Curiosity and Wonder
I am delighted to present to you our highly anticipated Kids and Pets Issue. This special edition of Memorial Lifestyle is dedicated to celebrating the special bonds we have with our babies – both human and furry! There truly is something for everyone in these pages.
In our special feature, Change Makers , we are delighted to showcase some very special resources in the community, all of which exist to offer creative guidance, foster a positive learning environment, promote emotional well-being, and encourage the development of essential life skills in children through cutting-edge techniques and imaginative play. From home tutoring to occupational therapy, dyslexia, and autism support, to equine therapy, we hope these ‘hidden gems’ will touch your heart and connect you with the amazing pioneers behind these local businesses.
Pets hold a unique place in our homes and hearts. They offer unconditional love, comfort in times of need, and endless moments of joy and laughter. For our animal lovers, this issue highlights the best of the best in canine training, pet-friendly patio dining, supporting local for everyday needs and even some over-the-top finds that your doggo will love!
For our cover feature, All Fired Up, we had the best time visiting with Chase Mora, a local athlete from the Tomball area who is making waves in college baseball. If you haven’t heard of him, that is about to change! Our interview will undoubtedly inspire you and offer a tiny glimpse into what the future holds for this young man.
Finally, we can’t close this issue without food and travel – our favorites! We invite you to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Houston Restaurant Weeks with us – get ready to explore the best bites in town this month for a wonderful cause. And come along with fresh eyes on our trip to Green Bay, a beautiful haven you will want to add to your bucket list.
Whew! We packed this fun issue to the brim. My hope is that our stories inside this special edition warm your heart and remind you to cherish the deep connection we share with all our precious babies. Their curiosity and wonder at the world are such a special gift.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
ARTICLE BY MEMORIAL LIFESTYLE STAFF
Pet Supplies Plus Memorial offers a carefully curated selection of products and services for its customers.
Matt Barrett and his brother Brian had always shared a lifelong dream of starting a business together. After much exploration, they found their calling in the pet supply industry, blending their passion for entrepreneurship with their love for pets. In an open and candid conversation, Matt sheds light on their motivations, the pet supply industry, and future plans.
The Barrett brothers opened the Pet Supplies Plus Memorial location in 2020. They chose the pet supplies industry because of its remarkable growth potential and resilience, even in the face of uncertain times. However, what truly captivated him was the unique culture surrounding pet ownership. The unwavering joy and care people have for their furry companions resonated deeply with them. With this inspiration in mind, they set out to create a work environment that is fun and supportive and treats employees as valued team members, customers as neighbors, and managers as leaders. Their commitment extends far beyond the walls of their stores, as they actively engage in community initiatives and lend their support to local programs, rescues, and adoption events.
Running a family business brings rewards, and Brian is proud to build something meaningful alongside his brother. It has become a legacy that their families and children can be proud of. With shared goals and a unified vision, their strong foundation allows them to positively impact their community. While acknowledging that differing opinions may arise, they remain focused on their common objective—the business's success. They have fostered a family-like atmosphere that extends into their respective roles and provides unwavering support to their dedicated teams.
When discussing the future, Brian emphasizes their intention to concentrate on their existing stores and refine their operations. Their growth trajectory has been steady, and they have decided to break from opening new stores in the upcoming year. Instead, they are eager to enhance the customer experience and create exceptional shopping environments. While they have no plans to venture into other franchises, they remain open to opportunities that align with their aspirations, always ready to embrace new possibilities. petsuppliesplus.com

