Paws, Play and Purpose

Our annual Kids & Pets issue is always one of the most joyful issues we create, and this year is no exception. My team and I love putting together stories that feel full of color, heart, laughter, and a little bit of furry magic.

In this issue, you’ll meet Macy Lima, a gifted event planner who designs the most beautiful and whimsical pet parties. Her work is filled with fun, adventure, gorgeous details, and photography that will absolutely make you smile.

We’ll also introduce you to Louie, a rescue pup turned pet influencer, along with his mama, Kate Stouffer. We sat down with Kate and Louie to learn what life is really like behind the scenes of a four-legged social media star, and I think you’re going to love their story.

You’ll also find kid-approved summer fun, including games, products, and STEM activities that are sure to keep little hands busy and imaginations buzzing.

One of my personal favorites in this issue is our story on the joy of animal-assisted wellness. We explored local businesses where animals play a meaningful role in therapy, mental health, and overall well-being. It is tender, inspiring, and such a beautiful reminder of the healing power of animals.

You may also notice a new name from me. Going forward, you’ll see Suzanne Grace Everheart. It is still me, just with a name that reflects this season of living more intentionally, heart-centered, and forward-facing.

As always, thank you for allowing us to share the people, businesses, stories, and heart of this community with you.

With gratitude,

A PAWSITIVELY

&

PERFECT PARTY

Macy Lima Celebrations & Events provides tips on throwing the perfect pet party.

Macy Lima Celebrations
Events worked with Kelsey Onstott to throw a grand birthday party for dogs Tater and Davis.

Skip the tablecloths and fabric seating. “Even well-trained dogs can have an accident when they’re excited,” says Macy Lima of Macy Lima Celebrations & Events. “At Tater and Davis’ party, we used sleek cocktail tables without linens because they are stylish, functional, and easy to clean.” This helps prevent messes and protects furniture and rentals throughout the event.

Accidents happen, and that’s okay. “There were clearly marked potty areas with waste bags and bins nearby,” Lima explains. “It kept the main space clean and made guests feel more comfortable.” A simple setup like this makes cleanup easier and less stressful.

Let everyone enjoy dessert, pups included. “The party hostess, Kelsey Onstott, opted for a dog-safe cake and pup snow cones made with crushed ice and chicken or beef broth,” says Lima. “The humans had their cake, too, so nobody felt left out, especially the birthday dogs.”

1. DITCH THE LINENS
2. DESIGNATE A POTTY SPOT
3. TREATS FOR HUMANS AND DOGS

4. SPACE TO SNIFF AND PLAY

Choose a venue where pets can roam. “We knew it was important to set up zones for play, to chill out, and food stations, so dogs had room to explore without feeling overwhelmed,” Lima notes. “Just like us, dogs need space when meeting new friends.”

5. CHOOSE FAVORS THEY’LL LOVE

Opt for party favors pets and owners will use. “We gave each pup a squeaky ball, the birthday dogs Davis and Tater’s favorite, and a stylish waste bag holder with extra bags,” Lima says. “We mixed something fun with something functional.”

6. MAKE IT FUN AND MEMORABLE

Add an interactive element guests can take home. “A live caricature artist sketched pups with their owners, and it was a huge hit,” Lima says. “It gave everyone a personal keepsake and made the party even more memorable.”

AN

Influencer UNLEASHED

“I ENJOY CURATING GUIDES THAT SPEAK TO BOTH SIDES OF THE RELATIONSHIP, BECAUSE FOR MANY OF US, OUR DOGS AREN’T JUST PETS, THEY’RE PART OF OUR FAMILIES, OUR ROUTINES, AND, OCCASIONALLY, OUR PERSONAL STYLE.”

Scroll through social media long enough, and you're bound to stumble across a dog with better style, more brand partnerships, and a bigger following than most people. That's the world of pet influencers, where adorable personalities, creative content, and everyday adventures turn into moments worth sharing. For Houston's Kate Stouffer, it all started with a rescue pup named Louie. Today, the lovable three-year-old mixed breed charms thousands of followers while showing that behind every four-legged star is a devoted owner and plenty of treats.

