Their legacy lives on in the love and warmth they bestowed upon us, forever etched in the tapestry of our hearts.
Being a mom is personally the very best gift I have ever received. As I write this letter, I am anticipating a very quick 36-hour trip from my daughter Savannah, who is a 26-year-old aspiring actress living her best life in Los Angeles. She inspires me every day with her free spirit and zest for international travel. Rumor has it that I just might be an inspiration to her as well. How special is that?
As you flip through the pages of this stunning issue, please take a moment to notice the special Woman-Owned Local Business seal present on so many of the ads. I believe it is so important to support our women who own local businesses and I hope you will make a special effort to support their businesses alongside me.
Wishing you all a Mother's Day filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments!

by Felipe Riccio and his talented team, March puts forth an exquisite menu of rich Mediterranean flavors.
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZACH HORST
MARCH has unveiled its latest culinary creation with the introduction of the Països Catalans menu, a tribute to the rich and diverse Mediterranean flavors of the Catalan-speaking regions. Led by Felipe Riccio, chef/partner of Goodnight Hospitality, and his talented team, the latest menu offers a tantalizing journey through the gastronomic treasures of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Alicante, Castelló, Roussillon, Andorra, and Alghero in Sardinia, Italy.

"Creating an entire menu this way presents its challenges, but it's a challenge we wholeheartedly embrace and always with an eagerness to learn," says Riccio. "With each exploration, we delve deeper into the tapestry of flavors, techniques, and stories that define each region's cuisine and, therefore, the Mediterranean as a whole. We ensure that every dish we create is delicious and a celebration of the region.”
The essence of La Cucina Catalana, deeply rooted in its historical influences from Greek, Roman, and Arab traditions, is prominently featured in this menu iteration. One of the distinguishing characteristics of Catalan cuisine is its fusion of land and sea elements, as well as the harmonious blend of sweet and savory flavors, known respectively as 'mar i muntanya' and 'dolç i salat'. Traditional Catalan sauces like aioli, romesco, and sofrito add depth and authenticity to the dishes.

Among the standout offerings in the 6- and 9-course tasting menus are the Rèmol de Riu, a delightful cured fluke crudo paired with butternut squash sofrito and pumpkin seed crumble; the aromatic Paella Valenciana showcasing lamb chorizo and saffron socarrat tuile; the innovative Fricandó featuring apolonia-spiced wagyu short rib with chestnut puree and black truffle; and the indulgent Ànec Confita, a duck presse elevated with pickled grapes and candied lavender almond.
Complementing these exquisite dishes is a sophisticated beverage program that celebrates the natural bounty and drinking culture of the Països Catalans. Signature cocktails like Fent el Vermut!, A Lucid Poet, Drop the &, and 3 Centuries pay homage to traditional Catalonian libations while offering a modern twist with unique ingredients and flavors.
Master Sommelier Rodil and her team have curated wine pairings that accentuate the menu. They focus on wines from the iconic Penedès wine region, renowned for its exceptional quality and diversity.
"The response to this menu has been amazing. We are constantly learning how to better interpret and translate our research into delicious food," says Riccio. "We have so many regulars that have come for most, if not all, of the menus, and it is so fulfilling to talk to them and hear what they enjoy from each iteration. There are obvious favorites, and this menu is shaping up to be one of those for sure." marchrestaurant.com