Foundations Pediatric Therapy
At Foundations Pediatric Therapy, building strong and trusting relationships with the child and their family is a fundamental principle, whether through Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, or Feeding Therapy services.
Therapists at Foundations Pediatric Therapy understand that progress is not a linear path but rather a complex interplay of various factors. Thus they utilize the Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship-Based (DIR®)/ Floortime™ Model with every child that comes through the door, no matter their diagnosis or presenting problem. They take the time to understand what a child loves and what excites them, which enables therapy to become a more meaningful and motivating experience. Every child attending Foundations Pediatric Therapy wants to be there and has fun while doing “the work” to improve functioning at home, school, and in social environments.
Therapy plans are tailored to the specific needs of each child and family as Foundations
Pediatric Therapy integrates a wide variety of evidence-based therapy techniques. Their in-depth knowledge of sensory processing, gross and fine motor skills, expressive and receptive communication, social-emotional skills, and more enables them to help determine where holes lie in each child’s development. Rather than placing a bandaid on problem areas or challenging behavior, they determine the underlying deficits and address them directly, leading to lasting and generalizing progress for your child.
Foundations Pediatric Therapy also heavily emphasizes parent education and collaboration with teachers, caregivers, and other professionals on a child’s team.
Foundations Pediatric Therapy provides Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Therapy (ST), and Feeding Therapy services for ages 0 to 18 and accepts older individuals on a case-by-case basis. foundationspediatrictherapy.com
“Building strong therapeutic relationships can cultivate lasting and meaningful change in our children’s emotional, social, physical, and mental development.”

Dyslexia School of Houston
Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 people who will be diagnosed with the neurobiological disorder. At the Dyslexia School of Houston (DSH), children receive the proper treatment needed to read and write. Since opening in 2020, DSH has served hundreds of families in the community lacking the customized support to ensure their children succeed beyond the classroom.
For founder and CEO Tammy Spencer, turning children with learning disabilities into spellers with superpowers, like confidence and character, results from her passion-filled efforts.
Spencer has joined forces with Scottish Rite for Children to provide the Take Flight, A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia curriculum in Houston and the surrounding areas. Scottish Rite is one of the nation’s leading pediatric orthopedic centers. A wide range of orthopedic conditions are treated, as well as certain arthritic, neurological, and learning disorders, such as dyslexia.
When Spencer founded DSH, she desired to bring quality curriculum, treatment, and learning to all children with dyslexia, regardless of their family’s ability to afford private therapy. As a public school educator for 27 years, she saw firsthand how students with learning disabilities statistically become entrepreneurs or incarcerated. The most significant catalyst in preventing the latter is the therapy and support DSH provides. “I want to be the solution,” Spencer says.
Thus, the 501c3 organization, The Code Academy, was founded in direct alliance with DSH to improve literacy by providing scholarships to children with dyslexia.
The Code Academy will benefit from the upcoming September 9th gala, Cirque Dy Slexia, hosted by DSH at The Health Museum and sponsored by Scottish Rite, among many other literacy and local supporters.
As DSH expands its scope across Houston in collaboration with Scottish Rite, they look forward to serving the community together.
Development for DSH’s Certified Academic Language Therapist training center and lab school for children began earlier this year. dyslexiahouston.org
“At Dyslexia School of Houston, we recognize dyslexia as both a challenge and an opportunity. We’re here to help students tap into their talent and build confidence in their reading ability.”

Apara Autism Centers
Apara was founded by parents of children on the autism spectrum, and their goal is to help children living with autism live to their fullest potential while giving parents and caregivers the help and information they need to make the right decisions for their child’s future.
Apara uses Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy (ABA), an evidence-based treatment for individuals diagnosed with autism and related disorders. ABA therapy and its principles are derived from years of scientific research and have been endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control since 1999. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and the National Institute of Mental Health have also listed BA as the Standard of Care for individuals with autism.
ABA therapy is based on the principles of learning. When implemented at an individualized level, the treatment can decrease problem behaviors while increasing appropriate and wanted behaviors, such as communication and daily living skills. Apara’s Board Certified Behavior Analysts create individualized ABA treatment plans for each client based on initial and ongoing assessments.
With locations throughout the greater Houston area, Apara Autism Centers offers ABA therapy for children ages 18 months and up. Apara provides social skills, life skills, feeding programs, and parent training. Their team collaborates with the client’s speech and occupational therapy providers to ensure the best possible outcome. Apara Autism Centers accepts most insurance plans. aparaautism.com