KATE STOUFFER SHARES HOW RESCUE DOG LOUIE BECAME A SOCIAL MEDIA FAVORITE THROUGH AUTHENTIC, EVERYDAY FAMILY ADVENTURES.

TO START FROM THE BEGINNING, HOW DID LOUIE COME INTO YOUR LIFE?

We adopted Louie from K9 Angels Rescue when he was a 12-week-old puppy. At the time, my three boys (and husband)  had been relentlessly campaigning for a dog, and their ages finally felt right for us to take the leap.

K9 Angels Rescue has an amazing Instagram account for people looking for their perfect pup. They post photos of the dogs along with descriptions of their personalities, and you scroll through until one catches your eye. Once you find a potential match, they arrange a meet-and-greet to make sure it’s a good fit for both the family and the dog.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A PET INFLUENCER, AND WHEN DID YOU REALIZE LOUIE COULD BE ONE?

We knew almost immediately that Louie’s personality was something we needed to share with a larger audience than just our household. The dynamic of our family becoming completely obsessed with this dog was entertaining in its own right, and it felt like there were endless moments worth sharing.

I had no idea how many major brands have pet lines, launch pet collaborations, feature pets in their campaigns, or create limited-edition capsule collections for dogs. It felt like this entire world existed right under my nose, and I wanted to share it with other pet owners. That’s really where our content found its niche. The shoppable collages I create are always a reflection of things I’ve genuinely discovered and loved, whether that’s a great product for dogs or something stylish for the human behind the leash.

WHAT GOES INTO CREATING CONTENT FOR LOUIE’S SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS? IS THERE A LOT OF BEHIND-THESCENES PLANNING?

Honestly, most of his content comes from organic moments with our family that I find amusing, or things my boys tell me they want people to see about Louie. The content is usually a reflection of who he already is rather than something we plan too far in advance.

Louie was adopted from K9 Angels Rescue when he was a 12-week-old puppy.
Louie at one of his favorite walking trails in Memorial Park.
Jack Stouffer and Louie.
“LOUIE’S ADVICE FOR BOTH DOGS AND HUMANS WOULD BE, ‘FIND YOUR PEOPLE AND HOLD ON TIGHT.’”

When it comes to shoppable content, I tend to focus on seasonal moments, color trends, or products that feel relevant to what is currently going on in my life. Those types of posts let me showcase products in a way that feels timely and natural, while staying true to Louie’s personality and everyday life.

HAS BEING ON SOCIAL MEDIA OPENED ANY DOORS FOR LOUIE, SUCH AS BRAND PARTNERSHIPS OR TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES?

Yes! It’s been so fun watching his brand grow on social media and having companies reach out. It’s also been fulfilling to raise awareness about rescue dogs and show just how unique and special they can be. @callsign_louie

IF YOU EAT ONE THING

EXECUTIVE CHEF STEPHEN CHIANG BRINGS INSPIRATION TO THE STANDOUT DOUBLE-BONE DUROC PORK CHOP AT HOUSTON’S NEW KIRKWOOD RESTAURANT.

Kirkwood, the debut concept from Mac Haik Restaurant Group, recently opened in the Energy Corridor. The modern clubhouse setting showcases elevated American cuisine and honors Houston businessman Mac Haik.

At the helm in the kitchen is Executive Chef Stephen Chiang, whose culinary background includes Per Se, The NoMad, Del Posto, UB Preserv, and The Blind Goat. While the menu features everything from hamachi crudo to tableside Chateaubriand, one must-order item is the Double-Bone Duroc Pork Chop. kirkwoodrestaurant.com

THE PORK CHOP

The star of the dish is the Duroc pork itself. "Duroc is a heritage breed, and what sets it apart is the marbling," says Executive Chef Stephen Chiang. "It has more intramuscular fat than commodity pork, a deeper color, and a slightly higher pH, so it holds its juice and stays tender even when we cook it hard and fast."

