, and freedom from frustration. Self-care means fueling your body with what it needs to thrive, including a balanced diet, regular movement, and accountability. This shift from deprivation to empowerment transforms the experience.

What are some daily habits or wellness routines you recommend? Consistency and simplicity make the most significant difference. I encourage clients to stay hydrated, focus on balanced meals rich in protein and fiber, prioritize daily movement, and incorporate self-care and stress-management techniques, such as journaling, meditation, and adequate rest.

MELISSA CRUZ CEO & FOUNDER ELITE PHYSIQUE BODY SCULPTING

How can clients redefine what it means to feel “well” in their own skin? For many, “wellness” begins as a desire to look better, but it evolves into a journey toward self-trust, body awareness, and confidence. We educate clients on how their bodies function and respond to change, helping them shift from frustration to empowerment. Feeling “well” means understanding that health is not about perfection, but progress. Readers should look for programs designed to reconnect with their bodies, celebrate successes, and adopt the transformation process as a lifestyle, rather than a quick fix.

“

Small, mindful actions can create a ripple effect that transforms how you show up for your health, your goals, and your confidence. - Melissa Cruz

What is one thing readers can do to achieve lasting results? The clients who achieve lasting results all share one thing: commitment to consistency. They show up for themselves even on hard days. They understand that transformation takes time and that their body’s response reflects their daily choices. Those who treat the Metabolic Reset and non-invasive treatments as a lifestyle investment, not a one-time event, are the ones who see permanent changes in energy, confidence, and mindset.

If someone wants to start feeling more confident and energized, what’s one small change they can make today?

Start with hydration and intention. Drink more water and take five minutes each morning to set a positive tone for your day. Whether it’s gratitude, stretching, or simply taking deep breaths, grounding yourself helps reduce stress and improve focus.

TRACY ANKENMAN OWNER & OPERATOR STRETCH ZONE MEMORIAL

How does stretching benefit overall well-being? Stretching is an underutilized component of overall well-being, significantly impacting mobility, range of motion, and blood flow. It aids daily activities, prevents injuries, and shortens recovery time after workouts. A lack of flexibility can lead to decreased range of motion, causing the body to compensate for misalignments, which often results in increased pain, tightness, and fatigue. Consistent stretching helps mitigate these issues, promoting a more fluid and less restricted physical state.

Does stretching alleviate stress? Yes. Stretching promotes mental clarity by encouraging relaxation and focus. Stretch Zone’s patented strapping method enables clients to lie on the table and fully relax, allowing for a deeper stretch that effectively isolates specific muscles. The straps provide stability, allowing the client to relax while receiving the benefits of increased mobility. This focused, relaxed state during a session can be a profound form of self-care and mindfulness.

Does consistent stretching affect sleep quality and posture? Practitioner-assisted stretching enhances blood flow throughout the body, delivering more oxygen and improving overall bodily systems. When the body has fewer flexibility limitations, individuals can experience uninterrupted sleep, waking up less frequently due to discomfort. Good posture becomes more comfortable when the body is in alignment, and decreased pain allows the brain to focus on more consequential information rather than being occupied by physical discomfort.

What are ways that we can incorporate stretching alongside other fitness routines like massage, yoga, or fitness training?

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

Stretching is a vital component of overall well-being and is designed to augment an active lifestyle. The integration of Stretch Zone sessions with other self-care practices, such as massage, yoga, or fitness training, is a matter of personal preference. Some clients prefer stretching before or after a workout, while others choose to schedule sessions on their rest days. Regular stretching helps maintain physical activity and engagement, which is essential for an active lifestyle.

GIA FAUCHEUX LIFESTYLE ORGANIZER & CERTIFIED PRODUCTIVITY COACH ADDRESS THE MESS

How can someone start to regain control if they feel overwhelmed? The first step is to choose one small act of self-care. It could be taking five deep breaths, going for a walk, or even just clearing off your bedside table. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about reconnection with intention. When we’re overwhelmed, we disconnect from ourselves. That tiny moment of intentional care creates a foundation of calm from which everything else can flow. Once you’ve nourished yourself, you have the energy and clarity to tackle what’s truly necessary. From there, we can start focusing on the small things causing overwhelm and build a realistic priority list together.