Inspiration Ranch
Located on 40 sprawling acres in Magnolia, Inspiration Ranch uses equine-assisted therapy to help children, youth, and adults overcome physical, emotional, and social disabilities. The therapeutic riding program provides hope and encouragement while strengthening core muscles and improving mobility and communication skills.
Inspiration Ranch differs from similar programs because of its highly trained and skilled horses and experienced, compassionate staff. The keenly trained horses instinctively react to nonverbal cues, with a natural gift of analyzing a situation to encourage safe and healthy interaction no matter the obstacles to overcome. Inspiration Ranch team members are breaking barriers and shattering stigmas, allowing clients to reach their goals through equine therapy in a loving, inclusive Christian environment.
Since its opening in 2010, Inspiration Ranch has grown from 20 clients a week to serving over 115 therapeutic riding clients weekly and over 50 mental health clients annually. Committed to never turning away anyone due to financial reasons, Inspiration Ranch offers scholarships thanks to their partnering supporters. The volunteers at Inspiration Ranch play a vital role in making equine therapy programs available to the community; from side-walking during therapeutic sessions to committee members and ranch chores–every volunteer plays a valuable part in the mission of Inspiration Ranch. With an average of at least 175 volunteers each week serving at Inspiration Ranch, the volunteers often say they are the ones who are blessed to be there.
Safety is taken very seriously at Inspiration Ranch, with no compromise as a Premier Accredited Center through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International. Inspiration Ranch strives to create a joyful, peaceful environment while maintaining harmony with the land, horses, and one another, honoring God in every encounter and action. inspirationranch.org

CHEERS TO 20 YEARS
CELEBRATING HOUSTON RESTAURANT
Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW), Houston's highly anticipated foodie event, is set to celebrate its 20th year from August 1st to September 4th, raising crucial funds for the Houston Food Bank. This 35-day extravaganza will feature an impressive roster of the city's most popular restaurants, offering specially priced prix fixe menus for brunch, lunch, and dinner, available for both dine-in and take-out options. Participants can expect an extensive selection of two to four-course meals, with restaurants from various neighborhoods joining the culinary celebration.
Since its inception in 2003 by Cleverley Stone, the renowned "Diva of Dining," HRW has become a beacon of support for the local restaurant industry during the historically slow month of August. Stone's vision to give back to the community and assist struggling restaurants has resulted in HRW becoming the largest event of its kind in the United States. Over the past two decades, HRW has raised
an impressive $18.8 million, equivalent to 56.4 million meals provided to those facing food insecurity in the region.
This milestone year of HRW will be commemorated with a new logo, symbolizing the event's commitment to making a positive impact. Brian Greene, president and CEO of the Houston Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support of the Cleverley Stone Foundation, stating, "We look forward to being a part of this event for the next 20 years."
Following Cleverley Stone's passing in 2020, her daughter Katie Stone has taken on the responsibility of carrying forward her mother's legacy. Establishing The Cleverley Stone Foundation, Katie ensures the continuity of HRW while supporting Houstonians in need. Speaking to her mother’s legacy, she said, "HRW became my mother's sole purpose. I know that she would be so happy that it continues to thrive." houstonrestaurantweeks.com

GREEN BAY
Nestled in the heart of Green Bay, a charming city in northeastern Wisconsin, lies a haven of natural beauty, cultural delights, and a deep-rooted passion for football. It is hard to think about Green Bay without thinking of green and gold, but there is so much more to the city than the largest publicly owned franchise in the country. Green Bay is a quick trip from Houston and a fantastic reprieve from Texas’ summer heat. The ideal time to visit is summer through fall, when lucky visitors will experience fall colors and crisp autumn air.
THINGS TO DO
Green Bay Botanical Garden invites visitors to explore its lush landscape, where indigenous and exotic plants create a tapestry of colors and scents. Adjacent to the garden, the Green Bay Automobile Gallery showcases a collection of vintage cars, classic automobiles, and modern vehicles, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich automotive heritage.
Visitors can also take a fun boat ride along the Fox River with the Foxy Paddler. Drifting downstream, they can enjoy scenic landscapes and a fun ride with snacks and beverages.
No visit to Green Bay is complete without a tour of Lambeau Field, the iconic stadium and home of the beloved Green Bay Packers. Stepping onto the historic grounds, visitors can feel the weight of the team’s illustrious history and immerse themselves in the spirit of football. The stadium’s Hall of Fame showcases the team’s triumphs, inviting visitors to become part of the Packers’ legacy.
To complete their visit, travelers can experience the vibrant energy of Titletown, a newly built district that celebrates the Packers and the city’s sense of community. Sports bars and restaurants create a spirited atmosphere, where fans gather to cheer on their team with outdoor activities in the ample green space.