Branches Out Courtney Hill Fertitta

Courtney Hill Fertitta is known for her elegant and timeless touch in residential interior design but lately, she’s found a new outlet for her creativity at popular Houston restaurants.
She’s been busy adding color and rich pattern to the original Carraba’s, which opened nearly 40 years ago, and to two of the city’s newer restaurants, Bludorn and Navy Blue, a pair launched by chef-restaurateur Aaron Bludorn and his wife, Victoria. Her newest accomplishment is being named a Leader in Design by the Houston Design District.
“I love growing and learning, so that has been amazing for us. And everything we’ve learned on the restaurant side has helped us with the residential side. We’re able to make decisions so much faster now,” Courtney said of her Courtney Hill Interiors design firm.
Courtney and her husband, Jason Fertitta, CEO at the Americana Partners wealth management firm, also are partners in Brenham-based Truth Barbecue’s Houston outpost. The couple married in 2001, and now are the parents of three teenagers.
Courtney and her team have designed beautiful homes all over the Houston area, and some in other parts of the country, too.
Her classic style embraces organic materials such as natural stone, but sees virtue in durable manmade materials, too. Many homes need to be kid and petfriendly, and she embraces tech-driven materials that let beautiful rugs and fabrics stand up to the rigors of daily life.
“We’ve done some amazing residential projects, and I was itching to do something a little different. The restaurants were a way to add to my portfolio. Who knows, maybe we’ll do some furniture design or fabric lines or boutique hotels in the future.”

MAKEOVER MAGIC

Steckler says preventive maintenance is critical to prolonging the life of a luxury handbag or leather goods. She recommends the following:
REFECI, A LUXURY REPAIR AND RESTORATION COMPANY, OFFERS A SECOND CHANCE FOR HIGH-END GOODS.
Refeci owner Luisa Steckler came into the highend fashion repair and restoration business out of necessity. As a collector of luxury fashion herself, she realized there needed to be a competent cleaning and restoration business in Houston that followed rigorous European standards. Her father, a businessman, suggested that she start one herself, and two years later, Refeci is the go-to repair and restoration service company in Houston.
Steckler traveled to Asia and Europe to learn from master leather artisans and has a team of support staff, restoration technicians, and restoration specialists who work with her. “By providing a very structured training process, we ensure that our staff can provide the level of detail and expertise required to make any damage or normal wear and tear a problem of the past,” says Steckler. “We also import some of the best products designed for luxury fashion; this facilitates the cleaning and repair process due to the quality of such products.”
Refeci’s goal is to help every person lengthen the life of their luxury fashion item. The company works with bags, shoes, clothing, luggage, and other accessories and has restored Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Prada, and more.
1. Keep items in a cotton dust bag to protect them from sunlight, dust, and moisture.
2. Stuff handbags to help maintain their shape.
3. Clean items with products specially designed for the material the item is made of.
4. Store the luxury item properly and use a protective membrane that shields the item against stains.

LEGENDARY BEAUTY

Karina Llergo, a Bayou City Arts Festival
Featured Artist, is widely known for depicting the human body in motion.

For more than 50 years, art enthusiasts from all over Texas have flocked to Houston’s biannual Bayou City Art Festival, a fine art festival produced by The Art Colony Association, Inc. Held in October and March of each year, each festival highlights a Featured Artist, including this season’s Chicago-based artist Karina Llergo.