What is a tool we can use to create digital calm? One of my favorites is what I call the “Digital Sunset,” which involves turning off all devices 30 minutes before bed and spending that time on analog activities, such as reading a physical book, gratitude journaling, or simply sitting quietly and meditating. It’s not just about better sleep; it’s about giving your brain permission to stop processing and start restoring.

What ritual or mindset can we adopt to maintain balance and prevent burnout? I encourage a practice I call “Seasonal Simplifying.” At the start of each season, I ask myself, and my clients, one

powerful question: “What do I need to release to make space for what I want to welcome?” This could mean letting go of physical items that no longer serve you, commitments that drain your energy, unused digital subscriptions, or even thought patterns that keep you stuck. The more you practice letting things go with intention, the easier and more natural it becomes. The key shift is recognizing that we can’t hold on to everything indefinitely. Burnout often stems from maintaining obligations, possessions, and commitments long after they’ve stopped adding value to our lives. When we become intentional about what we keep and what we release, we move from a reactive state of overwhelm to a proactive state of choice. This creates space for what truly matters and helps us build sustainable habits rather than constantly operating in crisis mode.

What design or organization choices have the most significant impact on emotional energy at home? Without question, the bedroom is the most important space in your home for emotional well-being. Your bedroom is where you end every day and begin the next. If you’re walking into chaos like clothes draped over chairs, surfaces covered with random items, and an unmade bed, your nervous system can’t fully relax. You’re visually reminded of unfinished tasks, and that mental load follows you into sleep, greeting you first thing in the morning. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . How can our readers better support their sexual, hormonal, or overall health?

DR. CHRISTI PRAMUDJI DAWE FOUNDER LIFESCULPT™ BY CHRISTIMD

Prioritize consistency over intensity. Steady habits, including eating nourishing foods, engaging in strength training, staying hydrated, getting quality sleep, and practicing intentional sexual wellness, have a far greater impact than occasional extremes. Don’t ignore changes in pelvic comfort, bladder control, or sexual health. These are not “just aging”; they are your body asking for support. Addressing hormonal and pelvic health early can build the foundation for vibrant health and joy well into later decades.

What signs should someone look for that may be a hormonal imbalance, and how can early treatment make a difference? Hormonal imbalance can present subtly at first. Common signs include fatigue or brain fog; weight gain, especially around the midsection; poor sleep; mood swings or anxiety; loss of muscle tone. Women may notice irregular cycles, hot flashes, pelvic discomfort, or vaginal dryness, while men often experience decreased motivation, strength, or sexual health. These symptoms often signal more profound changes, not just in hormones but also in pelvic tissue health. Untreated prolapse, incontinence, or vaginal atrophy can worsen over time. Early intervention with hormone therapy, pelvic support treatments, or urogynecologic procedures can restore comfort, sexual health, and bladder health before issues become more advanced. Addressing hormonal and pelvic health early helps slow cellular aging, improve metabolic function, and preserve quality of life well into later decades.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

The most significant shift is toward preventive longevity medicine. Using diagnostic data and technology to stay ahead of disease instead. This is the future of health. Patients are also leaning into “stacked” treatments, where internal and external therapies work synergistically. Examples include pairing NAD+ IV support with skin tightening, hormone balancing with sexual wellness treatments, or urogynecologic repair with pelvic floor strengthening. These combinations support both healthspan and lifespan. The future of wellness is personalized, preventive, and beautifully integrative. With modern urogynecology pelvic reconstruction, longevity hormonal medicine, and aesthetics, we can help patients age with strength, confidence, and vitality.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered

42

EXP E RT H E LP | WEL L NESS

are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you. 43

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

44

EXP E RT H E LP | WEL L NESS

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them

like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / M E M O R I A L