BAY BEACH AMUSEMENT PARK
Situated on the east bank of the Foxy River, Bay Beach Amusement Park is the ninth-oldest amusement park in the country. It is also one of the country’s only municipally owned amusement parks, aiming to make fun accessible to everyone. There is no entrance fee, free parking, and ride tickets are only a quarter. Bay Beach Amusement Park is open from May through September and is so popular that it ushers in an astonishing three million visitors annually through its gates. The park ranks second only to the Green Bay Packers in terms of annual visitors.
The amusement park boasts 22 rides, with the Zippin Pippin being the most popular. This historic wooden roller coaster was also Elvis Presley’s favorite ride at Libertyland in Tennessee. It is rumored that he closed down the amusement park to entertain guests and rode the Zippin Pippin for hours without stopping.

Visitors can’t leave Wisconsin without trying the official state pastry, the kringle, which came from Danish settlers in the mid-19th century. For over two decades, Uncle Mike’s has been making authentic Danish Kringle, with 32 layers of flaky, buttery dough filled with various fruits and nuts. 888 Cheese & Co. is also a must-try for locally sourced ingredients and delicious gourmet grilled cheese.
EAT DRINK
So many breweries and so little time, but it is worth going on a brewery crawl while visiting Green Bay. Zambaldi Beer is a family-friendly brewery that gives tours, while Stillmank Brewing Co. , which started as a home brewer, is now creating locally sourced craft brews. The Wisco Disco is their most popular - who can resist with such a great name? Noble Roots , where everything is brewed on-site, is also worth a stop.
STAY

Pucci Café & Pet Boutique, a unique and luxurious concept, debuted at LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch in Katy just last year. The vision for this one-of-a-kind establishment had been brewing in the minds of owners Maria and Bobby Davidson for several years, and they spared no effort in creating an exceptional place for their customers.

The inspiration behind Pucci Café came to the Davidsons during their frequent European trips, where it is common to see dogs accompanying their owners on street patios. However, they aimed to take this concept to new heights, transforming it into a sophisticated and upscale experience. Thus, Pucci was born. It is a destination for luxurious dog goods and a space where people can gather with their furry companions on a beautiful back