Llergo was born and raised in Mexico City, where she received her bachelor’s degree in graphic design and advanced degrees in multimedia, animation, and abstract art. She studied with famed Mexican artist Roberto Cortazar and portraitist Enrique Estrada, who both saw her talent and strongly encouraged her to continue her artistic journey.
While keeping art at the forefront of her mind and heart, Llergo enjoyed a highly successful corporate career as art director for Mexico City’s top newspaper, Reforma , and at the illustrious advertising agency McCann Erickson. Among the many campaigns she helped create, some of her most memorable were for clients such as Coca-Cola, Revlon, and Kimberly-Clark.
Throughout her professional life, Llergo painted and continued to work on developing her unique style. She admits that the most significant influence on her artwork has been her lifelong commitment to being involved in sports and dance. Llergo is a dancer, competitive swimmer, and avid skydiver. She has also participated in extreme sports and found a passion for yoga later in life. Each of these activities inspired her to depict the human body in motion. Over the years, Llergo found a way to translate her observations and creative imagination into thought-provoking paintings.
When Lergo was relocated to Chicago with her husband and four children, she made the bold decision to transition to art full-time. She had always dreamed of working as an artist, and the move allowed her to dedicate herself to the world of art.
“I have always maintained a passion for the human form, and figurative painting has been my primary focus since childhood,” says the artist. “Witnessing the figures take shape as I apply layers of paint never fails to amaze me.”
Llergo primarily uses oil paints and has recently incorporated inks in her underpaintings and oil glazings to add color and create forms. The artist also applies acrylic impasto with pallet knives and molds it with her fingers to create depth and a 3D effect on specific areas of her paintings. To create a luminous effect in her artwork, she uses a 24K gold gilding technique.
“My goal is for people to not only view my art and get a sense of its vitality but also to be moved to generate positivity in their own lives.”
Since 2007, Llergo’s work has received high praise and has been showcased in exhibitions and festivals nationwide. Among her many accolades, Llergo has received numerous Outstanding Achievement and Best In Show awards at distinguished art shows throughout the United States.
According to Llergo, the Bayou City Arts Festival is one of her favorite shows because it was one of the first festivals she participated in. The Texassized hospitality has kept her coming back for years, and being chosen as the featured artist for the 2024 Spring Festival “is a moment of celebration that inspires me to keep pushing boundaries.”
For those who didn’t get to see Llergo’s art in person at the last Bayou City Arts Festival, it is available online at karinallergoart.com.

“I HAVE ALWAYS MAINTAINED A PASSION FOR THE HUMAN FORM, AND FIGURATIVE PAINTING HAS BEEN MY PRIMARY FOCUS SINCE CHILDHOOD. WITNESSING THE FIGURES TAKE SHAPE AS I APPLY LAYERS OF PAINT NEVER FAILS TO AMAZE ME.”

AVANT-ART GALLERY OWNERS ABIGAIL HENNINGSEN HALEY AND ALLY ONDARZA SHARE TIPS ON NAVIGATING THE ART BUYING PROCESS.
Collective Vision

Avant-Art Gallery opened over the summer on Gallery Row by friends and Houston natives Abigail Henningsen Haley and Ally Ondarza. With years of work in the art world and impressive backgrounds in some of the city's leading art galleries under their belts, the duo decided to step out on their own to open Avant-Art Gallery.
With clientele from all over the city, the gallery is well-equipped to work with homeowners and designers to find the perfect piece to really bring a home to life.
While navigating the world of art buying can be an exciting experience, it can also be overwhelming for a first-time buyer or a seasoned collector. With that in mind, we asked Abigail and Ally for valuable tips to guide buyers through the decision-making process and ensure a confident and enjoyable art-buying journey.
IMMERSE YOURSELF
Begin by exposing yourself to various artworks. Visit galleries, attend art fairs, and immerse yourself in the contemporary art landscape. Approach this exploration casually, without the pressure of making an immediate purchase. The more you expose yourself to diverse works, the more confident you'll identify what resonates with you.

Christine Tonolini, "Wherever you are"
STRATEGIC SELECTION
Treat art acquisition as a strategic process, like furnishing your home or curating your wine collection. Identify key areas in your home—such as the main walls in your dining room, living room, and primary bedroom—that hold the most importance. Focusing on these high-traffic areas allows for a gradual and purposeful accumulation of art, ensuring a curated rather than rushed look.
EMBRACE THE ENJOYMENT
Remember that buying art is a luxury, and the process should be enjoyable. Opt for high-quality artwork that you genuinely love and complements the space. Investing in a piece you adore is far more satisfying than settling for something you might replace in a few years.
FIND A GALLERIST YOU TRUST
You should never feel like you are being pressured to buy a piece you are unsure about. Our goal as gallery owners is to find the right piece for you. At Avant-Art, we work by the philosophy that art should enhance your space and evoke a genuine connection. You should feel confident, knowing that each piece you choose contributes to the unique story of your space. avant-artgallery.com