Chiang selected a double-bone cut because "the extra thickness lets us build a real crust on the outside while the center stays rosy, and the bones add flavor as it cooks."

THE GLAZE

The chop is finished with a hot honey and Calabrian chile glaze. "The Calabrian chile is where the heat comes from," says Chiang. "It builds slowly and has more of a fruity warmth than a sharp bite."

THE POTATOES

"Pork and potatoes are a classic for a reason, and I wanted to do it right rather than just check the box," says Chiang. Whipped with herb butter until silky smooth, the purée provides a rich foundation for the rest of the dish.

THE JUS

"The mustard cuts through the richness of the pork, and the caraway gives it an old-world, charcuterie kind of note that works with this cut," says Chiang. The sauce is poured over the chop and potatoes, adding depth and balance, turning an already impressive entrée into a very memorable dish.

Haileigh Nichols, Owner of Zoey’s Friends, LLC

Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist, Certified Animal-Assisted Counseling Team, Certified School Counselor

WHAT IS ZOEY’S MAIN ROLE DURING YOUR THERAPY SESSIONS?

Zoey has several roles during sessions. We work with clients ranging from age five through adulthood. In a clinical sense, Zoey partners with me to help clients reach their therapeutic goals. She enhances the therapeutic relationship and creates moments of comfort, curiosity, connection, and growth, especially for children and teens who may struggle to open up in more traditional settings.

In session, Zoey offers a calm presence during moments of emotional overwhelm, joins clients in grounding and mindfulness exercises, participates in play and therapeutic activities, and supports specific counseling interventions. Sometimes she helps clients regulate big emotions, and other times she simply reminds them that they are not alone.

IF ZOEY COULD TALK, WHAT DO YOU THINK SHE WOULD SAY ABOUT HER “JOB” AS A THERAPY DOG?

If Zoey could talk, she would say, “I love my job!” Every day, she practically leaps for joy when it is time to ride with me to the office. She would probably also tell everyone that snacks are an important part of healing and that belly rubs should be considered a therapeutic intervention.

WHAT DO PEOPLE SEEM TO NEED MOST WHEN THEY SPEND TIME WITH ZOEY, AND HOW DOES SHE SEEM TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO?

More than anything, people need a space where they do not feel judged, pressured, or expected to be anything other than themselves. Animals have a remarkable ability to provide that. They are not concerned with what happened yesterday, what grade you made on a test, or whether you have the right words to express how you feel. They simply meet you where you are, in the here and now.

WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE REACTION YOU’VE SEEN FROM SOMEONE MEETING ZOEY FOR THE FIRST TIME?

What has always been especially powerful to me is seeing children who struggle with emotional regulation become remarkably gentle and intentional with Zoey. Children who may have been described as impulsive, reactive, or frequently dysregulated often slow down, lower their voices, and show tremendous care for Zoey’s comfort and well-being. It serves as a reminder that these strengths are already within them, and sometimes Zoey helps bring them to the surface. zoeysfriends.com

TELL ME ABOUT FAITHFUL PAWS - WHAT IS ITS MISSION?

Faithful Paws Pet Therapy is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing unconditional love to people through the healing power of pets. Since 1997, our certified therapy pet teams have been visiting hospitals, schools, senior living communities, libraries, rehabilitation facilities, and many other organizations throughout the Greater Houston area. Our mission is to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to people facing illness, stress, loneliness, or difficult life circumstances. Last year alone, our volunteers provided more than 15,000 visits.

IF THE FAITHFUL PAWS PET VOLUNTEERS COULD TALK, WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD SAY ABOUT THEIR “JOB” AS THERAPY ANIMALS?

I think they would say, “I get to make people smile all day—and I get lots of pets while doing it!”