The expansive 2,500-square-foot, multi-level dog-friendly patio at Pucci is a haven for canines. It features a fenced-in play area where patrons can leave their furry friends under the attentive supervision of a dedicated staff member while they explore the boutique inside.
Pucci Café itself offers an impressive array of high-quality offerings. From coffee and tea to specialty beers, wine, pastries, and charcuterie boards, there is something to satisfy every palate. Customers can enjoy a delightful snack while their fourlegged companions indulge in tasty treats from the upscale gourmet dog bakery. Pucci is a sophisticated space to enjoy happy hours, morning meetings, or take a break during neighborhood walks.
The interiors of Pucci Café, designed by the Houston-based Gin Design Group, exude a European charm. With curvaceous millwork, accent lighting that creates a warm ambiance, and cascading greenery, the atmosphere is inviting and elegant. Plush textiles in rich jewel tones with houndstooth accents add
a layer of softness, perfectly contrasting the cool gray concrete plaster and cherry red mosaic tiles.
Maria Davidson, the co-founder of Pucci Café, describes it as a destination where both dogs and their owners can indulge in pampering and relish delicious beverages while enjoying the picturesque lake view. She emphasizes that Pucci offers a complete package of luxury, an inviting atmosphere, and fun.
In addition to the café, Pucci showcases a wide range of designer canine accessories imported from various countries worldwide, including an exclusive collection of dog spa products free from genetically modified organisms and harsh chemicals. BLUE LINE K9 DOG TRAINING EXPERTS EXPLAIN COMMON MISTAKES PET OWNERS MAKE AND HOW TO FIX THEM.
ARTICLE BY MEMORIAL LIFESTYLE STAFF
Blue Line K9 Dog Training was recently named The World's Greatest Dog Training Company by the Bloomberg Network. Blue Line K9 is a mobile dog training company building unbreakable bonds between owners and their dogs by making dog training fun and easy, no matter the breed, size, or problem.
Blue Line K-9 was founded in 2007 by Veteran, CEO, and Master Dog Trainer Michael J. Soler. Houston locals Donnovan Angevine and Jorge Porras brought Blue Line K-9 from Maryland to Texas this year and serve the Katy, Cypress, Sugarland, and West Houston areas.
Donnavan and Jorge are passionate about showing Houstonians a better way to train their dogs, so we sat down with them to learn more about the top three common mistakes pet owners make and how to fix them.
TEACHING TRICKS VS. OBEDIENCE
Many owners sign up for group training classes that teach their dogs things like "sit down,"
These classes aren't teaching dogs to become obedient; they're just teaching simple tricks. While commands like those above are part of obedience training, they are not the end goal. Obedience is the immediate reaction to a command. At Blue Line K9, training becomes a straightforward process once they understand the difference between obedience and tricks.
First, we teach dogs the simple trick of sitting. Then start adding distractions and introduce as many distractions as possible to get the dogs to sit no matter the circumstance. Doing the same thing repeatedly becomes muscle memory, and once it's reached that stage, the dog is not just doing the trick but obeying a command.
SETTING PROPER GOALS FOR TRAINING
The second mistake owners make is not setting goals for a dog. Many dog owners don't know exactly what they want their dogs to learn. They often say that they want basic training for their dog. The problem is basic training has different meanings for different people. Some helpful questions to ask yourself are:
• Do you want to keep your pet from running out the door?
• Do you want to be able to share the same bed with your pet comfortably?
• Do you want your pet to go for car rides?
After some goal coaching from our trainers and discussion, owners can identify training goals and create a plan to achieve them.
PET CARE | LOCAL SERVICES 48
BE CONSISTENT WITH REWARDS
This tip is widely overlooked and substantially minimized. Owners should take the time to think about how they plan to reward their dogs during training. Inconsistent reward systems create confusion for pets and disrupt the training process. We recommend that our clients pick a reward and stick with it, whether it's petting, toys, or treats. Taking the time to prepare properly can be overwhelming, so this is one of the impactful ways we serve our clients. By having systems and support built into training, it takes the guesswork out of what to do next. bluelinek-9.com/blue-line-k9-katy-texas

HOUSTON-AREA BASEBALL PLAYER CHASE MORA IS TURNING UP THE HEAT AND PROVING HE IS ONE TO WATCH.
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN HOLUB PHOTOGRAPHY
At just 19 years old, Chase Mora is making waves at Texas State University in San Marcos. Mora made an unforgettable impact in his freshman season, particularly with his prodigious home run hitting.
In his first three at-bats, Mora belted three consecutive home runs, driving in an impressive eight runs. This extraordinary feat earned him the prestigious Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week, a well-deserved recognition. On March 11, he resurfaced with another remarkable display against North Dakota State. During this unforgettable game, he hammered an astonishing four home runs, going 4-for-5 with 9 RBIs and scoring four runs. His outstanding performance once again earned him the title of Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week.
Mora’s dedication and promising performance during his freshman year suggest a bright future in baseball. It is worth
keeping a close eye on the Tomball native as he continues to make his mark in the sport.
We talked with Mora about baseball, injuries, adversity, and what comes next in his skyrocketing baseball career.
THIS WAS A SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR YOU—YOU DON'T GET THE PERFECT GAME FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN AWARD WITHOUT IT BEING SUCCESSFUL—BUT WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS COMING INTO THE YEAR, AND HOW DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MET THEM?
My goal for my freshman year was always to get All-American. I would have loved to be First Team Freshman All-American, but I am proud to have received the Second Team All-American honor. Overall, my freshman year has been a huge success –I did everything I could to put myself in the best possible position by going out every day, working hard, and trying to get one percent better each day.