HERE comes THE SUN
DR.STEPHEN MAHONEY FROM WEST HOUSTON DERMATOLOGY SHARES
TIPS ON HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER.
Swimsuits and sun-kissed skin are synonymous with summer. And because we live in Texas, where triple-digit temperatures are on the horizon, summer also means amping up your skincare routine. From finding the best sunscreen to learning about which products help to protect from sun damage, we spoke with a Houston-area skin care expert to round up advice and product recommendations to get the most out of this summer season.
Warmer temperatures mean more time outdoors and much more sun exposure. According to Dr. Stephen Mahoney, board-certified dermatologist at West Houston Dermatology, one of the most common questions asked at his practice is, “How do I keep my skin from aging prematurely?”
To answer that question, Dr. Mahoney and his team are equipped with the latest technology, products, and practices to guide their patients on a journey to healthier and more beautiful skin. His advice for achieving a summer glow without damaging skin involves four easy steps.

SUNSCREEN
Daily photoprotection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a necessity to avoid wrinkling, age spots, pigmentation, and skin cancers. Houston has a lot of sunshine, averaging 2633 hours per year or 7.5 hours daily. Dr. Mahoney advises his patients to use broad-spectrum sunscreens blocking UVA and UVB that have an SPF of 30 or higher, as well as physical UV blockers (Zinc Oxide/ Titanium Dioxide), to provide complete coverage of visible, UVA/UVB, and infrared radiations.
West

VITAMIN A ANTIOXIDANT PRODUCTS DAILY SKIN CARE
According to Dr. Mahoney, Vitamin A products in the form of Tretinoin or Retinol are the optimal night creams. Vitamin A increases the production of dermal collagen and improves the smoothness, thickness, and color of epidermal skin. However, Vitamin A can be a photosensitizer and very drying, so these products are best used at night.
To reduce UV radiation’s damaging effects, which cause collagen breakdown, wrinkling, age spots, and skin cancers, the team at West Houston Dermatology recommends incorporating antioxidant products, including Vitamin C or Vitamin E, into a morning skincare routine.
Lastly, regular skin care is essential; just like brushing your teeth, it needs to be a daily process to ensure ideal results. Reversing prior skin damage can be accomplished by periodically adding chemical peels, microneedling, and laser rejuvenation treatments available at West Houston Dermatology.
“AT WEST HOUSTON DERMATOLOGY LASER AND SKIN CARE CENTER, WE ARE EQUIPPED TO GUIDE YOU ON THE JOURNEY TO HEALTHIER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL SKIN.”

WELLNESS
With over 1.6 million Americans living with or in remission from blood cancer, a cure needs to be found.
Warrior

Alicia Nicholas, interior designer of Alicia Nicholas Design, has been nominated as a 2024 Visionaries of the Year Candidate to help raise funds for the prestigious Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLC). Her goal is to raise $150,000 to help find a cure for blood cancer and to also give support to patients and families faced with this tragedy. Even the smallest donations can help further technological advances in conquering blood cancer.
What makes this nomination so special to Alicia is her story and first-hand experience with leukemia. Thirty-two years ago, Alicia’s aunt Diane was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia.
“Undergoing an experimental treatment that required frequent hospital stays, Diane battled leukemia for over two years. Now, nearing age sixty-seven, she still tends to her garden, entertains, takes care of her two grandchildren, and is as healthy as ever. Her courage and strength paved the way for others who would suffer the same fate.”
At the time of Alicia’s aunt’s battle with leukemia, only ten percent of patients survived more than a few months. This makes her story even more inspiring and incredible for those battling blood cancer.
Incredibly, through generous donations and fundraisers like Alicia’s, huge technological advances and intensive research breakthroughs have raised the number from ten percent to ninety percent of those suffering from leukemia to achieve remission and continue to survive decades longer just like Alicia’s aunt Diane.
While these technological advances are still pushing ahead, there are still so many stories of blood cancer that end in tragedy and loss. Because of this, Alicia needs your help raising funds.
Several events are finalized and planned for you to join, and more are still in the works! To donate, visit Alicia’s page, https://pages.lls.org/ voy/txg/houston24/anicholas.