Therapy animals don’t care about someone’s age, diagnosis, or circumstances. They simply show up with unconditional acceptance and love. They seem to know exactly when someone needs a playful distraction, a comforting cuddle, or simply a quiet presence.

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT THE VOLUNTEERS AND PETS WHO MAKE UP FAITHFUL PAWS?

I wish people knew how much dedication it takes to become a therapy pet team. These aren’t just friendly pets who happen to visit facilities. Our volunteers invest significant time in training, testing, and learning how to safely and compassionately interact with people of all ages and abilities. Our teams must meet rigorous standards and are carefully prepared for the unique environments they serve.

I also wish people knew that our volunteers receive just as much as they give. They witness incredible moments of human connection: a patient smiling for the first time in days, a child reading confidently to a dog, or a senior reminiscing about beloved pets from long ago. Those moments stay with our volunteers forever.

WHAT SURPRISES PEOPLE MOST ABOUT THERAPY DOGS AND THE IMPACT THEY CAN HAVE ON SOMEONE’S DAY?

People are often amazed at how quickly a therapy dog can transform a room’s atmosphere. We’ve seen anxious children relax enough to read aloud, stressed healthcare workers pause to smile during difficult shifts, and patients who were withdrawn suddenly begin talking and engaging with others. faithfulpawshouston.org

Combining gentle movement, fresh air, and animal interaction, the experience can help reduce stress, boost mood, and make exercise feel more approachable. The goats’ presence often encourages laughter and mindfulness, creating a fun atmosphere for a great workout.

Founded by Paul and Kara and their four children after relocating to Anderson in 2023, LTD Farms was created from a shared passion for animals, the outdoors, and active

living. Kara, a retired certified Pilates instructor, has been teaching goat yoga for more than five years. LTD Farms offers goat yoga classes, and this summer, they have partnered with The Woodlands Resort to bring back one of its most popular wellness experiences. On Saturday, August 1, participants can enjoy a guided outdoor yoga session surrounded by friendly goats, followed by dedicated time to interact with the animals. Puppies & Yoga Houston

If traditional yoga feels a little too serious, puppy yoga might be the wellness trend worth trying. Located in River Oaks, Puppies & Yoga combines a beginner-friendly yoga session with plenty of tail wags, puppy kisses, and cuddle breaks. The 75-minute experience includes 45 minutes of guided yoga, followed by 30 minutes of playing with and snuggling adorable puppies. The pups, typically between

8 and 12 weeks old, roam freely throughout the class, often turning a simple stretch into a fun or cuddly moment. Beyond the cuteness factor, puppy yoga offers real benefits, helping participants reduce stress, boost their mood, and stay present in the moment. The playful energy of the puppies makes it easy to forget daily worries while encouraging movement in a relaxed, pressure-free setting. puppies-yoga.com

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD IS A FUN DESSERT FOR CHILDREN TO MAKE AND SHARE!

AROUND

CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD

There is little more satisfying to your sweet tooth than ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. Here is an easy and fun way to make this tearable, shareable treat!

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup melted butter

• 1/3 cup granulated sugar

• 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

• 3 (12 oz.) cans of buttermilk biscuits

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Generously coat the inside of a bundt pan with cooking spray or butter.

Melt the butter in a pot or bowl. Mix the sugars and cinnamon in a separate bowl.

Open one can of biscuits, separate, and cut each into four sections. Next, roll each quarter into a ball and then put each one into the sugar mixture to coat. Place the balls in the bundt pan in a single layer and drizzle a little melted butter evenly over the top. Repeat with the other two cans of biscuits.

Sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture over the top and bake for 30-35 minutes.

Be sure to let cool for a minute or two before turning the bread onto a plate and carefully removing the pan. If you leave the monkey bread in the pan much longer, it will stick and be hard to remove.

I sometimes make icing, a few tablespoons of milk, to about 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with a splash of vanilla.

Drizzle over the top while warm and enjoy!