HOW ABOUT THE PROGRESS YOU HAD AS A PITCHER? ARE THERE ANY PITCHES YOU ARE TRYING TO DEVELOP?
Last June, I had Tommy John surgery and have just now been released from my doctor to start throwing as part of the pitching program. I look forward to returning to the mound in the fall to help support my team in any way needed. I will still play middle infield and remain in the lineup and hope to either be the weekday starter or come in as relief during games to help out on the mound.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE YOU GOT FROM A PLAYER, COACH, OR TEAMMATE THAT GAVE YOU THE RIGHT MINDSET TO BE A GOOD COLLEGE PLAYER?
From an early age, my Dad always taught me to let stuff go and stay in the present moment. That advice helped me going into college, because I knew I would face a lot of adversity. I know there are going to be a lot of bad days.
Sometimes there are more bad days in a week than good ones, so moving on and not focusing on that last at-bat has helped me improve my game. When I arrived on campus in the fall, as a team, we met with Brian Cain, and he also helped us understand the mental part of the game.

BASEBALL IS CHALLENGING IN TERMS OF DEALING WITH FAILURE AND HAVING THE RIGHT MINDSET. AS YOU HAVE MOVED ON IN YOUR CAREER, DO YOU BETTER UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A LOT OF ADVERSITY IN BASEBALL?
That's it in a nutshell – baseball is a game of adversity. Players are going to fail more times than they succeed. During a game we had at Texas A&M in College Station, I had what everyone was referring to as a "Freshman Game." I was 0-5 at the plate with four strikeouts. Grounded into a double play and made three errors – all in this one game. And I had a lot of family members and friends there to finally get to watch me play college baseball.
And as much as that would weigh on most people, the next day, we got on the bus to travel to our next series in Alabama, and the first thing that Coach Trout asked me was, "What happened last night," and I said, "Coach, I don't know."
That wasn't me avoiding the question – I was moving past it and on to the next game. I can't go back and change what happened; I can only change what I do in the next game or practice. In that following series at South Alabama, I hit a home run that broke the home run record for a freshman at Texas State University.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING AND GROWING UP IN TOMBALL. WHAT PUSHED YOU INTO BASEBALL, AND WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR KEY MENTORS?
Growing up in Tomball was fun. My parents and even my grandmothers went to Tomball High School,
“OVERALL, MY FRESHMAN YEAR HAS BEEN A HUGE SUCCESS –I DID EVERaYTHING I COULD TO PUT MYSELF IN THE BEST POSSIBLE POSITION BY GOING OUT EVERY DAY, WORKING HARD, AND TRYING TO GET ONE PERCENT BETTER EACH DAY.” – CHASE MORA
ATHLETE LIFE | SPORTS + RECREATION 54

so I was always surrounded by a lot of family and friends. I started playing baseball when I was four years old and have always loved the game. My parents always tried to ensure I was constantly being challenged because Tomball is very competitive in baseball. I always played on teams with kids older than me, and it wasn't until I was around 13 that I finally played with kids my age.
After bouncing around to several teams, I finally found my home at Hunter Pence Baseball during high school. Hunter Pence Baseball (HP) and my coaches, Aaron Cunningham and Sean Danielson, were where I learned what it would take to play at the next level. Aaron and Sean prepared me to play in college and were instrumental in my recruitment. They put the
team in the best tournaments in the nation and put us in front of college and professional scouts. Without them, I would not have received all the offers and ultimately played on the field as a freshman for the Texas State University baseball team.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS MOVING FORWARD?
I want to step up in the leadership role and lead by example for my team. We lost a lot of key seniors this year. I would also like to be named First Team All-American, First Team Sun Belt Conference, and make it to Omaha with my team for a national championship. I would like to get into the Cape Cod Baseball League next summer and put myself in the best position to be drafted in the 2025 MLB Draft.

BeeWeaver Honey Farm is the Place to Bee
See bees and drink mead at the oldest family-owned Texas bee farm
On a clear spring weekend, take a drive west on Highway 290 until the suburbs disappear, then turn towards Bryan-College Station. When you see the gentle slopes of Grimes County farmlands thick with wildflowers stretched out across the horizon and you’ll know you’re on the right track. Make a few turns down the quiet country roads and you’ll arrive at a little place called Lynn Grove, the ancestral home of the Weaver family, where a beekeeping legacy dating back five generations is still all the buzz.
BeeWeaver Honey Farm is a place to enjoy all things bees. It’s the oldest family-owned bee farm in Texas and one of the largest in the nation, selling more than 10,000 queen bees annually. In recent years, BeeWeaver has grown into a vibrant community attracting both experienced beekeepers and curious families. It’s a destination for anyone yearning to understand more about the life of bees, taste locally-sourced honey, or escape the city and sip a glass of golden mead.
THE WEAVER FAMILY LEGACY
The first Weavers, newlyweds Florence and Zachariah Weaver, likely had little idea their sweet spot for honeybees would reshape the
course of their entire family. The couple was gifted 10 hives of honey bees as a wedding present in 1888, and as the years passed the bees flourished. The hives did so well that Zachariah found himself hauling honey to Houston to sell on the weekends. By the 1920s, the Weavers began commercially producing queen bees and by the 1970s BeeWeaver became the largest producer of queen bees in the country.
In 2007, a phenomenon called Bee Colony Collapse Disorder began to make headlines, where entire colonies were lost because the majority of worker bees disappeared leaving the queen behind. This sparked interest in bees and the importance of bee colony conservation. Soon travelers arrived at BeeWeaver, cameras in hand, eager for one thing: they wanted to see the bees.
“There was this demand out there,” says Laura Weaver. Laura co-owns BeeWeaver along with her husband Dan, Zachariah Weaver’s great-grandson. “We took for granted what we know about bees and our enjoyment watching and learning about them. Other people wanted to do this as well.”
Today, BeeWeaver offers tours, classes, bee handling experiences and events that draw

people from all walks of life. During spring and summer, visitors can watch beekeepers catch a queen or get up close themselves and hold a frame of live bees. And for those less enthusiastic about meeting the insects, BeeWeaver offers a screened observation deck as well as plenty of shopping and honey-tasting opportunities at its Bee Goods Mercantile and on-site country kitchen. More recent additions include a stylish loft located above the farm’s honey-packing facility and a collection of glamping tents built just a few yards from BeeWeaver’s on-site meadery.
DRINK MEAD AND BE MERRY
WildFlyer Mead Company is known as the “buzzed side” of the honey farm. BeeWeaver co-owns the meadery along with husband-wife mead makers Jeff and Chelsea Murray. The couple launched the business in 2019 after years of mead making using honey from their own bees (which they originally purchased from BeeWeaver). Jeff, the mead master who has a background in hydrology and beer brewing, creates each of the meads from scratch using Texas honey, seasonal fruits, water, yeast and fermentation time. The result is an irresistibly boozy honey wine that makes for a relaxing way to end your trip to the bee farm.
“It’s a basic process upfront,” Jeff says. “But the magic, art and science making the mead is in the fermentation.”
WildFlyer meads are dry to semi-sweet tasting with clever names revealing their origin. There’s Game of Thorns, a high-alcohol mead crafted from mesquite blossom honey, and then there’s Peaches Be Crazy, a light and peachy blend, and the Imperius, a darker imperial mead crafted exclusively with BeeWeaver wildflower honey. This summer, Jeff plans to launch a mint julep mead as well as a grapefruit lime blend.
WildFlyer visitors can enjoy mead inside the WildFlyer farmhouse tasting room or sit outside with the dogs and let the kids roam free. WildFlyer and BeeWeaver’s onsite café, FlyBy Sip ‘n Snack, also serves food Thursdays and Fridays, hosts live music on Friday nights and food trucks on the weekends.
From honey bees to honey wine, BeeWeaver Farms is the place to experience the sweeter side of life.
